Phil Clark

Best and Worst Fantasy Football Value: QB’s

Since the 2011 fantasy football season ended, you’ve had a brief period to recharge. Yet many of you already want to start planning your 2012 drafts. This column will deliver the jump start that you need to begin that process.

We will examine QBs that provided the best and worst value for their owners during the 2011 fantasy season. This will be determined by combining their final numbers, and their average draft position heading into the regular season. We’ll utilize standard scoring of six points per TD, one point per 20 passing yards, and one point per 10 rushing/receiving yards in a 12-team league.

BEST VALUE

Matthew Stafford

No player had the phrase “if he could just stay healthy” attached to his name with more frequency than Stafford entering the 2011 regular season. He had missed a whopping 19 games due to injury in his initial two seasons, which was the primary reason that he was just a seventh round draft pick, after 10 other QBs had been chosen. But he thoroughly rewarded those who selected him, by remaining in Detroit’s lineup for all 16 games, and leading the NFL with 663 passing attempts. He was one of just three signal callers to exceed 5,000 passing yards (5,038), which surpassed the totals of Aaron Rodgers and Philip Rivers. He also finished third with 41 TD passes. The fact that Calvin Johnson is his primary option remains an enormous plus, and he should be one of the first five QBs selected in 2012.

Eli Manning

Eli’s career averages of 3,335 yards, 22 TDs, and 16 Ints in seven seasons were respectable enough, but not necessarily exceptional. Which is why fantasy owners made him a seventh round selection, and chose him 13th among all QBs. However, he became a very sound investment by delivering his best season statistically. First, by establishing a new career high in passing yardage, by narrowly missing 5,000 yards. and finishing fourth among all QB in with 4,933. He also was sixth with 29 TDs, and only tossed 16 Ints, which was a sizable improvement from the 25 that he surrendered in 2010. He has surpassed 4,000 passing yards in three consecutive years, and possesses dynamic weapons at WR, that will help him exceed that number again next season.

Cam Newton

There were concerns about his accuracy. His pocket presence. Plus, his ability to move through progressions. And that doesn’t even include the “character issues” that were part of the prevailing concerns surrounding Newton before the season began. As a result, he was just an 11th round selection, as 26 signal callers were chosen before him. Including Kevin Kolb, and Matt Cassel. To say that he proved all doubters wrong would be a massive understatement. He threw for over 4,000 yards (4,051) which ranked him 10th overall, and he also finished 11th with 21 TD passes. He led all QBs with 706 rushing yards, which also placed him 26th overall. Probably his most impressive number would be his 14 rushing TDs, which were the NFL’s second highest, trailing only LeSean McCoy. He should be one of the top five QBs selected next summer. Simple as that.

Andy Dalton

He was chosen 25th among all QBs, as fellow rookies Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert, and Jake Locker were on the list of signal callers who were drafted ahead of him. But he ascended beyond them with his production, while starting all 16 regular season contests, and leading the Bengals to the post-season. Dalton finished 13th with 20 TD passes, and 16th with 3,398 yards. He also completed 58% of his passes, while averaging 6.6 YPA. Dalton has the luxury of utilizing A.J. Green as his primary target, and you should see improvement in his numbers and his draft position next season.

Tim Tebow

You may be among those who have passed the point of overload regarding Tebow discussions. But for our purposes, he should be recognized as a productive fantasy QB, whose numbers far exceeded those of a 15th round draft choice. Yes, his 45.6 completion % is a concern. And 2,180 passing yards, with 12 TDs and six Ints do not compare favorably with the numbers of the NFL’s elite passers. But in 11 starts, Tebow averaged 47.1 YPG as a rusher, ran for at least 50 yards seven times, and exceeded 60 in five contests. His 660 yards placed him 28th overall for the year, and third among QBs. Plus, six of his rushes resulted in TDs. Let others debate the degree of his skill level, and simply focus on this: if he is allowed the opportunity to start for the Broncos, he will be a steady point producer for your teams.

WORST VALUE

Michael Vick

His amazing renaissance season of 2010 season included a surplus of impressive numbers that were assembled in just 12 games. He passed for over 3,000 yards (3,018) and a career high 21 TDs while throwing just six Ints. Plus, he ran for nine additional scores, while helping many owners to fantasy championships. As a result, he was the second QB selected in the majority of drafts, with a 9.5 ADP. But he failed to replicate those numbers in 2011, as he threw for fewer TDs (18) in 13 contests, while his Ints increased substantially (14). Worse, he managed just one rushing TD. His output was a massive disappointment for those who invested their critical first round pick on the 11th-year signal caller, and he should slide to the third round of your next drafts.

Josh Freeman

Fantasy owners were sufficiently impressed with Freeman’s 2010 numbers – 25 TDs, 3,451 yards, and just six Ints, to invest in the hope of continual improvement during 2011. He became the 12th signal caller selected, ahead of Eli Manning, and Cam Newton among others. While he finished 13th in passing yardage with 3,592, he was just 18th in TD passes, as his total plummeted to 16. And his Ints increased astronomically to 22, which was the NFL’s second highest total. He would benefit greatly by an infusion of talent at WR, but even if that occurs, you should proceed with caution on draft day.

Kevin Kolb

The Cardinals were convinced that Kolb would thrive in their offensive system, and rewarded him with a $65 million contract. A reasonable percentage of analysts concurred that he would be highly productive, since he was joining an Arizona offense that was conducive to his skills. Plus, he would possess an elite target in (then) four–time Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald. Fantasy owners subsequently chose Kolb 16th among all QBs, in hopes that he would achieve the 20+ TD season that some were projecting. Instead, he was alarmingly ineffective while in the lineup, generating just 1,955 yards, nine TDs, and eight Ints. Toe, foot, and concussion issues also reduced his season to nine games, and he was outperformed by John Skelton. After two consecutive seasons of optimistic forecasts, followed only by an enormous letdown, Kolb should not be among your draft options in 2012.

Sam Bradford

After a commendable rookie season in which he passed for 3,512 yards, and 18 TDs, while connecting on 60% of his passes, many owners believed that he had ascended into a tier that also comprised Eli, Matt Ryan, Matt Schaub, Ben Roethlisberger, and Joe Flacco. Some of them exercised patience, then utilized a seventh round pick to select him, with hopes that he would deliver highly productive numbers. But the 14th QB selected was a victim of numerous shortcomings that engulfed the Rams, and finished just 27th with 2,164 passing yards. He also generated only six TDs, while tossing six Ints. Unfortunately, the only category in which he was among the league leaders was in sacks, where he tied for sixth with 36 despite being in the lineup for only 10 games. His numbers should improve next season, although expectations should remain tempered.

Chris Strong

“Lions, Saints, Superdome, Oh My!”

Wild card weekend is upon us as two premiere NFC elites, the feisty Detroit Lions and the dominant New Orleans Saints prepare to do battle on Saturday night to stay alive in the hunt for the coveted Super Bowl game in Indianapolis. In a game that promises to be spectacular, the Lions are looking to make the most of their first playoff appearance in twelve years while the Saints look to captivate Mardi Gras town once again. It’s gut-check time for both of these squads looking to prove something. Prepare yourself for the Lions and the Saints in the Superdome, a battle royale, oh my.

With a previous week 13 match-up under their belts, where the Saints came out on top, this re-match of epic proportions spells out revenge for the Lions and dominance for the Saints. With that, in order to secure a W this weekend, let’s preview the first NFC wild card game of the weekend and see if the Lions have enough roar in them to keep up with the Super Saints.

Detroit’s decisiveness with the ball.

The visiting Detroit Lions are definitely viewed as the underdogs going into a tough re-match against a Saints team that easily defeated the heavily penalized Lions in round one. The Saints haven’t withered in domed arenas this season as they look to continue their winning ways. Nonetheless, the Lions have had a rejuvenated year with a healthy and agile Matthew Stafford, a dangerous and dynamic Calvin Johnson and a no- nonsense Ndamukong Suh. Detroit has been granted access into the playoffs for the first time in twelve years, giving the Motor City something to rejoice, at least for the time being. It will be Detroit’s decisiveness with the football that will help them prevail in this game.

This season the Lions finished fourth in the league in scoring (29.6 points per game) and quarterback Matthew Stafford had a career year tossing forty-one touchdowns and passing for 5,038 yards. Calvin Johnson was re-introduced as a top five receiver in the NFL and the Lions passing attack has turned into a relentless assault that has become hard to stop. Look for the Lions on Saturday to continue to use Stafford’s arm to move the ball on offense, utilizing the deep threats of Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson, and even Brandon Pettigrew.

The Lions have come up woefully short in a number of big games this season and now more than ever will need to close that gap if they hope to beat New Orleans. Detroit is 1-5 against teams in the playoffs and 0-5 against teams with winning records this year. The Lions are a solid, young football team on the rise, but stupidity and overconfidence have been huge contributing factors as to why the Lions have suffered some of their losses. The number of penalties per game Detroit racks up is astronomical, while too many Detroit players get too frustrated and emotional during contests that lead to mistakes. The Lions end up shooting themselves in the foot at crucial times and that has cost them several important games.

