Top 5 NFL Coaches of 2011

Conventional wisdom says that Jim Harbaugh is going to win the Coach of the Year. The rookie San Francisco 49er coach is worthy, but there is a coach who didn’t have as much success this season, but deserves consideration. If I had a vote for COY – which I don’t – my vote would go to another coach who oversaw even a more incredible turnaround. Here is one guy’s top five – okay, I cheated, top six coaching rankings for the 2011 season.

5. Tom Coughlin/Bill Belichick

Both of these guys get overlooked every year, especially Belichick. It is because year in and year out their teams are solid. This year Belichick’s team overcame one of the NFL’s worst defenses, but still found a way to put together another great regular season and of course a run back to the Super Bowl. How good is ‘The Hoodie’ and his staff? For the second time they filled a glaring hole on defense by moving a wide receiver to a defensive back and got decent production out of him.

Coughlin’s Giants also had injuries to major players to deal with and partly because of that, struggled in the early part of the season. When the chips were down in the second half of 2011 Coughlin’s team was on point again. They got healthy and played great football down the stretch beating the top two seeds on the road to get back to the Super Bowl.

4.  Marvin Lewis

As the 2011 season approached, I thought the Bengals were going to be terrible. They were coming off a last place 4-12 season and they were destined to lose quarterback Carson Palmer. They replaced Palmer with rookie Andy Dalton. Historically starting a rookie quarterback in Week One is a recipe for disaster. Dalton wasn’t even a first round pick, but somehow Lewis and his staff were able to get their rookie quarterback – and receiver A.J. Green – on the same page as the rest of the offense. They were able to do it fast. They made it to the playoffs with a rookie quarterback who had to play against some of the toughest defenses in the league.

How is this for a rookie season baptism? Dalton had to face the top three defenses – yardage wise – in the league. He faced Pittsburgh (twice), Baltimore (twice) and Houston(twice including the playoffs). Believe it or not, the Cleveland Browns ranked tenth in the league and of course Dalton had to play them twice as well. Playing seven games against top ten defenses with a rookie quarterback and winning nine games with a playoff berth as well – Coach of the Year consideration in my book.

3. Gary Kubiak

Yes he had one of the league’s best rushing attacks and one of the league’s best defenses, but this is a team that had not made the playoffs in its history. Add to that the injuries the team had to overcome to not only make the playoffs, but win a playoff game is remarkable.

Kubiak and his staff had to overcome injuries to four of their top players. Arian Foster was out for much of the first half of the season. Mario Williams was out almost the entire year and Matt Schaub was lost for the season about half way through the year. Elite wide receiver Andre Johnson was limited to about half a season due to separate hamstring ailments. To make things worse they lost second string quarterback Matt Leinart in his first game replacing Schaub.

It didn’t matter. Kubiak and the Texans put together a solid first half of the season, played good enough in the second half of the season and actually won a playoff game – and almost a second – with a third string quarterback.

2. Jim Harbaugh

Most people are going to have Harbaugh at number one and with good reason. He took a franchise that had been struggling for years and in one season took them to overtime in the NFC Championship Game. He was able to take a good defense and help make it great and was the first coach to get solid, consistent play from quarterback Alex Smith. The team won seven more regular season games than the year before and although played in the league’s worst division proved many experts wrong by beating most people’s dark horse Super Bowl pick – the New Orleans Saints – at their own game, not with defense, but with offense.

1. John Fox

Fox’s Broncos were coming off a disaster of a season. They won just four games and finished last in the AFC West. This year the team made a four game improvement, won the division and a playoff game. It was a weak division and they ended with a .500 record, but the brilliance of Fox goes far beyond the numbers.

You could say the Broncos got lucky during their long string of wins in the middle of the season and you would be right, but the reason Fox should get the nod is that he did something coaches just don’t do in the NFL. His team was going nowhere so he changed his entire thought process and figured out a way to get his team winning. Fox recognized the team wasn’t going anywhere with Kyle Orton at quarterback so he made the switch to Tim Tebow. Everyone knows how the story ended, but what goes under-appreciated is Fox and his staff role in the transition.

Fox changed the entire way the team did business on the field. They went from a conventional 21st century offense to an offense out of the 1940’s in a matter of weeks. They did it on the fly without the benefit of training camp or even an off-season. Fox found a way to win seven of the last eleven games with a quarterback who had trouble completing the most elementary of NFL pass routes. I don’t think the approach they had to take this year has a chance of working long term, but for this year, with that talent, the job John Fox did makes him the runaway coach of the year for 2011.

NFC Championship Preview

In this season of incredible, record-breaking offensive production, it looks like the old adage “good defense beats good offense” holds true…in the NFC at least. Both the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants pulled off upsets of superior offensive clubs in the Divisional round. Now one of these two team is assured of a shot at immortality at Superbowl XLVI.

Back in September, if you had the vision to wager on one of these two squads winning the NFL championship, you would be a very happy bettor right now. The Giants were a 28 to 1 long shot to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, while the 49ers were an incredible 60 to 1 buy.

These two teams met earlier this season, a Week 10 27-20 San Francisco home victory that saw the Giants nursing a slim second half lead before giving way late.

Most of us expected the “Dream Team” from Philadelphia or the Dallas Cowboys to win the NFC East, but it was the Giants who pulled an unlikely but timely late-season rally to win one of the toughest divisions in football. They got hot at the right time, winning three of their final four games in the regular season and entering the playoffs as the healthiest team in the league.

The Giants defense then showed that like the 49ers, they could dominate games as well. New York held Atlanta’s vaunted offense to zero points, then pulled an unlikely upset of the 15-1 defending Superbowl champion Packers at Lambeau Field. The G-men enter the NFC Championship red-hot, healthy and full of confidence.

San Francisco’s journey to the conference title game might go down as one of the most surprising in recent memory. Few had high expectations for an disappointing squad that was expected to finish at the bottom of one of the worst divisions in pro football and was led by a rookie head coach.

