Top 5 Trade Destinations for Brandon Marshall

The Denver Broncos have most likely already received trade inquiries about star wide receiver Brandon Marshall, many see this star player a lost cause in the Denver areas and expect him to be released any day. In all likelihood the Broncos would want to bring back their top pass catcher for the 2010 season but know that cutting the ties with Marshall is a smarter move, instead of trying reconcile any outstanding issues in hopes of a long term contract and dealing with weekly headaches through the media.  If however the Broncos do decide the best case scenario would be to unload Marshall, as they did with Cutler, then they would be looking for certain criteria from trade partners.

First off the Broncos would be reluctant to trade Marshall within the AFC and extremely reluctant to trade him within their own division.  Therefore, this first criterion would eliminate half of the NFL teams.   Second, and most importantly, Denver would try and get as much as they can for a player who can dominate on any given Sunday.   There are not many NFC teams with a possible need at WR and the desire to pull off a trade for Marshall.

Below is a listing of the top five NFC teams that could make a run at acquiring Brandon Marshall.  The analysis of each team includes the teams current offensive situation along with the teams picks within the first four rounds of the upcoming 2010 draft.

5)  St Louis Rams – The Rams are arguably the worst team in the NFL, but imagine what their skilled positions would look like if they were to pull off a trade for Marshall?  With Marshall on board defenses would have to respect Marshalls abilities and this in turn would open up the running game for Steven Jackson.  In all likelihood the Rams will use a draft pick on a

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on an NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players who can step in now that they have a year under them; the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft, so here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

1) St. Louis Rams Team Needs: DT | QB | OT | CB | WR

The Rams really can’t screw this up. There are so many needs on this team that no matter whom they are able to grab in free agency, a blue chip player will be added to this team in the first round. Everyone is preaching about Ndamukong Suh, but the Rams have so much already invested on the defensive line that trading down a couple spots could really pay off with adding more talent quickly. A trade that could drop the Rams down just 5-6 spots is worth its weight in gold.

Mike Vick would be a great fit for this club since the Rams play in a dome, but the Eagles “no trade until the pre-season” smoke screen means the price is not cheap. Right now we’d say unload DE L. Little to the Eagles for Vick, and try to steal a couple of Philly’s late round picks, then grab Suh at pick one. Like we said, the end result is hard to mess up with the top pick in the draft, but teams do it all the time. The good news is there is so much offensive and defensive talent on the board this year that we’d be amazed if the Rams couldn’t improve on their 2 win season.

2) Detroit Lions Team Needs: DE | LB | CB …Anything On Defense

The Lions added a couple good defensive pieces last year with SS Louis Delmas and DT Sammie Lee Hill, but they need more. It’s unlikely that any of these bottom feeder teams are going to lure away an elite unrestricted free agent, so the Detroit Lions best bet is to simply take the best defensive player available. Another top key to this offseason for the Lions would be re-signing Larry Foote, who didn’t play as bad as his surrounding cast last year (70 tackles and 2 sacks). Re-signing Foote and maybe CB Williams James are the Lions top priorities in the next couple weeks.

3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Needs: DT | DE |LB | OL

The Buccaneers had the NFL’s worst rushing defense last year, allowing an average of 158.2 yards per game on the ground. Fans can say what they want about needing offense, but they’re in a division with Carolina’s J. Stewart and D. Williams, Falcons Michael Turner  and the Saints offensive attack. Pressure on the QB and stopping the run are big needs this offseason. DT Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma would be a great fit for the Bucs, but if Tampa can somehow add depth through free agency they would benefit from adding some kind of a pass rusher or one of the

Eagles Triple QB Option
Philadelphia is in a nice situation. While the media is stirring up countless rumors about its three-headed horse at quarterback, the end result will actually be Philly getting exactly what it wants:

Its quarterback, and some picks for those “other” two guys.

Sure, it’s nice to have a stockpile of three guys who can produce at a high level at one position. But it’s not realistic for any team, let alone one with holes in it’s defense, to stand pat and waste so much talent.

So, who stays, and who goes?

That’s actually a lot easier to answer that most are letting on.  In fact, it can be summed up in one beautiful run-on sentence. Regardless of popular opinion, the problem in Philly is not Donovan McNabb. Michael Vick was a failed one-year experiment, and as solid as Kevin Kolb was in two relief starts, he doesn’t have to be the future of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Yes, McNabb is 33, in his last season of his contract and is due some big money. But it’s not like the guy doesn’t deserve it. He’s still playing at a high level, helped the Eagles go 11-5 and made it to the playoffs in 2009. And what does he get for it? He gets burned at the stake by the media and fans alike, despite no help from a sulking offensive line, zero commitment to the run game and a defense that was routinely held back by it’s

Kurt Warner Retires

The rags to riches Kurt Warner says goodbye to his career in the NFL. Warner is a made for TV movie waiting to happen with his surreal rise threw the NFL rankings to become a elite quarterback.