If the Lions are expected to beat New Orleans, they need to eliminate the penalties, play tighter on defense, especially with Suh back in the line-up, who was absent for their previous match-up, while managing the clock will play an important role in keeping Drew Brees and the Saints offense off the field.

Ndamukong Suh is going to be a key player in the Lions defense in stopping the Saints offense. The Lions defense, especially Suh, will need to put as much pressure on Brees as possible, forcing him out of the pocket. Forcing Brees to throw on the run will help the Lions tremendously. Another key will be Matthew Stafford against the Saints secondary, with the possibility of Stafford having a field day throwing the football. The Saints defense ranks 30th against the pass, and given time, Stafford will be able to carve up the secondary. Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer will need to play lights out defense if they hope to contain Calvin Johnson.

Overall, the Lions have the ingredients that make up a solid football team (young gunslinger, top receiver, solid defense) but still have a few inconsistencies to work out if they expect to make a playoff run. We’ll see what transpires on Saturday night.

The Saints reign supreme on offense.

The New Orleans Saints have seen a rise in their game as the 2011 season has progressed, keeping them in the back of everyone’s mind. A powerhouse of a football team, the Saints host the Lions in the Mercedes Benz Superdome, a place the Saints haven’t lost in all season. Drew Brees has had a record setting season, eclipsing the all time passing yards in a single season mark, once held by the great Dan Marino, passing for 5,476 yards. His aggressive offense has contributed to many of the Saints wins this season, a gun-ho style of game play. Surrounding Brees is a plethora of football talent including rookie rusher Mark Ingram, lethal tight end Jimmy Graham, and quite possibly the best off-season acquisition in Darren Sproles, who each contribute to the success of the team. Stopping the offensive attack of New Orleans may prove difficult for the Lions because the Saints reign supreme offensively.

The Saints have had yet another fantastic season under the guise of Sean Payton, a 13-3 squad humbled by an early season loss to the St. Louis Rams, now finding that 2011 could be a repeat of 2009. With their Super Bowl title, string of postseason appearances and high potent, explosive offense, the Saints are slowly pushing out the bad memories of a once thought lowly franchise. This wild card game against the Lions will help secure the promise that the Saints are the NFC team to beat.

On Saturday night, the Saints will need to keep Matthew Stafford in check if they want to win. We cannot emphasize how awesome the offense is, but truly the defense will need to step up if they hope to stop the Lions aerial assault. What will be key for the Saints will be the rushing attack of Mark Ingram, Darren Sproles and Pierre Thomas against Detroit’s run defense. The Lions were able to hold off Ingram and Sproles in week 13, giving the Lions a fighting chance in the game; nonetheless, Drew Brees cannot do all the work himself. The rushing attack needs to step up in a big way to penetrate the Detroit defense if they don’t want to be surprised by the Lions D-line.

Drew Brees is extremely vital for New Orleans in this game and will likely go down in history as one of the NFL’s best, but now the playoffs have arrived and we start from scratch. The record setting year means nothing now and Brees doesn’t want to get a bad reputation of being a quarterback who can’t win when it matters most. If the Saints go down to the Lions, it would be an epic disappointment for having such an amazing year.

Overall, the Saints have an explosive team, as we watched them pick apart their opponents all year long. The Saints shouldn’t have a problem marching through the playoffs if they play like they have been. There may be a few kinks to work out, but New Orleans seems poised to make history again.

Who Wins?

This is undoubtedly going to be an offensive battle, with Stafford facing off against Brees. Both quarterbacks combined for 10,514 yards this year, each throwing for over forty touchdowns and were powerful contributors in getting their teams to this point. The game may be closer than people expect considering the pass deficiencies of the Saints, but watch out for Brees to put a damper on the Lions season, as he has been stellar all year and is not going to let such a flawed Lions team out perform his Saints. Detroit is still growing and has everything in place to become elite, but it seems like this game could be the end of the line for them in 2011.

Saints 35 Lions 24

NFL Playoff Preview:

Who’s Got Enough to Win the Super Bowl?

It’s time to break down the NFL playoff teams and discuss what will be their route toward victory or what will ultimately be their downfall. Some might seem obvious, others maybe not so much, but here is NFL Playoff Rundown to each team that could make a run toward the Lombardi trophy.

AFC

New England

They win because . . . Tom Brady stays healthy and the passing game stays as lethal as it has been for the entire season. No team – maybe in the history of the league – utilizes the tight end better than the Patriots have this season and you still have Wes Welker to worry about.

They lose because . . . The defense stinks. True they have not given up as many points as some other teams, but offenses have gone up and down the field on them all season. If they get into a game where Brady and company are slowed down even a little, they could be in for a short playoff run.

Baltimore

They win because . . . They are allowed to play Ravens football. Although the defense doesn’t get the headlines of a few years ago, it is still pretty good. Like third in the league good. That Ray Rice guy is pretty good too. They have tried to even things out the last few years, but this team is still built on defense and running the ball. They are allowed to do that, they win.

They lose because . . . They have to play out of character. If they have to play from behind or if they turn the ball over they will have to put the game on Joe Flacco’s shoulders. Flacco has gotten better every year, but the Ravens lose when Rice is not the most effective offensive player on the Ravens. Take the running game out of the offense and the Ravens fall.

Houston

They win because . . . They play like the Ravens. They play great defense and pound with the running game. The Texans have the best one two running back duo in the league and a defense that ranks second in the league in yards allowed.

They lose because . . . They get poor quarterback play. Week 17 Yates was hurt early, nothing serious, but enough to force the Texans to insert Jake Delhomme into the game. Either it’ll be lack of experience from Yates or lack of ability from Delhomme, one way or another this team has a weak link.

Denver

They win because . . . They play outstanding defense and the opponent’s offense doesn’t show up. If they have great games running the ball, and the defense plays like it has most of the season, they’ll have a chance.

They lose because . . . Not to state the obvious, but because of the caliber of quarterback. Tim Tebow has been a great story and John Fox should win Coach of the Year for how he was able to get this team to the playoffs, but this offense can’t score enough points to succeed in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh

They win because . . . Their defense dominates the way it can and Big Ben is healthy enough to be effective. They have been solid throwing the ball all season.

They lose because . . . They can’t stay healthy on offense. The running game is going to take a step back with the loss of Rashard Mendenhall. The passing game could be fragile as well with as beat up Roethlisberger has been – one big hit and the offense is crippled.

Cincinnati

They win because . . . I hate to sound like a broken record, but they win if their defense can keep them in the game. The Bengal defense has played well all year. If they can keep them in the game and allow the offense to run the ball and take some pressure off rookie Andy Dalton, they can advance.

They lose because . . . They fall behind or turn the ball over. As much praise as Dalton and fellow rookie A.J. Green have deservedly received this year, the fact is outside of Denver they have the least effective offense in the AFC field. This offense is not ready to consistently comeback against top teams.

NFC

Green Bay

They win because . . . The offense keeps humming right along. For my money Aaron Rodgers has had the best season of any quarterback this year. Most years that would be a no brainer, but a couple other guys have had ridiculous years too. That being said the Packers offense has been slowed down once this whole year, I don’t see it happening a second time.

They lose because . . . Before the Lions’ game I was going to say if Rodgers goes down, but Matt Flynn made me put that logic to bed. The real reason the Pack lose is the defense. There has been many games that have proved that there are holes against explosive offensive opponents.

San Francisco

They win because . . . The defense continues to dominate and Alex Smith continues to play within himself. Smith has made great strides this year, but if he tries to do too much, or if the defense slips up just a little, the offenses in this field will kill you.

They lose because . . . The offense can’t control the clock with the running game and the defense is not dominating. A team like the 49ers needs to play solid in all phases. Even a sub-par special teams game will doom the team by the Bay.

New Orleans

They win because . . . Not to state the obvious, but they simply out score you. If Drew Brees is allowed to pick apart even a top defense he will. They have shown this season that they have no remorse and will pound you into submission if you can’t stop them.

They lose because . . . The offense can’t keep up its pace. Weather could be a big factor for the Saints. They will have to go into possibly windy San Francisco and then potentially cold and snowy Green Bay. If they can deal with the elements, The Saints could end up in the Super Bowl.

New York

They win because . . . Eli Manning continues to play at a high level. The defense has played well for stretches this season. The running game has had its moments, but the whole team has been inconsistent this year. The one steadying factor has been Manning.

They lose because . . . The defense can’t do enough to keep them in the game. Manning has brought his team back in the fourth quarter a lot this year, but that won’t last long in the playoffs, especially on the road where they will have to play the majority of their games.

Atlanta

They win because . . . They realize they need to rely on Matt Ryan and the passing game to support, not supersede Michael Turner and the running game. While improved, the passing game can’t keep up with the other offenses in this field. The Falcon defense certainly can’t.

They lose because . . . They can’t keep the scoreboard under control. They might not have the offense to win a shoot out against the Giants, much less the Saints or Packers. They fall behind and are forced to abandon the running game, they are in trouble.

