NFL Free Agent Travel Plans

  • The Seahawks are not expected to tender an offer sheet to restricted free agent Brandon Marshall during his Saturday visit, but after the long history of bust receivers in the first round coughing up a 1st round pick for this talented wide-out would be like doubling down while playing Online Blackjack, the risk is worth the reward. Free agent CB Will James has scheduled a visit with the Seattle Seahawks, James has bounce around the league in the last 3-4 years but can be a solid 3rd corner. The Seahawks also have scheduled a visit with free agent TE Chris Baker and restricted free agent RB Mike Bell.
  • DE Aaron Kampman is one of the Jaguars’ “top priorities” in free agency and is scheduled to visit Jacksonville this week.
  • Free agent running back Willie Parker is scheduled to visit the Redskins on Monday.
  • David Carr is reportedly drawing a lot of interest from the Giants, Browns, and Cardinals but a top player is the 49er’s, would love to add another QB into the mix. Carr has been holding a clip board for a couple seasons now, but after being forced into a starting role so early into his career, teams are willing to take a shot on Carr’s comeback
  • Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Friday that the Bengals have shown interest in free agent Terrell Owens, this could combine for a lethal duo of wide receivers if #85 and #81 could keep their egos in check.
  • In a surprise move the Philadelphia Eagles have released LB Will Witherspoon after trading for him last season. Witherspoon had a good season but the Eagles must have felt $5 million was to0 heavy of a price tag. Panthers beat writer Steve Reed thinks the Panthers could be interested in bringing him if the price is right.
  • CB Leigh Bodden has drawn interest from the Texans and Patriots, but Bodden seems to be a player that

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 2)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on a NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players that can step in now that they have a year under them, and the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft. So here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

Read the First Article: Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

11) Denver Broncos Team Needs: DT | DE | WR | QB

Strange to see Denver this high on the board considering the fast start to the season with new coach Josh McDaniel’s. The Broncos completely fell apart in the final month of the season, losing 4 games in a row, including losses to the Chiefs and Raiders.

The Broncos will likely try to improve their running defense through free agency and could target an offensive playmaker with pick 10. The Brandon Marshall trade rumors have started to fire up, causing many mock draft experts to target the top wide receiver landing in Denver.

Demaryius Thomas is high in our books, but a broken foot could hurt his stock value, making Dez Bryant a strong favorite. There is also a chance that if a top QB is available at 10 the Broncos could fill the shoes left by Jay Cutler. Either way the Broncos are sitting strong at pick 10 to take the best player available without the huge rookie money at the top of the draft.

12) Miami Dolphins Team Needs: WR | LB | SS

The Dolphins had injuries to key players in ‘09, but did an amazing job filling position spots. Players stepped up week after week to fill roles unlike any other team. The Dolphins are a diamond in the rough; if they can stay healthy and add a couple playmakers, this team could challenge for the AFC East division title.

This young team is a year older and wiser now, and will try to grow on the accomplishments of the ‘09 season. Personally Gridiron Experts would like to see this pick used on the offensive side of the ball, and we’re sure fans would agree. Adding a WR that can stretch the field would be ideal for this running attack, yet the team has enough rookies, and leadership would be nice as well.

We think trading this pick to a team like Arizona for a smart, tough WR like Anquan Boldin would be a great move. At 29 the trade wouldn’t be pick for player, but if a mid round pick came with Boldin, the Dolphins would walk away happy. Gridiron Experts sees pick 12 the first traded away pick of the draft, either down to gain more picks, or to another team for a veteran leader. The Dolphins are already a young team and need to add talent and wisdom now.

13) San Francisco 49er’s Team Needs: OT | WR | SS | KR

The only thing the 49er’s need to do this offseason is cut Takeo Spikes. Why? Because the veteran linebacker is a playoff curse. In the 12 years that Takeo Spikes has been in the NFL he has never been a part of a team that has made the playoffs…wow!

The 49er’s don’t really have any massive needs on the team, despite what some may say about QB Alex Smith.