But Jim Harbaugh took the reigns of an underachieving team and chose to stick with his much-maligned veteran quarterback, Alex Smith, and worked a modern-day miracle. Led by a dominant defense, Harbaugh guided his team to a 13-3 finish and one victory away from re-gaining the glory of the Red and Gold teams of the 1980′s.

Though the Giants ended the regular season as the leagues worst rushing offense at 89.2 yards per game, they’ve been able to ramp up the run game in the past month. Both backs, Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs will be involved and could be spelled by D.J. Ware.

Look for New York to attempt to establish a rushing attack early to set up play-action passing opportunities. This won’t be easy because the 49ers have the NFL’s top ranked rush defense.

This offense belongs to Eli Manning and the passing game. Manning passed for over 300 yards in the previous match-up, so look for more of the same. Successfully establishing an early ground game will benefit the Giants’ downfield attack.

In November, San Francisco double-covered Hakeem Nicks. This allowed for Victor Cruz to have a big game (6 catches fro 84 yards) while single covered by CB Carlos Rodgers. Mario Manningham was also big in this game (6-77-1 TD) and is talented enough to make an impact should the Niners choose to blanket Nicks again.

Alex Smith‘s revival has been both unexpected and refreshing. He enjoyed by far his finest NFL campaign. Jim Harbaugh has used Smith in a role that is suited to his strengths and that is somewhat similar to the Superbowl winning teams from the 2000′s (Baltimore and Tampa Bay) that won titles with a dominant defense, solid ground game and a signal-caller that managed the game well and limited turnovers.

Frank Gore will be the key to San Fran’s offense. He missed the previous game against the Giants, but his replacement, Kendall Hunter did very well while being limited to only six carries. His 17 yard touchdown scamper was the winning points in the game.

The 49ers would like to chew up the clock and hand the ball to Gore 20+ times and keep Hunter involved with about 10 touches. Like New York, play-action will be a big part of the San Francisco playbook.

Tight End Vernon Davis has become the focal point of the 49ers passing attack. His late touchdown last week, in the same spot of the same endzone that Terrell Owens scored an eerily similar post-season touchdown, won the game versus the Saints.

Michael Crabtree is the club’s top wide receiver and will look to challenge the Giant’s cornerback tandem of Corey Webster and Aaron Ross. Ted Ginn makes more of an impact as a returner, but is looking questionable to play in this game with a knee injury.

Prediction

This game looks to be another classic in the storied playoff history between these two powerhouses. No other two teams have matched up in the playoffs more often than the Giants and 49ers.

As with any game, turnovers will be the biggest key in this game. That is a distinct advantage to San Francisco who are led by a strong run game and a quarterback who takes fewer chances downfield and is more of a game manager.

Eli Manning is more of a gunslinger who is not afraid to take chances. Though he has done a better job this year of limiting interceptions, in the end a late turnover will cost the Giants the game and a chance at another meeting with the Patriots in two weeks.

NFL Playoff Picks: Championship Week

This weekend’s outcome could create a few similar match-ups for Super Bowl XLVI.

The Ravens and Giants met back in 2001 for a boring blowout where Trent Dilfer handed the ball off most of the game in a 34-7 win. Dilfer completed 12 of 25 passes for 153 yards and 1 touchdown, numbers very similar to the type of fantasy stats Joe Flacco is averaging today. The Ravens’ defense allowed just 152 yards, forcing 5 turnovers, recording 4 sacks, and not allowing an offensive touchdown en route to the franchise’s first Super Bowl victory.

If the 9 point favorite Patriots win this weekend and meet the Giants in the Super Bowl, we would have a grudge match of the game that got away from a perfect season. Eli Manning led the winning drive and was well deserving of the MVP award as the super underdogs beat the perfect Pat’s in a thrilling 17-14 victory back in 2008.

If the San Francisco 49er’s win the NFC Championship, it will be the first time the team will return to the big stage since beating the San Diego Chargers at Super Bowl XXIX back in 1995. The 49er’s won 4 Super Bowls between 1985 and 1995, but have barley made post season appearances since.

NFL Playoff Preview: Saints at 49ers

While ultimately the New Orleans Saints San Francisco 49ers might not be the closest playoff game this weekend, to me it is the most interesting. It matches one of the best defenses in the league against one of the best offenses. It forces the explosive Drew Brees on the road – where the Saints have not had as much success – and outdoors. It will give us a chance to see how good San Francisco’s defense really is. They have a number of Pro Bowl players who beat up on the weak NFC West, but they took it to some good offenses as well.

When San Francisco has the ball

The common thought process here is the 49ers need to pound the ball with Frank Gore and the running game. They need to keep the ball away from New Orleans and keep that offense on the sidelines. To me the key for the 49ers on offense is quarterback Alex Smith. If the 49ers are too one dimensional, they are never going to put up enough points to win this game. They need to control the ball, but it is important to take their shots down the field. The Saints score points, but they give up points as well. San Francisco’s offense needs to take advantage of that.

The 49ers need to score touchdowns when they get their opportunities. That might sound obvious, but no team kicked more field goals this season. Field goals are not going to beat the Saints. Red zone offense and taking advantage of their opportunities to score six instead of three will keep some of the pressure off of the San Fran defense.

When New Orleans has the ball

There are two keys to the game when the Saints have the ball. Everyone raves about the Saints passing game, but what people tend to overlook is the running game. They rushed for over 150 yards against the Lions last week. If defenses have to deal with the running game it makes the passing game that much more lethal. It also slows down the only real way to contain the passing game. If the defensive line needs to worry about the run, they can’t be as effective rushing the passer.

The 49ers need to put pressure on Drew Brees without a lot of blitzing. If they can get pressure on the passer they can expose Brees’s biggest vulnerability. For all of his great qualities as a quarterback, Brees is not very tall. If the 49er pass rush can get in his face bringing just four pass rushers, Brees is susceptible to turning the ball over. Unlike Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers – whom Brees is often compared to – Brees tends to take more chances than his other two MVP type quarterbacks. If he is pressured, Brees will turn the ball over. Not a lot of course, he threw fourteen interceptions, but possibly enough to set Smith up with a short field or two.

