  • Will the McNabb trade rumors ever end…No
The St .Louis Rams are most likely going to be the team that gets themselves a new quarterback this offseason, whether it be threw the draft or threw a trade. And while many thought the perfect fit was Mike Vick to St.Louis rumors are now surfacing on McNabb to the Rams.
Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports, more than one well-informed source as said the Rams have had intense internal conversations about trading for Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb.
Odds are this is 100% garbage, and more of a rumor than a source, but either way it has to be put out there. The Rams wouldn’t trade the first overall pick for McNabb but could arrange a trade to move down in the draft, thereby gaining picks worthy of a deal for Philadelphia. To be honest this sounds like a long shot… [UPDATE] Since I first posted this a comment from the source has come forward to say he miss-spoke,way to go: read here
  • Mike Vick Wants to be a Panther
Good for him, Mike Vick should be happy to be a quarterback. With comments to the media about wanting to go to a specific team only adds more of a headache to make it happen. Vick should be happy to get a starting gig anywhere and needs to remain quit for the time being.
“If I could play for any team in the league, it would probably be two teams, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be the Carolina Panthers,” Vick said, via Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer. adding: ”Well, you know, it’s close to home,” Vick said. “I like the uniforms. You get to play against Atlanta twice a year. Ain’t nothing better than playing against your former team, right? So, yeah, that would be a good look, it would be a good look.”…..he likes the uniforms? really?….what are you a girl?
  • Taylor Mays Almost Ran Back in Time
Former USC Safety Taylor Mays ran an amazing 40-time Tuesday morning at the NFL scouting combine. Taylors unofficial time was 4.24 seconds.
His stock has now gone threw the roof, Taylor who was seen as a bigger more physical DB standing tall at 6′3 230 lb, has just opened the eyes of everyone to the possiblity of not only having a guy that can knock helmets off, but can run toe to toe with the fastest receivers in the league.
We had Mays around the mid-teens area but wouldn’t be surprised if people starting talking about him in the top 5.

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 2)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on a NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players that can step in now that they have a year under them, and the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft. So here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

11) Denver Broncos Team Needs: DT | DE | WR | QB

Strange to see Denver this high on the board considering the fast start to the season with new coach Josh McDaniel’s. The Broncos completely fell apart in the final month of the season, losing 4 games in a row, including losses to the Chiefs and Raiders.

The Broncos will likely try to improve their running defense through free agency and could target an offensive playmaker with pick 10. The Brandon Marshall trade rumors have started to fire up, causing many mock draft experts to target the top wide receiver landing in Denver.

Demaryius Thomas is high in our books, but a broken foot could hurt his stock value, making Dez Bryant a strong favorite. There is also a chance that if a top QB is available at 10 the Broncos could fill the shoes left by Jay Cutler. Either way the Broncos are sitting strong at pick 10 to take the best player available without the huge rookie money at the top of the draft.

12) Miami Dolphins Team Needs: WR | LB | SS

The Dolphins had injuries to key players in ‘09, but did an amazing job filling position spots. Players stepped up week after week to fill roles unlike any other team. The Dolphins are a diamond in the rough; if they can stay healthy and add a couple playmakers, this team could challenge for the AFC East division title.

This young team is a year older and wiser now, and will try to grow on the accomplishments of the ‘09 season. Personally Gridiron Experts would like to see this pick used on the offensive side of the ball, and we’re sure fans would agree. Adding a WR that can stretch the field would be ideal for this running attack, yet the team has enough rookies, and leadership would be nice as well.

We think trading this pick to a team like Arizona for a smart, tough WR like Anquan Boldin would be a great move. At 29 the trade wouldn’t be pick for player, but if a mid round pick came with Boldin, the Dolphins would walk away happy. Gridiron Experts sees pick 12 the first traded away pick of the draft, either down to gain more picks, or to another team for a veteran leader. The Dolphins are already a young team and need to add talent and wisdom now.

13) San Francisco 49er’s Team Needs: OT | WR | SS | KR

The only thing the 49er’s need to do this offseason is cut Takeo Spikes. Why? Because the veteran linebacker is a playoff curse. In the 12 years that Takeo Spikes has been in the NFL he has never been a part of a team that has made the playoffs…wow!

The 49er’s don’t really have any massive needs on the team, despite what some may say about QB Alex Smith.