Detroit

They win because . . . Their young stars play like it’s a regular season game with the pressure of winning it all. If Matthew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh and the rest of the young Lions stay poised, they have the talent to win a few games in the playoffs.

They lose because . . . They show their immaturity. This team is not beyond shooting itself in the foot with stupid penalties. They are a quickly rising team in the NFC, but they are a few pieces away if they don’t control themselves. If they eliminate the stupid penalties they have the talent to hang with anyone in this field.

Justin Shenkel

A 2011 NFL “Year in Review”

So maybe you didn’t win your fantasy league. Maybe you didn’t even make it to the fantasy playoffs. Or perhaps you’re hoisting your invisible fantasy trophy over your head right now. Whatever the case, this was surely a season full of highlights, lowlights and anything & everything in between for the NFL.

Next year we’ve got some hot rookies looking to stay gold in their upcoming sophomore seasons. Andy Dalton, Tim Tebow and Cam Newton saw the most success among all rookie QB’s. While Dalton and Tebow have their teams poised to make a run at the playoffs, Cam and his Panthers will be watching the games from whichever couch they feel is best. Still, Newton has had a season that will go down as a great one for a rookie quarterback. He’s rushed for 14 touchdowns and thrown for 20 more. Not too shabby for a 22 year old Heisman winner from Georgia I’d say.

Some key season ending injuries were no doubt the cause of much frustration within the fantasy ranks this year. Early on, Jamaal Charles went out for the season against the Lions. This was a crushing blow not only to the Chiefs team, but to his fantasy owners that expected top notch numbers out of him this year. While the Chiefs have had many multi-faceted problems this season, the loss of Charles was definitely worth a mention as it took out their entire running game.

Darren McFadden has essentially missed the last 9 full games with an injury of his own. Although he hasn’t been put on injured reserve, he might as well have been, as his fantasy numbers went from stellar, to non-existent in his absence. This opened the door for Michael Bush to step up and have a solid season in place of McFadden. Those owners lucky enough to pick up Bush in place of McFadden weren’t totally devastated at the injury, but surely missed the excitement that Darren had to offer with his running style.

And then there’s the Colts playing their season without their perennial all-pro, Peyton Manning. To say it’s been disastrous would be an understatement, although the Colts have managed to string together a couple wins in a row. Some think this could potentially (with a capital P) save coach Jim Caldwell’s job. If they can pull off a victory in the final game of the season, Caldwell could have even more breathing room as it relates to his job, but surely won’t make any new Colt fans in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. The question then remains: if the number one pick in the draft is lost, would the two or three victories be worth it? Manning mentoring Luck probably wouldn’t be such a bad way to go. As history has shown, many of the QB greats have grown under the wings of superstar predecessors. But don’t pack your bags for Indianapolis just yet Mr. Luck, this game has a funny way of surprising us.

DeMarco Murray showed us all a reason to be legitimately excited about drafting him early next year. He lit up the Rams earlier this year for over 250 yards on 25 carries. Yeah, he soon became the Cowboys’ featured back for the rest of the season (until he got hurt of course). A solid runner, Murray gave Dallas plenty of optimism and reason to believe their running game can be a force to be reckoned with for some time to come.

I’m sure you know, but in case you live underneath a rock, Drew Brees just broke Dan Marino’s single season passing record of 5,084 passing yards set in 1984. Brees now has a total of 5,087 passing yards on the season, and if he plays in it, still has one game left to add on to that number. The record breaking game in New Orleans vs. the Atlanta Falcons was delayed for a few minutes while Brees and his team mates were allowed to relish in the historical moment. If you’re anything like me, you were thinking [finally a record broken without controversy by someone that doesn’t use performance enhancing drugs and that is actually likeable]. Apparently Marino himself is okay with his record falling to this particular player. Upon the record being broken, Marino is quoted as tweeting “great job by such a special player.” A humbled Brees later gave much credit to his team mates for accomplishing this feat. While addressing his team mates in the locker room after the game, Brees stated, “there may be only one name that goes into the record book, but it’s all about you guys.” If that’s not the definition of humility and class, then I don’t know what is. Congratulations Drew.

And in what is arguably the biggest story in the NFL this year, Tim Tebow has grabbed fans of this league by the collar and is staring intently into the eyes of his haters. You can dislike him all you want, plenty of people already do regardless of his performance. But one thing is certain: you can’t deny his dedication to winning or question his intensity. Tebow might be gaining publicity by treading in water that many choose to never disturb, but at the end of the day we’re still talking about him, and that’s the point. Publicity is publicity. Love him or hate him, the whole country is talking about him and that bodes all kinds of well for Mr. Tebow and his pocket book in the future. How’d you like to be his agent right now? In all seriousness, the bottom line here is clear, Denver owes a great deal of its success this season to that Tebow guy. And to briefly touch on the taboo-portion of this Tebow debate, the integrity of this league should never be compromised by one individual and his personal beliefs, regardless of our own thoughts about them. Tim Tebow is a good football player and that’s why we watch him.

That’s the bottom line. His religious faith has nothing to do with it. He can believe anything he wants, but it’s our responsibility to keep our focus and discussion about his on-field play, not his off-field beliefs. Now if Tebow can offer the same courtesy in return and when asked a football question, comeback with a football, not religious based answer, then all will be balanced in the equation. And besides, the guy isn’t deliberately offensive, nor is he breaking any league rules. He just chooses to very openly speak his mind about his faith. This may or may not turn out to be a problem for him, but that depends on his ability (or lackthereof) to constantly keep his word filter on full blast. Everyone knows that based on general respect for others, it’s an unspoken rule to only go so far with religious talks, especially when in the media spotlight like Tebow. I’ve yet to witness him crossing that line, and even if he tried to, rest assured the Bronco’s PR person would quickly remind him of that proverbial boundary. The fact remains, the Tebow story is an intriguing one by any definition, regardless of your take on the guy. He has become a favorite topic for media outlets, a conversation piece among friends and a surprising new addition to the list of “must watch players” in this league, and he’s done all this whether we like it or not. We have to at least respect that.

So, before the season started, what if someone had told you that the Chargers, Eagles, Colts and Bears would be eliminated from playoff contention, and the Jets, Giants and Cowboys are one week away from sharing the same fate? And what if they told you the Texans, Bengals, Broncos, Raiders and Lions were all either in the playoffs or one week away from getting there? And suppose they told you the 49ers would be nearing a 13 win, first round bye type of a season, would you have believed any of that? Well the time for believing is now.

Heading into the final week of the season, here are a couple of key games to watch as well as a full breakdown of all playoff scenarios:

Dallas Cowboys (8-7) @ New York Giants (8-7)
This is for all the marbles. Whichever team wins takes the reigns as champions of the NFC East. Both teams have had up and down seasons, with all the reason in the world to hold their heads up even if ousted from the post-season. The bright spots have outweighed the dark this season for these two teams, despite less success than originally predicted. And what’s more exciting than two division rivals duking it out for a playoff spot on the final game of the year? This is one you won’t want to miss!

Baltimore Ravens (11-4) @ Cincinnati Bengals (9-6)
If you’re Cincinnati it’s simple, win and you’re in. Baltimore on the other hand has a few scenarios that could play out for them. If they win and the Patriots lose, they’ve got the number one seed in the AFC and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. If they win and the Patriots win as well, they will secure the second seed and a bye in the first round. A Steelers loss will also clinch the division for them. This is a crucial game in determining many AFC post-season matchups.

Confused yet? Don’t worry, the playoff picture will come into focus after this weekend. Whether your team is still in the race or out of contention, we trust you will still be glued to your TV’s…there’s not much better than post-season football in the NFL.

Enjoy the games and have a safe and happy new year!

Chris Strong

NFL Power Rankings Week 14

The first two teams have booked their tickets to the playoffs and have won their respective divisions with now time being of the essence for the remaining division leaders and wild card contenders to push for those few spots that still exist. It was a fantastic weekend of football. No doubt about it.

America’s game of the week put the Packers perfect season on the line, as they narrowly escaped with a victory, while Tim Tebow and the Broncos managed to pull out another come from behind victory. Oh, and lets not forget Jason Garrett’s questionable coaching decision that cost the Cowboys the game against the Cardinals.

It’s crunch time in the NFL as the playoffs inch closer and closer. December could be the month to remember or one to forget depending on your allegiances because now it’s an epic battle to the end of the season. With that…

Lets glance at the Power Rankings heading into Week 14. Shall we?

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 12-0 Rank Last Week: 1
An unbelievable season was put to the test again this weekend against a Giants squad desperately searching for a win. The Packers were able to win on a last second field goal from the leg of Mason Crosby, keeping a perfect season in tact and officially clinching the NFC North division. Aaron Rodgers thrived under pressure leading a last minute drive to set up the game winning field goal. Nothing changes from the previous week, as Green Bay still remains the team to take down. Next Week: vs. Raiders.

2. Baltimore Ravens Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 2
Inching closer to the AFC North division title, the Ravens put a hurting on an ailing Browns team that had running back Ray Rice run for a career day of 204 rushing yards. Joe Flacco didn’t necessarily throw the ball well, but with 290 yards on the ground and a Lardarius Webb punt return for a touchdown, the Ravens were able to easily take care of business. Baltimore looks ready for the playoffs. Next Week: vs. Colts.

