Phil Clark

2011 Best and Worst Value: Tight Ends

Since the 2011 fantasy season ended, you’ve had a brief period to recharge. Yet many of you already want to start planning your 2012 drafts. This column will deliver the jump start that you need to begin that process.

We will examine TEs that provided the best and worst value for their owners. This will be based upon their numbers, and where they were drafted. We’ll utilize standard scoring of six points per TD, and one point per 10 rushing/receiving yards in a 12-team league.

BEST VALUE

Rob Gronkowski

The fact that Gronkowski delivered extraordinary numbers during the regular season is hardly bulletin material. But his accomplishments become even more remarkable, when you consider that he was still available in the eighth round, before becoming the ninth TE selected… just after Marcedes Lewis. He then proceeded to lead all TEs with 17 TD receptions, which also surpassed the total of all WRs. With the addition of his lone rushing TD, his total of 18 trailed only LeSean McCoy for second overall. He also led his position with 1,327 receiving yards, which was also sixth among all receivers. His 90 receptions were second among TEs, and fifth best overall. He also was easily within the top 20 in scoring in fantasy leagues, and the enormity of his production has helped redefine the value of elite TEs to owners. As a result, be prepared for him to be selected in round two of your next drafts.

Jimmy Graham

Jimmy Graham’s output was nearly the equal of Gronkowski’s, and its impact upon the degree to which fantasy owners will now utilize elite TEs in their draft strategy is enormous. He was originally the sixth TE chosen, with an ADP of 74. He rewarded those who entrusting him with a sixth round selection, by leading all Tight ends with 99 catches, which was also the NFL’s highest total behind only Wes Welker and Calvin Johnson. His 1,310 yards were seventh overall, and second among TEs. His 11 TDs were the fourth highest among all receivers, and 10th best overall. Without question, Jimmy Graham has vaulted into a tier with Gronkowski, that transcends all others at the position, and he will command at least a third round selection next summer.

Aaron Hernandez

If Hernandez happened to wear a different uniform, his 2011 accomplishments would be discussed even more extensively. Because even though teammate Gronkowski delivered an epic statistical explosion, Hernandez still managed to supply numbers that far exceeded his value. Fantasy owners made Hernandez just an 11th round pick, as 12 TEs were chosen before him. Yet, he generated the fourth highest yardage total at his position (910), and was tied for fourth with 79 receptions. Plus, he surpassed 100 yards in three games, averaged 65 YPG, and scored seven times. While Gronkowski will collect an enormous number of receptions again next season, Hernandez will produce sufficiently to merit selection as a top five TE.

Tony Gonzalez

Gonzalez assembled a decent 2010 season statistically, generating 70 catches for 656 yards, while scoring six times. But since those were the fewest number of receptions since 2002, and his lowest yardage total since 1998, many fantasy owners feared a continual decline in 2011. As a result, he was the 12th TE drafted, which was after Marcedes Lewis, Owen Daniels, and Kellen Winslow among others. Gonzalez repaid those who selected him by finishing third among all TEs with 80 receptions. Gonzalez also ranked fifth at his position with 875 yards, while generating seven TDs. Despite his 2011 success, both Roddy White and Julio Jones will commandeer a sizable percentage of targets again in 2012, and their collective presence will make it exceedingly difficult for Gonzalez to match his 2011 numbers.

Dustin Keller

He was not exactly garnering a considerable amount of attention heading into last summers’ drafts, after producing 815 yards on 65 receptions in 2010. And there were undoubtedly games during the 2011 regular season, in which fantasy owners weren’t exactly enamored with Keller’s production. But considering that he was just the 17th TE selected, he easily exceeded expectations. For the modest price of a 12th round draft pick, Keller rewarded those who chose him, by finishing sixth at his position with 815 yards, and ranking ninth in receptions with 65, while establishing new career highs in both categories. While it might be difficult for him to place at such a high level again next season, he can be employed as a 10th round selection, for those who choose not to utilize a lofty pick on their TE.

WORST VALUE

Jermichael Finley

His imposing physical ability, and the prolific nature of Green Bay’s offense, combined to make Finley a tremendously enticing choice on draft day. As a result, he became the second player at his position to be selected, as fantasy owners were willing to utilize a fourth round pick on the fourth-year TE. While he ultimately generated solid production overall, his numbers did not quite attain the level that one would prefer to see after making such a lofty investment. He did establish new highs in TDs (eight) and receiving yards (767), while also tying his career best with 55 catches. However, that reception total placed him just 14th among all TEs, while his total yardage ranked only 12th. Plus, three of his TDs were amassed in week 3 against Chicago, while he failed to reach the end zone in 11 other contests. While it is expected that he will return to Green Bay, considering the numerous options that Aaron Rodgers possesses, and the growing number of high quality TEs throughout the league, it is best to draft Finley no higher than the top eight at his position.

Dallas Clark

Although he missed 10 games in 2010 due to a torn ligament in his wrist, he appeared to be an excellent candidate for a massive resurgence in 2011. In fact, it was reasonable to anticipate numbers in the neighborhood of 2009, when he collected double digit TDs for the third time in his career, along with over 800 yards. Therefore, it made complete sense for fantasy owners to utilize a fifth round pick on Clark, which made him the fourth TE selected. However, what ensued was nothing short of disaster. Clark only amassed 352 yards, despite performing in 11 contests, which was just five more than he accumulated in six games during 2010. His two TDs were the fewest since his 2003 rookie year, and his 34 catches placed him 27th among TEs, and were the least since 2005. His value in 2012 is uncertain as of now, since his status with the Colts, as well as the identity of his QB, is unclear.

Marcedes Lewis

After finishing 2010 tied for the league lead among all TEs with a career best 10 TDs, Lewis appeared capable of performing as a No. 1. He became the eighth TE selected, with an ADP of 94, as Gronkowski, Gonzalez and Hernandez were among those still available. However, despite starting 15 games, his output declined significantly. Lewis ranked a disappointing 21st in receptions among all TEs with just 39. Plus, his paltry 460 yards also placed him 21st, and were the fewest since 2008. The worst news for those who drafted him, was that he failed to score for the first time in his six year career. If his 2011 numbers, and the reality that Blaine Gabbert will still be under center, do not provide sufficient reasons to look elsewhere for your next TE, the fact that new HC Mike Mularkey has called Lewis “perhaps the best blocking tight end in the NFL” should.

Owen Daniels

Despite the fact that Daniels had missed a total of 13 games in 2009-2010, fantasy owners displayed optimism, that he would experience a return to health, and high quality numbers in 2011. That image of an active Daniels collecting numerous passes from Matt Schaub, propelled him into becoming the seventh TE drafted, with an ADP of 74. Ultimately, he did in fact compete in 15 games. However, that makes the modest production that he attained even more disappointing, as he finished just 15th among TEs with both 54 receptions, and 677 receiving yards. While that enabled him to lead the Texans in both categories, his numbers were hardly a satisfactory reward for those who selected him. Even though Schaub was only able to perform in 10 contests, which impacted Daniels’ opportunities, he still, should not be among the top 10 TEs chosen next summer.