Special teams

With two good teams, often special teams are the deciding factor. Darren Sproles has the ability to break a game open on special teams, but San Francisco has one of the best punters in the league with Andy Lee. Lee led the league in punting average. If he can keep Sproles contained and keep the field position in his teams favor, it will force the Saints to go 80 or more yards and help out the defense. New Orleans’ Thomas Morstead is no slouch either with the fifth best average in the league. David Akers is used to the conditions in the elements in northern California. New Orleans’ John Kasay – at least this year – is not.

This brings the game to the thing that might make the biggest difference – the weather. If the conditions are windy and sloppy – like they can be in San Francisco – the advantage goes to the home team. When it all comes down to it, San Francisco keeps it close, but in the fourth quarter the Saints offense can only be contained for so long – Saints 31 49ers 23.

10 Amazing NFL Draft Steals, Starting in the Playoffs

In a perfect world every team’s top NFL Draft picks would get ten out out ten grades and be leaders in the playoffs for years to come. But everyone knows quality talent can slip through the cracks to the second or third day at the NFL draft. While sometimes a player is the product of the right system, late round gem’s do pass by teams in need, while the hype of first round talent is statistically never as great in hindsight. The best scouts do get their guy, some chalking it up to great scouting, others to luck, with costly busts not talked about around the local area.

The following is a look at players that are not only starters in this year’s NFL playoff run, but are difference makers for their respected teams.

10. QB T.J Yates- Texans
5th round selection (152nd overall) of the 2011 Draft

Yates did not exactly earn his way into a starting role, more like he earned the right to keep it from a default of options. Injuries to Quarterback’s Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart opened the door for the underrated play of 5th round draft pick T.J Yates from North Carolina.

Some may argue that Yates is this years “Rex Grossman” or “Trent Dilfer” of the playoffs, a manage the game-QB, yet I tend to disagree. Already added to the record books for the first QB to win a Texans Playoff game, T.J Yates is gaining the confidence from the team and fans with every passing down. He is looking better than expected and in my opinion has great prowess and determination, something that is needed to become a leader at the QB position.

Things will be interesting next year once Schuab becomes the starter again, with a lack of NFL talent at the QB position around the league, a phone call or two could be made in acquiring this new fan favorite Texan.

9. DE Justin Tuck- Giants
3rd round selection (74th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft

The Giants have a nose for finding excellent pass rushers and Justin Tuck might have been one of their better late round picks. The 2005 draft class overall grade for defensive ends wasn’t projected to be anything special, still names like Marcus Spears, Luis Castillo and Shaun Cody did all get extra attention early on. The Giants were patient and stole Tuck in the 3rd round. For the last 7 years Tuck has been a wrecking havoc on QB’s as he has cracked the double digit sack total 3 times (10,12,12) and been a vocal leader amongst his team

8. RB Frank Gore- 49er’s
3rd round selection (65th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft

I tried to find a player from each team in the 2011-12 playoffs, and sadly could only pull Frank Gore out of the bag for San Fran. The 49er’s are currently a team made up of 1st round talent and don’t seem to make the most out of the middle to late rounds. Still, Frank Gore is definitely a sleeper gem that 49er fans can be happy with, he is no doubt deserving of being on this list.

Frank Gore has been able to reach the 1000 yard mark in all but two of his 7 NFL seasons. This Sunday’s post-season game is a first for Frank Gore, along with many 49er’s as the team hasn’t made the playoffs since 02

7. DE Elvis Dumervil- Broncos
4th round selection (126th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft

At 5 feet 11 inches tall many NFL scouts had their doubts about this 2006 4th round pick defensive end. Yet after an amazing 07-08 season with 12 sacks and a interception, Elvis Dumervil was thought as the one of leagues best steals of the ’06 draft. In 2009 defensive coordinator Mike Nolan moved Dumervil to outside linebacker in his 3-4 defensive scheme, but keeping him as a defensive end on 4-3 passing down situations. The result was Dumervil leading the league in sacks with 17.

6. TE Jimmy Graham- Saints
3rd round selection (95th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft

Someone somewhere needs to make a movie about this guy, Jimmy Graham is a great NFL story. Not only is Graham a lethal redzone threat he looks to take over the fantasy world for years to come.

5. RB James Starks- Packers
6th round selection (193rd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft

Starks found himself the lead RB playoff starter for the Packers Super Bowl run last season. His solid performance and above average stat’s has lead him to a split RB starting roll for this 2011 season. Starks was a massive steal in the 6th round of the 2010 draft, a player that some believe was a lifesaver at many points throughout the Packers dominance over the past 2 years. Definitely a diamond in the rough find

4. DE Brett Keisel- Steelers
7th round selection (242nd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft

The Steelers were eliminated from the playoffs in an upset Wildcard weekend, but that won’t stop me from adding one of the greatest all-time steals in NFL draft history. Brett Keisel was taken in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL draft and has made the Steelers what they are today. Keisel has been an anchor for the Steelers defensive line and compiled 200 tackles over the last 10 years

3. RB Ahmad Bradshaw- Giants
7th round selection (250th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft

A Tiki Barber replacement that seems to get better with every year. Bradshaw has been practicing just once per week since returning from his foot injury in Week 13, yet his value to the team is unspeakable. Bradshaw and Jacobs work so much better when they are both healthy and active. One of the reasons why the Giants don’t want to let this RB go. As a pure value pick 250th overall Ahmad Bradshaw makes the NFL Draft Steal list for playoff teams in 2012.

2. WR Marques Colston- Saints
7th round selection (252nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft

How in the hell did 31 teams pass on this guy? Was their zero scouting done for Hofstra. Back in 2006, following the trade of wide receiver Donte Stallworth, Colston was inserted into the starting lineup for week 1 of the season. He becoame one of the few seventh round picks to ever to start week 1 for their team and has never looked back.

