Gridiron Experts
Chris Strong

NFL Power Rankings Week 14

The first two teams have booked their tickets to the playoffs and have won their respective divisions with now time being of the essence for the remaining division leaders and wild card contenders to push for those few spots that still exist. It was a fantastic weekend of football. No doubt about it.

America’s game of the week put the Packers perfect season on the line, as they narrowly escaped with a victory, while Tim Tebow and the Broncos managed to pull out another come from behind victory. Oh, and lets not forget Jason Garrett’s questionable coaching decision that cost the Cowboys the game against the Cardinals.

It’s crunch time in the NFL as the playoffs inch closer and closer. December could be the month to remember or one to forget depending on your allegiances because now it’s an epic battle to the end of the season. With that…

Lets glance at the Power Rankings heading into Week 14. Shall we?

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 12-0 Rank Last Week: 1
An unbelievable season was put to the test again this weekend against a Giants squad desperately searching for a win. The Packers were able to win on a last second field goal from the leg of Mason Crosby, keeping a perfect season in tact and officially clinching the NFC North division. Aaron Rodgers thrived under pressure leading a last minute drive to set up the game winning field goal. Nothing changes from the previous week, as Green Bay still remains the team to take down. Next Week: vs. Raiders.

2. Baltimore Ravens Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 2
Inching closer to the AFC North division title, the Ravens put a hurting on an ailing Browns team that had running back Ray Rice run for a career day of 204 rushing yards. Joe Flacco didn’t necessarily throw the ball well, but with 290 yards on the ground and a Lardarius Webb punt return for a touchdown, the Ravens were able to easily take care of business. Baltimore looks ready for the playoffs. Next Week: vs. Colts.

3. New Orleans Saints Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 3
The explosive Saints continue to put on a show, as Drew Brees made passing history, passing for over 4,031 yards on the season, the first NFL quarterback to eclipse the 4,000 yard mark in twelve games. The Saints remain undefeated at home this season and look set for an epic playoff run. If they continue to pour on the points, the Saints could be unstoppable come January. The only question that remains is who is willing to stop them? Next Week: at Titans.

4. New England Patriots Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 4
The Patriots improve to 9-3, winning their fourth straight game, holding off a late rally from the winless Indianapolis Colts. Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to tight end Rob Gronkowski and withstood an onside kick attempt that could have given the Colts a chance to win the game. The Patriots look set to win the AFC East, now vying for home field advantage in the playoffs. With that said, New England will need to win out for the rest of the season. Next Week: at Redskins.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 5
Nipping at the Ravens heels, the Steelers are looking for a prime wild card spot. They once again took care of business against division rival Cincinnati this week. It wasn’t even a contest as Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdowns and the game was pretty much sealed by the half. The AFC North is still up for grabs, with Baltimore holding a slim advantage. Now the Steelers will be hoping the Ravens take a late season dive, thrusting them to the top of the division. Next Week: vs. Browns. (Thursday night)

6. San Francisco 49ers Record: 10-2 Rank Last Week: 6
The second team to record double digit victories this season has also clinched the NFC West division, cementing their spot in the playoffs. The Niners looked sharp against an ailing Rams team, shutting them out 26-0. Now, Mr. Jim Harbaugh, only the third rookie coach in NFL history to win the division, has to plan for the postseason. It should be interesting to see what he comes up with. Next Week: at Cardinals.

7. Houston Texans Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 7
T.J. time in Houston paid off with a big win for the Texans, as they were able to hold off a fighting Atlanta Falcons squad. Given the Texans are riddled with injuries, they are still finding ways to win. With their sixth win in a row, the Texans are looking good to wrap up the AFC South and third string quarterback T.J. Yates is performing quite well considering the circumstances. He threw his first NFL touchdown this weekend, but Houston suffered another big loss in receiver Andre Johnson, injuring his left hamstring. This team could on its way to making their first playoff appearance in franchise history. Next Week: at Bengals.

8. Denver Broncos Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 14
With such a pathetic start, one would have pinned the Broncos to be in last place this season, but a huge resurgence has them in a tie atop the AFC West with the Raiders. Tim Tebow and company did it again this weekend, completing another come from behind victory to make Tebow 6-1 as the Broncos starter. Will this ride throughout the rest of season and possibly the playoffs? Who knows, but doubters are now turning to believers in this magical mystery team and Tim Tebow continues to improve from game to game. Next Week: vs. Bears.

9. Tennessee Titans Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 15
Hallelujah! Chris Johnson is slowly and surely returning to form, rushing for a hundred fifty three yards this week against Buffalo. With this win, the Titans have quietly entered into the wild card race. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for Tennessee who is looking to stride past the Jets, Bengals, and even the Raiders for one of two coveted spots. Matt Hasselbeck has the experience to possibly get this team further than all might have thought this season. We’ll see if the Titans have the fight in them the remainder of the season. Next Week: vs. Saints.

10. New York Jets Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 16
Gang Green was able to slide past the Redskins in a fourth quarter rally to improve to 7-5, giving them a better chance to contend for a wild card spot. Although their game over the weekend was less than stellar considering the Jets only produced a hundred sixty total yards after three quarters. It was Shonn Greene’s big running day that helped the Jets overcome the struggling Skins. Nonetheless, Rex Ryan still believes his team will be in the Super Bowl. We’ll see come February. Next Week: vs. Chiefs.

11. Dallas Cowboys Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 8
With the best intentions at heart, head coach Jason Garrett rightfully cost his team the game this weekend in Arizona. Calling a timeout right before Dallas kicker Dan Bailey kicked it through the up-rights iced him long enough so his second kick wasn’t even close. Arizona forced overtime and came up big as Kevin Kolb dumped a short pass to LaRod Stephens-Howling who zigzagged fifty-two yards for the game winning score. Dallas’ winning streak was cut short, but nonetheless they are still in a good position to win the NFC East. Next Week: vs. Giants.

12. Oakland Raiders Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 9
Oakland had a chance to take over first place in the division but stumbled against the resilient Miami Dolphins. Carson Palmer had a decent day passing, but the Dolphins surged out of the gate and took care of business at home. The Raiders are in a good position to either win the AFC West or grab a remaining wild card slot. However, Oakland needs to keep winning and make sure that Tebow and the Broncos don’t surpass them. Next week: at Packers.

13. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 10
The Bengals just couldn’t overcome a sleuth of turnovers and mishaps that had them eliminated from winning the AFC North this weekend. Still vying and in the running for a wild card spot, the Bengals will have to play much better if they expect to go beyond the regular season and eliminate many of the gaffes they had on Sunday. Sunday’s game was a big eye opener for this squad who now know what kinds of threats that may lie ahead come postseason time. Next Week: vs. Texans.

14. Atlanta Falcons Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 11
A team that was sporadic on offense for most of the day now find themselves fighting for a wild card spot, now down two games to the division leading Saints. Trailing the entire game this weekend, the Falcons were never able to take a firm grasp of the game and comeback against a hurt Texans team. The Falcons are still a heavy favorite to clinch a wild card spot, but will have keep pace with the Bears, Lions and several others if they hope to secure one. Next Week: at Panthers.

15. Chicago Bears Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 12
Things keep getting worse for the Chicago Bears whose mid-season surge has come to a screeching halt. Jay Cutler is out and now the Bears only offensive weapon in Matt Forte is down and out for two to six weeks. The Bears were once thinking playoffs and are still in heat of things, but plagued by injuries could have this once promising team miss the postseason. Next Week: at Broncos.

16. Detroit Lions Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 13
The Lions had the hot hand to start the season, but have gone on a cold streak, losing five of their last seven. Detroit is still hopeful for the playoffs, but will need to shake off their losing streak and find new ways to win. Matthew Stafford had another four hundred yard passing day, but then again, this isn’t the only thing that will contribute to wins. These last four games will test this team in more ways than one. Next Week: vs. Vikings.

17. Arizona Cardinals Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 18
Kevin Kolb returned to the Cardinals this week and helped them inch closer in the playoff hunt with a huge overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals appeared defeated when Dan Bailey made the game winning kick, but Dallas coach Jason Garrett kept their hopes alive by calling timeout at the last second. Kolb hit LaRod Stephens-Howling for a fifty-two yard touchdown to secure the overtime win. The season isn’t over just yet for this team, if they keep winning who knows what might happen. Next Week: vs. 49ers.

18. Seattle Seahawks Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 22
In an effort to save their season, the Seattle Seahawks ran all over the reeling Eagles to give them a fighting chance in the playoff hunt. Marshawn Lynch was great, rushing for a hundred forty eight yards and a couple of first half touchdowns. This was the Seahawks third win in four games and now they hold on for dear life in the playoff hunt. It may be too late for the Seahawks this year, but all aside they ruined the Eagles chances of a hopeful comeback and winning season. Next Week: vs. Rams. (MNF)

19. New York Giants Record: 6-6 Rank Last Week: 17
So close yet so far as the New York Giants gave the Green Bay Packers a run for their money, but were unable to stop the hot hand of Aaron Rodgers in the waning seconds of the game. With their fourth loss in a row, the Giants are now on the edge of missing the playoffs. With a loss by Dallas this weekend, it certainly helped their chances, but now more than ever the Giants will have to break this losing streak if they want to see snow fall in January. Next Week: at Cowboys.

20. San Diego Chargers Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 24
Where in the world did this come from? Monday night’s game for the Chargers saw them as a rejuvenated bunch, outperforming and outscoring the Jaguars by a big margin. If San Diego played like this all season, their record would be much improved. Phillip Rivers was excellent probably playing his best game all year, considering his passing numbers haven’t been so hot this season. With a six game losing streak finally coming to an end, the Chargers now prepare themselves for late season rally. Next Week: vs. Bills.

21. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 27
The art of the Hail Mary paid off this weekend as quarterback Tyler Palko aired one out in the final seconds of the first half. Brain Urlacher deflected the ball into the waiting arms of Dexter McCluster. It was the only touchdown of the game as the Chiefs snap their losing streak. Chicago fans got a brief glimpse of former Bear Kyle Orton wearing Kansas City red, who was injured on his first play and didn’t return to action. There’s still hope for this Chiefs squad. Next Week: at Jets.

22. Miami Dolphins Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 25
The Fins have been on a late season surge winning four of their last five games. It makes you wonder whether or not if the Dolphins had started out this way, how their season would have differed. Matt Moore was pretty good, but it was Reggie Bush who ran for over a hundred yards against the Raiders. This once woeful team is still continuing to impress. The playoffs may be out of reach at this point, but that doesn’t mean the Fins can’t keep swimming strong. Next Week: vs. Eagles.

23. Carolina Panthers Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 28
Cam Newton had a field day this weekend against Tampa Bay, rushing for three touchdowns to set the NFL single season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Carolina has already doubled the amount of wins from a year ago and Cam Newton looks to be the savior of the Panthers franchise. With a few more years under his belt, the Panthers could be elite team once again. Next Week: vs. Falcons.

24. Washington Redskins Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 19
Losing seven out of their last eight, the Washington Redskins have not been the same team since the first two weeks of the season. In last place in the NFC East, their season is all but over and Mike Shanahan is reeling for answers. There was a chance this weekend for a big win, but the Skins led the Jets over-power them in the fourth quarter to let victory slip away. It’s been another disappointing season for Washington. It will be interesting to see what this team does come the off-season. Next Week: vs. Patriots.

25. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 20
This team has seen their season slide into the ground week after week. Now, with the playoffs looming in the distance, the Bills are fighting for their life to stay alive. Five straight losses have sent this team from the top of the AFC East to third. It’s sad to see the wheels coming off this once thought to be dynamic squad. At least this week, Stevie Johnson kept his touchdown celebrations on the classier side. Poor Buffalo, they just can’t seem catch a break. Next Week: at Chargers.

26. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 21
Another loss for the Eagles pits them with the Washington Redskins at the bottom of the NFC East. Vince Young started again for the Eagles with Vick being unable to play and performed lowly. He threw four interceptions, a career high for him, as the Eagles chances of securing a winning season went out the door. It’s hard to say what happened this year in Philly and as the drama mounts, so do the losses and the “boo-birds” from the stands. Next Week: at Dolphins

27. Cleveland Browns Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 23
Losing for the fifth time in six straight games, the Browns are hurting badly and now play on a shortened week on Thursday night football, against the Steelers nonetheless. Their season may be over and maybe it couldn’t have come at a better time considering the Browns are all banged-up. Let the re-building process continue. Next Week: at Steelers. (Thursday night)

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 26
After starting 3-1, the Buccaneers have struggled the rest of the season dropping their last six of seven games and are all but eliminated from playoff contention. Josh Freeman was out this weekend with an injury to his throwing shoulder, thus giving Josh Johnson an opportunity to play, one that didn’t pan out so well. Tampa Bay should be better than their record indicates, but this season hasn’t gone exactly to plan. Maybe next year, eh? Next Week: at Jaguars

29. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-9 Rank Last Week: 29
Not a good outing for a team looking to keep their season under control. With the recent selling of the team and Jack Del Rio finally out the door, the Jags are looking to rebuild their broken franchise. Jacksonville suffered several miscues and a botched snap to put points on the board Monday night. Unfortunately the future regarding this team is still in question. With time will come answers, hopefully, cross your fingers Jags fans. Next Week: vs. Buccaneers.

30. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-10 Rank Last Week: 30
It was another crushing blow to the Vikings this week who fell into the double-digit loss category this season. Christian Ponder and his boys can’t catch a break considering he passed for three hundred eighty one yards, setting a Minnesota single game rookie record once held by the great Fran Tarkenton. It was a late interception thrown by Ponder that set-up the game winning score by the Broncos. The Vikings lose their fourth in a row and will now begin preparing for next season already. Next Week: vs. Lions.

31. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-10 Rank Last Week: 31
No Sam Bradford again for St. Louis as A.J. Feely filled in for the injured starter. Feely struggled all afternoon and the Rams were not even noticeable in a game that didn’t mean that much to them to begin with. The Rams have been reeling the entire season and now look forward to having a high draft pick come April 2012. Next Week: at Seahawks. (MNF)

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-12 Rank Last Week: 32
With four games remaining, the Colts are on the edge of a winless season. Quarterback Dan Orlovsky replaced Curtis Painter this week and gave the Colts a fighting chance against a dominant Patriots squad. A legendary comeback was in the making, but the Colts were too little too late in accomplishing the feat. The Colts must beat Baltimore, Tennessee, Houston or Jacksonville to avoid 0-16. Next Week: at Ravens

Phil Clark

NFC Goal Line Gossip – Week 13

As you continue to focus on matchups, injuries, weather, and the other factors that tend to keep owners awake late at night, also remember that this week’s Thursday night affair involves the Eagles and Seahawks. Therefore, if you own LeSean McCoy, or Marshawn Lynch, make sure that they are safely inserted into your lineups before the early kickoff transpires.

With that, let’s progress to a detailed look at how the backfields are evolving on every NFC team from a fantasy perspective. This column will provide the comprehensive information that you need, to maximize the chances of winning your fantasy matchups in week 13.

Arizona Cardinals: Ken Whisenhunt chose not to duplicate the conservative employment of Beanie Wells that resulted in just eight carries during week 11, and instead allotted him 27 attempts against St. Louis’ 32nd ranked rush defense. The third-year back responded with a display of commendable toughness, by exploding for 228 yards despite his lingering knee injury. Wells established a new franchise record, while exceeding 100 yards for the second time this season. He is now eighth in rushing for the year with 849 yards, and has now scored eight TDs, after his seven-yard run in week 12. Wells will not have the luxury of facing such a hospitable run defense on Sunday, when he lines up against Dallas’ 10th ranked unit.

Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner has now failed to reach 100 yards in three of his last four games, after he amassed only 60 on 19 attempts in week 12. He had averaged 106 YPG in his previous five contests, before his diminished output against Minnesota’s ninth ranked rush defense. Despite the disappointing result, he is still fourth in among all backs with 948 yards for the season. He also continues to possess one of the league’s most extensive workloads, as his 219 attempts are second only to Maurice Jones-Drew. The yardage will not become any easier to obtain on Sunday, when Turner encounters another formidable rush defense. The fourth ranked Texans are only allowing 92.5 YPC.

Carolina Panthers: Even though the ongoing time share between Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams places a cap on their value, both were viable starters for their exceptional matchup with the 31st ranked Indianapolis rush defense, that had allowed 145.6 YPG, and 12 TDs. Both members of the tandem delivered, as Stewart led the Panthers with 70 rushing yards on 10 attempts, which were supplemented with 12 additional yards on three receptions. However, it was Williams who provided the most fantasy points, by producing two TDs, and amassing 69 yards on a season high 15 carries. It was the first time that Williams has found the end zone since week 5, and the two scores bring his season total to three. Tampa Bay’s 30th ranked run defenders (139.7) now provide another promising matchup, allowing owners to use either back as a low end No. 2 or flex.

Chicago Bears: It was anticipated that Matt Forte would become even more of the Bears’ offensive focal point, in their first game without Jay Cutler. Instead, his 18 touches were the fewest since week 3, and he gained just 59 yards with his 12 rushing attempts. After rushing for 686 yards, and 137 YPG in weeks 4-9, Forte has manufactured only 180 (60 YPG) in his last three. And while he is still third overall in rushing yardage for the season with 985 yards, it is also disconcerting for his owners that Marion Barber has recently acquired an expanding role in the offense. Barber surprisingly captured 10 carries, and generated 63 yards. Forte did collect six passes for 25 yards, and is now second among all backs with 490 receiving yards for the year. Despite the legitimate concerns that have suddenly emerged, Forte should deliver better numbers against Kansas City’s 26th ranked rush defense.

Dallas Cowboys: DeMarco Murray has now rushed for 761 yards since his insertion into the starting lineup in week 7, including the 87 that he accumulated against the stingy Miami rush defense. It was his fourth game in excess of 85 yards, as he has run for at least 73 in every start. He has now gained 834 yards for the season, which places him ninth among all backs. Plus, his 5.7 YPC remains exceptional. He also collected four receptions for 41 yards, which extended his streak of consecutive games with 100+ total yards to four. Felix Jones did not register a carry, and is not a threat to impede Murray’s production anytime soon. Expect more excellent numbers against the Cardinals’ 20th ranked rush defense (123.5 YPG).

Detroit Lions: Kevin Smith exploded into fantasy relevance, with his 201 total yard, three TD performance in week 11, and was on his way to proving that the impressive performance was not a complete fluke. But after amassing 57 yards with his initial 10 touches against the Packers, a high ankle sprained jettisoned him to the sidelines. Maurice Morris then proceeded to torch Green Bay for 120 total yards on 16 touches. While his 39 rushing yards were consistent with his 40 YPG average over the past six contests, his 81 receiving yards were easily a season high, and nearly matched his total for the year entering the game (89). If Morris was dropped in your leagues, after he began serving as Smith’s backup, he should be added immediately. Monitor Smith’s status, as whichever member of the tandem starts against New Orleans, can be used as a No. 3 in your lineups.

Green Bay Packers: James Starks started for Green Bay despite knee and ankle issues, but did not secure his usual workload, nor could he deliver his usual moderate numbers. He aggravated the ankle injury, and was sidelined for most of the second half. His four carries were the fewest this season, and his 19 yards were the lowest since week three. Ryan Grant led the Packers with just 20 yards on six carries. He also supplemented his production with 20 receiving yards on three receptions. However, he continues to provide no incentive for fantasy owners to add him. Starks would only be a low end No. 3, if he is healthy enough to perform against the Giants.

Minnesota Vikings: Toby Gerhart struggled mightily in week 11, gaining just 18 yards on seven carries against the league’s 25th ranked rush defense. Therefore, not much was expected when he faced an Atlanta unit that entered their matchup as the NFL’s second best run defenders. It was then hardly a surprise that Gerhart labored, managing 44 yards on 17 attempts (2.6 YPC), while garnering two passes for an additional 19 yards. Fantasy owners should monitor the status of Adrian Peterson, heading into Sunday’s matchup with Denver’s improving run defense. If All Day is unable to perform, Gerhart should be avoided completely.

New Orleans Saints: Mark Ingram led the Saints with 80 yards on 13 attempts, which was just the second time that he has exceeded 55 all season. That included a 35-yard burst, for his fourth TD of the year. It was just the fifth time that he garnered at least 13 carries, and the first time since week 7. However, six of his attempts occurred after the Saints had scored 42 points, serving as a reminder that game flow will determine his role. Pierre Thomas amassed 64 yards on eight attempts, which was just the second time that he has exceeded 60 yards this season. He also collected 47 more on three receptions, and scored his third TD in the past four games. Darren Sproles ran for 54 yards on eight carries, and caught two passes for 28 yards. He leads all backs with 62 receptions, and is third with 476 yards. He can be used as a No. 2, with Thomas and Ingram as No. 3s against Detroit.

New York Giants: Brandon Jacobs has now started four games while Ahmad Bradshaw performed the role of spectator, and has run for 194 yards. That includes the 46 that he accumulated against the Saints in week 12.

With the 13 carries that he was allotted, Jacobs has averaged 15 APG during his stretch as the feature back. His eight yard score in New Orleans was his fourth rushing TD of the season, and his fifth overall. Bradshaw’s status should be monitored closely heading into Sunday’s encounter with Green Bay. He would resume his previous slot as a No. 2 in your lineups should he return. If he remains sidelined, Jacobs can be used as a No. 3 against the Packers’ 13th ranked rush defense.

Philadelphia Eagles: The injury depleted Philadelphia offense did not rely quite as heavily upon LeSean McCoy as was expected, and he did not deliver the excellent numbers that fantasy owners have become accustomed to. . He produced only 61 total yards on 14 touches, including 31 yards on 10 carries. It was his lowest rushing total since week 4, and just the second time that he has failed to run for at least 70 yards this year. Still, that did improve his season total to 1,050, which makes him the NFL’s rushing leader. Plus, he scored his 11th rushing TD, which is also tied for the league lead. He of course remains a must start, but will be challenged with facing Seattle’s 11th ranked rush defense on a very short week.

San Francisco 49ers: The Ravens’ fifth ranked run defense had been permitting 83.2 YPG, but they limited Frank Gore to less than half of that amount in week 12. His 39 yards represented the lowest output this season, other than his injury shortened appearance in week 10. That is a sizable change from the 127 YPG that he averaged from weeks 4-9. He has also gone four consecutive games without scoring. Still, Gore has now accumulated 909 rushing yards for the year, which is sixth best among all backs. Fantasy owners can expect significantly better results, when he lines up against the Rams, who are allowing a league worst 159 YPG.

Seattle Seahawks: Marshawn Lynch has now exceeded 100 yards in three of the past four games, after assembling 111 in week 12. He has rebounded considerably from an underwhelming initial four weeks of the season, by generating 443 yards in his last four games. That has improved his season yardage total to 706, which is 17th among all backs. He has also scored in seven consecutive games, after collecting a 20-yard TD catch versus Washington. Plus, the 24 carries that he garnered against the Redskins, increased his season total 180 in 11 games, providing fantasy owners with continued confidence that he will be allotted a heavy workload for the remainder of the year. He can be employed as a No. 2 against Philadelphia’s 15th ranked rush defense.

St. Louis Rams: Steven Jackson was supplied with an appealing week 12 matchup, when he lined up against Arizona. Not only had he gashed the Cardinals for 130 yards in week 9, but their unit had also been depleted by injury since that encounter. However, Jackson then proceeded to rush for a disappointing 64 yards on 17 attempts, as shortcomings within the Rams’ 26th ranked passing attack enabled Arizona to focus more extensively on stopping the run. After generating 583 yards in weeks 6-10, Jackson has only averaged 53 YPG in the past two weeks. And, he has failed to score in four consecutive games. He must now deal with San Francisco’s top ranked rush defense, and will only deliver modest numbers at best.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LeGarrette Blount’s reawakening continued in week 12, as he ripped Tennessee for 103 yards on 20 attempts. While it was just his third 100 yard rushing performance of the year, it was also his second straight. Plus, he collected 56 yards on three receptions, including a 35 yard scamper that incorporated another memorable hurdle for the archives. He has now accumulated 644 yards in nine games, which places him 21st among all backs. Fantasy owners can employ him as a solid No. 2 on Sunday, when he should deliver excellent numbers against Carolina’s 28th ranked rush defense (137.5 YPG, 15 TDs).

Washington Redskins: It seems almost inhumane for any fantasy owners to subject themselves to the extreme risk that is involved with starting any Redskin RBs. But here comes your latest enticement, in the form of Roy Helu’s 162 total yards on 30 touches against Seattle. It was a season high for the rookie, who also generated his best day as a runner with 108 yards on 23 carries. Plus, he scored his first TD on a 29-yard burst. Logically, Helu should now capture a similar workload for the remainder of the year, and produce sizable fantasy points for his owners. If you are willing to gamble that Mike Shanahan will avoid doing the inexplicable, like suddenly thrusting Ryan Torain into the lineup without any rational basis for doing so, then Helu can be used as a No. 2 against the Jets.

Gridiron Experts
Chris Strong

NFL Power Rankings Week 13

Thanksgiving weekend provided some of the most twisted and entertaining match-ups we have seen all year. “Turkey Day” was a wild one starting with a divisional rivalry that ended in a “flag fest” and a possible Ndamukong Suh suspension on the way, a come from behind victory in the Lone Star state, and a brotherly battle in Baltimore. It was a weekend where fans have started to question the ethics and power that referees have on the field. So many missed, questionable, and unnecessary calls were made and now the fans are heated and frustrated with the zebras that rule the football jungle.

The “Tebow Train” rolled to victory again, as the Broncos defeated the Chargers in overtime, while the Raiders held off the “Cutler-less” Bears, and the AFC East battle between the Jets and Bills ended in high fashion where karma got the best of Stevie Johnson and his teammates. Don’t think that trying to be clever will help you win games because it will come back later to haunt you later and cost your team more than you could imagine. The stupidity of players in the NFL has reached new heights.

It was a great weekend of football nonetheless, as we approach the end of the season and the highly anticipated berth of the playoffs. Now, more than ever will be the time to push harder to get into the coveted ranks of the AFC and NFC elites. Let the games begin while…

We look ahead at the Power Rankings heading into Week 13.

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 11-0 Rank Last Week: 1
The Green Bay Packers have won seventeen straight games dating back to last year, downing division rival Detroit this weekend on Thanksgiving. In a wacky contest, the Packers started slow, but got out to a big lead and held it for most of the game. Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdowns and won Fox’s Galloping Gobbler award. The Packers surpassed one of their biggest tests so far this season, but another lies ahead against the Giants next week. Nothing changes from last week’s power rankings.

2. Baltimore Ravens Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 8
John Harbaugh outmatches his brother Jim as the Ravens sack Alex Smith nine times to beat the 49ers, even without middle linebacker Ray Lewis. Baltimore lay a beating on Smith and the Niners as the Ravens managed to chew up much of the clock late in the game. Joe Flacco threw the only touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory and end San Fran’s eight game winning streak. The Ravens lead the AFC North with the advantage over division rival Pittsburgh.

3. New Orleans Saints Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 5
The Saints steamroll the Giants at the Superdome and now have sole possession of first place in the NFC South. Drew Brees was on fire, throwing for over three hundred yards and four touchdowns. The Saints never let down as they keep proving they are one of the best teams in the NFC. Coming as a surprise to no one, the Saints look poised for the playoffs again and are rolling on all cylinders. Beware the Saints are marching in!