“Obviously, it’s been 12 unbelievable years, some of the best years of my life,” Warner said Friday. “I don’t think I could have dreamt it would have played out like it has. . . . But I want everybody to know that I’m just as excited about the next 12, that I’m excited about what lies in front of me. I’m excited about spending more time with my family, and seeing what God’s going to do next.”

The Arena Football League and NFL Europe was his starting point as a QB, but people can’t forget his beginning stocking grocery shelves. After having an amazing stint with St.Louis in which they captured Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000 Warner’s career looked to take a dip, signing a free-agent contract with the Giants in 2004 and leading the team to a 5-4 record, before rookie Eli Manning replaced him after nine games. Warner came to the Cardinals in 2005 and was an off-and-on starter before replacing the injured Matt Leinart part way through the 2007 season. You could say he had two careers in which he fought his way through adversity. In the end, love him or hate him the story of Kurt Warner and his passion for the game is very impressive and he will be missed by the fans in Arizona and around the league.

Season is OverParity is Over… Thank God

One of the most annoying things in the NFL over the past few seasons has to have been the word “parity” being loosely thrown around in the vernacular of all NFL analysts and announcers. Why was this so annoying? Because parity completely replaced the “Any Given Sunday” rule. On Monday Night ESPN Analyst and former all time 49ers great Steve Young busted out the term once more, albeit in a different fashion telling us all that “the days of parity are over”. Well these days, if they did exist, are in fact over because there is a large crop of teams this year that just can’t get it together and hence are paving the way for the teams that should be racking up the W’s.

Looking back historically, by this week the NFL has an average of 98.3 losses over the last 4 seasons; right now the NFL currently has 107 losses, which is not dangerously over pace but is a quick example of what is being spoken about.  What I mean to say exactly is that there are a handful of teams this year that can easily be scratched off your teams schedule for a win, unless of course you are one of these teams. These teams are: the St. Louis Rams (0-7), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-7), the Tennessee Titans (0-6), the Cleveland Browns (1-6), the Kansas City Chiefs (1-6), the Detroit Lions (1-5), the Washington Redskins (2-5), the Oakland Raiders (2-5), the Seattle Seahawks – if they fail to stay healthy (2-4), the Carolina Panthers (2-4),  the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-3), and

NFL Chopping Block- Who’s on the way out?

The trade deadline is the 20th, and there is a lot of speculation surrounding several bottom-of-the-barrel teams, and for good reason.

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly at least discussing trading Terrell Owens, their one-year free agent splash, while the Browns have had to fight off rumors about parting ways with former franchise quarterback Brady Quinn, and star return man Josh Cribbs.

There are eight teams that are close to throwing their season away.

Here’s a look at all eight of those teams, a trade-bait suggestion or two, and some analysis to think about as we head toward the October 20th NFL trade deadline.

Carolina Panthers (2-3)steve-smith

They finally got a win last week against the Washington Redskins, but even that wasn’t very convincing. They’re in a division with two very solid teams in front of them, and don’t have much breathing room. Like it or not, it’s probably best to start thinking about 2010.

Trade Julius Peppers and/or Steve Smith.

They franchised Peppers, so they know he’s as good as gone either way; now is the time to get what they can for him. Just about any contending team out there will at least express some interest. However, considering the franchise tag, everyone knows the asking price can’t be as high as Carolina wishes it could be. Look for the Denver Broncos to be involved, as well as anyone who wouldn’t mind giving up a high pick or a possible future Jake Delhomme replacement.

As for Steve Smith, even he has been open about the fact that he’s basically a decoy now, due to the ineffectiveness of the passing game. Carolina would get rid of Jake Delhomme if they could, but they may have to settle for making Smith happy and getting as much value in return as possible.

Buffalo Bills (2-4)

Head coach Dick Jauron is almost certainly out the door by mid-season, while many are beginning to question if quarterback Trent Edwards has what it takes to be a successful franchise quarterback.

Trade Terrell Owens, Marshawn Lynch, and/or Fred Jackson.

Packers Rams Quick Preview

Green Bay Packers @ St. Louis Rams

NFL Odds Makers:
Current Line: Packers -6.5

What’s On The Line:
The Green Bay Packers had an impressive win in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears and then quickly let the balloon deflate in Week 2 after losing at home to the Cincinnati Bengals. The Packers can’t afford to lose games in a row against teams perceived to be in the NFL’s basement. So far this year, the Packers defense has been decent but their offense, which was supposed to be one of the most explosive units in the NFL, has been a big letdown.

For the Rams, this is just another game. They would like to end their 12-game losing streak but for a franchise that’s won just five of their last 34 games, one win won’t mean much. They need a revolution. They put up a fight in Washington and another good performance in their home opener would give the indication that they are heading in the right direction. They could be in a tough spot this week, though.

Who Has The Edge:

The Packers Super Bowl odds flew up after they beat the Bears but now they are back to reality, so to speak, as they sit at 1-1. The good news is that they should be able to get their offense going this week.