1. QB Tom Brady- Patriots
6th round selection (199th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft

Of course it’s Tom Brady! who else could be added to a list of amazing NFL draft steals. The New England Patriots made the unusual decision to carry four quarterbacks on the roster back in 2000. Brady started the season as the fourth string quarterback, behind starter Drew Bledsoe and backups John Friesz and Michael Bishop; by the end of the season, Brady was number two on the depth chart behind Bledsoe. During his rookie season, he was 1-of-3 passing, for six yards.

Tom Brady holds numerous regular season and postseason records, including: most touchdown passes in a regular season (50); most consecutive regular-season home wins (31); highest winning percentage of any quarterback during his first 100 starts (76 wins); most completions in one Super Bowl (32); and the list goes on for days.

Brady is the fourth-fastest player to reach 200 career passing touchdowns (116 games) and he is the first quarterback in NFL history to have reached this mark with fewer than 100 career interceptions (88 interceptions)

Without a doubt Tom Brady was the greatest NFL Draft steal of all time.

The point spread for this up coming NFL playoff weekend is massive, and something I want nothing to do with. Either the oddsmakers are using the same computer that brought us a terrible BCS championship game or someone has been drinking the kool aid. Clearly the Tebow magic can keep things closer than 14 points and as the Texans and Giants a few of our pick’em experts think they make for decent upset picks on the road.

Who’s Got Enough to Win the Super Bowl? 

It’s time to break down the NFL playoff teams and discuss what will be their route toward victory or what will ultimately be their downfall. Some might seem obvious, others maybe not so much, but here is NFL Playoff Rundown to each team that could make a run toward the Lombardi trophy.

AFC

New England

• They win because . . . Tom Brady stays healthy and the passing game stays as lethal as it has been for the entire season. No team – maybe in the history of the league – utilizes the tight end better than the Patriots have this season and you still have Wes Welker to worry about.

• They lose because . . . The defense stinks. True they have not given up as many points as some other teams, but offenses have gone up and down the field on them all season. If they get into a game where Brady and company are slowed down even a little, they could be in for a short playoff run.

Baltimore

• They win because . . . They are allowed to play Ravens football. Although the defense doesn’t get the headlines of a few years ago, it is still pretty good. Like third in the league good. That Ray Rice guy is pretty good too. They have tried to even things out the last few years, but this team is still built on defense and running the ball. They are allowed to do that, they win.

• They lose because . . . They have to play out of character. If they have to play from behind or if they turn the ball over they will have to put the game on Joe Flacco’s shoulders. Flacco has gotten better every year, but the Ravens lose when Rice is not the most effective offensive player on the Ravens. Take the running game out of the offense and the Ravens fall.

Houston

• They win because . . . They play like the Ravens. They play great defense and pound with the running game. The Texans have the best one two running back duo in the league and a defense that ranks second in the league in yards allowed.

• They lose because . . . They get poor quarterback play. Week 17 Yates was hurt early, nothing serious, but enough to force the Texans to insert Jake Delhomme into the game. Either it’ll be lack of experience from Yates or lack of ability from Delhomme, one way or another this team has a weak link.

Denver

• They win because . . . They play outstanding defense and the opponent’s offense doesn’t show up. If they have great games running the ball, and the defense plays like it has most of the season, they’ll have a chance.

• They lose because . . . Not to state the obvious, but because of the caliber of quarterback. Tim Tebow has been a great story and John Fox should win Coach of the Year for how he was able to get this team to the playoffs, but this offense can’t score enough points to succeed in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh

• They win because . . . Their defense dominates the way it can and Big Ben is healthy enough to be effective. They have been solid throwing the ball all season.

• They lose because . . . They can’t stay healthy on offense. The running game is going to take a step back with the loss of Rashard Mendenhall. The passing game could be fragile as well with as beat up Roethlisberger has been – one big hit and the offense is crippled.

Cincinnati

• They win because . . . I hate to sound like a broken record, but they win if their defense can keep them in the game. The Bengal defense has played well all year. If they can keep them in the game and allow the offense to run the ball and take some pressure off rookie Andy Dalton, they can advance.

• They lose because . . . They fall behind or turn the ball over. As much praise as Dalton and fellow rookie A.J. Green have deservedly received this year, the fact is outside of Denver they have the least effective offense in the AFC field. This offense is not ready to consistently comeback against top teams.

NFC

Green Bay

• They win because . . . The offense keeps humming right along. For my money Aaron Rodgers has had the best season of any quarterback this year. Most years that would be a no brainer, but a couple other guys have had ridiculous years too. That being said the Packers offense has been slowed down once this whole year, I don’t see it happening a second time.

• They lose because . . . Before the Lions’ game I was going to say if Rodgers goes down, but Matt Flynn made me put that logic to bed. The real reason the Pack lose is the defense. There has been many games that have proved that there are holes against explosive offensive opponents.

San Francisco

• They win because . . . The defense continues to dominate and Alex Smith continues to play within himself. Smith has made great strides this year, but if he tries to do too much, or if the defense slips up just a little, the offenses in this field will kill you.

• They lose because . . . The offense can’t control the clock with the running game and the defense is not dominating. A team like the 49ers needs to play solid in all phases. Even a sub-par special teams game will doom the team by the Bay.

New Orleans

• They win because . . . Not to state the obvious, but they simply out score you. If Drew Brees is allowed to pick apart even a top defense he will. They have shown this season that they have no remorse and will pound you into submission if you can’t stop them.

• They lose because . . . The offense can’t keep up its pace. Weather could be a big factor for the Saints. They will have to go into possibly windy San Francisco and then potentially cold and snowy Green Bay. If they can deal with the elements, The Saints could end up in the Super Bowl.