Zach Miller

Miller averaged 63 catches, 745 yards, and four TDs in 2009-2010, led the leading the Raiders in every major receiving category, and even garnered his first Pro Bowl selection in 2010. He then spurned a chance to resign with Oakland, in lieu of a more lucrative contract with Seattle. Since serious questions enveloped the QB position with his new team, fantasy owners were aware that his numbers could decline. He became the 14th TE selected, with an ADP of 130. But that modest investment was still far too hefty, as Miller’s output plummeted sizably with the Seahawks. Even though he participated in 15 games, he ranked a lowly 41st among all TEs in yardage with 233, and improved just slightly to 37th in receptions (25). Worse, he failed to find the end zone during the entire season. Unless a radical change occurs at the QB slot, Miller is not worth drafting.

Phil Clark

Best and Worst Fantasy Football Value: QB’s

Since the 2011 fantasy football season ended, you’ve had a brief period to recharge. Yet many of you already want to start planning your 2012 drafts. This column will deliver the jump start that you need to begin that process.

We will examine QBs that provided the best and worst value for their owners during the 2011 fantasy season. This will be determined by combining their final numbers, and their average draft position heading into the regular season. We’ll utilize standard scoring of six points per TD, one point per 20 passing yards, and one point per 10 rushing/receiving yards in a 12-team league.

BEST VALUE

Matthew Stafford

No player had the phrase “if he could just stay healthy” attached to his name with more frequency than Stafford entering the 2011 regular season. He had missed a whopping 19 games due to injury in his initial two seasons, which was the primary reason that he was just a seventh round draft pick, after 10 other QBs had been chosen. But he thoroughly rewarded those who selected him, by remaining in Detroit’s lineup for all 16 games, and leading the NFL with 663 passing attempts. He was one of just three signal callers to exceed 5,000 passing yards (5,038), which surpassed the totals of Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers. He also finished third with 41 TD passes. The fact that Calvin Johnson is his primary option remains an enormous plus, and he should be one of the first five QBs selected in 2012.

Eli Manning

Eli’s career averages of 3,335 yards, 22 TDs, and 16 Ints in seven seasons were respectable enough, but not necessarily exceptional. Which is why fantasy owners made him a seventh round selection, and chose him 13th among all QBs. However, he became a very sound investment by delivering his best season statistically. First, by establishing a new career high in passing yardage, by narrowly missing 5,000 yards. and finishing fourth among all QB in with 4,933. He also was sixth with 29 TDs, and only tossed 16 Ints, which was a sizable improvement from the 25 that he surrendered in 2010. He has surpassed 4,000 passing yards in three consecutive years, and possesses dynamic weapons at WR, that will help him exceed that number again next season.

Cam Newton

There were concerns about his accuracy. His pocket presence. Plus, his ability to move through progressions. And that doesn’t even include the “character issues” that were part of the prevailing concerns surrounding Newton before the season began. As a result, he was just an 11th round selection, as 26 signal callers were chosen before him. Including Kevin Kolb, and Matt Cassel. To say that he proved all doubters wrong would be a massive understatement. He threw for over 4,000 yards (4,051) which ranked him 10th overall, and he also finished 11th with 21 TD passes. He led all QBs with 706 rushing yards, which also placed him 26th overall. Probably his most impressive number would be his 14 rushing TDs, which were the NFL’s second highest, trailing only LeSean McCoy. He should be one of the top five QBs selected next summer. Simple as that.

Andy Dalton

He was chosen 25th among all QBs, as fellow rookies Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, and Jake Locker were on the list of signal callers who were drafted ahead of him. But he ascended beyond them with his production, while starting all 16 regular season contests, and leading the Bengals to the post-season. Dalton finished 13th with 20 TD passes, and 16th with 3,398 yards. He also completed 58% of his passes, while averaging 6.6 YPA. Dalton has the luxury of utilizing A.J. Green as his primary target, and you should see improvement in his numbers and his draft position next season.

Tim Tebow

You may be among those who have passed the point of overload regarding Tebow discussions. But for our purposes, he should be recognized as a productive fantasy QB, whose numbers far exceeded those of a 15th round draft choice. Yes, his 45.6 completion % is a concern. And 2,180 passing yards, with 12 TDs and six Ints do not compare favorably with the numbers of the NFL’s elite passers. But in 11 starts, Tebow averaged 47.1 YPG as a rusher, ran for at least 50 yards seven times, and exceeded 60 in five contests. His 660 yards placed him 28th overall for the year, and third among QBs. Plus, six of his rushes resulted in TDs. Let others debate the degree of his skill level, and simply focus on this: if he is allowed the opportunity to start for the Broncos, he will be a steady point producer for your teams.

WORST VALUE

Michael Vick

His amazing renaissance season of 2010 season included a surplus of impressive numbers that were assembled in just 12 games. He passed for over 3,000 yards (3,018) and a career high 21 TDs while throwing just six Ints. Plus, he ran for nine additional scores, while helping many owners to fantasy championships. As a result, he was the second QB selected in the majority of drafts, with a 9.5 ADP. But he failed to replicate those numbers in 2011, as he threw for fewer TDs (18) in 13 contests, while his Ints increased substantially (14). Worse, he managed just one rushing TD. His output was a massive disappointment for those who invested their critical first round pick on the 11th-year signal caller, and he should slide to the third round of your next drafts.

Josh Freeman

Fantasy owners were sufficiently impressed with Freeman’s 2010 numbers – 25 TDs, 3,451 yards, and just six Ints, to invest in the hope of continual improvement during 2011. He became the 12th signal caller selected, ahead of Eli Manning, and Cam Newton among others. While he finished 13th in passing yardage with 3,592, he was just 18th in TD passes, as his total plummeted to 16. And his Ints increased astronomically to 22, which was the NFL’s second highest total. He would benefit greatly by an infusion of talent at WR, but even if that occurs, you should proceed with caution on draft day.

Kevin Kolb

The Cardinals were convinced that Kolb would thrive in their offensive system, and rewarded him with a $65 million contract. A reasonable percentage of analysts concurred that he would be highly productive, since he was joining an Arizona offense that was conducive to his skills. Plus, he would possess an elite target in (then) four–time Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald. Fantasy owners subsequently chose Kolb 16th among all QBs, in hopes that he would achieve the 20+ TD season that some were projecting. Instead, he was alarmingly ineffective while in the lineup, generating just 1,955 yards, nine TDs, and eight Ints. Toe, foot, and concussion issues also reduced his season to nine games, and he was outperformed by John Skelton. After two consecutive seasons of optimistic forecasts, followed only by an enormous letdown, Kolb should not be among your draft options in 2012.

Sam Bradford

After a commendable rookie season in which he passed for 3,512 yards, and 18 TDs, while connecting on 60% of his passes, many owners believed that he had ascended into a tier that also comprised Eli, Matt Ryan, Matt Schaub, Ben Roethlisberger, and Joe Flacco. Some of them exercised patience, then utilized a seventh round pick to select him, with hopes that he would deliver highly productive numbers. But the 14th QB selected was a victim of numerous shortcomings that engulfed the Rams, and finished just 27th with 2,164 passing yards. He also generated only six TDs, while tossing six Ints. Unfortunately, the only category in which he was among the league leaders was in sacks, where he tied for sixth with 36 despite being in the lineup for only 10 games. His numbers should improve next season, although expectations should remain tempered.