3. New Orleans Saints Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 3
The explosive Saints continue to put on a show, as Drew Brees made passing history, passing for over 4,031 yards on the season, the first NFL quarterback to eclipse the 4,000 yard mark in twelve games. The Saints remain undefeated at home this season and look set for an epic playoff run. If they continue to pour on the points, the Saints could be unstoppable come January. The only question that remains is who is willing to stop them? Next Week: at Titans.

4. New England Patriots Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 4
The Patriots improve to 9-3, winning their fourth straight game, holding off a late rally from the winless Indianapolis Colts. Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to tight end Rob Gronkowski and withstood an onside kick attempt that could have given the Colts a chance to win the game. The Patriots look set to win the AFC East, now vying for home field advantage in the playoffs. With that said, New England will need to win out for the rest of the season. Next Week: at Redskins.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 5
Nipping at the Ravens heels, the Steelers are looking for a prime wild card spot. They once again took care of business against division rival Cincinnati this week. It wasn’t even a contest as Ben Roethlisberger threw two touchdowns and the game was pretty much sealed by the half. The AFC North is still up for grabs, with Baltimore holding a slim advantage. Now the Steelers will be hoping the Ravens take a late season dive, thrusting them to the top of the division. Next Week: vs. Browns. (Thursday night)

6. San Francisco 49ers Record: 10-2 Rank Last Week: 6
The second team to record double digit victories this season has also clinched the NFC West division, cementing their spot in the playoffs. The Niners looked sharp against an ailing Rams team, shutting them out 26-0. Now, Mr. Jim Harbaugh, only the third rookie coach in NFL history to win the division, has to plan for the postseason. It should be interesting to see what he comes up with. Next Week: at Cardinals.

7. Houston Texans Record: 9-3 Rank Last Week: 7
T.J. time in Houston paid off with a big win for the Texans, as they were able to hold off a fighting Atlanta Falcons squad. Given the Texans are riddled with injuries, they are still finding ways to win. With their sixth win in a row, the Texans are looking good to wrap up the AFC South and third string quarterback T.J. Yates is performing quite well considering the circumstances. He threw his first NFL touchdown this weekend, but Houston suffered another big loss in receiver Andre Johnson, injuring his left hamstring. This team could on its way to making their first playoff appearance in franchise history. Next Week: at Bengals.

8. Denver Broncos Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 14
With such a pathetic start, one would have pinned the Broncos to be in last place this season, but a huge resurgence has them in a tie atop the AFC West with the Raiders. Tim Tebow and company did it again this weekend, completing another come from behind victory to make Tebow 6-1 as the Broncos starter. Will this ride throughout the rest of season and possibly the playoffs? Who knows, but doubters are now turning to believers in this magical mystery team and Tim Tebow continues to improve from game to game. Next Week: vs. Bears.

9. Tennessee Titans Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 15
Hallelujah! Chris Johnson is slowly and surely returning to form, rushing for a hundred fifty three yards this week against Buffalo. With this win, the Titans have quietly entered into the wild card race. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for Tennessee who is looking to stride past the Jets, Bengals, and even the Raiders for one of two coveted spots. Matt Hasselbeck has the experience to possibly get this team further than all might have thought this season. We’ll see if the Titans have the fight in them the remainder of the season. Next Week: vs. Saints.

10. New York Jets Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 16
Gang Green was able to slide past the Redskins in a fourth quarter rally to improve to 7-5, giving them a better chance to contend for a wild card spot. Although their game over the weekend was less than stellar considering the Jets only produced a hundred sixty total yards after three quarters. It was Shonn Greene’s big running day that helped the Jets overcome the struggling Skins. Nonetheless, Rex Ryan still believes his team will be in the Super Bowl. We’ll see come February. Next Week: vs. Chiefs.

11. Dallas Cowboys Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 8
With the best intentions at heart, head coach Jason Garrett rightfully cost his team the game this weekend in Arizona. Calling a timeout right before Dallas kicker Dan Bailey kicked it through the up-rights iced him long enough so his second kick wasn’t even close. Arizona forced overtime and came up big as Kevin Kolb dumped a short pass to LaRod Stephens-Howling who zigzagged fifty-two yards for the game winning score. Dallas’ winning streak was cut short, but nonetheless they are still in a good position to win the NFC East. Next Week: vs. Giants.

12. Oakland Raiders Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 9
Oakland had a chance to take over first place in the division but stumbled against the resilient Miami Dolphins. Carson Palmer had a decent day passing, but the Dolphins surged out of the gate and took care of business at home. The Raiders are in a good position to either win the AFC West or grab a remaining wild card slot. However, Oakland needs to keep winning and make sure that Tebow and the Broncos don’t surpass them. Next week: at Packers.

13. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 10
The Bengals just couldn’t overcome a sleuth of turnovers and mishaps that had them eliminated from winning the AFC North this weekend. Still vying and in the running for a wild card spot, the Bengals will have to play much better if they expect to go beyond the regular season and eliminate many of the gaffes they had on Sunday. Sunday’s game was a big eye opener for this squad who now know what kinds of threats that may lie ahead come postseason time. Next Week: vs. Texans.

14. Atlanta Falcons Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 11
A team that was sporadic on offense for most of the day now find themselves fighting for a wild card spot, now down two games to the division leading Saints. Trailing the entire game this weekend, the Falcons were never able to take a firm grasp of the game and comeback against a hurt Texans team. The Falcons are still a heavy favorite to clinch a wild card spot, but will have keep pace with the Bears, Lions and several others if they hope to secure one. Next Week: at Panthers.

15. Chicago Bears Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 12
Things keep getting worse for the Chicago Bears whose mid-season surge has come to a screeching halt. Jay Cutler is out and now the Bears only offensive weapon in Matt Forte is down and out for two to six weeks. The Bears were once thinking playoffs and are still in heat of things, but plagued by injuries could have this once promising team miss the postseason. Next Week: at Broncos.

16. Detroit Lions Record: 7-5 Rank Last Week: 13
The Lions had the hot hand to start the season, but have gone on a cold streak, losing five of their last seven. Detroit is still hopeful for the playoffs, but will need to shake off their losing streak and find new ways to win. Matthew Stafford had another four hundred yard passing day, but then again, this isn’t the only thing that will contribute to wins. These last four games will test this team in more ways than one. Next Week: vs. Vikings.

17. Arizona Cardinals Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 18
Kevin Kolb returned to the Cardinals this week and helped them inch closer in the playoff hunt with a huge overtime win against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals appeared defeated when Dan Bailey made the game winning kick, but Dallas coach Jason Garrett kept their hopes alive by calling timeout at the last second. Kolb hit LaRod Stephens-Howling for a fifty-two yard touchdown to secure the overtime win. The season isn’t over just yet for this team, if they keep winning who knows what might happen. Next Week: vs. 49ers.

18. Seattle Seahawks Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 22
In an effort to save their season, the Seattle Seahawks ran all over the reeling Eagles to give them a fighting chance in the playoff hunt. Marshawn Lynch was great, rushing for a hundred forty eight yards and a couple of first half touchdowns. This was the Seahawks third win in four games and now they hold on for dear life in the playoff hunt. It may be too late for the Seahawks this year, but all aside they ruined the Eagles chances of a hopeful comeback and winning season. Next Week: vs. Rams. (MNF)

19. New York Giants Record: 6-6 Rank Last Week: 17
So close yet so far as the New York Giants gave the Green Bay Packers a run for their money, but were unable to stop the hot hand of Aaron Rodgers in the waning seconds of the game. With their fourth loss in a row, the Giants are now on the edge of missing the playoffs. With a loss by Dallas this weekend, it certainly helped their chances, but now more than ever the Giants will have to break this losing streak if they want to see snow fall in January. Next Week: at Cowboys.

20. San Diego Chargers Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 24
Where in the world did this come from? Monday night’s game for the Chargers saw them as a rejuvenated bunch, outperforming and outscoring the Jaguars by a big margin. If San Diego played like this all season, their record would be much improved. Phillip Rivers was excellent probably playing his best game all year, considering his passing numbers haven’t been so hot this season. With a six game losing streak finally coming to an end, the Chargers now prepare themselves for late season rally. Next Week: vs. Bills.

21. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 27
The art of the Hail Mary paid off this weekend as quarterback Tyler Palko aired one out in the final seconds of the first half. Brain Urlacher deflected the ball into the waiting arms of Dexter McCluster. It was the only touchdown of the game as the Chiefs snap their losing streak. Chicago fans got a brief glimpse of former Bear Kyle Orton wearing Kansas City red, who was injured on his first play and didn’t return to action. There’s still hope for this Chiefs squad. Next Week: at Jets.

22. Miami Dolphins Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 25
The Fins have been on a late season surge winning four of their last five games. It makes you wonder whether or not if the Dolphins had started out this way, how their season would have differed. Matt Moore was pretty good, but it was Reggie Bush who ran for over a hundred yards against the Raiders. This once woeful team is still continuing to impress. The playoffs may be out of reach at this point, but that doesn’t mean the Fins can’t keep swimming strong. Next Week: vs. Eagles.