Alex Smith was solid down the stretch and should have done just enough to have earned another opportunity to start for the 49er’s next season. There is a chance that Smith could succeed and lead this team into the post season if a smart offensive system can be installed that this young club can get behind.  Keep in mind we’re being optimistic, as newly hired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye II doesn’t come with an impressive resume. Raye has never run an offense that has ranked high in any category that mattered, and his hiring makes no sense in the direction the

Fan Fun at the NFL Scouting Combine

While watching the NFL scouting combine a thought hit me:  Wouldn’t it be great if the average fan could get a chance to test their skills against ultimately the NFL’s best future prospects?  Kind of like when NFL experts make their game predictions and include the picks of a monkey who spins a wheel or picks a lucky banana out of a basket. Lately the bone-head lucky picks are more often boner picks where smoking hot women pick games of teams that they have never heard of.  Never the less comic relief could add more viewers to something that many find very boring.

Imagine going to Indianapolis and showing off your skills or lack thereof?  You would get measured, weighed, and fully examined by one of the best medical staffs around.  Then off to show your stuff in six drills each participant will take part in.  Here is a

1) St. Louis Rams Team Needs: DT | QB | OT | CB | WR

The Rams really can’t screw this up. There are so many needs on this team that no matter whom they are able to grab in free agency, a blue chip player will be added to this team in the first round. Everyone is preaching about Ndamukong Suh, but the Rams have so much already invested on the defensive line that trading down a couple spots could really pay off with adding more talent quickly. A trade that could drop the Rams down just 5-6 spots is worth its weight in gold.

Mike Vick would be a great fit for this club since the Rams play in a dome, but the Eagles “no trade until the pre-season” smoke screen means the price is not cheap. Right now we’d say unload DE L. Little to the Eagles for Vick, and try to steal a couple of Philly’s late round picks, then grab Suh at pick one. Like we said, the end result is hard to mess up with the top pick in the draft, but teams do it all the time. The good news is there is so much offensive and defensive talent on the board this year that we’d be amazed if the Rams couldn’t improve on their 2 win season.

2) Detroit Lions Team Needs: DE | LB | CB …Anything On Defense

The Lions added a couple good defensive pieces last year with SS Louis Delmas and DT Sammie Lee Hill, but they need more. It’s unlikely that any of these bottom feeder teams are going to lure away an elite unrestricted free agent, so the Detroit Lions best bet is to simply take the best defensive player available. Another top key to this offseason for the Lions would be re-signing Larry Foote, who didn’t play as bad as his surrounding cast last year (70 tackles and 2 sacks). Re-signing Foote and maybe CB Williams James are the Lions top priorities in the next couple weeks.

3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Needs: DT | DE |LB | OL

The Buccaneers had the NFL’s worst rushing defense last year, allowing an average of 158.2 yards per game on the ground. Fans can say what they want about needing offense, but they’re in a division with Carolina’s J. Stewart and D. Williams, Falcons Michael Turner  and the Saints offensive attack. Pressure on the QB and stopping the run are big needs this offseason. DT Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma would be a great fit for the Bucs, but if Tampa can somehow add depth through free agency they would benefit from adding some kind of a pass rusher or one of the

NFL Draft Player Profile: Jermaine Gresham

Jermaine Gresham
Tight End | Oklahoma
6’6’’ | 260 lbs.
Gresham is going to be off the draft board by the mid-second round at the tight end position, but his value might force a team to spring on him early. Gresham’s nothing short of a phenomenal athlete and will provide a receiving threat from the tight end position. His very skill set is prototypical to the offenses run in the NFL today – your tight end needs to be able to chip a defender and catch the ball.

He has absolutely excellent size and his reach is incredibly long, making him a deadly red zone threat that’s going to pull in the big reception when you need it on the goal line.
He’s got the strength to be an elite blocker from the position at the next level, but doesn’t seem to care much about his blocking technique, as he is consistently allowing his pad level to get high during run blocking. But this has and will be coached out of him by the right NFL team.

As a pass catcher, he’s exactly what you look for in a tight end, and even in a wide receiver. He’ll catch the ball at the highest point, concentrate while making the catch and use his hands and not

Demaryius Thomas Player Profile
As a 6 foot 3, 235 pound wide receiver coming out of Georgia Tech, it’s difficult not to draw comparisons to Calvin Johnson, but for now the name won’t be mentioned as Thomas may have what it takes to emerge from behind the consummate pro’s shadow.