Historic Lambeau Field plays host to the divisional match-up this weekend between the New York Football Giants and the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. Previously meeting in week 13 in the Meadowlands, the Packers narrowly escaped with a victory, as Aaron Rodgers led the potent offense down the field in less than two minutes to help seal a three-point victory. Could this time around be different? Do the Giants hold a grudge? Are they seeking revenge? All these things will be resolved come Sunday.

Four years ago, these two empowered teams met in the NFC Championship with a trip to Super Bowl XLII on the line. Eli Manning marched his troops into swirling winds and negative temperatures at Lambeau Field to take on Brett Favre (his final game as a Packer) and the Green and Gold. The game ended in a 23-20 victory for New York who eventually went on to surprise the undefeated Patriots. Both of these teams have storied histories and have something to prove this Sunday. The Giants are looking for revenge from earlier this season while Aaron Rodgers and company look to spoil a surprising New York Giants playoff run. It’s going to be a Giant battle at the Frozen Tundra.

Green Bay’s Ball Control and Defensive Pressure

With a remarkable 15-1 season under their belts, the Packers are poised to make history again by heading back to the Super Bowl. Securing home field advantage throughout the playoffs has seeded the Packers at number one as they look to take down a rising Giants team. The Packers have been unstoppable this season, with the exception of a skid in Kansas City, and have easily defeated teams that have thrown everything their way. If Green Bay doesn’t want to be disappointed by a solid New York squad, they’ll have to have eyes in the back of their heads if they hope to make another run at the Lombardi Trophy.

The Packers go into Sunday’s game unscathed by injuries, with key players such as Charles Woodson, Greg Jennings, Brian Bulaga, Randall Cobb, and James Starks listed as probable. This may benefit a Green Bay team that was seriously hindered by injuries a year ago, giving them a bit of an advantage. The biggest player to watch for the Packers is undoubtedly the stellar quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The front-runner in line for MVP of the league this year has passed for 45 touchdowns, throwing only six interceptions, and tossing 4,643 yards. A 68.3 percentage completion (second highest in the league) has translated into a passer rating of 122.5. The numbers don’t lie and if Rodgers passes like he has all season, he should have no problem going up against the tough Giants defense. Problems can arise however, if Rodgers can avoid the Giants defensive pressure.

You could make an argument that the Giants have the best defense left in the playoffs because of the way they beat up on the Falcons, which brings me to a key match-up to be aware of in Chad Clifton versus Jason Pierre- Paul. Clifton returns after a sustained injury and is now pitted against one of the NFL’s best pass rushers. Getting pressure on Rodgers will slow him down and Jason Pierre-Paul is the prime candidate for the job. He recorded 16.5 sacks in just his second season in the NFL, and will give the Giants a fighting chance in stopping the aggressive Packers offense. Nonetheless, Aaron Rodgers is lethal outside of the pocket, so the Giants may need to think about other ways of putting pressure on Rodgers. Protecting Aaron Rodgers will be one of the biggest keys to victory for the Packers.

For the defense, they will need to put pressure on Eli Manning. Manning is a poised pocket thrower, but getting him out in the open may give the Packers some opportunities for a turnover. Defensive pressure isn’t something the Packers are known for, but with this being the playoffs, they’ll need to learn how to get to Eli Manning and throw him off his rhythm.

The Packers have such a potent wide-receiving corps that is hard to contain. With this match-up the Giants are likely to bring the heat more often than not. This pressure will make short passes and slant routes (a Packers specialty) more likely options. The guy to watch on the Packers offense will be tight-end Jermichael Finley. In his previous match-up with the Giants, Finley shined with six receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown. His biggest catch came on a 24 yard toss on the game winning drive that gave the Pack the W. Finley will be a key player in the Packers success come Sunday.

Ball control will be key if the Packers hope to overcome the Giants. Like I mentioned previously, the Packers have a dangerous receiving corps, but ball control issues may rear their ugly heads. The Packers receivers can be notorious for dropping passes. This cannot happen especially in a playoff game. Green Bay needs to emphasize the implications of having “butter fingers” and prevent those types of mistakes from occurring. It’s truly simple…catch the ball.

Overall, the Packers are favored to win in the re-match. They’re 15-1, have a solid offense, and they’re at Lambeau Field, all advantages the Packers could use. Yet, the Packers defense is something to worry about considering they’re ranked in the bottom three on pass defense this year. The secondary will have their work cut out for them if they hope to contain New York wide-outs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. The defense is notorious for giving up lots of yards, but in their defense (no pun intended) they specifically play for the interception, resulting in more yards for the opposition. We’ll see how well the Packers perform in a game that feels all too familiar.

New York’s Defense and Deep Threats

The New York Giants made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth this year, hosting a home playoff game for the first time in roughly a decade. After a slow start, the Giants rolled on all cylinders, stuffing the Atlanta Falcons run game and essentially holding Matt Ryan in check. Now, the Giants go on the road to one of football’s most historic stadiums in Lambeau Field to play the Packers, a re-match they’ve been dying for since week 13.

This game is a chance for the New York Giants to put a devastating hurt on a promising Packers season. Some unforgettable memories may loom large in this match-up, but some keys for the Giants are going to be slowing down Aaron Rodgers and the Packers aerial attack. The first time around the Giants used an array of defensive schemes that had Rodgers a little out of sorts early on, they may be able to fool him again, but the Giants will need to pepper in zone disguises and other confusing concepts in the backfield.

The Giants defense looks revitalized, especially up-front with dangerous man Jason Pierre-Paul leading the way. In their last meeting, the Giants dominated the line of scrimmage and only finished the game with two sacks on Rodgers. This time around, the Giants are going to need to find an alternate way of putting pressure on Rodgers, since Rodgers is so athletic and has no problem throwing the ball on the run. The Giants defensive line has seen a resurgence this year, especially now with Osi Umenyiora returning to the line-up. Umenyiora was absent during the week 13 match-up and essentially will help Justin Tuck and Jason Pierre-Paul put the heavy pressure on the Packers. Pressuring Rodgers may be harder than one might think, but it is something New York is seriously going to have to consider if they wish to stop the explosive GB offense.

Eli Manning and the offense needs to step up in a big way come Sunday, especially when they need to move the ball downfield. Manning is a solid passer against the blitz, which undoubtedly the Packers will use often, so look for Manning to throw for plenty of passing yards. However, he will need to be aware of some tricky defensive schemes the Packers so often like to use, such as blitzing linebacker Clay Matthews while using cornerback Charles Woodson as a decoy rusher. The Packers defense usually tries for the interception, so if Manning can read this well, consider him to have 300 or more yards through the air.

The ground game is going to be vital for the Giants. Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs may have been waved off a few weeks ago, but now the Giants have a legit rushing attack and have rediscovered how to avoid tackles. This could benefit them in the long run, especially if they control the clock.

The deep threats of Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks will be vital for a victory as well. The Packers secondary is shaky and if Manning has enough time, will find these two guys wide open down the field for easy scores. The long ball may prove worthy if the Giants utilize it well. We’ll see what transpires come Sunday.

Who Wins?

This is going to be a closer game than one might expect, but with the Packers back at full-strength and playing at home, the “Cheeseheads” look like to be in a good position to host the NFC title game. They’ve taken care of business all season long and aren’t about to let the happy go lucky G-men come in and ruin such a promising season.