New York

• They win because . . . Eli Manning continues to play at a high level. The defense has played well for stretches this season. The running game has had its moments, but the whole team has been inconsistent this year. The one steadying factor has been Manning.

• They lose because . . . The defense can’t do enough to keep them in the game. Manning has brought his team back in the fourth quarter a lot this year, but that won’t last long in the playoffs, especially on the road where they will have to play the majority of their games.

Atlanta

• They win because . . . They realize they need to rely on Matt Ryan and the passing game to support, not supersede Michael Turner and the running game. While improved, the passing game can’t keep up with the other offenses in this field. The Falcon defense certainly can’t.

• They lose because . . . They can’t keep the scoreboard under control. They might not have the offense to win a shoot out against the Giants, much less the Saints or Packers. They fall behind and are forced to abandon the running game, they are in trouble.

Detroit

• They win because . . . Their young stars play like it’s a regular season game with the pressure of winning it all. If Matthew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh and the rest of the young Lions stay poised, they have the talent to win a few games in the playoffs.

• They lose because . . . They show their immaturity. This team is not beyond shooting itself in the foot with stupid penalties. They are a quickly rising team in the NFC, but they are a few pieces away if they don’t control themselves. If they eliminate the stupid penalties they have the talent to hang with anyone in this field.

A 2011 NFL “Year in Review”

So maybe you didn’t win your fantasy league. Maybe you didn’t even make it to the fantasy playoffs. Or perhaps you’re hoisting your invisible fantasy trophy over your head right now. Whatever the case, this was surely a season full of highlights, lowlights and anything & everything in between for the NFL.

Next year we’ve got some hot rookies looking to stay gold in their upcoming sophomore seasons. Andy Dalton, Tim Tebow and Cam Newton saw the most success among all rookie QB’s. While Dalton and Tebow have their teams poised to make a run at the playoffs, Cam and his Panthers will be watching the games from whichever couch they feel is best. Still, Newton has had a season that will go down as a great one for a rookie quarterback. He’s rushed for 14 touchdowns and thrown for 20 more. Not too shabby for a 22 year old Heisman winner from Georgia I’d say.

Some key season ending injuries were no doubt the cause of much frustration within the fantasy ranks this year. Early on, Jamaal Charles went out for the season against the Lions. This was a crushing blow not only to the Chiefs team, but to his fantasy owners that expected top notch numbers out of him this year. While the Chiefs have had many multi-faceted problems this season, the loss of Charles was definitely worth a mention as it took out their entire running game.

Darren McFadden has essentially missed the last 9 full games with an injury of his own. Although he hasn’t been put on injured reserve, he might as well have been, as his fantasy numbers went from stellar, to non-existent in his absence. This opened the door for Michael Bush to step up and have a solid season in place of McFadden. Those owners lucky enough to pick up Bush in place of McFadden weren’t totally devastated at the injury, but surely missed the excitement that Darren had to offer with his running style.

And then there’s the Colts playing their season without their perennial all-pro, Peyton Manning. To say it’s been disastrous would be an understatement, although the Colts have managed to string together a couple wins in a row. Some think this could potentially (with a capital P) save coach Jim Caldwell’s job. If they can pull off a victory in the final game of the season, Caldwell could have even more breathing room as it relates to his job, but surely won’t make any new Colt fans in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. The question then remains: if the number one pick in the draft is lost, would the two or three victories be worth it? Manning mentoring Luck probably wouldn’t be such a bad way to go. As history has shown, many of the QB greats have grown under the wings of superstar predecessors. But don’t pack your bags for Indianapolis just yet Mr. Luck, this game has a funny way of surprising us.

DeMarco Murray showed us all a reason to be legitimately excited about drafting him early next year. He lit up the Rams earlier this year for over 250 yards on 25 carries. Yeah, he soon became the Cowboys’ featured back for the rest of the season (until he got hurt of course). A solid runner, Murray gave Dallas plenty of optimism and reason to believe their running game can be a force to be reckoned with for some time to come.

I’m sure you know, but in case you live underneath a rock, Drew Brees just broke Dan Marino’s single season passing record of 5,084 passing yards set in 1984. Brees now has a total of 5,087 passing yards on the season, and if he plays in it, still has one game left to add on to that number. The record breaking game in New Orleans vs. the Atlanta Falcons was delayed for a few minutes while Brees and his team mates were allowed to relish in the historical moment. If you’re anything like me, you were thinking [finally a record broken without controversy by someone that doesn’t use performance enhancing drugs and that is actually likeable]. Apparently Marino himself is okay with his record falling to this particular player. Upon the record being broken, Marino is quoted as tweeting “great job by such a special player.” A humbled Brees later gave much credit to his team mates for accomplishing this feat. While addressing his team mates in the locker room after the game, Brees stated, “there may be only one name that goes into the record book, but it’s all about you guys.” If that’s not the definition of humility and class, then I don’t know what is. Congratulations Drew.

And in what is arguably the biggest story in the NFL this year, Tim Tebow has grabbed fans of this league by the collar and is staring intently into the eyes of his haters. You can dislike him all you want, plenty of people already do regardless of his performance. But one thing is certain: you can’t deny his dedication to winning or question his intensity. Tebow might be gaining publicity by treading in water that many choose to never disturb, but at the end of the day we’re still talking about him, and that’s the point. Publicity is publicity. Love him or hate him, the whole country is talking about him and that bodes all kinds of well for Mr. Tebow and his pocket book in the future. How’d you like to be his agent right now? In all seriousness, the bottom line here is clear, Denver owes a great deal of its success this season to that Tebow guy. And to briefly touch on the taboo-portion of this Tebow debate, the integrity of this league should never be compromised by one individual and his personal beliefs, regardless of our own thoughts about them. Tim Tebow is a good football player and that’s why we watch him.