4. New England Patriots Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 6
Despite a slow start and falling behind 10-0, Tom Brady rallied the New England Patriots to put a beating on the Philadelphia Eagles. Brady was on fire, throwing for three hundred sixty one yards and three scores, making the Philly D look extremely sloppy. The Patriots looked like their old dominant selves and have uncovered many inconsistencies in the Eagles game play. It’s going to be tough for the Jets and the Bills to chase the predicted AFC East champs.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 3
In a game where the Steelers should have dominated, Pittsburgh was just able to hold on to a slim victory, extending the Chiefs touchdown drought even further. Ben Roethlisberger played with a broken thumb, while the defense lost Troy Polamalu to an injury in the first quarter. It was a defensive battle from start to finish and the Steelers prevailed in the end as they intercepted Kansas City QB Tyler Palko in the waning seconds. The Steelers are tied with the Ravens atop the AFC North and are looking poised for another playoff run. Unfortunately they’ll have to play more consistent if they hope to get back to the Super Bowl this year.

6. San Francisco 49ers Record: 9-2 Rank Last Week: 2
Recording double-digit wins would have been something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving, but unfortunately the 49ers just couldn’t pull out a win against a dominant Ravens team that sacked Alex Smith nine times. The Niners are still a top tier team in the NFC and will most likely still win the West, but now San Francisco has gotten a taste of defeat and will better prepare themselves for when they face similar teams in the playoffs. It’s too bad an eight game winning streak had to come to an end, but this loss may just benefit them in the end.

7. Houston Texans Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 4
Despite the win, the Houston Texans have fallen three spots simply because they are in bad shape. At 8-3, Houston has a great chance to go to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Unfortunately, with Matt Schaub out for the season and with Matt Leinart injuring his shoulder over the weekend, the Texans QB dilemma is all but over. The Texans will now have to rely on the arms of T.J Yates and the newly signed Kellen Clemens. It will be devastating if Houston doesn’t make the postseason, and even more so to watch such a promising season go down in flames. Here’s to hoping Houston can hang on and make a late season surge with a couple of unlikely players.

8. Dallas Cowboys Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 10
Dallas keeps their winning streak alive with a win over the surging Dolphins on Thanksgiving. With their fourth win in a row, the Cowboys are making their case for the best in the NFC East. Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes to Laurent Robinson and kicker Dan Bailey was able to knock one through the up-rights in the final seconds to secure a 20-19 win. The Cowboys are gunning for the postseason in style and showing their versatility, not to mention the Dallas cheerleaders are doing the same thing, proving they can withstand the big hits of Big D’s Jason Witten.

9. Oakland Raiders Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 11
Despite the many struggles to punch the ball into the endzone, the Raiders were able to hold on to win against the Chicago Bears. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski kicked a team record six field goals in the game, holding off the Bears just long enough to win. Michael Bush rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Carson Palmer threw for over three hundred yards. The defense was able to prevent Chicago from coming back in the final minute. The Raiders lead the AFC West and look prime to win the division, but they’ll have to beware of the Broncos nipping at their heels.

10. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 13
The Bengals faced a scare from division rival Cleveland to get a much-needed win and keep pace with the Ravens and Steelers in the AFC North. Another come from behind victory helped Cincinnati overcome a resilient Browns squad who put up a big fight. Andy Dalton once again led the comeback and kicker Mike Nugent was able to give the Bengals their first lead with thirty-eight seconds left. The Bengals got lucky off another botched Browns snap that helped the Bengals secure the win. The Bengals have had a very strong season and are looking to squeak into a wild card spot.

11. Atlanta Falcons Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 14
The Falcons have been increasingly getting better as the season has progressed. Matt Ryan tossed three TD passes and Atlanta was able to hold off a last minute assault from the Minnesota Vikings. The former NFC South champs are looking to get back to where they were last year, aiming for a wild card spot, chasing the New Orleans Saints in the process. Another impressive victory proved Atlanta is coming out strong and fighting like a team that’s looking for vengeance.

12. Chicago Bears Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 7
The “Cutler-less” Bears struggled with backup QB Caleb Hanie leading the charge against the Raiders. The Bears were headed for such a promising season, with five straight wins and many of the offensive problems that plagued Chicago fixed, they looked like one of the NFC’s elites. But, with Hanie throwing three interceptions, one coming at a crucial moment, Chicago wasn’t able to win on the road. With Cutler out, Chicago is hoping their luck will turn around just long enough for them to make the playoffs. Chicago is missing Cutler more than they have probably realized.

13. Detroit Lions Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 9
In what was supposed to be their coming out party, the Lions got out to an early deficit and couldn’t comeback against the dominant Green Bay Packers. Penalties and ejections were affluent in the contest and the Lions frustration was overbearing as they suffer another loss and remain tied in second in the division with the Chicago Bears. Jim Schwartz needs to help keep players emotions in check and learn from the bad performance on Thanksgiving. With five games remaining, Detroit is in the heat for a wild card spot.

14. Denver Broncos Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 15
There are the believers and there are the doubters, but one can’t say they aren’t impressed with the Broncos turnaround this season, especially with Tim Tebow leading the way. Just barely avoiding the first NFL tie since 2008, the Broncos were able to kick the late game winner in overtime to give them a chance to make it to the playoffs. Tebow is now 5-1 as the starter and Denver is icing the competition. They keep this up and it will be quite the remarkable season for a team that started out so rocky.

15. Tennessee Titans Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 16
Chris Johnson finally strutted his stuff rushing for one hundred ninety yards giving Tennessee the edge over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They were able to overcome four turnovers while they forced five of their own as the Titans are streaking towards the wild card slots in the AFC playoff hunt. They’re in the middle of heat and need to keep winning to give them a greater chance of making it to the postseason.

16. New York Jets Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 17
An energetic and exciting, not to mention a must win for Gang Green this weekend against Buffalo was fun to watch. Mark Sanchez threw four touchdown passes to rally his team past an overconfident Buffalo Bills squad. The Jets needed a win to keep pace in the playoff hunt and did just that. An ill-conceived touchdown dance by Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson came back to haunt him later when Sanchez tossed a TD to Plaxico Burress. In a must win situation, Rex Ryan’s Jets prevailed and overcame a comeback attempt to give them a fighting chance in the AFC playoff race.

17. New York Giants Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 12
It was massacre as Eli and the Giants fell victim to Who Dat Nation. Even with four hundred and six passing yards for Eli Manning, the Saints marched all over the Giants defense and the New York offense did its best to keep pace, but couldn’t match the high potent game-play the Saints came in with. The Giants fall to 6-5 and now fall in the hunt for a playoff spot. They play the Packers next and will need to be prepared in order to stay relevant. It’s all about winning games now.

18. Arizona Cardinals Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 26
Patrick Peterson is Mr. Miracle rookie once again running back a punt return against the Rams, a feat he accomplished back in week nine. The Cardinals just edged the Rams in St. Louis and are attempting to gun for the playoffs at 4-7. John Skelton was a little off this week, but Beanie Wells shined running for two hundred twenty eight yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals will need to gear up for the final five games to try and put themselves in a good position for the postseason.

19. Washington Redskins Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 29
Phew! The Skins snapped a six game losing streak as Rex Grossman led Washington to a fourth quarter win against the Seahawks. With such a promising start and then a long slump, the Skins seem to be back to form for the time being. It hasn’t been the most impressive season and really one of the more forgettable ones, but now the Redskins have a chance to make a last minute run to the postseason and try to be the team that started out so promising.

20. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-6 Rank Last Week: 18
Stevie Johnson should be imprisoned for his tasteless impersonation of Plaxico Burress after scoring a touchdown in a losing effort against the Jets. The Bills have lost their fourth straight game and are letting a great season go to waste. At 5-6, the Bills may have little hope left to make it to the postseason. The Bills have been a one hit wonder to begin the season and haven’t found their groove since. Maybe they’ll make the playoffs…maybe not.

21. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 19
Andy Reid had one of the worst nights of his life as he had to endure the angry Eagles fans chants at Lincoln Financial Field of “Fire Andy” in the second half while Philly was getting demolished by New England. Vince Young made his second straight start, throwing an impressive four hundred yards, but the Eagles sloppy defense helped rally the Pats to a huge win. The Eagles are all but eliminated from the playoffs and have fallen to 1-5 at home this year. Maybe some thought will be given to the Eagles before they begin the 2012 season?

22. Seattle Seahawks Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 20
Just letting the game slip away this weekend, the Seahawks weren’t able to hold off a fourth quarter rally from Washington. The Seahawks were simply stunned by the Redskins and found themselves flat-footed when victory was close. Marshawn Lycnh rushed for one hundred and eleven yards and caught a twenty-yard touchdown pass in the game, but Seattle wasn’t able to stop the Redskins offense. At 4-7, the playoffs aren’t out of reach just yet.

23. Cleveland Browns Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 22
For the second time in three contests, the Browns suffer a botched snap on a field goal try that would have helped Cleveland win. Instead, they allowed their division rival to comeback and steal a victory that was rightfully theirs. Pat Shurmur has done a pretty good job of leading the Browns this year and their season isn’t over just yet. Even with being last in the division, the Browns still have a slim chance at making the postseason. Don’t hold your breath Browns fans, but be proud that Cleveland is going in the right direction, up.

24. San Diego Chargers Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 23
Six straight losses and the Chargers season has snowballed out of control. Now standing at 4-7, San Diego is on the verge of missing the postseason and having such a promising start go up in flames. This weekend, the Chargers had numerous opportunities to end the stunning winning streak of Denver, but failed to stop them when it mattered most. Nick Novak had a chance to win it in overtime, but missed a fifty-three yard attempt, giving the “Tebow Train” a prime opportunity to win, which they took full advantage of. San Diego has a lot to think about considering their mid-season slump.

25. Miami Dolphins Record: 3-8 Rank Last Week: 21
The winning streak ends at three, as Miami wasn’t able to hold on to victory against the Dallas Cowboys on “Turkey Day.” The Fins hadn’t allowed a touchdown for thirteen quarters until Tony Romo found Laurent Robinson in the endzone at the end of the first half. Matt Moore led Miami to scores on four straight possessions, but couldn’t score on the final drive, giving Dallas an opportunity to win with a last second field goal. The mid-season surge may be over for the Dolphins, but look how far they have come since starting 0-7.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 24
Five straight losses have sent the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to 4-7 and a slim chance of making the playoffs. Last year, Tampa Bay was 10-6 just narrowly missing the playoffs. This year has turned into a disaster as the Bucs have struggled to become the team they were a year ago. Dropping a game to the mediocre Titans heaved them in the wrong direction and now with only five games remaining, time seems to be running out again for Tampa Bay.

27. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 25
Close, but no comeback on Sunday night as the Chiefs lose another game to fall further in the AFC polls. The playoffs are but a distant dream away as last year’s division winner has struggled to score points in the last few weeks, especially touchdowns. In the final minute Kansas City had a big opportunity to achieve the upset, but an over thrown ball and what looked like the wrong route run by wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had their hopes of a comeback fall apart as the pass was intercepted. The playoffs are a long shot, especially with KC’s upcoming schedule, but why not try for them since stranger things have happened in the NFL.

28. Carolina Panthers Record: 3-8 Rank Last Week: 30
A solid win for Carolina as they easily beat the winless Indianapolis Colts. Cam Newton threw for over two hundred yards and Steve Smith had three receptions for sixty-eight yards in a rare road win for the Panthers. The good news for the Panthers is that Cam Newton may receive the rookie of the year award, the bad news is the Panthers probably won’t make the playoffs. For now, Cam Newton has seemingly revived this franchise.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-8 Rank Last Week: 27
Blaine Gabbert hit the bench in the fourth quarter in an important contest against the Texans. Luke McCown took the reins, giving the Jags a late field goal, but still was unsuccessful in completing the comeback against Houston. The Jaguars need to begin accessing their 2012 season right away and decide if Gabbert is the man they want leading the team and more importantly, the debate over Jack Del Rio’s job security should be something to ponder sooner rather than later.

30. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-9 Rank Last Week: 28
An “Adrian Peterson-less” Vikings squad had more than they could handle against a tough Atlanta team. Percy Harvin made history with the longest kick return that didn’t allot points and the Vikings were too little too late in a comeback attempt that could have really hindered the Falcons. Down 17-0 at the half, Minnesota made a promising comeback attempt coming within three points, but just couldn’t hold off Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense. The Vikings seem to have a strong team, but their heart doesn’t seem to be in it. The Vikings are already looking forward to next year.

31. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-9 Rank Last Week: 31
They try so hard and yet can’t come away with a victory. The Rams fall just shy of beating the Arizona Cardinals, managing to tie the game with just under eight minutes, but gave up a field goal with just over four to go. The Rams couldn’t manage against a ferocious Arizona D and lose their seventh straight to the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Rams take on division rival and leader San Francisco next week. Like the Vikings, next year can’t come soon enough.

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-11 Rank Last Week: 32
A prime opportunity to come away with a win was derailed as Cam Newton and Panthers sent the Colts to 0-11 for the first time since 1986. Any hope of a comeback was lost when Colts QB Curtis Painter threw two late interceptions sealing a Panther victory. Only five games remain to prove that Indy can get at least one win. Cross your fingers Colts fans.

Phil Clark

NFC Goal Line Gossip – Week 12

That’s it. No more bye weeks. Now you can just focus on matchups, injuries, weather, and the other factors that tend to keep owners awake late at night.

Remember to activate any of your backs who will be participating in the Thanksgiving trilogy. If you plan to start Ray Rice, Frank Gore, DeMarco Murray, Reggie Bush, Daniel Thomas, James Starks, Kevin Smith, or Maurice Morris; safely insert them into your lineups before their Thursday kickoffs transpire.