23. Carolina Panthers Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 28
Cam Newton had a field day this weekend against Tampa Bay, rushing for three touchdowns to set the NFL single season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. Carolina has already doubled the amount of wins from a year ago and Cam Newton looks to be the savior of the Panthers franchise. With a few more years under his belt, the Panthers could be elite team once again. Next Week: vs. Falcons.

24. Washington Redskins Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 19
Losing seven out of their last eight, the Washington Redskins have not been the same team since the first two weeks of the season. In last place in the NFC East, their season is all but over and Mike Shanahan is reeling for answers. There was a chance this weekend for a big win, but the Skins led the Jets over-power them in the fourth quarter to let victory slip away. It’s been another disappointing season for Washington. It will be interesting to see what this team does come the off-season. Next Week: vs. Patriots.

25. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-7 Rank Last Week: 20
This team has seen their season slide into the ground week after week. Now, with the playoffs looming in the distance, the Bills are fighting for their life to stay alive. Five straight losses have sent this team from the top of the AFC East to third. It’s sad to see the wheels coming off this once thought to be dynamic squad. At least this week, Stevie Johnson kept his touchdown celebrations on the classier side. Poor Buffalo, they just can’t seem catch a break. Next Week: at Chargers.

26. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 21
Another loss for the Eagles pits them with the Washington Redskins at the bottom of the NFC East. Vince Young started again for the Eagles with Vick being unable to play and performed lowly. He threw four interceptions, a career high for him, as the Eagles chances of securing a winning season went out the door. It’s hard to say what happened this year in Philly and as the drama mounts, so do the losses and the “boo-birds” from the stands. Next Week: at Dolphins

27. Cleveland Browns Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 23
Losing for the fifth time in six straight games, the Browns are hurting badly and now play on a shortened week on Thursday night football, against the Steelers nonetheless. Their season may be over and maybe it couldn’t have come at a better time considering the Browns are all banged-up. Let the re-building process continue. Next Week: at Steelers. (Thursday night)

28. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-8 Rank Last Week: 26
After starting 3-1, the Buccaneers have struggled the rest of the season dropping their last six of seven games and are all but eliminated from playoff contention. Josh Freeman was out this weekend with an injury to his throwing shoulder, thus giving Josh Johnson an opportunity to play, one that didn’t pan out so well. Tampa Bay should be better than their record indicates, but this season hasn’t gone exactly to plan. Maybe next year, eh? Next Week: at Jaguars

29. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-9 Rank Last Week: 29
Not a good outing for a team looking to keep their season under control. With the recent selling of the team and Jack Del Rio finally out the door, the Jags are looking to rebuild their broken franchise. Jacksonville suffered several miscues and a botched snap to put points on the board Monday night. Unfortunately the future regarding this team is still in question. With time will come answers, hopefully, cross your fingers Jags fans. Next Week: vs. Buccaneers.

30. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-10 Rank Last Week: 30
It was another crushing blow to the Vikings this week who fell into the double-digit loss category this season. Christian Ponder and his boys can’t catch a break considering he passed for three hundred eighty one yards, setting a Minnesota single game rookie record once held by the great Fran Tarkenton. It was a late interception thrown by Ponder that set-up the game winning score by the Broncos. The Vikings lose their fourth in a row and will now begin preparing for next season already. Next Week: vs. Lions.

31. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-10 Rank Last Week: 31
No Sam Bradford again for St. Louis as A.J. Feely filled in for the injured starter. Feely struggled all afternoon and the Rams were not even noticeable in a game that didn’t mean that much to them to begin with. The Rams have been reeling the entire season and now look forward to having a high draft pick come April 2012. Next Week: at Seahawks. (MNF)

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-12 Rank Last Week: 32
With four games remaining, the Colts are on the edge of a winless season. Quarterback Dan Orlovsky replaced Curtis Painter this week and gave the Colts a fighting chance against a dominant Patriots squad. A legendary comeback was in the making, but the Colts were too little too late in accomplishing the feat. The Colts must beat Baltimore, Tennessee, Houston or Jacksonville to avoid 0-16. Next Week: at Ravens

Phil Clark

NFC Goal Line Gossip – Week 13

As you continue to focus on matchups, injuries, weather, and the other factors that tend to keep owners awake late at night, also remember that this week’s Thursday night affair involves the Eagles and Seahawks. Therefore, if you own LeSean McCoy, or Marshawn Lynch, make sure that they are safely inserted into your lineups before the early kickoff transpires.

With that, let’s progress to a detailed look at how the backfields are evolving on every NFC team from a fantasy perspective. This column will provide the comprehensive information that you need, to maximize the chances of winning your fantasy matchups in week 13.

Arizona Cardinals: Ken Whisenhunt chose not to duplicate the conservative employment of Beanie Wells that resulted in just eight carries during week 11, and instead allotted him 27 attempts against St. Louis’ 32nd ranked rush defense. The third-year back responded with a display of commendable toughness, by exploding for 228 yards despite his lingering knee injury. Wells established a new franchise record, while exceeding 100 yards for the second time this season. He is now eighth in rushing for the year with 849 yards, and has now scored eight TDs, after his seven-yard run in week 12. Wells will not have the luxury of facing such a hospitable run defense on Sunday, when he lines up against Dallas’ 10th ranked unit.

Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner has now failed to reach 100 yards in three of his last four games, after he amassed only 60 on 19 attempts in week 12. He had averaged 106 YPG in his previous five contests, before his diminished output against Minnesota’s ninth ranked rush defense. Despite the disappointing result, he is still fourth in among all backs with 948 yards for the season. He also continues to possess one of the league’s most extensive workloads, as his 219 attempts are second only to Maurice Jones-Drew. The yardage will not become any easier to obtain on Sunday, when Turner encounters another formidable rush defense. The fourth ranked Texans are only allowing 92.5 YPC.

Carolina Panthers: Even though the ongoing time share between Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams places a cap on their value, both were viable starters for their exceptional matchup with the 31st ranked Indianapolis rush defense, that had allowed 145.6 YPG, and 12 TDs. Both members of the tandem delivered, as Stewart led the Panthers with 70 rushing yards on 10 attempts, which were supplemented with 12 additional yards on three receptions. However, it was Williams who provided the most fantasy points, by producing two TDs, and amassing 69 yards on a season high 15 carries. It was the first time that Williams has found the end zone since week 5, and the two scores bring his season total to three. Tampa Bay’s 30th ranked run defenders (139.7) now provide another promising matchup, allowing owners to use either back as a low end No. 2 or flex.

Chicago Bears: It was anticipated that Matt Forte would become even more of the Bears’ offensive focal point, in their first game without Jay Cutler. Instead, his 18 touches were the fewest since week 3, and he gained just 59 yards with his 12 rushing attempts. After rushing for 686 yards, and 137 YPG in weeks 4-9, Forte has manufactured only 180 (60 YPG) in his last three. And while he is still third overall in rushing yardage for the season with 985 yards, it is also disconcerting for his owners that Marion Barber has recently acquired an expanding role in the offense. Barber surprisingly captured 10 carries, and generated 63 yards. Forte did collect six passes for 25 yards, and is now second among all backs with 490 receiving yards for the year. Despite the legitimate concerns that have suddenly emerged, Forte should deliver better numbers against Kansas City’s 26th ranked rush defense.

Dallas Cowboys: DeMarco Murray has now rushed for 761 yards since his insertion into the starting lineup in week 7, including the 87 that he accumulated against the stingy Miami rush defense. It was his fourth game in excess of 85 yards, as he has run for at least 73 in every start. He has now gained 834 yards for the season, which places him ninth among all backs. Plus, his 5.7 YPC remains exceptional. He also collected four receptions for 41 yards, which extended his streak of consecutive games with 100+ total yards to four. Felix Jones did not register a carry, and is not a threat to impede Murray’s production anytime soon. Expect more excellent numbers against the Cardinals’ 20th ranked rush defense (123.5 YPG).

Detroit Lions: Kevin Smith exploded into fantasy relevance, with his 201 total yard, three TD performance in week 11, and was on his way to proving that the impressive performance was not a complete fluke. But after amassing 57 yards with his initial 10 touches against the Packers, a high ankle sprained jettisoned him to the sidelines. Maurice Morris then proceeded to torch Green Bay for 120 total yards on 16 touches. While his 39 rushing yards were consistent with his 40 YPG average over the past six contests, his 81 receiving yards were easily a season high, and nearly matched his total for the year entering the game (89). If Morris was dropped in your leagues, after he began serving as Smith’s backup, he should be added immediately. Monitor Smith’s status, as whichever member of the tandem starts against New Orleans, can be used as a No. 3 in your lineups.

Green Bay Packers: James Starks started for Green Bay despite knee and ankle issues, but did not secure his usual workload, nor could he deliver his usual moderate numbers. He aggravated the ankle injury, and was sidelined for most of the second half. His four carries were the fewest this season, and his 19 yards were the lowest since week three. Ryan Grant led the Packers with just 20 yards on six carries. He also supplemented his production with 20 receiving yards on three receptions. However, he continues to provide no incentive for fantasy owners to add him. Starks would only be a low end No. 3, if he is healthy enough to perform against the Giants.