That’s the bottom line. His religious faith has nothing to do with it. He can believe anything he wants, but it’s our responsibility to keep our focus and discussion about his on-field play, not his off-field beliefs. Now if Tebow can offer the same courtesy in return and when asked a football question, comeback with a football, not religious based answer, then all will be balanced in the equation. And besides, the guy isn’t deliberately offensive, nor is he breaking any league rules. He just chooses to very openly speak his mind about his faith. This may or may not turn out to be a problem for him, but that depends on his ability (or lackthereof) to constantly keep his word filter on full blast. Everyone knows that based on general respect for others, it’s an unspoken rule to only go so far with religious talks, especially when in the media spotlight like Tebow. I’ve yet to witness him crossing that line, and even if he tried to, rest assured the Bronco’s PR person would quickly remind him of that proverbial boundary. The fact remains, the Tebow story is an intriguing one by any definition, regardless of your take on the guy. He has become a favorite topic for media outlets, a conversation piece among friends and a surprising new addition to the list of “must watch players” in this league, and he’s done all this whether we like it or not. We have to at least respect that.

So, before the season started, what if someone had told you that the Chargers, Eagles, Colts and Bears would be eliminated from playoff contention, and the Jets, Giants and Cowboys are one week away from sharing the same fate? And what if they told you the Texans, Bengals, Broncos, Raiders and Lions were all either in the playoffs or one week away from getting there? And suppose they told you the 49ers would be nearing a 13 win, first round bye type of a season, would you have believed any of that? Well the time for believing is now.

Heading into the final week of the season, here are a couple of key games to watch as well as a full breakdown of all playoff scenarios:

Dallas Cowboys (8-7) @ New York Giants (8-7)
This is for all the marbles. Whichever team wins takes the reigns as champions of the NFC East. Both teams have had up and down seasons, with all the reason in the world to hold their heads up even if ousted from the post-season. The bright spots have outweighed the dark this season for these two teams, despite less success than originally predicted. And what’s more exciting than two division rivals duking it out for a playoff spot on the final game of the year? This is one you won’t want to miss!

Baltimore Ravens (11-4) @ Cincinnati Bengals (9-6)
If you’re Cincinnati it’s simple, win and you’re in. Baltimore on the other hand has a few scenarios that could play out for them. If they win and the Patriots lose, they’ve got the number one seed in the AFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. If they win and the Patriots win as well, they will secure the second seed and a bye in the first round. A Steelers loss will also clinch the division for them. This is a crucial game in determining many AFC post-season matchups.

NFL Power Rankings Week 14

The first two teams have booked their tickets to the playoffs and have won their respective divisions with now time being of the essence for the remaining division leaders and wild card contenders to push for those few spots that still exist. It was a fantastic weekend of football. No doubt about it.

America’s game of the week put the Packers perfect season on the line, as they narrowly escaped with a victory, while Tim Tebow and the Broncos managed to pull out another come from behind victory. Oh, and lets not forget Jason Garrett’s questionable coaching decision that cost the Cowboys the game against the Cardinals.

It’s crunch time in the NFL as the playoffs inch closer and closer. December could be the month to remember or one to forget depending on your allegiances because now it’s an epic battle to the end of the season. With that…

Lets glance at the Power Rankings heading into Week 14. Shall we?

1. Green Bay Packers           Record: 12-0               Rank Last Week: 1
An unbelievable season was put to the test again this weekend against a Giants squad desperately searching for a win. The Packers were able to win on a last second field goal from the leg of Mason Crosby, keeping a perfect season in tact and officially clinching the NFC North division. Aaron Rodgers thrived under pressure leading a last minute drive to set up the game winning field goal. Nothing changes from the previous week, as Green Bay still remains the team to take down. Next Week: vs. Raiders.

2. Baltimore Ravens              Record: 9-3                 Rank Last Week: 2
Inching closer to the AFC North division title, the Ravens put a hurting on an ailing Browns team that had running back Ray Rice run for a career day of 204 rushing yards. Joe Flacco didn’t necessarily throw the ball well, but with 290 yards on the ground and a Lardarius Webb punt return for a touchdown, the Ravens were able to easily take care of business. Baltimore looks ready for the playoffs. Next Week: vs. Colts.

3. New Orleans Saints           Record: 9-3                 Rank Last Week: 3
The explosive Saints continue to put on a show, as Drew Brees made passing history, passing for over 4,031 yards on the season, the first NFL quarterback to eclipse the 4,000 yard mark in twelve games. The Saints remain undefeated at home this season and look set for an epic playoff run. If they continue to pour on the points, the Saints could be unstoppable come January. The only question that remains is who is willing to stop them? Next Week: at Titans.

4. New England Patriots       Record: 9-3                 Rank Last Week: 4
The Patriots improve to 9-3, winning their fourth straight game, holding off a late rally from the winless Indianapolis Colts. Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to tight end Rob Gronkowski and withstood an onside kick attempt that could have given the Colts a chance to win the game. The Patriots look set to win the AFC East, now vying for home field advantage in the playoffs. With that said, New England will need to win out for the rest of the season. Next Week: at Redskins.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers            Record: 9-3                 Rank Last Week: 5
Nipping at the Ravens heels, the Steelers are looking for a prime wild card spot. They once again took care of business against division rival Cincinnati this week. It wasn’t even a contest as Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdowns and the game was pretty much sealed by the half. The AFC North is still up for grabs, with Baltimore holding a slim advantage. Now the Steelers will be hoping the Ravens take a late season dive, thrusting them to the top of the division. Next Week: vs. Browns. (Thursday night)

6. San Francisco 49ers          Record: 10-2               Rank Last Week: 6
The second team to record double digit victories this season has also clinched the NFC West division, cementing their spot in the playoffs. The Niners looked sharp against an ailing Rams team, shutting them out 26-0. Now, Mr. Jim Harbaugh, only the third rookie coach in NFL history to win the division, has to plan for the postseason. It should be interesting to see what he comes up with. Next Week: at Cardinals.