Although the Giants have found their groove again in the running game and the passing game, not to mention coming close to defeating the Pack back in week 13, they may fall just shy up upsetting the former Super Bowl Champs.

Mike Rodriguez

10 Amazing NFL Draft Steals, Starting in the Playoffs

In a perfect world every team’s top NFL Draft picks would get ten out out ten grades and be leaders in the playoffs for years to come. But everyone knows quality talent can slip through the cracks to the second or third day at the NFL draft. While sometimes a player is the product of the right system, late round gem’s do pass by teams in need, while the hype of first round talent is statistically never as great in hindsight. The best scouts do get their guy, some chalking it up to great scouting, others to luck, with costly busts not talked about around the local area.

The following is a look at players that are not only starters in this year’s NFL playoff run, but are difference makers for their respected teams.

10. QB T.J Yates- Texans
5th round selection (152nd overall) of the 2011 Draft

Yates did not exactly earn his way into a starting role, more like he earned the right to keep it from a default of options. Injuries to Quarterback’s Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart opened the door for the underrated play of 5th round draft pick T.J Yates from North Carolina.

Some may argue that Yates is this years “Rex Grossman” or “Trent Dilfer” of the playoffs, a manage the game-QB, yet I tend to disagree. Already added to the record books for the first QB to win a Texans Playoff game, T.J Yates is gaining the confidence from the team and fans with every passing down. He is looking better than expected and in my opinion has great prowess and determination, something that is needed to become a leader at the QB position.

Things will be interesting next year once Schuab becomes the starter again, with a lack of NFL talent at the QB position around the league, a phone call or two could be made in acquiring this new fan favorite Texan.

9. DE Justin Tuck- Giants
3rd round selection (74th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft

The Giants have a nose for finding excellent pass rushers and Justin Tuck might have been one of their better late round picks. The 2005 draft class overall grade for defensive ends wasn’t projected to be anything special, still names like Marcus Spears, Luis Castillo and Shaun Cody did all get extra attention early on. The Giants were patient and stole Tuck in the 3rd round. For the last 7 years Tuck has been a wrecking havoc on QB’s as he has cracked the double digit sack total 3 times (10,12,12) and been a vocal leader amongst his team

8. RB Frank Gore- 49er’s
3rd round selection (65th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft

I tried to find a player from each team in the 2011-12 playoffs, and sadly could only pull Frank Gore out of the bag for San Fran. The 49er’s are currently a team made up of 1st round talent and don’t seem to make the most out of the middle to late rounds. Still, Frank Gore is definitely a sleeper gem that 49er fans can be happy with, he is no doubt deserving of being on this list.

Frank Gore has been able to reach the 1000 yard mark in all but two of his 7 NFL seasons. This Sunday’s post-season game is a first for Frank Gore, along with many 49er’s as the team hasn’t made the playoffs since 02

7. DE Elvis Dumervil- Broncos
4th round selection (126th overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft

At 5 feet 11 inches tall many NFL scouts had their doubts about this 2006 4th round pick defensive end. Yet after an amazing 07-08 season with 12 sacks and a interception, Elvis Dumervil was thought as the one of leagues best steals of the ’06 draft. In 2009 defensive coordinator Mike Nolan moved Dumervil to outside linebacker in his 3-4 defensive scheme, but keeping him as a defensive end on 4-3 passing down situations. The result was Dumervil leading the league in sacks with 17.

6. TE Jimmy Graham- Saints
3rd round selection (95th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft

Someone somewhere needs to make a movie about this guy, Jimmy Graham is a great NFL story. Not only is Graham a lethal redzone threat he looks to take over the fantasy world for years to come.

Check out a great read by very own Ahmed Helmy called: Jimmy Graham: Fantasy Man-Crush

5. RB James Starks- Packers
6th round selection (193rd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft

Starks found himself the lead RB playoff starter for the Packers Super Bowl run last season. His solid performance and above average stat’s has lead him to a split RB starting roll for this 2011 season. Starks was a massive steal in the 6th round of the 2010 draft, a player that some believe was a lifesaver at many points throughout the Packers dominance over the past 2 years. Definitely a diamond in the rough find

4. DE Brett Keisel- Steelers
7th round selection (242nd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft

The Steelers were eliminated from the playoffs in an upset Wildcard weekend, but that won’t stop me from adding one of the greatest all-time steals in NFL draft history. Brett Keisel was taken in the 7th round of the 2002 NFL draft and has made the Steelers what they are today. Keisel has been an anchor for the Steelers defensive line and compiled 200 tackles over the last 10 years

3. RB Ahmad Bradshaw- Giants
7th round selection (250th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft

A Tiki Barber replacement that seems to get better with every year. Bradshaw has been practicing just once per week since returning from his foot injury in Week 13, yet his value to the team is unspeakable. Bradshaw and Jacobs work so much better when they are both healthy and active. One of the reasons why the Giants don’t want to let this RB go. As a pure value pick 250th overall Ahmad Bradshaw makes the NFL Draft Steal list for playoff teams in 2012.

2. WR Marques Colston- Saints
7th round selection (252nd overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft

How in the hell did 31 teams pass on this guy? Was their zero scouting done for Hofstra. Back in 2006, following the trade of wide receiver Donte Stallworth, Colston was inserted into the starting lineup for week 1 of the season. He becoame one of the few seventh round picks to ever to start week 1 for their team and has never looked back.

1. QB Tom Brady- Patriots
6th round selection (199th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft

Of course it’s Tom Brady! who else could be added to a list of amazing NFL draft steals. The New England Patriots made the unusual decision to carry four quarterbacks on the roster back in 2000. Brady started the season as the fourth string quarterback, behind starter Drew Bledsoe and backups John Friesz and Michael Bishop; by the end of the season, Brady was number two on the depth chart behind Bledsoe. During his rookie season, he was 1-of-3 passing, for six yards.

Tom Brady holds numerous regular season and postseason records, including: most touchdown passes in a regular season (50); most consecutive regular-season home wins (31); highest winning percentage of any quarterback during his first 100 starts (76 wins); most completions in one Super Bowl (32); and the list goes on for days.

Brady is the fourth-fastest player to reach 200 career passing touchdowns (116 games) and he is the first quarterback in NFL history to have reached this mark with fewer than 100 career interceptions (88 interceptions)

Without a doubt Tom Brady was the greatest NFL Draft steal of all time.

The point spread for this up coming NFL playoff weekend is massive, and something I want nothing to do with. Either the oddsmakers are using the same computer that brought us a terrible BCS championship game or someone has been drinking the kool aid. Clearly the Tebow magic can keep things closer than 14 points and as the Texans and Giants a few of our pick’em experts think they make for decent upset picks on the road.

NFL Playoff Preview:

Who’s Got Enough to Win the Super Bowl?

It’s time to break down the NFL playoff teams and discuss what will be their route toward victory or what will ultimately be their downfall. Some might seem obvious, others maybe not so much, but here is NFL Playoff Rundown to each team that could make a run toward the Lombardi trophy.