Minnesota Vikings: Toby Gerhart struggled mightily in week 11, gaining just 18 yards on seven carries against the league’s 25th ranked rush defense. Therefore, not much was expected when he faced an Atlanta unit that entered their matchup as the NFL’s second best run defenders. It was then hardly a surprise that Gerhart labored, managing 44 yards on 17 attempts (2.6 YPC), while garnering two passes for an additional 19 yards. Fantasy owners should monitor the status of Adrian Peterson, heading into Sunday’s matchup with Denver’s improving run defense. If All Day is unable to perform, Gerhart should be avoided completely.

New Orleans Saints: Mark Ingram led the Saints with 80 yards on 13 attempts, which was just the second time that he has exceeded 55 all season. That included a 35-yard burst, for his fourth TD of the year. It was just the fifth time that he garnered at least 13 carries, and the first time since week 7. However, six of his attempts occurred after the Saints had scored 42 points, serving as a reminder that game flow will determine his role. Pierre Thomas amassed 64 yards on eight attempts, which was just the second time that he has exceeded 60 yards this season. He also collected 47 more on three receptions, and scored his third TD in the past four games. Darren Sproles ran for 54 yards on eight carries, and caught two passes for 28 yards. He leads all backs with 62 receptions, and is third with 476 yards. He can be used as a No. 2, with Thomas and Ingram as No. 3s against Detroit.

New York Giants: Brandon Jacobs has now started four games while Ahmad Bradshaw performed the role of spectator, and has run for 194 yards. That includes the 46 that he accumulated against the Saints in week 12.

With the 13 carries that he was allotted, Jacobs has averaged 15 APG during his stretch as the feature back. His eight yard score in New Orleans was his fourth rushing TD of the season, and his fifth overall. Bradshaw’s status should be monitored closely heading into Sunday’s encounter with Green Bay. He would resume his previous slot as a No. 2 in your lineups should he return. If he remains sidelined, Jacobs can be used as a No. 3 against the Packers’ 13th ranked rush defense.

Philadelphia Eagles: The injury depleted Philadelphia offense did not rely quite as heavily upon LeSean McCoy as was expected, and he did not deliver the excellent numbers that fantasy owners have become accustomed to. . He produced only 61 total yards on 14 touches, including 31 yards on 10 carries. It was his lowest rushing total since week 4, and just the second time that he has failed to run for at least 70 yards this year. Still, that did improve his season total to 1,050, which makes him the NFL’s rushing leader. Plus, he scored his 11th rushing TD, which is also tied for the league lead. He of course remains a must start, but will be challenged with facing Seattle’s 11th ranked rush defense on a very short week.

San Francisco 49ers: The Ravens’ fifth ranked run defense had been permitting 83.2 YPG, but they limited Frank Gore to less than half of that amount in week 12. His 39 yards represented the lowest output this season, other than his injury shortened appearance in week 10. That is a sizable change from the 127 YPG that he averaged from weeks 4-9. He has also gone four consecutive games without scoring. Still, Gore has now accumulated 909 rushing yards for the year, which is sixth best among all backs. Fantasy owners can expect significantly better results, when he lines up against the Rams, who are allowing a league worst 159 YPG.

Seattle Seahawks: Marshawn Lynch has now exceeded 100 yards in three of the past four games, after assembling 111 in week 12. He has rebounded considerably from an underwhelming initial four weeks of the season, by generating 443 yards in his last four games. That has improved his season yardage total to 706, which is 17th among all backs. He has also scored in seven consecutive games, after collecting a 20-yard TD catch versus Washington. Plus, the 24 carries that he garnered against the Redskins, increased his season total 180 in 11 games, providing fantasy owners with continued confidence that he will be allotted a heavy workload for the remainder of the year. He can be employed as a No. 2 against Philadelphia’s 15th ranked rush defense.

St. Louis Rams: Steven Jackson was supplied with an appealing week 12 matchup, when he lined up against Arizona. Not only had he gashed the Cardinals for 130 yards in week 9, but their unit had also been depleted by injury since that encounter. However, Jackson then proceeded to rush for a disappointing 64 yards on 17 attempts, as shortcomings within the Rams’ 26th ranked passing attack enabled Arizona to focus more extensively on stopping the run. After generating 583 yards in weeks 6-10, Jackson has only averaged 53 YPG in the past two weeks. And, he has failed to score in four consecutive games. He must now deal with San Francisco’s top ranked rush defense, and will only deliver modest numbers at best.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: LeGarrette Blount’s reawakening continued in week 12, as he ripped Tennessee for 103 yards on 20 attempts. While it was just his third 100 yard rushing performance of the year, it was also his second straight. Plus, he collected 56 yards on three receptions, including a 35 yard scamper that incorporated another memorable hurdle for the archives. He has now accumulated 644 yards in nine games, which places him 21st among all backs. Fantasy owners can employ him as a solid No. 2 on Sunday, when he should deliver excellent numbers against Carolina’s 28th ranked rush defense (137.5 YPG, 15 TDs).

Washington Redskins: It seems almost inhumane for any fantasy owners to subject themselves to the extreme risk that is involved with starting any Redskin RBs. But here comes your latest enticement, in the form of Roy Helu’s 162 total yards on 30 touches against Seattle. It was a season high for the rookie, who also generated his best day as a runner with 108 yards on 23 carries. Plus, he scored his first TD on a 29-yard burst. Logically, Helu should now capture a similar workload for the remainder of the year, and produce sizable fantasy points for his owners. If you are willing to gamble that Mike Shanahan will avoid doing the inexplicable, like suddenly thrusting Ryan Torain into the lineup without any rational basis for doing so, then Helu can be used as a No. 2 against the Jets.

Chris Strong

NFL Power Rankings Week 13

Thanksgiving weekend provided some of the most twisted and entertaining match-ups we have seen all year. “Turkey Day” was a wild one starting with a divisional rivalry that ended in a “flag fest” and a possible Ndamukong Suh suspension on the way, a come from behind victory in the Lone Star state, and a brotherly battle in Baltimore. It was a weekend where fans have started to question the ethics and power that referees have on the field. So many missed, questionable, and unnecessary calls were made and now the fans are heated and frustrated with the zebras that rule the football jungle.

The “Tebow Train” rolled to victory again, as the Broncos defeated the Chargers in overtime, while the Raiders held off the “Cutler-less” Bears, and the AFC East battle between the Jets and Bills ended in high fashion where karma got the best of Stevie Johnson and his teammates. Don’t think that trying to be clever will help you win games because it will come back later to haunt you later and cost your team more than you could imagine. The stupidity of players in the NFL has reached new heights.

It was a great weekend of football nonetheless, as we approach the end of the season and the highly anticipated berth of the playoffs. Now, more than ever will be the time to push harder to get into the coveted ranks of the AFC and NFC elites. Let the games begin while…

We look ahead at the Power Rankings heading into Week 13.

1. Green Bay Packers Record: 11-0 Rank Last Week: 1
The Green Bay Packers have won seventeen straight games dating back to last year, downing division rival Detroit this weekend on Thanksgiving. In a wacky contest, the Packers started slow, but got out to a big lead and held it for most of the game. Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdowns and won Fox’s Galloping Gobbler award. The Packers surpassed one of their biggest tests so far this season, but another lies ahead against the Giants next week. Nothing changes from last week’s power rankings.

2. Baltimore Ravens Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 8
John Harbaugh outmatches his brother Jim as the Ravens sack Alex Smith nine times to beat the 49ers, even without middle linebacker Ray Lewis. Baltimore lay a beating on Smith and the Niners as the Ravens managed to chew up much of the clock late in the game. Joe Flacco threw the only touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to help seal the victory and end San Fran’s eight game winning streak. The Ravens lead the AFC North with the advantage over division rival Pittsburgh.

3. New Orleans Saints Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 5
The Saints steamroll the Giants at the Superdome and now have sole possession of first place in the NFC South. Drew Brees was on fire, throwing for over three hundred yards and four touchdowns. The Saints never let down as they keep proving they are one of the best teams in the NFC. Coming as a surprise to no one, the Saints look poised for the playoffs again and are rolling on all cylinders. Beware the Saints are marching in!

4. New England Patriots Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 6
Despite a slow start and falling behind 10-0, Tom Brady rallied the New England Patriots to put a beating on the Philadelphia Eagles. Brady was on fire, throwing for three hundred sixty one yards and three scores, making the Philly D look extremely sloppy. The Patriots looked like their old dominant selves and have uncovered many inconsistencies in the Eagles game play. It’s going to be tough for the Jets and the Bills to chase the predicted AFC East champs.

5. Pittsburgh Steelers Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 3
In a game where the Steelers should have dominated, Pittsburgh was just able to hold on to a slim victory, extending the Chiefs touchdown drought even further. Ben Roethlisberger played with a broken thumb, while the defense lost Troy Polamalu to an injury in the first quarter. It was a defensive battle from start to finish and the Steelers prevailed in the end as they intercepted Kansas City QB Tyler Palko in the waning seconds. The Steelers are tied with the Ravens atop the AFC North and are looking poised for another playoff run. Unfortunately they’ll have to play more consistent if they hope to get back to the Super Bowl this year.