Grading the Draft: NFC West

Category : Arizona Cardinals, NFL Draft / Off Season, San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks, St. Louis Rams

Grading the Draft: NFC West
Seattle Seahawks
1(4) LB Aaron Curry- Best player available is sometimes the smartest draft strategy. The Seattle Seahawks are stacked at linebacker with Lofa Tatupu and Leroy Hill but adding Aaron Curry into the mix creates one of the leagues strongest units. Seattle faces Steven Jackson, Frank Gore aaron-curry1and now Chris “Beanie” Wells in the NFC West on a regular basis, adding an elite player like Aaron Curry should be an excellent first step in regaining the toughness that Seattle once had on defense. Curry has long arms and possesses a very quick first step, he should start all year. Great pick!
2(17) C Max Unger- Unger doesn’t have to got far to become a pro offensive player. Not only was he right next door, playing all his college games at Oregon, Unger started every game in all four years for the Ducks. He has the power to handle the stronger players at the point of attack and will find a home on the offensive line early in his first year.
3(27) WR Deon Butler- might be a reach, unless he becomes an instant starter on kick returns there was no need to draft him this high, Butler is a all or nothing type player.
6(5) QB Mike Teel- Project player with good strong arm
Summary- the Seahawks get a huge boost in this draft grade after stealing away the Broncos 1st round pick next year. Seattle traded the 37th overall pick to Denver for Broncos’ 2010 First Round Pick. Add in the Curry and Unger and day two of the draft doesn’t even matter
Draft Grade: B+

San Francisco 49er’scrabtree-td1

1(10) WR Michael Crabtree- What a steal, The 49er’s are stilling laughing at the Oakland Raiders for passing on this amazing wide-out. Crabtree has the ability to change a game in an instant and creates momentum with highlight reel catches and plays. If the 49er’s can find someone to throw him the ball expect a solid rookie season out of this kid.
3(10) RB Glen Coffee- Smart pick adding another relief player behind Frank Gore that can be groomed for the future. Coffee fits better into a zone blocking scheme with the one-cut-and-go type strategy but has the skills to be used on every down.
5(10) LB Scott McKillop- Nice addition this late into the draft, may struggle to find a spot but could be a strong special team player
Other Moves: The Niners made some smart picks on day 2 adding depth at QB with Nate Davis and Bear Pascoe at Tight End. Both players have a chance to move up the depth chart fast with huge question marks on the offense. Late round picks Ricky Jean-Francois and Curtis Taylor are long shots to make the team
Draft Grade: C+

laurinaitisSt. Louis Rams
1(2) OT Jason Smith- Great pick, no need to analyze this one, Smith fills a huge hole that the Rams desperately needed to fix. Should start every game at left tackle.
2(3) LB James Laurinaitis- Steal! Great player that will fit perfectly in Spag’s defense, despite having a learning curve ahead of him. 3 year starter at Ohio State with at least 100 plus tackles in each of those years. Quick to diagnose plays and flows fast to the ball. Will take a bit a time to groom and might not have the best rookie start to the season but Laurinaitis will become the leader for the Rams much sooner than later.
3(2) DB Bradley Fletcher- to be honest Fletcher wasn’t that memorable until stepping up at the East West Shrine game. Great all round athlete that might be a better suited at Safety.
4(3) DT Dorell Scott- Another player that may be considered a sleeper. Scott had a rough year for Clemson in 08, but an excellent combine. The big man ran a 4.92, 40-yard dash at 312 pounds..That’s very impressive.
Other Moves: Offensive long shots were the name of the game at the bottom of the Rams draft. QB Keith Null has all the skills and size but will be a long shot on the roster. Running back Chris Ogbonnaya from Texas might be able to squeeze on the team in a reserve role as well as WR Brooks Foster on special teams.
Draft Grade: B

Arizona Cardinals
1(31) RB Chris Beanie Wells- Fallen Ohio State running back will prove to many that he shouldn’t have been overlooked. Cards got themselves a great every down RB, although Wells won’t likely get a heavy workload his use around the goal line will be very valuable. Not the perfect fit that Beanie was dreaming about, but a great pick up for the Cardinals.
chris_wells12(31) DE Cody Brown- Fits well into the 3-4 defense adding great pass rushing skills and vision to the defense. Brown has a boom or bust tag on him in our opinion, he is a little undersized and has been known to take plays off.
3(31) SS Rashad Johnson- Best pick of the day, good awareness, instincts and is a hard hitter. Should find his way on to the field early
4(31) CB Greg Toler- another high risk player coming from a small school. There is much for him to learn, especially coming from his level of competition playing at St Pauls, but the Cards see something special in him.
5(31) OT Herman Johnson- At 6′7, 330lbs and coming from the university of LSU Johnson has on paper the skills to find a starting job at the next level, but after a long list of injuries (including a spider bite that cost him 3 games) toughness is a major concern
Overall: Not the biggest fan of this draft, Wells is a great player but Hightower is the same type of guy. With so many high risk players the Cardinals might not have much to add to their roster with this draft, even in a year or two.
Draft Grade: C