Alex Smith was solid down the stretch and should have done just enough to have earned another opportunity to start for the 49er’s next season. There is a chance that Smith could succeed and lead this team into the post season if a smart offensive system can be installed that this young club can get behind.  Keep in mind we’re being optimistic, as newly hired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye II doesn’t come with an impressive resume. Raye has never run an offense that has ranked high in any category that mattered, and his hiring makes no sense in the direction the

My 2010 HOF Ballot

First of all, I’m not a fan of “big” Hall of Fame classes. I’d honestly like to see no more than five guys inducted a year. I think smaller classes shine the spotlight on each player receiving the greatest individual achievement in their sport.  I also think that when the big-name players are enshrined, the classes should be smaller, like three players max. Point in case: we’re already forgetting that David Robinson and John Stockton were part of the Michael Jordan NBA HOF Class of 2009.  Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan and Rutgers women’s basketball coach Vivian Stringer were also part of that class, but no one will remember that in five years. It’s a shame.

That being said, the problem with the NFL Hall of Fame is that the voters continue to overlook a lot of well qualified individuals, thus creating a backlog of players who should be enshrined in Canton, OH. (Cough, cough…RAY GUY!!!)

So, I pared my list down to seven individuals. That’s more than the five I’d like to see. But, as you’ll see, there are some old-schoolers on this list

Storm Changes NFL Game Times

The East Coast is being hit by a huge storm that is predicted to drop upwards of 12 to 20 inches of snow, and has caused some changes throughout the NFL’s weekend schedule.

The 49er’s and Eagles game has been pushed back to a 1 pm kickoff (ET) in anticipation of the storm. As a public-safety concern, the changes were made to accommodate fans and allow more time for city and stadium personnel to clear streets and walkways in and around the stadium. The game between the Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears has also been moved back to a 1:15 p.m (ET) start. Both games will still be televised on FOX.

Mother nature is going to definitely make things difficult this weekend with snow affecting these games. For those sitting at home who have fantasy pools or players, a sinking feeling just hit you and now you might have to change your fantasy football game plan.

The ground game for the Eagles might be used a lot more than expected, making DeSean Jackson, Donovan McNabb and Brett Celek’s fantasy value decrease. Meanwhile players like Frank Gore and believe it or not Leonard Weaver, who might be sitting on your fantasy bench for better options, will see a boost in value in our eyes for carries. The Bears-Ravens game shouldn’t affect fantasy points or players as much as you think, most of the top starters already involve the running backs. But what about the betting community? Are the Eagles really 9 point favorites now? Or the Ravens 10.5 over the Bears?

We’ll keep you posted.

Waiver Wire Sleepers Week 15Cheerleaders

Think just because the fantasy playoffs are starting or have already commensed, that your team is set can can’t be improved? Think again.

Depth chart changes and injuries can and will impact your roster until the season is over, and brutal match-ups can still be avoided by digging deep on the waiver wire and finding some late-season games. There are always some waiting to be discovered, and we did all the work, so all you have to do is decide which guys suit your fancy.

Worried about a receiver or quarterback facing the Panthers, Bills, or Raiders stingy pass defenses? Unsure about Jonathan Stewart going up against the Williams Wall? Read on for this week’s top players on the waiver wire, all still available in at least 50% of leagues:

Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers (Available in 59% of all leagues)

The guy is still out there, waiting to prove his worth, and people are still leaving him on the waiver wire. This marks at least the third straight week we’ve screamed to the top of our lungs, “Go out and get this guy!”.

Smith has done nothing but put up decent yardage, as well as at least two scores in his past four contests. His match-up with the Philadelphia Eagles could be tough this week, but after seeing what Eli Manning accomplished on Sunday night, we still like his chances.

Jason Campbell, QB, Washington Redskins (68%)

We were reluctant to attach ourselves to Campbell, but he’s offically turned it on, and quite possibly is making a strong case to remain the Skins’ franchise quarterback.