With that, let’s progress to a detailed look at how the backfields are evolving on every NFC team from a fantasy perspective. This column will provide the comprehensive information that you need, to maximize the chances of winning your fantasy matchups in week 12.

Arizona Cardinals: Not only was Beanie Wells challenged with playing through a painful knee, but he was forced to navigate his way through the NFL’s most formidable run defense. Yet, he still manufactured 33 yards, despite being allotted only eight carries. The restricted workload against the 49ers was likely a result of concerns regarding his knee, combined with the fact that Arizona trailed by a significant margin in the second half. Despite the limited production, Wells remains 15th in rushing for the season with 621 yards. Having survived his matchup with the NFL’s best run defenders, he will now face the league’s worst. Fantasy owners should expect better results against a St. Louis unit that allows 148.1 YPG.

Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner has now generated five 100-yard rushing performances this season, after running for exactly 100 on 21 attempts against the Titans’ 22nd ranked rush defense. He is now the NFL’s fifth leading rusher with 888 yards for the season, and has scored eight TDs, including Sunday’s four-yard run. Turner has now been allotted an even 200 attempts, which is the league’s second highest amount. Despite a difficult matchup against Minnesota’s stout run defense, he will remain the focal point of Atlanta’s attack, and is of course a solid No. 1 for your lineups.

Carolina Panthers: The ball was distributed fairly evenly between Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams in week 11, with Stewart garnering 14 touches, and Williams capturing 11. Williams was the leading ground gainer, with 73 yards on 10 carries, an also collected a 32-yard catch. Stewart gained just 22 yards with his eight attempts, but salvaged the day for fantasy owners by amassing 87 yards on six receptions. It was the second time that he has surpassed 100 total yards this season, and he now has 329 receiving yards, which places him eighth among all backs. While the shared workload has been a source of extreme frustration, both backs should benefit from an incredible matchup against the Colts’ horrific rush defense (145.6 YPG).

Chicago Bears: Matt Forte appeared to have an excellent matchup against a reeling Chargers’ rush defense that had just surrendered 191 rushing yards to the Raiders in week 11.Instead, Forte was limited to just 59 yards on 21 attempts (2.8 YPC), which was his lowest total since week 3.It was his second straight game with less than 65 yards, after he had averaged 137 YPG in his previous five. However, he still ranks fourth in rushing for the season with 926 yards. Plus, he is now third in receptions among RBs with 46, and is second with 465 receiving yards. Forte’s will continue to deliver excellent numbers, and his rushing yardage total should be significantly higher, against Oakland’s shaky rush defense.

Dallas Cowboys: There are many reasons to be impressed with DeMarco Murray. He has now accumulated 674 rushing yards in his last five games, after gaining 73 against Washington. He is averaging an exceptional 135 YPG during that stretch, which has propelled him into ninth in yardage for the year with 745. He is also averaging an exceptional 6.0 YPC. And, by garnering 32 yards on six receptions, has now surpassed 100 total yards in four of the last five games. Plus, the return of Felix Jones (five carries, 18 yards) did nothing to stall Murray’s momentum. The only element that could temper fantasy owners’ enthusiasm, is Thursday’s matchup with a stingy Miami rush defense. But start him as a high end No. 2 nonetheless.

Detroit Lions: Did you follow that advice about starting Kevin Smith in week 12? Of course not. Nobody, anywhere was suggesting that about the fourth year back who only produced 256 total yards during the entire 2010 season, and just 29 during his 2011 debut in week 10. But he exploded back into prominence with an amazing 201 total yards and three TDs, with 140 of the yards and two of the scores coming against the woeful Panther rush defense. He becomes an immediate must add before Thursday’s matchup with Green Bay. Just do not expect the same results. Meanwhile, Maurice Morris has been relegated to reserve status, after managing just 29 yards on seven carries.

Green Bay Packers: If ever there was a time for James Starks to produce his first 100-yard rushing performance this season, or score his first TD since week 1, his matchup with Tampa Bay’s 29th ranked rush defense was it. The Bucs had permitted 557 yards in their previous three games (185.6 YPG), and had allowed a whopping 11 TDs. Instead, fantasy owners were rewarded with just 38 yards on 11 attempts, which was actually his worst output since week 3. He did collect six passes for 53 additional yards, but sprained both his knee, and ankle, and was forced to depart. That, along with the fact B.J. Raji now has as many rushing TDs for the season as Starks, provide good rationale to look at other RB options for your lineups. This despite an appealing matchup against a Detroit rush defense that allows 134.7 YPG.

Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson was finding success against Oakland’s 25th ranked rush defense, having bolted for 26 yards and a TD on his initial six carries. But he then sprained his ankle, and did not return. Toby Gerhart then ascended into the No. 1 slot, but could only manufacture 18 yards on seven carries. Before departing, Peterson did increase his season total to 875 yards, which is the NFL’s sixth best. He also scored his league leading 11th rushing TDs. Fantasy owners should monitor his status heading into Sunday’s matchup with Atlanta. If Peterson is unable to perform, there is too much risk with employing the underwhelming Gerhart, against the Falcons’ outstanding rush defense.

New Orleans Saints: In his first 10 games as a Saint, Darren Sproles has established a new career best in rushing yards for a season (348), set a new mark for receptions (60), and needs 73 yards to surpass his current career high in receiving yards (520). The unexpectedly low six touches that he received in week 10 are an aberration, and he should resume his previous allotment of nearly 12 against the Giants on Monday night. While he is dynamic enough to overcome the Saints’ three way time share, that system sizably diminishes the value of Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram, and they should only be used as No. 3s.

New York Giants: Brandon Jacobs captured his third consecutive start on Sunday night, but hardly excelled. He could not accumulate much yardage against Philadelphia, managing only 32 total yards on 15 touches. That included 21 rushing yards on 12 carries, against a unit that had been allowing 120 YPG. Jacobs has now accumulated only 148 yards during Ahmad Bradshaw’s hiatus (foot), and has not demonstrated that he should be employed as anything beyond a backup, once Bradshaw returns. His status should be monitored leading up to Monday night, as whichever back the Giants start against the Saints, can be employed in your lineup as a No. 2.

Philadelphia Eagles: LeSean McCoy was already relied upon heavily in Philadelphia’s offensive strategy, and the insertion of Vince Young did nothing to alter that. McCoy carried 23 times for 113 yards, which was the fifth time that he has exceeded 100 yards this year. However, that is deceptive, as 60 occurred on one burst late in the fourth quarter. Otherwise, his numbers would not have been nearly so appealing. Still, he became the first runner to generate 1,000 rushing yards this season, and is the NFL leader with 1,019. He is also eighth in receptions among all backs with 34. Regardless of whom the Eagles employ at QB, McCoy will deliver another productive outing against New England.

San Francisco 49ers: Frank Gore’s knee injury did not prohibit him from starting against Arizona, nor from amassing 88 yards on 24 attempts. He could have surpassed 100 yards for the sixth time in seven outings, but was pulled from the contest since the 49ers held a commanding lead. He is now seventh in rushing with 870 yards for the season, and his 189 attempts are the third highest. Kendall Hunter accumulated just 27 yards with his 11 carries, after speculation that he might garner an expanded workload. The additional quarter of rest will help Gore for Thursday’s short turnaround, when he will be a must start against the Ravens’ formidable rush defense.

Seattle Seahawks: Marshawn Lynch had rebounded from an extremely inconsistent start to his season, by averaging 122 YPG and scoring twice in weeks 9-10. But he could not deliver a third consecutive 100-yard rushing performance, despite an outstanding matchup against the Rams’ 32nd ranked rush defense. Still, Lynch gained 88 yards on 27 attempts, and did it behind a depleted offensive line. He also continued his scoring streak, by generating a TD for the sixth straight game. His powerful style should continue to serve fantasy owners well, which includes Sunday’s encounter with Washington. Keep him active as a high end No. 2.

St. Louis Rams: After exploding for 417 yards in his last three games, and 583 yards in his last five, Steven Jackson delivered his lowest output since week 4, managing just 42 yards on 15 attempts against Seattle’s stout rush defense. Despite the brief setback for fantasy owners, he is still eighth in rushing, with 749 yards for the season. And although his allotment dropped considerably from the 27 APG that he averaged from weeks 8-10, his workload should quickly resume its previous level. Jackson will rebound considerably on Sunday, against the same Cardinal rush defense that he torched for 130 yards in week 9.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LeGarrette Blount’s value had been degenerating in perfect lockstep with the fortunes of his team. Not only had he failed to generate a 100+ yard rushing performance since week 4, but that was also the last time in which he had scored. But his 54-yard TD jaunt against the Packers possibly altered the momentum of his season, as he broke multiple tackles in one of the most impressive bursts that you will witness this year. It was his fourth TD of the year, and helped propel him to 107 yards on the day with 18 his carries. His numbers would not have been nearly as palatable without the memorable run. But, fantasy owners can employ him as No. 2 on Sunday, in hopes that he can continue his positive momentum against Tennessee.

Washington Redskins: Ryan Torain was given the start against Dallas, but ran just five times for four yards. Other than his 135-yard performance in week 4, he has averaged a horrific 9.5 YPG, and should not exist on anyone’s rosters at this point. Roy Helu actually led the Redskins in yardage (35) and carries (eight). However, he was not a major factor as a receiver, collecting just two passes for three yards. Tashard Choice also received six carries, but only manufactured seven yards. At this point, there is not an analyst out there who can predict what Mike Shanahan will do with his RBs, and certainly no special insight that anyone could possibly possess toward cracking that code. Start any Washington backs completely at your own risk.

Chris Strong

Power Rankings Week 12

Week 11 is in the books and an enthralling weekend it was. With only six games remaining in the season, the push for the playoffs has officially begun and many teams are pushing for their spot (Broncos, Bears, Falcons) while some teams are simply letting their season slip away from them (Bills, Chiefs, Chargers). It was another stellar weekend of football and it all began with a wild one on Thursday night.

Tim Tebow once again shouldered a big comeback win, Baltimore got back to their roots in beating rival Cincinnati, the Packers remained undefeated by the skin of their teeth, and the 49ers win their eighth straight. Football season is still holding the magic and I bet there will be more razzle-dazzle to come. The playoffs cannot come soon enough.

Unfortunately for a few teams, injuries may have plagued them for the rest of the season, such as Chicago’s Jay Cutler, suffering a broken thumb, Matt Schaub sidelined for the Texans, and Buffalo’s Fred Jackson, hurting his leg. Time will only tell how these teams handle their current predicaments and who will make or miss the playoffs.

So, without further protest, lets look ahead at the Power Rankings heading into Week 12.

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 10-0 Rank Last Week: 1
Perfection stood on the line this weekend as the Green Bay Packers survived a scare from the Buccaneers. Aaron Rodgers’ late touchdown pass helped lift the perfect Pack over a resilient Tampa Bay team that came close to taking down the NFL’s best. Yet, the Packers stood tall, as Rodgers and wide receiver Jordy Nelson were the biggest playmakers of the day. The Packers look to stay perfect against the Lions on Thanksgiving.

2. San Francisco 49ers Record: 9-1 Rank Last Week: 2
Who would have thought the Niners would win eight straight games to stand as one of the best teams in the league this year. Another great performance from Alex Smith as he threw for 267 yards and two touchdowns against the Cardinals this weekend as San Fran chases Green Bay for the NFC’s best. With a win over Baltimore on Thanksgiving and a loss in the consecutive week by Seattle against Washington, San Fran will clinch the west and etch their name into the playoff books.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 3
On the bye week, the Steelers will play Kansas City next week. It’s gut-check time for Pittsburgh as they battle Baltimore and the feisty Bengals for the top of the AFC North. Hopefully with this extra week off, Pittsburgh will come back stronger than ever and really give teams a run for their money. Let the battle for the playoffs begin.

4. Houston Texans Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 4
The Texans were on their bye week and now come back looking like a different squad altogether. Matt Schaub is out for the year with backup quarterback Matt Leinart taking the reins. Some would think this would put a damper on a season that looked so promising, but the Texans have a strong run game in Arian Foster and their defense has been more than adequate. Also, Andre Johnson returns which should give another spark to the offense. This week, the Texans battle the Jaguars and hope to keep their winning streak alive.

5. New Orleans Saints Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 5
The Saints were on their bye week this week and play host to the Giants on Monday Night Football. The Saints are the front-runners in the NFC South and look prime for the playoffs. If they continue to play well, we’ll surely see them in January, but with the Falcons and even the Buccaneers nipping at their heels, the Saints will have to push extremely hard in these upcoming weeks, fighting for more W’s. The Saints need the rest of the league asking, Who Dat? Again.

6. New England Patriots Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 7
An all too easy win for the Patriots as they advance to 7-3. The Chiefs barely put up a fight and New England took full advantage of a Kansas City offense that couldn’t get any momentum. Atop the AFC East, the Patriots are looking prime for the playoffs. Tom Brady had another good night, passing for over two hundred and thirty yards and two scores, both to his biggest target in tight end Rob Gronkowski. The Pats visit Philadelphia next week hoping to knock them out of the playoff hunt for good.

7. Chicago Bears Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 9
Five straight wins and the Chicago Bears are streaking their way up the NFC ranks. They continued their remarkable turnaround by defeating the reeling Chargers this week. Jay Cutler was excellent, throwing for 286 yards and two scores, although with a broken thumb, Cutler is going to miss a significant amount of playing time, which could put a damper on Chicago’s season. Caleb Hanie is likely to take the reins as the Bears continue to push for a wild card spot. The Bears biggest weapon is their defense and now more than ever they’ll have to “Bear Down.”