AFC

New England

They win because . . . Tom Brady stays healthy and the passing game stays as lethal as it has been for the entire season. No team – maybe in the history of the league – utilizes the tight end better than the Patriots have this season and you still have Wes Welker to worry about.

They lose because . . . The defense stinks. True they have not given up as many points as some other teams, but offenses have gone up and down the field on them all season. If they get into a game where Brady and company are slowed down even a little, they could be in for a short playoff run.

Baltimore

They win because . . . They are allowed to play Ravens football. Although the defense doesn’t get the headlines of a few years ago, it is still pretty good. Like third in the league good. That Ray Rice guy is pretty good too. They have tried to even things out the last few years, but this team is still built on defense and running the ball. They are allowed to do that, they win.

They lose because . . . They have to play out of character. If they have to play from behind or if they turn the ball over they will have to put the game on Joe Flacco’s shoulders. Flacco has gotten better every year, but the Ravens lose when Rice is not the most effective offensive player on the Ravens. Take the running game out of the offense and the Ravens fall.

Houston

They win because . . . They play like the Ravens. They play great defense and pound with the running game. The Texans have the best one two running back duo in the league and a defense that ranks second in the league in yards allowed.

They lose because . . . They get poor quarterback play. Week 17 Yates was hurt early, nothing serious, but enough to force the Texans to insert Jake Delhomme into the game. Either it’ll be lack of experience from Yates or lack of ability from Delhomme, one way or another this team has a weak link.

Denver

They win because . . . They play outstanding defense and the opponent’s offense doesn’t show up. If they have great games running the ball, and the defense plays like it has most of the season, they’ll have a chance.

They lose because . . . Not to state the obvious, but because of the caliber of quarterback. Tim Tebow has been a great story and John Fox should win Coach of the Year for how he was able to get this team to the playoffs, but this offense can’t score enough points to succeed in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh

They win because . . . Their defense dominates the way it can and Big Ben is healthy enough to be effective. They have been solid throwing the ball all season.

They lose because . . . They can’t stay healthy on offense. The running game is going to take a step back with the loss of Rashard Mendenhall. The passing game could be fragile as well with as beat up Roethlisberger has been – one big hit and the offense is crippled.

Cincinnati

They win because . . . I hate to sound like a broken record, but they win if their defense can keep them in the game. The Bengal defense has played well all year. If they can keep them in the game and allow the offense to run the ball and take some pressure off rookie Andy Dalton, they can advance.

They lose because . . . They fall behind or turn the ball over. As much praise as Dalton and fellow rookie A.J. Green have deservedly received this year, the fact is outside of Denver they have the least effective offense in the AFC field. This offense is not ready to consistently comeback against top teams.

NFC

Green Bay

They win because . . . The offense keeps humming right along. For my money Aaron Rodgers has had the best season of any quarterback this year. Most years that would be a no brainer, but a couple other guys have had ridiculous years too. That being said the Packers offense has been slowed down once this whole year, I don’t see it happening a second time.

They lose because . . . Before the Lions’ game I was going to say if Rodgers goes down, but Matt Flynn made me put that logic to bed. The real reason the Pack lose is the defense. There has been many games that have proved that there are holes against explosive offensive opponents.

San Francisco

They win because . . . The defense continues to dominate and Alex Smith continues to play within himself. Smith has made great strides this year, but if he tries to do too much, or if the defense slips up just a little, the offenses in this field will kill you.

They lose because . . . The offense can’t control the clock with the running game and the defense is not dominating. A team like the 49ers needs to play solid in all phases. Even a sub-par special teams game will doom the team by the Bay.

New Orleans

They win because . . . Not to state the obvious, but they simply out score you. If Drew Brees is allowed to pick apart even a top defense he will. They have shown this season that they have no remorse and will pound you into submission if you can’t stop them.

They lose because . . . The offense can’t keep up its pace. Weather could be a big factor for the Saints. They will have to go into possibly windy San Francisco and then potentially cold and snowy Green Bay. If they can deal with the elements, The Saints could end up in the Super Bowl.

New York

They win because . . . Eli Manning continues to play at a high level. The defense has played well for stretches this season. The running game has had its moments, but the whole team has been inconsistent this year. The one steadying factor has been Manning.

They lose because . . . The defense can’t do enough to keep them in the game. Manning has brought his team back in the fourth quarter a lot this year, but that won’t last long in the playoffs, especially on the road where they will have to play the majority of their games.

Atlanta

They win because . . . They realize they need to rely on Matt Ryan and the passing game to support, not supersede Michael Turner and the running game. While improved, the passing game can’t keep up with the other offenses in this field. The Falcon defense certainly can’t.

They lose because . . . They can’t keep the scoreboard under control. They might not have the offense to win a shoot out against the Giants, much less the Saints or Packers. They fall behind and are forced to abandon the running game, they are in trouble.

Detroit

They win because . . . Their young stars play like it’s a regular season game with the pressure of winning it all. If Matthew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh and the rest of the young Lions stay poised, they have the talent to win a few games in the playoffs.

They lose because . . . They show their immaturity. This team is not beyond shooting itself in the foot with stupid penalties. They are a quickly rising team in the NFC, but they are a few pieces away if they don’t control themselves. If they eliminate the stupid penalties they have the talent to hang with anyone in this field.

Mike Rodriguez

Fantasy Playoff Sleepers Week 15

Making a fantasy football sleeper prediction in the summer or throughout the regular season really doesn’t come with too many consequences. A fantasy guru can simply shrug his shoulders, say “My Bad” and move on with his day. Yet when it comes to the fantasy playoffs, owners have a lot more at stake. After my Thursday night prediction article: RB Workhorses on a Short Week where I was near bang on with the results of Michael Turner and Jones Drew, I figured I’d take the bullet for the team and take a look at some brewing sleepers for this very important upcoming fantasy week.

So what is a playoff sleeper? I’m mean really…it’s week 15. There are no surprises at this point, you know who’s who and are not likely to start someone you haven’t gone with before. Yet, the game-plan for NFL teams is changing based on the standings in the league. Injury concerns for NFL clubs heading into the post-season are a critical decision that could even cost someone a coaching job if they’re not careful. Half-games of the leagues best performers wreck our chances at fantasy victory thanks to the undecided nature of a coaches mindset. Kevin Roberts kicked off our week with a rundown of who may be likely to be rested week 15, but nothing is set in stone until that 4th quarter rolls around.

My Fantasy advice for this week is to start guys that look to play even 3 quarters at the most, don’t over think it. I would much rather have Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees for some of a game than Dan Orlovsky for all four quarters. Remember for teams like Green Bay, that have a shot at greatness, all it takes is a Kansas City spoiler alert for Rodgers to stick around. Fans of fantasy players on teams like Green Bay and New Orleans should almost hope for their opponent to take early leads in the game. I’m guessing if the score was 23-21 in the fourth quarter of the Packers/Chiefs game, Rodgers would stick it out to guarantee the win.