6. San Francisco 49ers Record: 9-2 Rank Last Week: 2
Recording double-digit wins would have been something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving, but unfortunately the 49ers just couldn’t pull out a win against a dominant Ravens team that sacked Alex Smith nine times. The Niners are still a top tier team in the NFC and will most likely still win the West, but now San Francisco has gotten a taste of defeat and will better prepare themselves for when they face similar teams in the playoffs. It’s too bad an eight game winning streak had to come to an end, but this loss may just benefit them in the end.

7. Houston Texans Record: 8-3 Rank Last Week: 4
Despite the win, the Houston Texans have fallen three spots simply because they are in bad shape. At 8-3, Houston has a great chance to go to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Unfortunately, with Matt Schaub out for the season and with Matt Leinart injuring his shoulder over the weekend, the Texans QB dilemma is all but over. The Texans will now have to rely on the arms of T.J Yates and the newly signed Kellen Clemens. It will be devastating if Houston doesn’t make the postseason, and even more so to watch such a promising season go down in flames. Here’s to hoping Houston can hang on and make a late season surge with a couple of unlikely players.

8. Dallas Cowboys Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 10
Dallas keeps their winning streak alive with a win over the surging Dolphins on Thanksgiving. With their fourth win in a row, the Cowboys are making their case for the best in the NFC East. Tony Romo threw two touchdown passes to Laurent Robinson and kicker Dan Bailey was able to knock one through the up-rights in the final seconds to secure a 20-19 win. The Cowboys are gunning for the postseason in style and showing their versatility, not to mention the Dallas cheerleaders are doing the same thing, proving they can withstand the big hits of Big D’s Jason Witten.

9. Oakland Raiders Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 11
Despite the many struggles to punch the ball into the endzone, the Raiders were able to hold on to win against the Chicago Bears. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski kicked a team record six field goals in the game, holding off the Bears just long enough to win. Michael Bush rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Carson Palmer threw for over three hundred yards. The defense was able to prevent Chicago from coming back in the final minute. The Raiders lead the AFC West and look prime to win the division, but they’ll have to beware of the Broncos nipping at their heels.

10. Cincinnati Bengals Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 13
The Bengals faced a scare from division rival Cleveland to get a much-needed win and keep pace with the Ravens and Steelers in the AFC North. Another come from behind victory helped Cincinnati overcome a resilient Browns squad who put up a big fight. Andy Dalton once again led the comeback and kicker Mike Nugent was able to give the Bengals their first lead with thirty-eight seconds left. The Bengals got lucky off another botched Browns snap that helped the Bengals secure the win. The Bengals have had a very strong season and are looking to squeak into a wild card spot.

11. Atlanta Falcons Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 14
The Falcons have been increasingly getting better as the season has progressed. Matt Ryan tossed three TD passes and Atlanta was able to hold off a last minute assault from the Minnesota Vikings. The former NFC South champs are looking to get back to where they were last year, aiming for a wild card spot, chasing the New Orleans Saints in the process. Another impressive victory proved Atlanta is coming out strong and fighting like a team that’s looking for vengeance.

12. Chicago Bears Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 7
The “Cutler-less” Bears struggled with backup QB Caleb Hanie leading the charge against the Raiders. The Bears were headed for such a promising season, with five straight wins and many of the offensive problems that plagued Chicago fixed, they looked like one of the NFC’s elites. But, with Hanie throwing three interceptions, one coming at a crucial moment, Chicago wasn’t able to win on the road. With Cutler out, Chicago is hoping their luck will turn around just long enough for them to make the playoffs. Chicago is missing Cutler more than they have probably realized.

13. Detroit Lions Record: 7-4 Rank Last Week: 9
In what was supposed to be their coming out party, the Lions got out to an early deficit and couldn’t comeback against the dominant Green Bay Packers. Penalties and ejections were affluent in the contest and the Lions frustration was overbearing as they suffer another loss and remain tied in second in the division with the Chicago Bears. Jim Schwartz needs to help keep players emotions in check and learn from the bad performance on Thanksgiving. With five games remaining, Detroit is in the heat for a wild card spot.

14. Denver Broncos Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 15
There are the believers and there are the doubters, but one can’t say they aren’t impressed with the Broncos turnaround this season, especially with Tim Tebow leading the way. Just barely avoiding the first NFL tie since 2008, the Broncos were able to kick the late game winner in overtime to give them a chance to make it to the playoffs. Tebow is now 5-1 as the starter and Denver is icing the competition. They keep this up and it will be quite the remarkable season for a team that started out so rocky.

15. Tennessee Titans Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 16
Chris Johnson finally strutted his stuff rushing for one hundred ninety yards giving Tennessee the edge over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They were able to overcome four turnovers while they forced five of their own as the Titans are streaking towards the wild card slots in the AFC playoff hunt. They’re in the middle of heat and need to keep winning to give them a greater chance of making it to the postseason.

16. New York Jets Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 17
An energetic and exciting, not to mention a must win for Gang Green this weekend against Buffalo was fun to watch. Mark Sanchez threw four touchdown passes to rally his team past an overconfident Buffalo Bills squad. The Jets needed a win to keep pace in the playoff hunt and did just that. An ill-conceived touchdown dance by Bills wide receiver Stevie Johnson came back to haunt him later when Sanchez tossed a TD to Plaxico Burress. In a must win situation, Rex Ryan’s Jets prevailed and overcame a comeback attempt to give them a fighting chance in the AFC playoff race.

17. New York Giants Record: 6-5 Rank Last Week: 12
It was massacre as Eli and the Giants fell victim to Who Dat Nation. Even with four hundred and six passing yards for Eli Manning, the Saints marched all over the Giants defense and the New York offense did its best to keep pace, but couldn’t match the high potent game-play the Saints came in with. The Giants fall to 6-5 and now fall in the hunt for a playoff spot. They play the Packers next and will need to be prepared in order to stay relevant. It’s all about winning games now.

18. Arizona Cardinals Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 26
Patrick Peterson is Mr. Miracle rookie once again running back a punt return against the Rams, a feat he accomplished back in week nine. The Cardinals just edged the Rams in St. Louis and are attempting to gun for the playoffs at 4-7. John Skelton was a little off this week, but Beanie Wells shined running for two hundred twenty eight yards and a touchdown. The Cardinals will need to gear up for the final five games to try and put themselves in a good position for the postseason.

19. Washington Redskins Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 29
Phew! The Skins snapped a six game losing streak as Rex Grossman led Washington to a fourth quarter win against the Seahawks. With such a promising start and then a long slump, the Skins seem to be back to form for the time being. It hasn’t been the most impressive season and really one of the more forgettable ones, but now the Redskins have a chance to make a last minute run to the postseason and try to be the team that started out so promising.

20. Buffalo Bills Record: 5-6 Rank Last Week: 18
Stevie Johnson should be imprisoned for his tasteless impersonation of Plaxico Burress after scoring a touchdown in a losing effort against the Jets. The Bills have lost their fourth straight game and are letting a great season go to waste. At 5-6, the Bills may have little hope left to make it to the postseason. The Bills have been a one hit wonder to begin the season and haven’t found their groove since. Maybe they’ll make the playoffs…maybe not.

21. Philadelphia Eagles Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 19
Andy Reid had one of the worst nights of his life as he had to endure the angry Eagles fans chants at Lincoln Financial Field of “Fire Andy” in the second half while Philly was getting demolished by New England. Vince Young made his second straight start, throwing an impressive four hundred yards, but the Eagles sloppy defense helped rally the Pats to a huge win. The Eagles are all but eliminated from the playoffs and have fallen to 1-5 at home this year. Maybe some thought will be given to the Eagles before they begin the 2012 season?

22. Seattle Seahawks Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 20
Just letting the game slip away this weekend, the Seahawks weren’t able to hold off a fourth quarter rally from Washington. The Seahawks were simply stunned by the Redskins and found themselves flat-footed when victory was close. Marshawn Lycnh rushed for one hundred and eleven yards and caught a twenty-yard touchdown pass in the game, but Seattle wasn’t able to stop the Redskins offense. At 4-7, the playoffs aren’t out of reach just yet.

23. Cleveland Browns Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 22
For the second time in three contests, the Browns suffer a botched snap on a field goal try that would have helped Cleveland win. Instead, they allowed their division rival to comeback and steal a victory that was rightfully theirs. Pat Shurmur has done a pretty good job of leading the Browns this year and their season isn’t over just yet. Even with being last in the division, the Browns still have a slim chance at making the postseason. Don’t hold your breath Browns fans, but be proud that Cleveland is going in the right direction, up.

24. San Diego Chargers Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 23
Six straight losses and the Chargers season has snowballed out of control. Now standing at 4-7, San Diego is on the verge of missing the postseason and having such a promising start go up in flames. This weekend, the Chargers had numerous opportunities to end the stunning winning streak of Denver, but failed to stop them when it mattered most. Nick Novak had a chance to win it in overtime, but missed a fifty-three yard attempt, giving the “Tebow Train” a prime opportunity to win, which they took full advantage of. San Diego has a lot to think about considering their mid-season slump.