8. Baltimore Ravens Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 10
An impressive defeat over division rival Cincinnati this weekend lifted the Ravens into a first place tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. Joe Flacco connected with Torrey Smith to give the Ravens an early fourth quarter lead and Baltimore was able to hold off a last minute assault from the Bengals to secure victory. The Ravens hold the tiebreaker advantage in the division and will now try to surpass the Steelers in the long run.

9. Detroit Lions Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 11
Another tremendous come from behind victory for Detroit helped them rally past the Panthers and overcome an embarrassing defeat last week in Chicago. Matthew Stafford threw five touchdown passes as the Lions fought a seventeen-point deficit to best Cam Newton and Carolina. A wild victory has the Lions playing as an elite squad once again and now they hope to carry that momentum into a Thanksgiving showdown with the undefeated Green Bay Packers. It should be one heck of a battle royale on Thursday.

10. Dallas Cowboys Record: 6-4 Rank Last Week: 12
Three straight wins have pit the Dallas Cowboys in a first place tie with the New York Giants in the NFC East. The Cowboys were able to defeat division rival Washington in overtime this weekend. Dan Bailey kicked the game winner after Redskins kicker Graham Gano missed a fifty-two yard attempt to win. Romo was fantastic yet again, as the Cowboys prevailed, hoping to secure their spot in the playoffs in the following weeks. Cowboys move up two spots on the Power Rankings

11. Oakland Raiders Record: 6-4 Rank Last Week: 13
Surviving a late rally against the Vikings, the Raiders secured a big road win and now are atop the AFC West. Carson Palmer threw for 164 yards and a touchdown, while Oakland capitalized on numerous Minnesota mistakes, such as three interceptions thrown by Christian Ponder. Michael Bush was also dynamic in running for 109 yards, but the Raiders did suffer a set back as Darrius Heyward-Bey was carted off the field, suffering a neck injury in fourth quarter. The Raiders are looking pretty solid and Carson Palmer is finally finding his rhythm and becoming the quarterback the Raiders hoped for.

12. New York Giants Record: 6-4 Rank Last Week: 6
In a game where first place of the division was on the line, the Giants wasted a huge opportunity to take down a battered Eagles team, squandering a chance to take the lead in the NFC East. Eli Manning and company looked dismal out on the pitch and couldn’t pull it together. Manning’s final drive to tie the game ended in a fumble, leading to their defeat. If the Giants hope to be a playoff caliber club, they will need to play with more intensity and eliminate the miss-cues like they did on Sunday night.

13. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 6-4 Rank Last Week: 8
On the brink of tying the Ravens this weekend, the Bengals let the game just slip out of their grasp. Andy Dalton had one of his off days, even with his big numbers; the three interceptions were costly in the end. Now, the Bengals trail both the Steelers and the Ravens in the AFC North and will need to fight harder than ever in the coming weeks to keep their season alive. Here’s to hoping the Bengals don’t become the Bungles. Cheers.

14. Atlanta Falcons Record: 6-4 Rank Last Week: 17
Bouncing back from an overtime loss to the Saints last week, the Falcons held on to a slim 23-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans. Roddy White had seven catches for 147 yards while Matt Ryan delivered a seventeen-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez and Michael Turner punched it from four yards out to put Atlanta up 20-3 in the third quarter. The Falcons were able to hold off the young rookie Jake Locker and advance closer to the Saints in the NFC South. The Falcons are right in the heat of the NFC wild card hunt.

15. Denver Broncos Record: 5-5 Rank Last Week: 18
The Tebow train rides to victory yet again, as Tim Tebow’s twenty yard touchdown run with fifty-eight seconds left, capping a ninety-five yard drive sent the Broncos to a stunning win over the New York Jets. The Broncos are 4-1 since Tebow took over for Kyle Orton and now only trail the Raiders in the AFC West. Weeks ago, no one thought this could be possible, but the game of football is unpredictable and the Broncos are stampeding their way to a playoff berth.

16. Tennessee Titans Record: 5-5 Rank Last Week: 14
An impressive outing for the young Jake Locker who took over for the injured Matt Hasselbeck, doing one heck of a job by giving the Titans a fighting chance against a tough Atlanta team. Locker threw a pair of touchdown passes and looked like a solid leader and nearly made an improbably comeback, but fell shy after the Falcons completed a third down to run out the clock. Chris Johnson had a dismal game, rushing twelve times for only thirteen yards. He could be one of the biggest busts this year and now Tennessee has an uphill climb to make it to the playoffs. Maybe the Titans should think about starting Locker?

17. New York Jets Record: 5-5 Rank Last Week: 15
Another heartbreaker for the Jets as they lose their second consecutive game in four days to fall to 5-5. With a chance to win, Sanchez fired a desperation pass to the end zone in the final seconds, only to be batted down. The Jets are struggling to find their groove this year and the frustration is written all over Rex Ryan’s face who now faces a astronomical fine after cursing at a Patriots fan during halftime of their loss to New England last Sunday. Ryan’s short fuse could be contributing to the Jets short fuse that remains of their season.

18. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-5 Rank Last Week: 16
The injury riddled Bills are losing their composure and are sliding down the AFC ranks. After being trounced in Dallas, the Bills come back and get slaughtered in Miami. Running back Fred Jackson, receiver Donald Jones and cornerback Terrence McGee all went down with injuries over the weekend. With their third straight loss, the Bills are letting a good season go to waste. Next week is one of their biggest games of the year against the rival Jets. This game will make or break them, either giving them a winning record or a losing one. This game has playoff hopes written all over it.

19. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 4-6 Rank Last Week: 23
It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win and one over a New York Giants team fighting to stay alive in the playoff hunt. Vince Young took over for the injured Michael Vick and didn’t dazzle, but thrived in pressure situations and made the plays that helped them win. An eight yard score to Riley Cooper lifted the Eagles up over the Giants 17-10 in a must win game for head coach Andy Reid and his struggling Eagles. The playoffs are still within sight for this team, but now as the pressure mounts, so will the stakes and the Eagles will need to be prepared for them.

20. Seattle Seahawks Record: 4-6 Rank Last Week: 25
A big win for the Seahawks as they improved their record to 4-6. The Seattle defense came up big this weekend against the Rams, as they sacked Sam Bradford five times and forced two fumbles that eventually led to touchdowns. Tavaris Jackson looked pretty good as they sailed over their division rival. Seattle won its first set of consecutive games this year and look to keep the momentum going next week as they host the Redskins.

21. Miami Dolphins Record: 3-7 Rank Last Week: 26
Swimming to three consecutive wins, the Dolphins have been surging as of late. Matt Moore threw for three scores as the Dolphins make a midseason surge. For the third game in a row, the Dolphins have held their opponents to without a touchdown, while they continue to impress. Starting the season at 0-7 had many writing this team off, but for now, they’re making their way back on the teams to watch list.

22. Cleveland Browns Record: 4-6 Rank Last Week: 29
Despite a missed field goal by Phil Dawson, the Browns are able to outlast the Jaguars as Colt McCoy shook off an injury and completed a three-yard touchdown pass to Josh Cribbs to pull ahead of the Jags, 14-10 in the fourth quarter. With Peyton Hillis missing his fifth straight game, the Browns looked to Chris Ogbonnaya who shined with one hundred and fifteen yards on the ground. The Browns edged the Jaguars by the skin of their teeth and will now play division rival Cincinnati next week. The Browns moved up 7 spots in the NFL Power Rankings

23. San Diego Chargers Record: 4-6 Rank Last Week: 19
The charge has evaporated from the Bolts game. With their fifth straight loss in a row, the Chargers are sliding down the AFC West polls and sooner rather than later won’t even be in the running for the playoffs. A disappointing game against the Bears, now have the Chargers reeling for answers about where their season has gone. Phillip Rivers has been struggling this season and has been turning the ball over at an alarming rate. The Bolts may need to consider a different game approach next week against Tim Tebow and the division rival Broncos.

24. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-6 Rank Last Week: 20
So close yet so far as Josh Freeman and the Buccaneers didn’t back down against the NFL’s best. Freeman was wonderful, passing for over three hundred yards and throwing two touchdowns. Unfortunately, it was a late interception that sealed Tampa Bay’s fate, leading them to their fourth straight loss. As good as the Buccaneers played, they couldn’t manage the biggest upset of the year. Guaranteed if the Bucs play this well next week against the Titans, they’ll be sure to win and maybe we’ll get to see LaGarrette Blount run over countless defenders again.

25. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 4-6 Rank Last Week: 22
The Chiefs season has slowly and surely been sliding out from underneath them for weeks. Monday night was no different as Tyler Palko took over for the injured Matt Cassel, making his first NFL start. Palko threw three interceptions and things didn’t look good from end of the first half. This game was a staple of how well the Chiefs have been playing for the last couple of weeks and defined how Kansas City has continued to struggle. After this game, Chiefs fans will be desperate to get Matt Cassel back and re-assess where the season has gone.

26. Arizona Cardinals Record: 3-7 Rank Last Week: 21
John Skelton suffers his first loss as the starter of the Cardinals and appears to be human after all, taking over for the injured Kevin Kolb. Three interceptions and a total of five turnovers contributed to sloppy play in soggy San Francisco that led to the Cardinals demise. There may be no hope for Arizona to come from behind and chase the Niners down, but nonetheless, the Cardinals can play spoiler to other teams looking to reach the playoffs.

27. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-7 Rank Last Week: 24
Unable to beat the Browns on a last second touchdown try allowed the Browns to escape with a W. Jacksonville stayed consistent in the game as Blaine Gabbert and Maurice Jones- Drew were very efficient, unfortunately coming up short in the end. Gabbert and company nearly pulled out the comeback as Phil Dawson missed a field goal, but Gabbert’s three-yard pass tipped off the hands of Mike Thomas and officially sealed their fate. It was a hard fought battle and the Jags aren’t in any position to be jostling for a playoff spot, but that doesn’t mean they can’t give it their best effort.

28. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-8 Rank Last Week: 28
Turnovers and a huge loss in the injury of Adrian Peterson, who went down in the second quarter with a left ankle injury helped the Vikings collapse against the Raiders. Even with a late rally, Minnesota just couldn’t find a way to best Carson Palmer and his squad. Christian Ponder threw three interceptions in the game and the Vikings are far out of reach of any team in the NFC North. The thoughts of next year are already creeping into their heads and why not start thinking about it early?

29. Washington Redskins Record: 3-7 Rank Last Week: 30
Giving the Cowboys a run for their money, the Washington Redskins held their own against Dallas this weekend. Unfortunately, their best effort wasn’t enough as kicker Graham Gano missed the game winning field goal in overtime, giving the Cowboys a chance of their own to win, which they took full advantage of. The Skins have lost their sixth straight, their longest losing streak since they started 0-7 in 1998. Rex Grossman looked like he was back in form as the starter, but the Skins fell just short, bumping them up one spot from the previous week due to their incredible effort.

30. Carolina Panthers Record: 2-8 Rank Last Week: 31
The Panthers put a lot of points on the board and looked to be in good shape to upset the Lions this weekend, but unfortunately let the arm of Matthew Stafford do the talking for them. Carolina watched a seventeen-point lead disappear as Cam Newton threw four interceptions in the game that helped lift the Lions over them. Carolina simply moved up a spot because of how well they played, but nonetheless, this was a game they should have won and just let slide out from underneath them.

31. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-8 Rank Last Week: 27
A dismal performance had the St. Louis Rams fall victim to their struggling division rival Seattle this weekend. Sam Bradford and the offense couldn’t find a rhythm as the Rams battered season continued to haunt them. A season high of ten punts by Rams punter Donnie Jones became the story, as St. Louis couldn’t muster more than seven points all afternoon. A very forgetful season considering the Rams made the playoffs last year.

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-10 Rank Last Week: 32
On their bye week, the Colts are the saddest team in the league right now. With six games left to play, they’re hoping against all odds that they will secure at least one victory in the coming weeks. 0-16 would be devastating and now the Colts only goal is avoid history repeating itself. They take on the Panthers next.

Phil Clark

NFC Goal Line Gossip – Week 11

After Sunday, all fantasy football owners can celebrate the conclusion of universally despised bye weeks. But we do have four teams (Houston, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, New Orleans) that are not in action this week, in order for that process to finally be completed. So, if you have Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Rashard Mendenhall, Donald Brown, Joseph Addai, Delone Carter, Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas, or Mark Ingram on your roster, make sure that they are firmly affixed to your bench.

With that, let’s progress to a detailed look at how the backfields are evolving on every NFC team from a fantasy perspective. This column will provide the comprehensive information that you need, toward helping you maximize your chances of winning your fantasy matchups in week 11.

Check out AFC Goal Line Gossip Here

Arizona Cardinals: Not only is Beanie Wells remaining in the Cardinals’ lineup despite a persistent knee issue, but his 23 carries in week 10 were the second most this season. He also gained 62 yards against Philadelphia, which was the sixth time that he has run for 60+ yards this year. He continues to run with authority, which is even more commendable considering the lingering injury. He has now amassed 588 yards on 146 attempts this season, which ranks him 15th among all backs. While fantasy owners should continue to start him, his numbers could easily be limited against San Francisco’s league leading rush defense, that allows just 73.2 YPG.

Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner failed fourth-and-1 conversion in overtime has been widely discussed, but he did generate 96 yards before that ill-fated play against the Saints. While he narrowly missed his fifth 100-yard rushing performance of the season, Turner has now averaged 107 YPG in his last four games. He has also been allotted 24 APG during that stretch, including 19 carries in week 10. He now has accumulated 788 yards on the season, which places him sixth among all backs. Turner is also tied for third with seven rushing TDs, and should deliver more excellent production against Tennessee’s 22nd ranked rush defense (125.2 YPG).