Nevertheless, here are a few Fantasy Playoff sleepers that either have a great match-up or are on teams that could see more opportunities from a starter being rested:

10. WR Demaryius Thomas

Tebow had a favorite target in Eric Decker, but has all of a sudden found new love in throwing to Demaryius Thomas. The 4th quarter miracle is unlikely to happen again against a tough disciplined Patriots group, so Tebow and company will need to keep the game close for all 4 quarters. Denver can’t afford to wait it out in a 10-0 game. The Broncos are aware of the secondary trouble for the Patriots and should be able to only use the read-option offense sporadically on Sunday. Tebow could look more like an NFL quarterback than ever if the play calling is smart. The shotgun formation that features the fake-step-foward dance move after the snap, should bite many defenders into giving up some even softer pass coverage. I expect to see Demaryius Thomas on the receiving end of at least 1 score and around 70 yards.

9. RB Ryan Grant
I have been answering a lot of questions on twitter lately about the possibility that Ryan Grant repeats his stellar performance from last week. It’s likely that the Packers could blow the doors off the Kansas City Chiefs early and use the running game to close it out. It is also possible that Grant sees 12 carries and spoils your week. Personally I would bump him up just a little in our Fantasy RB rankings, he should get you 60-70 yards with a possible TD.

8. WR Pierre Garcon
The Colts are terrible, but Garcon is having a pretty solid season considering. Indy is never leading in a game and will always be throwing. In PPR leagues Garcon is a decent 3rd WR.

7. TE Aaron Hernandez
At what point does a defense devote their entire attention to Rob Gronkowski? I mean, c’mon, the guy is breaking records and is the first look of Tom Brady’s every pass. Defenses should blanket him as much as possible while sending heat in Tom “Anger Management‘s” face. When they do, Hernandez should be a great target to slip into the open. I feel confident that Hernandez sees 60 yards and a Touchdown Sunday.

6. TE Brent Celek
If you were the Jets defensive coaching staff, how would you defend the explosive nature of the Eagles offense? Well if it was me, I would put Maclin on Revis Island, Cromartie on DeSean with safety help over the top, and blitz Mike Vick to force him to roll to his right. To counteract this defensive approach is a quick pass up the seam to a trusted possession target. Celek is your guy, he could crack 100 yards and have 6-7 receptions for you PPR owners.

5. New York Giants Defense
Not much of a sleeper as they are coming off a great win on the road in Dallas. But did you the Redskins are expected to start undrafted rookie Willie Smith at left tackle in Sunday’s game against the Giants? They’ll have Tyler Polumbus at right tackle against a fearsome Giants pass rush. Meanwhile, Jason Pierre-Paul is likely to bolster his Defensive Player of the Year resume on Sunday as he blasts past Willie Smith. Link: Rotoworld

4. WR James Jones
Very high risk start, and I would only recommend him if you hate your fantasy match-ups. The simple logic here is that the depth chart WR’s all take a step up the ladder with Greg Jennings out. Like I said it’s high risk, but he could have a monster game.

3. WR Plaxico Burress
Who knows the Eagles better than a guy who got more boo’s than Terrell Owens in that Stadium. Plaxico was the heartburn that boiled in the bellies of the Eagles faithful for years. He was a constant threat and a player who spoiled many Eagle secondaries. It’s been a while, but he knows and performs well in Philadelphia.

2. QB Andy Dalton
Odd’s are all the remaining fantasy owners are stacked with the very best at the Quarterback position. If you have someone how made it with a rotation of (bums) tier 2-3 players, I suggest checking out our QB Fantasy Rankings.

Dalton should be able to put up 300 yards and a couple scores against the Rams, who are fresh off a butt-kicking on a short week.

1. RB Ben Tate
When will the Texans pull Arian Foster from the game? Even if it resulted in a loss, I’m sure the Houston area wouldn’t care knowing he’d be healthy for the playoffs. With everyone from Mario Williams to Wade Phillips getting hurt on this team, the Texans have defied all odds in 2011. They are truly an elite AFC team, and have turned a franchise corner as a future team to beat. The Texans have just clinched their first trip to the post-season and the fans are going to be losing their minds when that is announced to them this Sunday. The Panthers are about to face a team that is running on pure adrenaline and excitement. It will be loud and crazy (by the way, a must start Fantasy Defense) and this game could get out of reach early. If that is the case, Ben Tate could see a heavy dose of the carries come the second half. In PPR leagues Tate holds extra value as he can be used in screens or dump offs that can add bonus points. I do expect him wanting to prove to the coaches that last weeks goal-line fumble was just a fluke, and that he is worthy of carries in the post season.

Gridiron Experts
Kevin Roberts

Fantasy Match-ups with 4th quarter Back-ups

The Green Bay Packers are 13-0 and for the moment chasing perfection. But a loss or another Greg Jennings-style injury could force Mike McCarthy and co. to be conservative down the stretch and rest their top starters.

While that would only make sense for a team built to make a deep playoff run this year, that golden logic is still a thorn in your fantasy football team’s side. Or at least it might be.

Call me crazy, but I believe Clay Matthews, Aaron Rodgers, Charles Woodson, and Mike McCarthy when they allude to “going for” perfection. The Packers clearly have winning a Super Bowl at the top of their “to do” list, but this is not a team that is about to shy away from greatness that comes across a team so rarely.

Green Bay has nothing left to play for except perfection for the final three weeks, but if they start sitting guys now, they risk being rusty when the games actually count. Look for them to go for 16-0, but once/if they do lose their first game of the year, bank on them sitting their starters immediately after.

As for the other potential NFL playoff teams out there, here’s a quick look and a verdict:

New England Patriots (10-3)

Even though Wes Welker went down two years ago, you know Bill Belichick doesn’t sit his guys. Besides, with three other 10-3 teams, you know the Patriots are going to play all the way through until the regular season is over.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3)

As soon as the division is wrapped up/decided, you can start banking on the Steelers resting some of their guys. The main one is Ben Roethlisberger, who has an ankle injury and is questionable for week 15.

Baltimore Ravens (10-3)

Same deal here, as the Ravens are likely to rest Ray Rice down the stretch, as soon as their division is decided. If so, Ricky Williams should be the cow bell and could be a worth-while add for a fantasy playoff run.

Houston Texans (10-3)

This is the team I’m most worried about in the AFC. They’ve clinched their division and a playoff spot, and they’ve experienced enough injuries throughout the year to make you think they’ll rest most of their guys. Andre Johnson is a risky play for the next three weeks, while Arian Foster should be seeing a lighter load with each passing week to end the regular season.

New Orleans Saints (10-3)

I’m not overly worried about the Saints resting their guys. They’ll probably keep Mark Ingram off the field as much as possible, but Drew Brees is going for Dan Marinos’ yardage record, and I don’t see Sean Payton keeping him from getting it. Besides, the Saints haven’t clinched the NFC South yet, so they have good reason to keep their starters in.

San Francisco 49ers (10-3)

The 49ers are riding a two-game losing streak and it could become three against the Steelers in week 15. They may want to go out on a high note in the final two weeks if they lose again. However, they’ve already locked down their division, so I’d expect them to take it easy on a less than 100% Frank Gore.

All other teams not mentioned have seeding, their division, or a playoff spot in general to fight for, so it would make no sense for their teams to sit their top players. The key is to stray away from playoff-bound fantasy options that are not 100% healthy. If their teams know they’re in the big dance, they’ll be less likely to force them onto the field.

Chris Strong

NFL Power Rankings Week 14

The first two teams have booked their tickets to the playoffs and have won their respective divisions with now time being of the essence for the remaining division leaders and wild card contenders to push for those few spots that still exist. It was a fantastic weekend of football. No doubt about it.