In a relatively simple run oriented scheme Thomas hasn’t recorded stellar numbers over his career although we can shoulder some of that load on the system. Through his past two seasons Thomas is the only player on Georgia Tech to record more than 10 receptions in a season (46,39 receptions) everyone else was lucky to have 5-6 catches. Thankfully for him, this past year the team opted to take more advantage of his talent; Thomas hauled in 46 passes for 1,154 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The system he played in college required that Thomas blocked on most downs, naturally due to this he’s well ahead of the competition in the blocking department than most WR’s in the nation. On the other hand

NFL Draft Player Profile: Everson Griffen

Everson Griffen

Defensive End | University Of Southern California

6’3’’ | 278 lbs.

Everson Griffen has the athletic tools to be a great player in the NFL. The question is whether or not his passion for the game will hold up long enough for him to accomplish that.

He has the ability to play both a 4-3 scheme defensive and a 3-4 scheme outside linebacker, which is something that we’re seeing more and more in recent years of prospects coming out of college. You’ve got to be able to excel at one position, but have the talent to play the other if called upon to.

This opens up his “draftability” exponentially. Being able to play a position in both schemes allows any team with a need to draft him, thus making it more likely that he comes off the board in the first two rounds.

He’s got the size to play both positions and is very comfortable in coverage because of his speed and his ability to make plays from sideline to sideline.

He keeps his pads low to the great, which equates to him winning the battle at the line of scrimmage

NFL Draft Player Profile: Toby Gerhart

Toby Gerhart

Running back | Stanford University

6’1’’ | 235 lbs.

Toby Gerhart’s got talent, there’s no doubt about that. A lot of people had him as last year’s Heisman winner, including me. Well, let me re-phrase that, I continuously said that he SHOULD have won last year’s Heisman Trophy, not necessarily the one who WOULD win it. It was like that for a lot of people that I talk to.

Gerhart isn’t going to amaze you with his speed or athleticism. But his toughness and love for contact is certainly refreshing in a day and age in the NFL where speed runners are getting all of the credit for a team’s running success.

He’s a very smart runner, always on the lookout for his blockers and possible cutback zones. Unfortunately he doesn’t exactly have excellent change of direction ability.

He does however have a competitive spirit and a motor. Coupled with no off the field issues and you’ve got a class act all around that just enjoys the game of football. Oh, and hitting people’s one of the man’s best features.

His lack of running back ‘moves’ isn’t necessarily a downfall when you consider that his workload in the NFL is going to consist of mainly short yardage situations. His skill set of not moving laterally and his ability to keep his feet churning upon contact is going to come in handy at the next level.

The problem with running him consistently at the next level is that in college he was playing against smaller linebackers with bad technique. In

NFL Scouts Taking Notice of Big East Draft Talent

Jason Pierre-Paul will be signing an NFL contract this summer. The Junior DE from South Florida is projected to be a late first round selection and should be a millionaire after he signs his deal and reports to training camp.  This should provide quite a change of lifestyle from living in junior college dorms and  USF apartments.  Pierre-Paul will be one of 256 college players joining the NFL from schools all across the country.  Many will come from the usual BCS conferences that seem to dominate NFL rosters year in and year out, the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and Pac 10.  However several talented players, like Pierre-Paul, will be coming out of the NCAA’s red-headed step child conference of the BCS, the Big East.  And many NFL general managers are starting to take notice.

The amount of Big East players finding their way on NFL rosters is definitely on the rise.  Since 2006, the number of draft picks has steadily risen while the powerhouse SEC has remained relatively constant.  This should show the rising parity in college football even though many experts insist on declaring the SEC as the only dominant conference.

Big East
27 draft picks in 2009
19 draft picks in 2008
16 draft picks in 2007
11 draft picks in 2006

SEC
37 draft picks in 2009
35 draft picks in 2008
41 draft picks in 2007
37 draft picks in 2006

Since losing Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College to the ACC, the Big East has been rebuilding.  Programs like Cincinnati, UConn, USF are quickly improving and joining established programs like Pitt and West Virginia.  And while the Big East does not have the big name coaches of the SEC nor the national television exposure of the Big Ten, it does have quite a fair share of NFL level talent.  Players like Dwight Freeney, Donovan