Campbell has at least 222 passing yards and seven touchdowns through the air in his past three games, and is moving the ball consistently. He has a nice match-up with a vulnerable

Cutler Needs Glasses
“I wouldn’t say he was trying to force the issue,” 49ers safety Mark Roman said of Cutler. “He was trying to make plays at a time when they needed a play to be made. We knew the ball was going to be in the air and we knew if we would be sound in our coverages we’d have opportunities.” - that’s just a nice way of saying you suck

Thursday Night Preview: Bears vs. 49er’s

CHICAGO BEARS vs. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS -3

49er’s coach Mike Singletary played 11 years for the Bears and was the voice and soul of a defense that carried the team to a Super Bowl win in 1985. There are a lot of ties between these teams, but nobody cares about anything but a win on Thursday night. Both teams are struggling and both feature promising rookie wideouts. 49er’s Michael Crabtree is establishing himself as Alex Smith’s most reliable target, while fans are just impressed to see the 2005 first overall pick do anything at all.

The Bears bowed down to Jay Cutler when he showed up in the off-season, but most fans knew the quarterback position wasn’t the only hole on this team. With countless injuries the Bears have looked flat on all sides of the ball. Briggs will need to blow up run blocking schemes to prevent Frank Gore from doing what he did to the Seahawks earlier this season, or it could be a long night.

How We See It:

Alex Smith’s Fantasy Value

Alex Smith’s Fantasy ValueAlex Smith's Fantasy Value

Alex Smith stepped in out of nowhere and almost rescued the San Francisco 49ers drowning offense last week, coming just short of a heroic comeback, falling to the Houston Texans 24-21. Smith excelled where Shaun Hill could not, as he came in after half-time and threw three touchdowns (all to Vernon Davis), and over 200 yards in a fury of offensive production. And while that’s just peachy, what the rest of the fantasy world is wondering is, was it a fluke, or can this kid finally play some ball?

Quite honestly, it’s going to be hard to say with a very tough match-up against the undefeated Indianapolis Colts in week eight. If Smith bombs, throws three picks, and the 49ers drop their third straight, does that mean he’s a fantasy dud? Not at all. Smith displayed great confidence, poise, and most of all, sound decision-making.

He showed he still has great chemistry with tight end Vernon Davis, and after a full week (now two weeks) or practicing with rookie receiver Michael Crabtree, his overall comfort level with his weapons and the offense is at an all-time high, and leaps and bounds better than what Hill had to offer. Does Smith

Surprisingly Good Fantasy Defenses

Surprisingly Good Fantasy DefensesSan Francisco 49ers

One of the most unusual subjects thus far in fantasy football is the amount of points D/STs are putting up, and the D/STs who are doing it.   In the past, the amount of points D/STs scored in fantasy football was similar to kickers.  Through the first four weeks of this season, this is all but untrue.  This season the top D/STs rank, in fantasy points, closer to receivers such as Reggie Wayne and Vincent Jackson (Non-PPR).  Is it the emphasis that defenses win championships?  Is it the bad quarterback play?  It could be what’s in the Kool-Aid, or should I say, Gatorade these defenses drink.  Whatever the answer may be there are definitely new teams at the top of the ranks.  This is the great thing about the NFL, you can go from worst to first in a matter of a year.

San Francisco 49ers If you are too young to remember him as a player, I’m sure you heard and saw  in last years press conference Mike Singletary’s intensity and tenacity.  Whether you’re outnumbered in a bar fight or need someone to lead a team that lacks discipline and respect, he’s THE man you want. His ability to turn around one of the worst teams in the NFL just by taking over the reins exemplifies his demand for respect. The troubling aspect to me about Mike Singletary is that people say he’s old school.  Come on, old school?  Tecmo Bowl couldn’t have been that long ago, right? Although he may be old school, this mix of young and old players on defense gains more and more confidence every week.  They have a great centerpiece in Patrick Willis who is having an MVP first half, leading his team in tackles (37), sacks (2.5), and interceptions (2).  Being in the NFC West, and playing the remaining majority of their schedule against offenses that rank at the top of giveaways and sacks allowed, will play a key role in the continued fantasy success of the 49ers D/ST.

New Orleans Saints Gregg Williams could run for mayor of New Orleans.  The quickness he has implemented in his defensive schemes and the ability to translate those