7. Houston Texans                 Record: 9-3                 Rank Last Week: 7
T.J. time in Houston paid off with a big win for the Texans, as they were able to hold off a fighting Atlanta Falcons squad. Given the Texans are riddled with injuries, they are still finding ways to win. With their sixth win in a row, the Texans are looking good to wrap up the AFC South and third string quarterback T.J. Yates is performing quite well considering the circumstances. He threw his first NFL touchdown this weekend, but Houston suffered another big loss in receiver Andre Johnson, injuring his left hamstring. This team could on its way to making their first playoff appearance in franchise history. Next Week: at Bengals.

8. Denver Broncos                 Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 14
With such a pathetic start, one would have pinned the Broncos to be in last place this season, but a huge resurgence has them in a tie atop the AFC West with the Raiders. Tim Tebow and company did it again this weekend, completing another come from behind victory to make Tebow 6-1 as the Broncos starter. Will this ride throughout the rest of season and possibly the playoffs? Who knows, but doubters are now turning to believers in this magical mystery team and Tim Tebow continues to improve from game to game. Next Week: vs. Bears.

9. Tennessee Titans               Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 15
Hallelujah! Chris Johnson is slowly and surely returning to form, rushing for a hundred fifty three yards this week against Buffalo. With this win, the Titans have quietly entered into the wild card race. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for Tennessee who is looking to stride past the Jets, Bengals, and even the Raiders for one of two coveted spots. Matt Hasselbeck has the experience to possibly get this team further than all might have thought this season. We’ll see if the Titans have the fight in them the remainder of the season. Next Week: vs. Saints.

10. New York Jets                 Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 16
Gang Green was able to slide past the Redskins in a fourth quarter rally to improve to 7-5, giving them a better chance to contend for a wild card spot. Although their game over the weekend was less than stellar considering the Jets only produced a hundred sixty total yards after three quarters. It was Shonn Greene’s big running day that helped the Jets overcome the struggling Skins. Nonetheless, Rex Ryan still believes his team will be in the Super Bowl. We’ll see come February. Next Week: vs. Chiefs.

11. Dallas Cowboys               Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 8
With the best intentions at heart, head coach Jason Garrett rightfully cost his team the game this weekend in Arizona. Calling a timeout right before Dallas kicker Dan Bailey kicked it through the up-rights iced him long enough so his second kick wasn’t even close. Arizona forced overtime and came up big as Kevin Kolb dumped a short pass to LaRod Stephens-Howling who zigzagged fifty-two yards for the game winning score. Dallas’ winning streak was cut short, but nonetheless they are still in a good position to win the NFC East. Next Week: vs. Giants.

12. Oakland Raiders            Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 9
Oakland had a chance to take over first place in the division but stumbled against the resilient Miami Dolphins. Carson Palmer had a decent day passing, but the Dolphins surged out of the gate and took care of business at home. The Raiders are in a good position to either win the AFC West or grab a remaining wild card slot. However, Oakland needs to keep winning and make sure that Tebow and the Broncos don’t surpass them. Next week: at Packers.

13. Cincinnati Bengals          Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 10
The Bengals just couldn’t overcome a sleuth of turnovers and mishaps that had them eliminated from winning the AFC North this weekend. Still vying and in the running for a wild card spot, the Bengals will have to play much better if they expect to go beyond the regular season and eliminate many of the gaffes they had on Sunday. Sunday’s game was a big eye opener for this squad who now know what kinds of threats that may lie ahead come postseason time. Next Week: vs. Texans.

14. Atlanta Falcons               Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 11
A team that was sporadic on offense for most of the day now find themselves fighting for a wild card spot, now down two games to the division leading Saints. Trailing the entire game this weekend, the Falcons were never able to take a firm grasp of the game and comeback against a hurt Texans team. The Falcons are still a heavy favorite to clinch a wild card spot, but will have keep pace with the Bears, Lions and several others if they hope to secure one. Next Week: at Panthers.

15. Chicago Bears                 Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 12
Things keep getting worse for the Chicago Bears whose mid-season surge has come to a screeching halt. Jay Cutler is out and now the Bears only offensive weapon in Matt Forte is down and out for two to six weeks. The Bears were once thinking playoffs and are still in heat of things, but plagued by injuries could have this once promising team miss the postseason. Next Week: at Broncos.

16. Detroit Lions                    Record: 7-5                 Rank Last Week: 13
The Lions had the hot hand to start the season, but have gone on a cold streak, losing five of their last seven. Detroit is still hopeful for the playoffs, but will need to shake off their losing streak and find new ways to win. Matthew Stafford had another four hundred yard passing day, but then again, this isn’t the only thing that will contribute to wins. These last four games will test this team in more ways than one. Next Week: vs. Vikings.

17. Arizona Cardinals           Record: 5-7                 Rank Last Week: 18
Kevin Kolb returned to the Cardinals this week and helped them inch closer in the playoff hunt with a huge overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals appeared defeated when Dan Bailey made the game winning kick, but Dallas coach Jason Garrett kept their hopes alive by calling timeout at the last second. Kolb hit LaRod Stephens-Howling for a fifty-two yard touchdown to secure the overtime win. The season isn’t over just yet for this team, if they keep winning who knows what might happen. Next Week: vs. 49ers.

18. Seattle Seahawks             Record: 5-7                 Rank Last Week: 22
In an effort to save their season, the Seattle Seahawks ran all over the reeling Eagles to give them a fighting chance in the playoff hunt. Marshawn Lynch was great, rushing for a hundred forty eight yards and a couple of first half touchdowns. This was the Seahawks third win in four games and now they hold on for dear life in the playoff hunt. It may be too late for the Seahawks this year, but all aside they ruined the Eagles chances of a hopeful comeback and winning season. Next Week: vs. Rams. (MNF)

19. New York Giants                        Record: 6-6                 Rank Last Week: 17
So close yet so far as the New York Giants gave the Green Bay Packers a run for their money, but were unable to stop the hot hand of Aaron Rodgers in the waning seconds of the game. With their fourth loss in a row, the Giants are now on the edge of missing the playoffs. With a loss by Dallas this weekend, it certainly helped their chances, but now more than ever the Giants will have to break this losing streak if they want to see snow fall in January. Next Week: at Cowboys.