America’s game of the week put the Packers perfect season on the line, as they narrowly escaped with a victory, while Tim Tebow and the Broncos managed to pull out another come from behind victory. Oh, and lets not forget Jason Garrett’s questionable coaching decision that cost the Cowboys the game against the Cardinals.

It’s crunch time in the NFL as the playoffs inch closer and closer. December could be the month to remember or one to forget depending on your allegiances because now it’s an epic battle to the end of the season. With that…

Lets glance at the Power Rankings heading into Week 14. Shall we?

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 12-0 Rank Last Week: 1
An unbelievable season was put to the test again this weekend against a Giants squad desperately searching for a win. The Packers were able to win on a last second field goal from the leg of Mason Crosby, keeping a perfect season in tact and officially clinching the NFC North division. Aaron Rodgers thrived under pressure leading a last minute drive to set up the game winning field goal. Nothing changes from the previous week, as Green Bay still remains the team to take down. Next Week: vs. Raiders.

2. Baltimore Ravens Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 2
Inching closer to the AFC North division title, the Ravens put a hurting on an ailing Browns team that had running back Ray Rice run for a career day of 204 rushing yards. Joe Flacco didn’t necessarily throw the ball well, but with 290 yards on the ground and a Lardarius Webb punt return for a touchdown, the Ravens were able to easily take care of business. Baltimore looks ready for the playoffs. Next Week: vs. Colts.

3. New Orleans Saints Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 3
The explosive Saints continue to put on a show, as Drew Brees made passing history, passing for over 4,031 yards on the season, the first NFL quarterback to eclipse the 4,000 yard mark in twelve games. The Saints remain undefeated at home this season and look set for an epic playoff run. If they continue to pour on the points, the Saints could be unstoppable come January. The only question that remains is who is willing to stop them? Next Week: at Titans.

4. New England Patriots Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 4
The Patriots improve to 9-3, winning their fourth straight game, holding off a late rally from the winless Indianapolis Colts. Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to tight end Rob Gronkowski and withstood an onside kick attempt that could have given the Colts a chance to win the game. The Patriots look set to win the AFC East, now vying for home field advantage in the playoffs. With that said, New England will need to win out for the rest of the season. Next Week: at Redskins.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 5
Nipping at the Ravens heels, the Steelers are looking for a prime wild card spot. They once again took care of business against division rival Cincinnati this week. It wasn’t even a contest as Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdowns and the game was pretty much sealed by the half. The AFC North is still up for grabs, with Baltimore holding a slim advantage. Now the Steelers will be hoping the Ravens take a late season dive, thrusting them to the top of the division. Next Week: vs. Browns. (Thursday night)

6. San Francisco 49ers Record: 10-2 Rank Last Week: 6
The second team to record double digit victories this season has also clinched the NFC West division, cementing their spot in the playoffs. The Niners looked sharp against an ailing Rams team, shutting them out 26-0. Now, Mr. Jim Harbaugh, only the third rookie coach in NFL history to win the division, has to plan for the postseason. It should be interesting to see what he comes up with. Next Week: at Cardinals.

7. Houston Texans Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 7
T.J. time in Houston paid off with a big win for the Texans, as they were able to hold off a fighting Atlanta Falcons squad. Given the Texans are riddled with injuries, they are still finding ways to win. With their sixth win in a row, the Texans are looking good to wrap up the AFC South and third string quarterback T.J. Yates is performing quite well considering the circumstances. He threw his first NFL touchdown this weekend, but Houston suffered another big loss in receiver Andre Johnson, injuring his left hamstring. This team could on its way to making their first playoff appearance in franchise history. Next Week: at Bengals.

8. Denver Broncos Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 14
With such a pathetic start, one would have pinned the Broncos to be in last place this season, but a huge resurgence has them in a tie atop the AFC West with the Raiders. Tim Tebow and company did it again this weekend, completing another come from behind victory to make Tebow 6-1 as the Broncos starter. Will this ride throughout the rest of season and possibly the playoffs? Who knows, but doubters are now turning to believers in this magical mystery team and Tim Tebow continues to improve from game to game. Next Week: vs. Bears.

9. Tennessee Titans Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 15
Hallelujah! Chris Johnson is slowly and surely returning to form, rushing for a hundred fifty three yards this week against Buffalo. With this win, the Titans have quietly entered into the wild card race. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for Tennessee who is looking to stride past the Jets, Bengals, and even the Raiders for one of two coveted spots. Matt Hasselbeck has the experience to possibly get this team further than all might have thought this season. We’ll see if the Titans have the fight in them the remainder of the season. Next Week: vs. Saints.

10. New York Jets Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 16
Gang Green was able to slide past the Redskins in a fourth quarter rally to improve to 7-5, giving them a better chance to contend for a wild card spot. Although their game over the weekend was less than stellar considering the Jets only produced a hundred sixty total yards after three quarters. It was Shonn Greene’s big running day that helped the Jets overcome the struggling Skins. Nonetheless, Rex Ryan still believes his team will be in the Super Bowl. We’ll see come February. Next Week: vs. Chiefs.

11. Dallas Cowboys Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 8
With the best intentions at heart, head coach Jason Garrett rightfully cost his team the game this weekend in Arizona. Calling a timeout right before Dallas kicker Dan Bailey kicked it through the up-rights iced him long enough so his second kick wasn’t even close. Arizona forced overtime and came up big as Kevin Kolb dumped a short pass to LaRod Stephens-Howling who zigzagged fifty-two yards for the game winning score. Dallas’ winning streak was cut short, but nonetheless they are still in a good position to win the NFC East. Next Week: vs. Giants.

12. Oakland Raiders Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 9
Oakland had a chance to take over first place in the division but stumbled against the resilient Miami Dolphins. Carson Palmer had a decent day passing, but the Dolphins surged out of the gate and took care of business at home. The Raiders are in a good position to either win the AFC West or grab a remaining wild card slot. However, Oakland needs to keep winning and make sure that Tebow and the Broncos don’t surpass them. Next week: at Packers.

13. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 10
The Bengals just couldn’t overcome a sleuth of turnovers and mishaps that had them eliminated from winning the AFC North this weekend. Still vying and in the running for a wild card spot, the Bengals will have to play much better if they expect to go beyond the regular season and eliminate many of the gaffes they had on Sunday. Sunday’s game was a big eye opener for this squad who now know what kinds of threats that may lie ahead come postseason time. Next Week: vs. Texans.

14. Atlanta Falcons Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 11
A team that was sporadic on offense for most of the day now find themselves fighting for a wild card spot, now down two games to the division leading Saints. Trailing the entire game this weekend, the Falcons were never able to take a firm grasp of the game and comeback against a hurt Texans team. The Falcons are still a heavy favorite to clinch a wild card spot, but will have keep pace with the Bears, Lions and several others if they hope to secure one. Next Week: at Panthers.

15. Chicago Bears Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 12
Things keep getting worse for the Chicago Bears whose mid-season surge has come to a screeching halt. Jay Cutler is out and now the Bears only offensive weapon in Matt Forte is down and out for two to six weeks. The Bears were once thinking playoffs and are still in heat of things, but plagued by injuries could have this once promising team miss the postseason. Next Week: at Broncos.

