ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that free agent Cedric Benson is currently in Green Bay and expected to sign with the Packers. Green Bay is no doubt a very pass-happy offense, but adding a veteran presence to the backfield may help in key division games or in tough redzone situations. Benson is ageing rapidly, especially with his off-season problems and visits to the local state penitentiary. Benson is durable and not a bad blocker. His role in Green Bay will likely be a rotation player that helps in key situations.
Staying out of trouble will be an important part of his time in Green Bay. Last year (July 17) Benson was arrested in Austin, Texas for a misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury to a family member. He was sentenced to 20 days in jail and ordered to pay a $4,000 fine. Benson was released from jail on September 3, after only five days of his sentence. He received a one game suspension, enacted in week 8.
Fantasy Factor: Many forget Benson had over 1,000 yards rushing for the Bengals last season. His career rushing average has always been solid and with the Packers backfield looking unspectacular these days, the chance the former-bengal becoming a centerpiece in this offense isn’t out of the question. Fantasy owners should have an open mind when looking at the depth chart of Packers backfield if Benson signs