Carolina Panthers: In Carolina’s two games immediately before their bye, Jonathan Stewart averaged 13.5 carries, which was a considerable increase from the 7.3 APG that he was allotted in the first six contests. It was logical to expect that trend to continue, while DeAngelo Williams’ workload would continue a simultaneous decline. However, Stewart shockingly carried just four times in week 10, and gained 23 yards (5.8 YPC). Meanwhile, Williams was given twice as many attempts, amassing 35 yards (4.4 YPC), including 21 on one rush. While it is difficult to explain why Stewart was once again underutilized, his talent merits starting him as a high end No. 3 against Detroit’s 27th ranked rush defense (134.4 YPG). Meanwhile, Williams should remain on your bench.

Chicago Bears: Matt Forte’s relentless accumulation of total yardage slowed somewhat in week 10, as his streak of five consecutive games with 100+ ended abruptly. Instead, he manufactured a season low 67 yards on 19 touches, including the fewest rushing yards since week 3 (64), and a season low three receiving yards. Despite the jolting lack of production, Forte did score his fourth TD of the year. Plus, he still ranks third in rushing for the season with 869 yards, is third in receptions among RBs with 42, and is fourth with 439 receiving yards. Fantasy owners should not be overly concerned, as he should rebound significantly against San Diego.

Dallas Cowboys: Since thrusting himself into fantasy relevance in week 7, DeMarco Murray has accumulated 601 yards, including his 135 yard romp in week 10. He is averaging 6.0 YPC, and has scored twice, after generating a TD against the Bills. He is now 11th among all backs with 674 rushing yards for the season, despite only having 71 through week 6. Felix Jones remained absent from the lineup, and considering the exceptional performances that Murray has delivered, it is extremely difficult to imagine that he will capture more than 25% of the touches upon his return. Keep Murray active as a high No. 2 against Washington’s 18th ranked rush defense (120.4 YPG).

Detroit Lions: After gaining 44 yards on 10 attempts against the Bears, Maurice Morris is now averaging 51 YPG in three starts. While that is not significantly less than the 65 YPG that Jahvid Best had generated during his six starts, there is a distinct ceiling regarding what Morris can provide to fantasy owners. He lacks explosiveness, which has resulted in just one play in excess of 20 yards. Conversely, Best had five, including an 88-yard run, and three receptions of over 30 yards. Morris has also made very limited contributions as a receiver, collecting four catches for 26 yards. He remains a No. 3 while Best remains sidelined, but nothing more. Kevin Smith has supplanted Keiland Williams as Morris’ backup, but is not worthy of a roster addition, unless Best is ultimately ruled out for the year.

Green Bay Packers: James Starks ongoing time share with Ryan Grant has been discussed at length here, but it continues to be a major dynamic that impacts Starks’ fantasy value. He rushed for 63 yards on 13 carries against Minnesota, which is the exact number of attempts that he has received in five of the past six games. It is also consistent with his 12.1 APG, which is 29th among all backs, and 23rd for those with at least 100 attempts. Grant was given eight carries, yet only managed six yards. If he were running effectively, then the limitations being placed upon Starks would not be so irritating. Plus, another 5-6 carries per game should not put Starks at risk due to an excessive workload. Despite his potential for more, he remains just a high end No. 3 against Tampa Bay, while Grant should not be included on any rosters.

Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson was limited to 51 yards on 14 attempts (3.6 YPC) by the Packers, which was a vastly different outcome than week 7, when he shredded Green Bay for a season high 175 yards. It was his second lowest output this season, and the fewest carries that he has received since week 6. His opportunities were restricted because Minnesota trailed by a considerable amount for the majority of the contest, and the Vikings also faced numerous third and long situations. Still, he is now fifth among all RBs in rushing yardage for the season with 846, and is third with 20 APG. Peterson also scored for the sixth consecutive game, and is now tied for the NFL lead with 10 rushing TDs. Fantasy owners should benefit sizably from AP’s matchup with Oakland’s 25th ranked rush defense (132.4 YPG).

New Orleans Saints: The Saints had been averaged 27 APG entering week 10, but only ran 16 times against Atlanta, much to the consternation of anyone who started a New Orleans RB. Mark Ingram returned after a two game absence to lead the team with eight carries, but only managed 11 yards. Pierre Thomas delivered 29 yards with just six attempts, and Darren Sproles, had only two carries for one yard. Even more distressing for his owners, were his measly two receiving yards on four catches, which was a tremendous drop from the 50 YPG that he had been averaging. He still leads all backs with 60 receptions on the season, and is second with 448 yards. The trio should receive more opportunities in week 12 against the Giants, when Sproles can be used as a No. 2, while Thomas and Ingram are best utilized as No. 3s.

New York Giants: You can add Brandon Jacobs to the list of opposing rushers that have been smothered by San Francisco’s top ranked rush defense, as the seven year veteran managed just 55 yards on 18 attempts (3.1 YPC). He has now accumulated 127 yards on 36 carries (3.5 YPC), in the two games that Ahmad Bradshaw has been sidelined with the cracked bone in his foot. D. J. Ware amassed 68 total yards, with 34 coming on nine carries, and the remaining 34 on five receptions. He is being employed as a change of pace back, but his value will be nearly nonexistent once Bradshaw returns. Jacobs’ owners should plan to utilize him as a No. 2, against the Eagles 17th ranked rush defense (120 YPG), as it appears that Bradshaw will not be in the lineup.

Philadelphia Eagles: LeSean McCoy provided another excellent performance for owners, even though he failed to register 100 total yards for just the second time all season. He fell just short with 93, which included 81 on 14 rushing attempts. That was only the fourth time that he has been limited to less than 95, and he is averaging 100.7 YPG thanks to his stellar production over the course of the year. Plus, he now has assembled 906 yards for the season, which places him second behind Fred Jackson. McCoy also scored a league leading 10th rushing TD from one yard away. In week 3, he erupted for 128 yards against the Giants, and with Vince Young likely to be under center, McCoy will be relied upon heavily in Sunday’s rematch.

San Francisco 49ers: Frank Gore had surpassed 100 rushing yards in five straight games, while bolting for 634 yards on a whopping 100 carries since week 4. But in a sobering development for fantasy owners, his ongoing torture of opposing defenses came to an abrupt halt in week 10, as a knee injury resulted in Gore registering zero yards on six attempts. Kendall Hunter then amassed 40 yards on six carries, including a 17-yard score. He was already a critical commodity for all Gore owners, and those who secured him long ago, are now breathing much easier than those who failed to do so. If he is still available in your league, take a moment before you continue reading this column and get him. Right now. Then, monitor Gore’s status closely leading up to Sunday’s daunting challenge against Baltimore.

Seattle Seahawks: Marshawn Lynch was able to build upon the season high 135 yards that he generated in week 10, by generating 109 on 32 attempts against what is normally an extremely formidable Baltimore rush defense. He also exhibited an impressive display of aggressiveness with his running style, repeatedly moving the pile, and punishing potential tacklers. After gaining 263 yards in his first six games, he has now generated 244 in the past two. That has vaulted him into 21st among all backs in rushing yardage for the season (507). He also scored for the third consecutive game, collected 58 additional yards on five receptions, and has proven that fantasy owners can rely upon on a weekly basis. He can be employed as a No. 2 in his matchup with Washington’s 18th ranked rush defense.

St. Louis Rams: The healthy version of Steven Jackson continues to line up, take the ball, and deliver fantasy points to his owners. After gashing Cleveland for 127 yards on 28 carries, he has now rumbled for 417 yards in his last three games, and 583 yards in his last five. That has vaulted him into ninth for the season with 707 yards on 140 attempts (5.1 YPC). He is also averaging a mammoth 27 APG since week 8, and will not experience a decrease in his sizable workload. That will continue to benefit fantasy owners, who can utilize him as a low end
No. 1 against the 12th ranked Seattle rush defense (106.4 YPG).

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: In five games prior to his knee injury, LeGarrette Blount averaged 66 YPG and 15 APG. In the two games since, the numbers have fallen to 53 and 11.5. Fantasy owners should be extremely concerned, since Earnest Graham’s absence has not resulted in Blount becoming an every down back as was widely speculated. He only managed 34 yards on a miniscule 10 attempts against the sturdy Houston rush defense, which was his third game with less than 35 yards this year. Kregg Lumpkin accumulated 61 total yards on nine touches, as the Bucs continue to employ him on passing downs. Blount is at best a high end No. 3, against the Packers’ eighth ranked rush defense.

Washington Redskins: Mike Shanahan reverted to his villainous ways in week 10, by inexplicably starting the consistently ineffective Ryan Torain, and allotting him 10 first half carries. This coming one week after Roy Helu had again demonstrated that he is the Redskins’ most talented back, by generating 146 total yards, and establishing a new franchise record with 14 receptions. While Torain’s employment was a shock, his paltry production was not (20 yards). With the exception of week 4 (135 yards), Torain has managed a hideous 53 yards on 31 attempts (1.7). When he was finally inserted into the lineup, Helu generated 54 total yards, including 41 on six carries (6.8 YPC). Despite overwhelming evidence that Helu will manufacture more yardage, Shanahan has proven very capable of ignoring logic. That is why you simply cannot start any Washington backs.

DC

Fantasy Football Rundown

NY Jets at Denver
The Jets will be rolling their eyes at any sort of college option offense tonight. You can bet that even after a little success the Broncos will look foolish forcing a one-week wonder offensive scheme on prime time TV. I like many fantasy New York Jets tonight, and even like them as 6 point favorites to easily cover. The Broncos are about to face a team that even on a short week are extremely motivated to get back into the winning department. I expect a lot of Shon Greene and think Mark Sanchez could have a big day. As for Tim Tebow, unless the use the option as a wrinkle to an aggressive spread offense that features many deep shots down the field to get those safeties out of the box, then this game could get ugly.

Tampa Bay at Green Bay
The overlook game is where a team literally over looks an opponent for a bigger, typically divisional match-up the following week. That won’t happen here, even if the Buccaneers could keep this game close Aaron Rodgers will pull away in the second half. I really don’t like any Tampa players in this match- up, even in a blowout “got to throw” to get back in the game type offense, Josh Freeman and his WR’s are out of sync and frustrating for fantasy owners.

Carolina at Detroit
Now, this could be an overlook game. The Lions know they get to host the Packers next week and think they should be able to knock of the champs in their own house. The voice around the locker room could have been something like “It’s only the Panthers, we got this”.
I expect a type battle, one in which fantasy options could really pay off. The Lions may sputter at first and find themselves even losing after the first quarter. Cam Netwon is a frustrating QB to face and should confuse and possibly stun the crowd in challenging for the upset. I really like Steve Smith this week, I would have love to recommend him in our Start’em Sit’em Gauntlet, but he is one of the Elite 30. Other possible sleepers include Brandon Pettigrew Jeremy Shockey and Jonathan Stewart

Jacksonville at Cleveland
Except for MJD, there is really no one that you must absolutely start. Colt McCoy has upside but overall the game should be very low scoring. Vegas is predicting an over/under of 34.5 which is not a good sign for anyone that you are thinking of playing.

Oakland at Minnesota
This could be a great game for Ponder to show why he was drafted high in April’s NFL Draft. He is not fantasy starter-worthy but he does have better grasp of the offense and has a good match-up. Still, who are we kidding.. this is a game of the RB’s, both teams should lean heavy on the run in a back and forth contest. Both the Raiders and Vikings are not exactly front runners for being known for shutting down the power run game, and a full does of either Michael Bush and Adrian Peterson should result in high numbers.

Buffalo at Miami
Miami is talking about stringing together a winning streak that will not only save their coaches job, but ruin their chance for a nice draft pick. Don’t get me wrong I believe in playing for pride but a 7 game winning streak is not happening. Still, there’s no reason why the Fish couldn’t spoil the Bills postseason dreams before the calling it quits on their stinky season. Buffalo has fallen hard and the recent injuries to the offensive line will not only affect the passing game but hurt the fantasy stock of Fred Jackson. I expect a lot players on the Bills to continue to disappoint fantasy owners once again. As for the Dolphins, the green light is a go for expectations to a high scoring and impressive win. I think Reggie Bush has found his groove and deserves a start in a reserve roll on fantasy rosters
Dallas at Washington
This game is going to get ugly. It is a divisional match-up but much like the Eagles the Redskins just can’t get things together. There is really on one on Washington worth starting where as the Cowboys have great fantasy match-ups across the board.

Cincinnati at Baltimore
Back when I was handling the Power Rankings, I had really believed that this was the year for the Ravens. But after seeing multiple upsets and vanilla offensive play calling I have now changed my mind. The Bengals are a team on the rise and have amazing young talent that will lead their team for years. I think both offense’s tee-off and run up the score board a little bit. Both are frustrated with the Steelers and need this game more than they want to lead on. Ray Rice should see a heavy work load as well as Cedric Benson for the Bengals. Both passing games should be in playoff form as the AFC North is too close to take this game lightly, I expect a high scoring affair and one you should overlook the defensive stats for. Las Vegas is calling for an Over/Under of 40.5, my guess is we see a something closer to 50. Check out my predictions along with all the other Gridiron Experts in out Week 11 Pigskin picks

Arizona at San Francisco
Despite a one-sided affair in which the 49er’s are projected to win by 10, the Cardinals are feeling great about their spoiler victory over the Eagles last week. That confidence could translate into great fantasy production for players like Beanie Wells. If the Cardinals can keep this game close his value does hold for solid yardage. Although if the 49er’s strike fast the running game could be abandoned Risk vs. Reward.