16. Detroit Lions Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 13
The Lions had the hot hand to start the season, but have gone on a cold streak, losing five of their last seven. Detroit is still hopeful for the playoffs, but will need to shake off their losing streak and find new ways to win. Matthew Stafford had another four hundred yard passing day, but then again, this isn’t the only thing that will contribute to wins. These last four games will test this team in more ways than one. Next Week: vs. Vikings.

17. Arizona Cardinals Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 18
Kevin Kolb returned to the Cardinals this week and helped them inch closer in the playoff hunt with a huge overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals appeared defeated when Dan Bailey made the game winning kick, but Dallas coach Jason Garrett kept their hopes alive by calling timeout at the last second. Kolb hit LaRod Stephens-Howling for a fifty-two yard touchdown to secure the overtime win. The season isn’t over just yet for this team, if they keep winning who knows what might happen. Next Week: vs. 49ers.

18. Seattle Seahawks Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 22
In an effort to save their season, the Seattle Seahawks ran all over the reeling Eagles to give them a fighting chance in the playoff hunt. Marshawn Lynch was great, rushing for a hundred forty eight yards and a couple of first half touchdowns. This was the Seahawks third win in four games and now they hold on for dear life in the playoff hunt. It may be too late for the Seahawks this year, but all aside they ruined the Eagles chances of a hopeful comeback and winning season. Next Week: vs. Rams. (MNF)

19. New York Giants Record: 6-6 Rank Last Week: 17
So close yet so far as the New York Giants gave the Green Bay Packers a run for their money, but were unable to stop the hot hand of Aaron Rodgers in the waning seconds of the game. With their fourth loss in a row, the Giants are now on the edge of missing the playoffs. With a loss by Dallas this weekend, it certainly helped their chances, but now more than ever the Giants will have to break this losing streak if they want to see snow fall in January. Next Week: at Cowboys.

20. San Diego Chargers Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 24
Where in the world did this come from? Monday night’s game for the Chargers saw them as a rejuvenated bunch, outperforming and outscoring the Jaguars by a big margin. If San Diego played like this all season, their record would be much improved. Phillip Rivers was excellent probably playing his best game all year, considering his passing numbers haven’t been so hot this season. With a six game losing streak finally coming to an end, the Chargers now prepare themselves for late season rally. Next Week: vs. Bills.

21. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 27
The art of the Hail Mary paid off this weekend as quarterback Tyler Palko aired one out in the final seconds of the first half. Brain Urlacher deflected the ball into the waiting arms of Dexter McCluster. It was the only touchdown of the game as the Chiefs snap their losing streak. Chicago fans got a brief glimpse of former Bear Kyle Orton wearing Kansas City red, who was injured on his first play and didn’t return to action. There’s still hope for this Chiefs squad. Next Week: at Jets.

22. Miami Dolphins Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 25
The Fins have been on a late season surge winning four of their last five games. It makes you wonder whether or not if the Dolphins had started out this way, how their season would have differed. Matt Moore was pretty good, but it was Reggie Bush who ran for over a hundred yards against the Raiders. This once woeful team is still continuing to impress. The playoffs may be out of reach at this point, but that doesn’t mean the Fins can’t keep swimming strong. Next Week: vs. Eagles.

23. Carolina Panthers Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 28
Cam Newton had a field day this weekend against Tampa Bay, rushing for three touchdowns to set the NFL single season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Carolina has already doubled the amount of wins from a year ago and Cam Newton looks to be the savior of the Panthers franchise. With a few more years under his belt, the Panthers could be elite team once again. Next Week: vs. Falcons.

24. Washington Redskins Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 19
Losing seven out of their last eight, the Washington Redskins have not been the same team since the first two weeks of the season. In last place in the NFC East, their season is all but over and Mike Shanahan is reeling for answers. There was a chance this weekend for a big win, but the Skins led the Jets over-power them in the fourth quarter to let victory slip away. It’s been another disappointing season for Washington. It will be interesting to see what this team does come the off-season. Next Week: vs. Patriots.

25. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 20
This team has seen their season slide into the ground week after week. Now, with the playoffs looming in the distance, the Bills are fighting for their life to stay alive. Five straight losses have sent this team from the top of the AFC East to third. It’s sad to see the wheels coming off this once thought to be dynamic squad. At least this week, Stevie Johnson kept his touchdown celebrations on the classier side. Poor Buffalo, they just can’t seem catch a break. Next Week: at Chargers.

26. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 21
Another loss for the Eagles pits them with the Washington Redskins at the bottom of the NFC East. Vince Young started again for the Eagles with Vick being unable to play and performed lowly. He threw four interceptions, a career high for him, as the Eagles chances of securing a winning season went out the door. It’s hard to say what happened this year in Philly and as the drama mounts, so do the losses and the “boo-birds” from the stands. Next Week: at Dolphins

27. Cleveland Browns Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 23
Losing for the fifth time in six straight games, the Browns are hurting badly and now play on a shortened week on Thursday night football, against the Steelers nonetheless. Their season may be over and maybe it couldn’t have come at a better time considering the Browns are all banged-up. Let the re-building process continue. Next Week: at Steelers. (Thursday night)

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 26
After starting 3-1, the Buccaneers have struggled the rest of the season dropping their last six of seven games and are all but eliminated from playoff contention. Josh Freeman was out this weekend with an injury to his throwing shoulder, thus giving Josh Johnson an opportunity to play, one that didn’t pan out so well. Tampa Bay should be better than their record indicates, but this season hasn’t gone exactly to plan. Maybe next year, eh? Next Week: at Jaguars

29. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-9 Rank Last Week: 29
Not a good outing for a team looking to keep their season under control. With the recent selling of the team and Jack Del Rio finally out the door, the Jags are looking to rebuild their broken franchise. Jacksonville suffered several miscues and a botched snap to put points on the board Monday night. Unfortunately the future regarding this team is still in question. With time will come answers, hopefully, cross your fingers Jags fans. Next Week: vs. Buccaneers.

30. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-10 Rank Last Week: 30
It was another crushing blow to the Vikings this week who fell into the double-digit loss category this season. Christian Ponder and his boys can’t catch a break considering he passed for three hundred eighty one yards, setting a Minnesota single game rookie record once held by the great Fran Tarkenton. It was a late interception thrown by Ponder that set-up the game winning score by the Broncos. The Vikings lose their fourth in a row and will now begin preparing for next season already. Next Week: vs. Lions.

31. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-10 Rank Last Week: 31
No Sam Bradford again for St. Louis as A.J. Feely filled in for the injured starter. Feely struggled all afternoon and the Rams were not even noticeable in a game that didn’t mean that much to them to begin with. The Rams have been reeling the entire season and now look forward to having a high draft pick come April 2012. Next Week: at Seahawks. (MNF)

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-12 Rank Last Week: 32
With four games remaining, the Colts are on the edge of a winless season. Quarterback Dan Orlovsky replaced Curtis Painter this week and gave the Colts a fighting chance against a dominant Patriots squad. A legendary comeback was in the making, but the Colts were too little too late in accomplishing the feat. The Colts must beat Baltimore, Tennessee, Houston or Jacksonville to avoid 0-16. Next Week: at Ravens