25. Miami Dolphins Record: 3-8 Rank Last Week: 21
The winning streak ends at three, as Miami wasn’t able to hold on to victory against the Dallas Cowboys on “Turkey Day.” The Fins hadn’t allowed a touchdown for thirteen quarters until Tony Romo found Laurent Robinson in the endzone at the end of the first half. Matt Moore led Miami to scores on four straight possessions, but couldn’t score on the final drive, giving Dallas an opportunity to win with a last second field goal. The mid-season surge may be over for the Dolphins, but look how far they have come since starting 0-7.

26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 24
Five straight losses have sent the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to 4-7 and a slim chance of making the playoffs. Last year, Tampa Bay was 10-6 just narrowly missing the playoffs. This year has turned into a disaster as the Bucs have struggled to become the team they were a year ago. Dropping a game to the mediocre Titans heaved them in the wrong direction and now with only five games remaining, time seems to be running out again for Tampa Bay.

27. Kansas City Chiefs Record: 4-7 Rank Last Week: 25
Close, but no comeback on Sunday night as the Chiefs lose another game to fall further in the AFC polls. The playoffs are but a distant dream away as last year’s division winner has struggled to score points in the last few weeks, especially touchdowns. In the final minute Kansas City had a big opportunity to achieve the upset, but an over thrown ball and what looked like the wrong route run by wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had their hopes of a comeback fall apart as the pass was intercepted. The playoffs are a long shot, especially with KC’s upcoming schedule, but why not try for them since stranger things have happened in the NFL.

28. Carolina Panthers Record: 3-8 Rank Last Week: 30
A solid win for Carolina as they easily beat the winless Indianapolis Colts. Cam Newton threw for over two hundred yards and Steve Smith had three receptions for sixty-eight yards in a rare road win for the Panthers. The good news for the Panthers is that Cam Newton may receive the rookie of the year award, the bad news is the Panthers probably won’t make the playoffs. For now, Cam Newton has seemingly revived this franchise.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars Record: 3-8 Rank Last Week: 27
Blaine Gabbert hit the bench in the fourth quarter in an important contest against the Texans. Luke McCown took the reins, giving the Jags a late field goal, but still was unsuccessful in completing the comeback against Houston. The Jaguars need to begin accessing their 2012 season right away and decide if Gabbert is the man they want leading the team and more importantly, the debate over Jack Del Rio’s job security should be something to ponder sooner rather than later.

30. Minnesota Vikings Record: 2-9 Rank Last Week: 28
An “Adrian Peterson-less” Vikings squad had more than they could handle against a tough Atlanta team. Percy Harvin made history with the longest kick return that didn’t allot points and the Vikings were too little too late in a comeback attempt that could have really hindered the Falcons. Down 17-0 at the half, Minnesota made a promising comeback attempt coming within three points, but just couldn’t hold off Matt Ryan and the Falcons offense. The Vikings seem to have a strong team, but their heart doesn’t seem to be in it. The Vikings are already looking forward to next year.

31. St. Louis Rams Record: 2-9 Rank Last Week: 31
They try so hard and yet can’t come away with a victory. The Rams fall just shy of beating the Arizona Cardinals, managing to tie the game with just under eight minutes, but gave up a field goal with just over four to go. The Rams couldn’t manage against a ferocious Arizona D and lose their seventh straight to the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Rams take on division rival and leader San Francisco next week. Like the Vikings, next year can’t come soon enough.

32. Indianapolis Colts Record: 0-11 Rank Last Week: 32
A prime opportunity to come away with a win was derailed as Cam Newton and Panthers sent the Colts to 0-11 for the first time since 1986. Any hope of a comeback was lost when Colts QB Curtis Painter threw two late interceptions sealing a Panther victory. Only five games remain to prove that Indy can get at least one win. Cross your fingers Colts fans.

Mike Rodriguez

Start’em Sit’em Week 12

The Fantasy Player Rankings article has been pushed back until Friday to make room for turkey, so I’m going to give my fantasy rundown for Thursday’s game’s while plugging our weekly Start’em Sit’em Gauntlet article

Green Bay at Detroit
How do you not love almost any fantasy option in this game? Rodgers, Stafford, Megatron, Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings (note the order in which I listed them) are always must starts, but even options like James Jones and Ryan Grant seem to have deep sleeper value for the Thursday’s shoot-out. The gamble in starting a 3rd or 4th receiver for Green Bay is the lack of targets, but the payoff is the red zone Touchdown. I’m guessing each team should put up 25-30+ points, so players Brandon Pettigrew and Nate Burleson all of a sudden look very appealing.

My advice is don’t just start a player in this NFC North match-up for the hell of it. More often than not people want a player to cheer for on a day of thanks, I don’t blame you… but if you are starting James Jones over a reliable fantasy option, maybe you should load up on the gravy and call it a weekend. Weigh your options.

Turkey Sleeper Pick: Kevin Smith

Miami at Dallas
I was one of the only Gridiron Expert to pick the Dolphins in a spoiler Thursday. Mainly due to the fact I need to make up ground in our Pigskin picks, but also because I am really liking the Miami offense with Matt Moore under center. The team has finally found rhythm and looks to have confidence lately. Confidence can go a long way in the NFL, and on the road in Dallas.. you’re going to need it.
All top fantasy Cowboys look to have a strong outing, and for those fans of the Cowboys and fantasy owners of Tony Romo, you should almost hope for a challenging game in which Miami threatens to upset. One for the pure enjoyment factor of an exciting game, but also for the fact that the Cowboys love to throw the ball whenever the game is close. The heavy Pass-first offense will be in nap mode if this game is a blowout come the second half. My guess is the Dolphins will start fast and surprise Dallas early. A back and forth game that covers the surprisingly low over/under of 45 total points should keep fantasy options like Laurent Robinson, Reggie Bush and Anthony Fasano’s stock high and worthy of a fantasy football start. I may regret my spoiler upset pick, but I do feel strongly that this game will be a high scoring one.

Turkey Sleeper Pick: Matt Moore

San Francisco at Baltimore
After two games that look and feel like high scoring fantasy love-fests, the San Francisco 49er’s at Baltimore Ravens meeting should wind the night down with some good old fashion defense. Many fantasy options get the red warning-light in this match-up. Frank Gore and Ray Rice will see a high number of carries in the cold Thursday night, but the fantasy output may leave owners feeling “Black-Friday” ripped off from the lack of scores. There were a few this week in our Start’em Sit’em Gauntlet that actually suggested sitting one of these top fantasy RB”s, I won’t go that far, but do suggest resting nearly all wide receivers expect Anquan Boldin.

Turkey Sleeper Pick: Vernon Davis

All in all I excited about Turkey, Football and Family (I guess that order should be flipped?). Have a great Thanksgiving from everyone here at Gridiron Experts.

DC

NFL Picks Week 12

Green Bay-6.5 at Detroit
Of all the teams that the Green Bay Packers face this season the one that we have all circled to be a great challenge is the Detroit Lions. Both of these two teams are exciting, high scoring powerhouses. The real key to this game has to lie in the defense. Detroit has a vicious defensive line and a pass rush that if they get their hands on you, pain has earned a fine from the NFL on more than one occasion. Rodgers is very elusive and will get the ball out quicker than usual Thursday. The Packers may also break out a few more screen plays to frustrate the rush. Overall the passing lanes should be wide open on both sides for big plays. Green Bay likes to gamble a little more on defense jumping routes for the possible interception, which is why I believe we could see a close game until the first major turnover changes the momentum the Packers way. Green Bay 35-24

Miami at Dallas-7
The Cowboys seem to never make things easy on themselves. Last week they punted the ball away just outside of field goal range to the Redskins, only to watch Washington walk down the field and send the game into overtime.

Dallas is the better team on paper, but Miami is no doubt a team that is surging. The Dolphins have life with their newest quarterback Matt Moore who has been a fantasy sleeper the last couple of weeks. There has even been talk about the Dolphins running the table and challenging for a playoff spot, as crazy as that may sound, the first big step is a win in Dallas on Thanksgiving. The Cowboys seem to always be handed an easier opponent on Thanksgiving, and two weeks ago I wouldn’t have batted an eye at this game. But with the streaky play from the Cowboys on offense and the frustrating resume of bad decisions at key times by Tony Romo, makes me want to pick a spoiler. Instead, I see a close near upset with the Cowboys pulling out a win in a tight one. Dallas 30-21

San Francisco at Baltimore-3
Family and Thanksgiving meets the NFL in a new way this year. For the first time ever, head coaching brothers with face off against each other in a prime time game. Both of these respective teams could go as far as the Super Bowl, but Thursday should show us all the real San Francisco 49er’s up close and personal. I believe as good as the Ravens are, the 49er’s are a sleeping giant in the NFL and will surprise many who haven’t had the chance to see this team up close and personal. San Francisco 24-20