The 49er’s passing game has yet to really be something to rely on for fantasy owners, Alex Smith has earn the respect from the team and local bay area and we may start to see the his leash loosened for more deep threat opportunities in the coming weeks. This match-up clearly looks like one that may see more deep strikes, add him and Michael Crabtree to possible sleepers

Seattle-3 at St. Louis
Not a must-see game for us average fans, but one that could translate into huge fantasy points. Both teams are known for running up the score against each other. Great fantasy match-ups for Brandon Lloyd and Marshawn Lynch

Tennessee at Atlanta
The Falcons and Titans have a lot in common. They both are the 2nd seed in their respect divisions and both are feeling the pressure of having it run away on them. The Falcons should be pressing after an embarrassing overtime performance that pretty much handed the game to Drew Bree’s and the Saints. The Titans on the other hand see their opportunity with Matt Schuab going down and will want this one badly. This could be the turning point for either team, I expect a playoff caliber game one that should be high scoring and aggressive, green light on all tier 1-2 fantasy options

San Diego at Chicago
Great game to watch but maybe not one that will help fantasy owners out. Matt Forte is a high percentage of the entire team’s offensive output, the Chargers have been pressing on defense and may choose to shadow even double team Forte the whole game. This means that the Bears passing game could reach out and connect with targets that are not usually in the routine. As for the Chargers offense, Vincent Jackson was shutdown which introduced to the fantasy world a Vincent Brown (two Vincents, C’mon really?) He played very well and may continue to see targets. Gates will be the wildcard that will get mismatches as best he can, but overall the Bears defense has just been too impressive for fantasy owners to expect anything but average numbers.

Philadelphia at NY Giants
Rumors are now that Mike Vick may suit up. Either QB really does not stand a chance against a Giants team that is annoyed with their heart breaking losing on the road last week. The Eagles are amazing on paper but play confused undisciplined football.Every Eagle is a fantasy gamble this week, not knowing what to expect. The Giants look strong and match-up well against the 5-9 and below average line-backing core. I expect great fantasy numbers from all Giants Sunday Night

Kansas City at New England
The Patriots are handed a gift Monday night, one in which all fantasy options get added fantasy potential. The Chiefs should be able to move the ball against the Patriots defense, which hardly is a shut-down unit anymore, but the troubles in KC are execution from within, Dwyane Bowe is a must-start, but one that requires a little prayer.

This week marked the start of Thursday night football beginning with an AFC West showdown that gave one team sole possession of the division whilst transitioning into a weekend filled with a number of blowouts, bad coaching decisions and some shock and ah, man moments.

The Bears manhandled the Lions as jungle fever took on a new definition at Solider Field Sunday afternoon, while Tony Romo and the Cowboys put up big numbers against the Bills. The Falcons proved that three times is not the charm on fourth down conversions, while the 49ers have pushed all doubters aside and the Eagles have taken a turn in the wrong direction.

Another spectacular weekend of football with more on the way and we can only hope that this season will continue to surprise, stun, and even appall us all the way to the playoffs.

Lets take a look at the Power Rankings heading into Week 11.

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 9-0 Rank Last Week: 1
Are you kidding me? Monday night’s match-up wasn’t even close as the Packers manhandled the Vikings, defeating them 45-7. Aaron Rodgers was precise and accurate, throwing four touchdowns leading the Packers to their 15th consecutive victory including last year’s postseason. The Packers still remain undefeated and the team to beat, nothing chances from last weeks Power Rankings

2. San Francisco 49ers Record: 8-1 Rank Last Week: 2
Are there any doubters left? This weekend the Niners proved once and for all that they’re NFC contenders with a chip on their shoulder. San Francisco won their seventh straight game defeating a tough New York Giants squad. Alex Smith played well, but SF’s defense took charge intercepting Manning twice and batting down his pass in the waning seconds to secure at 27-20 victory. The Niners continue to strike gold.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 7
Can we officially say the Pittsburgh Steelers are back? The hangover seems to have subsided as Pittsburgh grabbed a much- needed win over division rival Cincinnati. Rashard Mendenhall ran for two scores and the Dick LeBeau defense intercepted Bengals QB Andy Dalton twice in the fourth quarter to win and place themselves in a tie atop first place in the AFC North. Terrible Towels are waving once again.

4. Houston Texans Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 8
The Texans finally look playoff ready. Matt Schaub threw for two touchdowns, while Arian Foster, Ben Tate, and Derrick Ward each ran for scores of their own. With four wins in a row, Houston is playing their best football ever, even with Andre Johnson still missing in action. Matt Schaub did sustain an extensive injury however, making him unavailable for the rest of the season. Matt Leinart is expected to take over after the bye, but rest assured the Texans should do just fine with an amazing defense and run game.

5. New Orleans Saints Record: 7-3 Rank Last Week: 9
The Saints should be sending thank you cards to Mike Smith this week, as they were able to capitalize on a Falcons gamble gone wrong. Heading into overtime, the Falcons decided to go for it on a fourth and inches from their own twenty-nine yard line. Having previously picked up two earlier conversions, the decision seemed rational, with the exception of being deep in their own territory. John Kasay kicked the 26-yard game winner as New Orleans barely had to exert an effort in overtime to win. The Saints move atop the NFC South.

6. New York Giants Record: 6-3 Rank Last Week: 4
A tough outing coming off a rout of the Patriots, the Giants certainly had their hands full against one of the NFC’s best. New York is still at the top of the NFC East and one of the best teams in the league, with a good shot to win the division this year. Eli Manning was solid and the Giants had a chance to win, but fell short. Next week, maybe they can bounce back against Philadelphia.

7. New England Patriots Record: 6-3 Rank Last Week: 10
The Pats took sole possession of the AFC East this weekend beating the Jets on Sunday Night. New England hasn’t looked dominant as of recent, but are looking to get back to being the AFC’s best. Tom Brady was in his prime again as he threw three touchdown passes, including two to Rob Gronkowski. This weekend’s game was all too easy for the Pats, snapping a three game winning streak for the Jets, making a big statement to Rex Ryan and are now looking to run away with the division.

8. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 6-3 Rank Last Week: 5
Even with a loss, the Bengals proved they are AFC contenders, holding their own against a hard knocks Steelers squad. The Bengals seem like a scrappy and feisty team, suffering in the final quarter with two costly turnovers by first year Andy Dalton. It was a good effort, but not good enough. Nonetheless, Cincinnati put up a big fight and proved they can sling it with the best of them. Look for this team to continue to get better as the season progresses.

9. Chicago Bears Record: 6-3 Rank Last Week: 12
Chicago made the up swing after defeating Philadelphia last week and once again this week, the Bears “bear-downed” division rival Detroit, tying them for second in the NFC North. The offense, led by Jay Cutler was on fire, but the defense was spectacular, picking off Matthew Stafford four times and causing turnovers left and right. Devin Hester ran another punt return back for a touchdown extending his NFL record to 12. The Bears mauled the Lions and are now gunning for Green Bay atop the NFC North.

10. Baltimore Ravens Record: 6-3 Rank Last Week: 3
It was the Jaguars fiasco all over again. The Ravens got off to a slow start and couldn’t pull out a miracle win in Seattle. After last week’s thrilling win against the Steelers, the Ravens were on pace to take control of the AFC North, but once again may have gotten a little too over-confident and squandered what should have been an easy victory. The Ravens look to get back on track next week against Cincinnati.

11. Detroit Lions Record: 6-3 Rank Last Week: 6
U.G.L.Y. spells the disastrous outing the Lions had this weekend in Chicago. Matthew Stafford by far had his worst game of the season, throwing four interceptions, when he had only thrown four to this point, while receivers Calvin Johnson and Nate Burleson turned the ball over during crucial drives. This game will be very forgettable for Detroit and in order to keep pace in the division, they need to move forward and focus on next week’s game against Carolina.

12. Dallas Cowboys Record: 5-4 Rank Last Week: 15
There’s the good, the bad, and the ugly performances by Tony Romo, but this week, the stellar Tony Romo showed up and the Cowboys stampeded over the Bills 44-7. With consecutive wins, the Cowboys could be on the surge as their next three opponents have a combined record of 6-18. The Cowboys are close to roping in the Giants and will look to do so sooner rather than later.

13. Oakland Raiders Record: 5-4 Rank Last Week: 17
The first Thursday night game of the season ended in style for the Oakland Raiders as they edged division rival San Diego. This game probably made Oakland breathe a little easier in signing Carson Palmer as he threw two touchdown passes, both to Denarius Moore while running back Michael Bush ran for over thirty times and one-hundred fifty seven yards. Palmer looked more relaxed in his second start in black and silver and now the Raiders are atop of the AFC West. Al Davis is smiling from above.

14. Tennessee Titans Record: 5-4 Rank Last Week: 19
The Titans seem like they’re on a stair master from week to week, winning and taking care of business against Cam Newton and the Panthers this weekend. Chris Johnson has finally gotten back to his running ways, rushing for one hundred and thirty yards and a touchdown, as the Titans sacked Newton five times, holding him to just 209 yards passing. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 219 yards, hitting receiver Damien Williams deep for a 43-yard touchdown pass. It’s a different story for this team week to week, but hopefully they’ll be able to chase down the Texans before it’s too late.

15. New York Jets Record: 5-4 Rank Last Week: 11
In a game for sole possession of first place in the division, the Patriots grounded the Jets as Mark Sanchez looked shaky and threw two interceptions, one really late in the game that helped seal the victory for New England. The Jets didn’t live up to the Rex Ryan hype this week, but look to gain ground next week against Tim Tebow and the Broncos on Thursday night.

16. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-4 Rank Last Week: 13
The Bills looked dismal this week against the Cowboys and are slowly but surely letting their season slip away. With such a promising start, Buffalo looked to have turned things around from a year ago, but with back-to-back losses, the Bills are looking for answers. Ryan Fitzpatrick didn’t look good this week and David Nelson’s stunt, hugging his cheerleader girlfriend may have been the highlight of Buffalo’s day. This team has to pick up the pace if they expect to survive into January.

17. Atlanta Falcons Record: 5-4 Rank Last Week: 14
The most costly decision of Mike Smith’s career came in overtime against the Saints this weekend. Officially, the loss can be chalked up to Smith’s poor choice and now the Falcons are chasing the Saints in the NFC South. This game could have been won if the Falcons only punted the ball in overtime. The Falcons take on Tennessee next week and hope to make smarter decisions this time around. Lesson learned.

18. Denver Broncos Record: 4-5 Rank Last Week: 22
Tim Tebow has turned this team around and now the Broncos are in the heat of the AFC West division race. Clipping the Chiefs this weekend, the Broncos have won the last three out of four games and are officially back on track. Tebow only completed two passes against Kansas City, but ran for over forty yards and a score and has the city of Denver believing in their team again. It’s Tebow Time and hopefully that time will continue to carry them to victory.

19. San Diego Chargers Record: 4-5 Rank Last Week: 16
The Bolts have lost their charge. Another dismal performance for San Diego as they fell to division rival Oakland. With their fourth loss in a row, San Diego is now tied with Kansas City and Denver in the division. This team has so much potential to be a dynamic squad, but can’t seem to connect the dots when it matters most. With so many blown opportunities to win games, the Chargers have a lot of work to do to get back to being the team they were when they started the season.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-5 Rank Last Week: 18
This team isn’t the same Tampa Bay squad that went 10-6 last year. They barely mustered an effort against the Texans this weekend as Josh Freeman was picked off three times and sacked four times. The Bucs are proving that they’re unable to contend with some of the NFL’s elite and will simply need to play better football if they expect to win games.

21. Arizona Cardinals Record: 3-6 Rank Last Week: 28
The Skeleton Crew…excuse me, the Skelton crew, along with sidekick Larry Fitzgerald showed up to stun Michael Vick and the Eagles. Starting in place of the injured Kevin Kolb, John Skelton threw three touchdown passes and led the Cardinals to their second straight victory. Larry Fitzgerald was phenomenal as the Cardinals are attempting to turn their no show season into a mediocre one. With this huge win, the Cardinals are moving on up.

22. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 4-5 Rank Last Week: 21
This season has gone from great, to decent, to questionable. The Chiefs were on such a big run and have now suffered another loss, dragging them to a tie with the Chargers and the Broncos in the division. Matt Cassel was replaced by QB Tyler Palko due to an injury on the last drive and now the Chiefs could be without him for the remainder of the season, which may hurt them even more in the long run. This team is struggling and needs to find answers quickly. The Chiefs may have proven that may be overrated.

23. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 3-6 Rank Last Week: 20
The defending NFC East champion Eagles were expected to be in the playoffs and be Super Bowl bound after a number of big name acquisitions in the off-season. Instead of being the team of destiny this season, Philadelphia has struggled miserably and has lost seven of their last eight home games. Michael Vick was mediocre over the weekend and couldn’t bring the Eagles to a last minute comeback. Michael Vick may be injured and this could spell trouble for the rest of this once thought to be dream team.

24. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-6 Rank Last Week: 27
The Jaguars easily beat the winless Colts as Blaine Gabbert threw for a touchdown, while Maurice Jones-Drew ran for a score as well. It was the first road win for the Jags, as Jones-Drew became the second player in Jacksonville franchise history to run for over 6,000 yards. The Jaguars are moving in the right direction.

25. Seattle Seahawks Record: 3-6 Rank Last Week: 24
A surprising victory for the lowly Seahawks as they were able to defeat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and move a little higher on the food chain in the NFC West. Marshawn Lynch plunged in for one yard touchdown, while the Seahawks forced three turnovers to hand the Ravens their third loss. Hopefully the Seahawks can fly high with this momentum into next week’s game against the Rams.

26. Miami Dolphins Record: 2-7 Rank Last Week: 29
The Fins get their second win in a row defeating the Redskins 20-9 as Reggie Bush ran for two touchdowns and the Dolphins D intercepted Rex Grossman twice, earning their first home victory of the year. The Dolphins end a drought of seven straight losses at home dating back to last November and are now gaining some momentum, even if the momentum is coming a little late in the season.

27. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-7 Rank Last Week: 31
Lucky to pull out a victory in Cleveland due to a botched snap, the Rams earned their second win this weekend, defeating the Browns 13-12. Steven Jackson had a huge rushing day, running for 128 yards and Sam Bradford was able to contribute 155 yards to the aerial attack. The missed field goal by the Browns helped the Rams tremendously; hopefully St. Louis won’t rely on luck for the rest of the season.

28. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-7 Rank Last Week: 23
Round one against the Packers was close, but round two wasn’t even a contest as the Vikings couldn’t get going offensively and were only able to score off a Packers muffed punt. Minnesota simply played poorly and gave up after halftime. This team has a lot of talent, but was no match for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. The Vikings are last in the NFC North and need to start building a team that can contend with the teams in their division.

29. Cleveland Browns Record: 3-6 Rank Last Week: 24
A botched snap led to a defeat in the waning minutes against the Rams this weekend as Phil Dawson, known for being an extremely efficient field goal kicker, failed to put the ball through the up-rights. Dawson was able to make four field goals earlier in the day, but the most important one skipped off the turf throwing off Dawson’s timing and ended the Browns chances for a victory. With the fans booing them off the field, the Browns should be ashamed they couldn’t pull together for a win that seemed so certain.

30. Washington Redskins Record: 3-6 Rank Last Week: 25
The magic number is five, five straight losses by the Washington Redskins that have gotten them to this point and the most consecutive losses in the career of Mike Shanahan. Rex Grossman came off the bench after being replaced just four weeks ago, and didn’t do much better than before, throwing two interceptions and ending with a passer rating of 58.7. A promising start has been flushed down the toilet and now the Redskins are fighting with the Eagles to remain out of last place in the NFC East.

31. Carolina Panthers Record: 2-7 Rank Last Week: 26
A frustrated Cam Newton and the Panthers looked miserable against the Titans losing 30-3. Newton was sacked five times and threw an interception, just managing over 200 yards passing. This was the Panthers worst performance of the season as Carolina just played poorly this weekend and need to win next week against the Lions. Rebuilding has only begun and even with this loss, there is a lot to learn, especially for the young gunslinger.

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-10 Rank Last Week: 32
Curtis Painter was finally yanked from the game in the fourth quarter being replaced by “I stepped out of the back of the end zone,” Dan Orlovsky. Only managing three points, the Colts are certainly on pace for 0-16. One enthusiastic Colts fan held up a sign at the game asking, “where have all the good times gone?” He’s got a point and you can only feel sorry for this once elite team.

Gridiron Experts
Phil Clark

NFC Goal Line Gossip: Week 10

You might have done the proverbial double take when you did not see any teams with a week 10 bye. Particularly if you have any Texans, Steelers, Colts, or Saints, and were convinced that those teams had played every week since the regular season began.

But that is correct. After six consecutive bye weeks, all 32 teams will be in action. Then in week 11, the final four teams that have yet to receive their week of rest, will do so. Sound logical? No, of course not. But that is where we are at.

That includes the initial Thursday night contest of the season, which involves two long-time AFC West rivals – Oakland and San Diego. While it does not appear that Darren McFadden will be able to perform (as of this writing), make sure that if you plan to start Michael Bush, Ryan Mathews, or Mike Tolbert, that they are active before the Thursday evening kickoff.

With that, let’s progress to a detailed look at how the backfields are evolving on every team from a fantasy perspective, which will provide the comprehensive information that you need, toward helping you maximize your chances of winning your fantasy matchups in week 10.

Arizona Cardinals: Beanie Wells has been forced to overcome both hamstring and knee injuries, in addition to substandard QB play this season. Yet, he entered week 9 with 506 yards and seven TDs, and was presented with an appealing matchup against a St. Louis rush defense that was the league’s most hospitable to opposing runners.
But Wells suffered a neck stinger, and was forced to navigate a Ram defense that had zero respect for Arizona’s passing attack with John Skelton under center. That resulted in a season low 20 yards on 10 carries, which was far below the 84 YPG that he had been generating. Despite the anemic output, he is 16th in rushing with 526 yards, and tied for third with seven rushing TDs. If healthy, he is a must start against Philadelphia’s 23rd ranked rush defense (124 YPG).

Atlanta Falcons: A well rested Michael Turner returned to a desirable matchup with a beleaguered Indianapolis defense, that had been gashed for 144 YPG, while allowing the second most rushing TDs (10). While Turner did not deliver his third consecutive 120+ yard rushing performance, he provided sufficient production to assist fantasy owners, with 71 yards and a TD on 19 carries. He has now accumulated 692 rushing yards for the year, which places him seventh among all backs. His one-yard TD boosted his season total to seven, which is tied for third. The Falcons will continue to employ the Burner extensively, and he remains a must start against the Saints 17th ranked rush defense (119.7 YPG).

Carolina Panthers: Anyone who has watched Carolina this season, noticed very clearly that Jonathan Stewart is a more dynamic back than DeAngelo Williams, and that has been discussed extensively in this column.
The fact that Stewart’s carries rose dramatically in the Panthers’ last two contests, should thrill perturbed fantasy owners, who suffered while he averaged just 7.3 APG in his first six games. That number nearly doubled to 13.5 in weeks 7 and 8, as he quietly became the team’s lead back. He had already established himself as an effective receiver, collecting 23 passes for 230 yards. But the expanded workload elevates him into a viable No. 2 option, against Tennessee’s 24th ranked rush defense (126.8 YPG).

Chicago Bears: Matt Forte demonstrated yet again that he is among the NFL’s elite backs, by rumbling through the Eagles for 133 yards on 24 attempts (5.5 YPC). He has exploded for 686 yards in his last five games (137 YPG), and his season total of 805 yards is second highest among all backs. Plus, it has him on pace to surpass his current career high (1,238). Forte also caught three passes for 17 yards, and is now second among all backs in receptions (41), and yards (436). If that isn’t impressive enough, Forte also leads the league with 1,241 yards from scrimmage. He did fumble (twice) for the first time this season, which does not alter his status as a must start against Detroit’s 10th ranked defense (331.2 YPG).

Dallas Cowboys: Since receiving his first start in week 7, DeMarco Murray has assembled three consecutive high quality performances. He has exploded for 466 yards on 55 attempts (8.5 YPC) during that stretch, including 139 on 22 carries versus the Seahawks in week 9. That was the first time that any back has been able to rush for 100 yards against Seattle all season. He has run with authority, and with a 170 YPG average, should have produced well enough to maintain the No. 1 slot when Felix Jones (50 YPG) returns from his ankle injury. However, it remains to be seen what will actually occur when Jones does reappear. Monitor that situation closely, but plan on using Murray as a No. 2 against Buffalo’s 20th ranked rush defense.

Detroit Lions: In the six games that Jahvid Best started for Detroit, he averaged 113 total yards, with 390 of his 677 yards being generated on the ground. In the two games that Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams attempted to replace him, they have averaged 101 total yards, with 177 of their combined 202 yards coming on the ground. While they have done an adequate job in Bests’ absence, the Lions are far more explosive with their No. 1 back in the lineup. While it is doubtful that he will play on Sunday, his status is still in question. He is a No. 2 if available against the Bears’ 23rd ranked defense. Otherwise, Morris is a desperation No. 3, and Williams does not receive enough touches to merit consideration. Newly signed Kevin Smith is not worthy of a roster addition either.

Green Bay Packers: Throughout the regular season, much of the discussion regarding James Starks has focused on the percentage of his workload, as opposed to what is doing with it. He entered week 9 averaging 53 YPG, and appeared to deserve an increased role beyond the 11.8 APG that he had been averaging. But he did capture a larger percentage of touches against the Chargers, carrying 13 times for 66 yards. It was his fourth game with 60+ yards, and his second straight. Meanwhile, Ryan Grant’s role was reduced beyond his 8.14 average, as he only carried four times for 16 yards. Grant’s diminished presence should provide Starks owners with moderate optimism, although you would like to see him garner even more opportunities. He is a high end No. 3 against Minnesota’s fifth ranked rush defense (94.4 YPG).

Minnesota Vikings: Adrian Peterson spent the majority of his season delivering exceptional numbers even though opposing defenses had no genuine need to respect Minnesota’s passing ability. But Christian Ponder facilitated matters immediately, by connecting on a 73-yard throw in his first play as the starter. That established the threat of a vertical attack, and enabled Peterson to rush for 261 yards in two games, after averaging 90 YPG in the initial six. Plus, he generated 76 receiving yards in week 8, after only manufacturing 49 in his first seven contests. He is currently fourth in yardage (798), and tied for first in rushing TDs (nine). If he continues to garner Ponder’s passes, fantasy owners will reap even more significant rewards. He faces a Packer rush defense that allowed him 175 rushing yards in week 7.

New Orleans Saints: The one consistency in this very murky state of affairs, is that Darren Sproles will deliver a favorable number of fantasy points every week. He has already established a new career high for rushing yards in a season (347), after gaining 42 yards on just four attempts against the Buccaneers. He also collected five passes for 57 yards and a TD, and leads all RBs with 56 receptions, and with 446 yards. Pierre Thomas also delivered excellent production, with 91 total yards and a TD on 12 touches. Chris Ivory carried 15 times for 67 yards, and has 21 attempts in two games. Sproles is a high end No. 2, Thomas a low end No. 2, and Ivory a low end flex, against Atlanta’s seventh ranked rush defense ( 96.5 YPG).

New York Giants: The original announcement regarding the cracked bone in Ahmad Bradshaw’s foot, sent fantasy owners scrambling to determine if Brandon Jacobs was available. After a plethora of conflicting reports concerning the degree of his latest foot malady, Bradshaw ultimately was inactive, which propelled Jacobs into his first start since November 2010. He delivered a season high 72 yards on 18 attempts, which was just the second game in which he has exceeded 30 yards this year. He also scored his third rushing TD, which was his first since week 4. If Bradshaw returns for Sunday’s matchup with San Francisco, he can be utilized as a No. 2. If not, Jacobs can also be employed in that role. Just lower your expectations for either back, as the 49ers’ possess the NFL’s best rush defense (70.8 YPG).

Philadelphia Eagles: Even though LeSean McCoy was held to less than 80 rushing yards for just the second time this season, fantasy owners are not about to complain. Not only did he still deliver sufficient production with 71 yards on 16 attempts against the Bears, but he is now the NFL’s leading rusher, with 825 yards for the year. He also scored his ninth rushing TD, which ties him for the league lead in that category. McCoy supplemented his performance with 46 yards on five receptions, and has now caught 28 passes for 184 yards. He leads many leagues in fantasy points, and you are already planning to start him against Arizona’s perpetually challenged defense (ranked 28th).

San Francisco 49ers: Frank Gore continued his impressive surge in week 9, by amassing 107 yards on 19 attempts against the Redskins. It was his fifth straight game in excess of 100 yards, as he has exploded for 634 yards on an even 100 carries since week 4 (7.1 YPC). He has risen to third in rushing for the season, with 782 yards, and his 159 attempts are also the NFL’s third highest. He did suffer an ankle sprain during the second quarter in Washington, but did not allow that to deter him. His status should of course be monitored, with an enticing matchup against the Giants’ 25th ranked rush defense looming on Sunday. Hopefully, fantasy owners secured Kendall Hunter to their rosters long ago, for insurance in case this exact scenario took place. .

Seattle Seahawks: There was little reason to believe that Marshawn Lynch would have a productive outing in week 9. He had not delivered a 100-yard rushing performance all season, and had failed to run for even 35 yards in four different games. Even worse, he was facing a Dallas rush defense that had been the NFL’s best until week 8. While that appeared to be a recipe for Lynch to register another exceptionally low yardage total, he neglected to read that script. Instead, he displayed a combination of power and speed to gash the Cowboys for a season high 135 yards on 23 attempts. Plus, he scored his fourth TD of the year, all of which have occurred in his last five games. Understandably, fantasy owners will be tempted to use him, but should not expect a repeat performance against the Ravens (86.8 YPG).

St. Louis Rams: Fantasy owners who selected Steven Jackson were subjected to a frustrating September, as a
lingering quad issue limited him to just 79 yards on six attempts. But perseverance has paid dividends, as
Jackson has now averaged 114 YPG in his most recent four outings, after rumbling through the Cardinals for 130 yards on 29 attempts in week 9. Despite the sluggish production initially, Jackson has now vaulted to 14th in rushing for the season with 579 yards. He has also been allotted 22.5 APG in the past four games, will continue to receive an enormous workload. That will enable him to deliver more exceptional production, against a Cleveland defense that was just ripped for 261yards by Houston.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LeGarrette Blount’s returned after a two game absence, but provided fantasy owners with just modest production. He ran for 72 yards on 13 attempts (5.5 YPC), but was hardly utilized after being penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct in the third quarter. There was hope that he would ascend into every down status, now that Earnest Graham will no longer capture the snaps on third downs. But instead, Kregg Lumpkin was employed in the role that Graham filled when he was available. Blount is still a low end No. 2, but fantasy owners were certainly hoping for more. Do not be surprised if he delivers disappointing numbers against the Texans’ fourth ranked run defense (91.4 YPG).

Washington Redskins: When fantasy owners started Ryan Torain in week 8, due to conjecture that he would be the Redskins’ starter, they suffered the horror of watching Mike Shanahan opt for Tim Hightower as the featured back, with Torain delivering a rancid -5 yards. In week 9, Hightower’s absence appeared to pave the way for more production from Torain, but he only managed 14 yards. Now, feel free to drop Torain completely, after rookie Roy Helu’s performance against San Francisco’s top ranked rush defense. Helu rushed for 41 yards on 10 carries, and collected a franchise record 14 receptions for 105 yards. He is definitely worth a roster addition, if you can still find him on your waiver wires. And, if you are willing to risk the ever-present Shanahan factor, Helu can be utilized as a No. 3 against Miami.