20. San Diego Chargers        Record: 5-7                 Rank Last Week: 24
Where in the world did this come from? Monday night’s game for the Chargers saw them as a rejuvenated bunch, outperforming and outscoring the Jaguars by a big margin. If San Diego played like this all season, their record would be much improved. Phillip Rivers was excellent probably playing his best game all year, considering his passing numbers haven’t been so hot this season. With a six game losing streak finally coming to an end, the Chargers now prepare themselves for late season rally. Next Week: vs. Bills.

21. Kansas City Chiefs         Record: 5-7                 Rank Last Week: 27
The art of the Hail Mary paid off this weekend as quarterback Tyler Palko aired one out in the final seconds of the first half. Brain Urlacher deflected the ball into the waiting arms of Dexter McCluster. It was the only touchdown of the game as the Chiefs snap their losing streak. Chicago fans got a brief glimpse of former Bear Kyle Orton wearing Kansas City red, who was injured on his first play and didn’t return to action. There’s still hope for this Chiefs squad. Next Week: at Jets.

22. Miami Dolphins               Record: 4-8                 Rank Last Week: 25
The Fins have been on a late season surge winning four of their last five games. It makes you wonder whether or not if the Dolphins had started out this way, how their season would have differed. Matt Moore was pretty good, but it was Reggie Bush who ran for over a hundred yards against the Raiders. This once woeful team is still continuing to impress. The playoffs may be out of reach at this point, but that doesn’t mean the Fins can’t keep swimming strong. Next Week: vs. Eagles.

23. Carolina Panthers           Record: 4-8                 Rank Last Week: 28
Cam Newton had a field day this weekend against Tampa Bay, rushing for three touchdowns to set the NFL single season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Carolina has already doubled the amount of wins from a year ago and Cam Newton looks to be the savior of the Panthers franchise. With a few more years under his belt, the Panthers could be elite team once again. Next Week: vs. Falcons.

24. Washington Redskins     Record: 4-8                 Rank Last Week: 19
Losing seven out of their last eight, the Washington Redskins have not been the same team since the first two weeks of the season. In last place in the NFC East, their season is all but over and Mike Shanahan is reeling for answers. There was a chance this weekend for a big win, but the Skins led the Jets over-power them in the fourth quarter to let victory slip away. It’s been another disappointing season for Washington. It will be interesting to see what this team does come the off-season. Next Week: vs. Patriots.

25. Buffalo Bills                     Record: 5-7                 Rank Last Week: 20
This team has seen their season slide into the ground week after week. Now, with the playoffs looming in the distance, the Bills are fighting for their life to stay alive. Five straight losses have sent this team from the top of the AFC East to third. It’s sad to see the wheels coming off this once thought to be dynamic squad. At least this week, Stevie Johnson kept his touchdown celebrations on the classier side. Poor Buffalo, they just can’t seem catch a break. Next Week: at Chargers.

26. Philadelphia Eagles         Record: 4-8                 Rank Last Week: 21
Another loss for the Eagles pits them with the Washington Redskins at the bottom of the NFC East. Vince Young started again for the Eagles with Vick being unable to play and performed lowly. He threw four interceptions, a career high for him, as the Eagles chances of securing a winning season went out the door. It’s hard to say what happened this year in Philly and as the drama mounts, so do the losses and the “boo-birds” from the stands. Next Week: at Dolphins

27. Cleveland Browns           Record: 4-8                 Rank Last Week: 23
Losing for the fifth time in six straight games, the Browns are hurting badly and now play on a shortened week on Thursday night football, against the Steelers nonetheless. Their season may be over and maybe it couldn’t have come at a better time considering the Browns are all banged-up. Let the re-building process continue. Next Week: at Steelers. (Thursday night)

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-8                 Rank Last Week: 26
After starting 3-1, the Buccaneers have struggled the rest of the season dropping their last six of seven games and are all but eliminated from playoff contention. Josh Freeman was out this weekend with an injury to his throwing shoulder, thus giving Josh Johnson an opportunity to play, one that didn’t pan out so well. Tampa Bay should be better than their record indicates, but this season hasn’t gone exactly to plan. Maybe next year, eh? Next Week: at Jaguars

29. Jacksonville Jaguars       Record: 3-9                 Rank Last Week: 29
Not a good outing for a team looking to keep their season under control. With the recent selling of the team and Jack Del Rio finally out the door, the Jags are looking to rebuild their broken franchise. Jacksonville suffered several miscues and a botched snap to put points on the board Monday night. Unfortunately the future regarding this team is still in question. With time will come answers, hopefully, cross your fingers Jags fans. Next Week: vs. Buccaneers.

30. Minnesota Vikings          Record: 2-10               Rank Last Week: 30
It was another crushing blow to the Vikings this week who fell into the double-digit loss category this season. Christian Ponder and his boys can’t catch a break considering he passed for three hundred eighty one yards, setting a Minnesota single game rookie record once held by the great Fran Tarkenton. It was a late interception thrown by Ponder that set-up the game winning score by the Broncos. The Vikings lose their fourth in a row and will now begin preparing for next season already. Next Week: vs. Lions.

No Sam Bradford again for St. Louis as A.J. Feely filled in for the injured starter. Feely struggled all afternoon and the Rams were not even noticeable in a game that didn’t mean that much to them to begin with. The Rams have been reeling the entire season and now look forward to having a high draft pick come April 2012. Next Week: at Seahawks. (MNF)

With four games remaining, the Colts are on the edge of a winless season. Quarterback Dan Orlovsky replaced Curtis Painter this week and gave the Colts a fighting chance against a dominant Patriots squad. A legendary comeback was in the making, but the Colts were too little too late in accomplishing the feat. The Colts must beat Baltimore, Tennessee, Houston or Jacksonville to avoid 0-16.
