Top 5 Destinations For LaDainian Tomlinson

LaDainian Tomlinson is a free agent and is in the process of finding a new team.  There are many teams within the league that would love to have him join their backfields.  Only problem is that Tomlinson has the power to dictate where he may end up.  Not only will he be looking for a legitimate Super Bowl contender to play for, he will also be looking to get paid.  This could be Tomlinson’s final chance to cash in on a good deal.  After taking a look at the teams that would be in need of his services, I decided to narrow the field down to five teams.

The Criteria: Potential Super Bowl contenders, a  need for a running back, and a desire for the team to sign LT to a contract to more than one year.

5) New York Jets – With the release of Thomas Jones the bulk of the workload will be distributed to Shonn Greene.   However, the team could use another solid back to pound the ball into the end zone and for short yardage purposes.  Leon Washington was re-signed, but he is more of a third down back and will be used a lot on special teams.  There have been reports of the possibility of Jones re-signing with the team, but he is going to be visiting with other teams lessening the likelihood of him going back to New York.

4) Pittsburgh Steelers – With Willie Parker testing free agency the Steelers are going to be looking for a backup running back for Rashard Mendenhall.  This is an overall solid team both on defense and offense.  Tomlinson would instantly improve the backfield situation for the Steelers and he would love playing for a team that would be willing to rely more on the run.

3) Green Bay Packers – The Packers are a team that is going to rely more on the pass than the run, but the addition of Tomlinson would give

LeSean McCoy – RB, Philadelphia Eagles
Beat writer Sheil Kapadia expects the Philadelphia Eagles to pursue a veteran complement to LeSean McCoy as opposed to drafting a backup. Grid-X= There’s no way the Eagles are going to burn a pick at running back in this years draft. The Eagles are in need of DB help along with LB help. A veteran RB signing is very possible, but with Leonard Weaver looking like the Hulk in green and the signing of CFL running back star Martell Mallett the Eagles are set at RB, despite what many might think. LeSean McCoy is very young and entered the draft at a very young age, his potential is huge.

Nnamdi Asomugha – CB, Oakland Raiders
Beat writer Rich Cimini believes the New York Jets could realistically be interested in trading for Nnamdi Asomugha, who is reportedly being dangled by the Raiders. Grid-X = We talked it over, and while the Jets are already very strong at CB, this isn’t the craziest rumor out there. In a year where money doesn’t seem to matter, why not go after the top DB and dominate against the pass? The Jets are in a conference with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Philip Rivers, etc. -take it down.

Brett Favre – QB, Minnesota Vikings
Vikings LB Ben Leber indicated on Tuesday that he had a “gut feeling” that Brett Favre will return for another season. Grid-X= Why the hell not? Seriously, this time around Favre is not a pity thing, he is a Super Bowl ringer. Favre’s ‘09 season 49ers.comwas above and beyond better than anyone could have predicted, and Vikings fans have never been closer to a Super Bowl in the last 15 years than they were in the last season with number 4 under center.

Julius Peppers – DE, Carolina Panthers
Citing a league source, Brian Selzer of ESPN has said that Philadelphia confirms that the Eagles “are a target of interest” for free agent Julius Peppers.

Brett Favre Can’t Quit Now…Can He?

The NFL season has been over for two weeks, so like any regular fan, I’ve started to wonder: Will Brett Favre be coming back?

Everyone in Minnesota is hanging on every possible detail that the media feeds us about Favre, telling us about his season statement on his official website, fans putting up advertisements on board, begging him to come back….but what Favre ultimately decides is out of our control.

What is in our control, however, is the ability to analyze, and use history as our friend in deciding how he would project if he does in fact return for the 2010 season, and what his absence would mean for the rest of the Minnesota offense if he didn’t.

If Favre does return (and I believe he will), many fantasy analysts will have mixed feelings, simply because Favre duplicating his amazing ration of 33/7 in touchdowns and interceptions, is, well, pretty unlikely (if not impossible).

Favre changed his ways for 16 games, and continued his magical play in a triumphant performance against the Dallas Cowboys, only to see his “vintage” gunslinger style to squeak it’s way back into his arm, costing the Vikings a chance at the Super Bowl.

Brett Favre To Retire?

Let’s face it, Brett Favre’s “interception heard round the world” has been ridiculed and dissected from every angle. It need not be done so in this article, as well.

Rather than regurgitate everything that took place in Sunday night’s exciting, albeit somewhat controversial NFC Championship, perhaps we should look to the future (and Favre’s). After all, when a team plays it’s last game of the season, what else is there to do?

But truly, this was more than just the “last game of the season” for Favre and this team. After facing constant scrutiny, Favre took the league by storm in Week Three, zipping a game-winning touchdown pass to Greg Lewis against the San Francisco 49ers.

From there, the Vikings went to 6-0, and eventually secured a first round bye and an NFC North division crown behind an impressive 12-4 finish.

That old guy still had something left, after all.

The icing on the cake was the four-touchdown performance in a 34-3 crushing over the Dallas Cowboys, as well as quite arguably Favre’s best season in his entire career. He topped 4,200 yards passing, threw 33 touchdowns, and tossed a career low seven interceptions. That, and he had a passer rating over 100 for the first time in his 19-year career.

However, after appearing in his second NFC Championship for the second time in three seasons (and it ending almost exactly the same), Favre is

Championship Weekend

How do I start without mentioning that Gridiron Experts is 5-0 with our free picks thus far in Money Where Your Mouth Is? In fact, I had called today’s games almost to a tee. All that aside, congrats to Colts and Saints fans; the perfect season didn’t happen but the Super Bowl is going down!

Thoughts and observations from today’s action:

  • Mark Sanchez will be a superstar in this league- The kid can play, and while he wasn’t given a huge work load, you can bet he will be a center piece the Jets will build around for years to come. What a pump and go with B. Edwards…glad  to see him not drop it.
  • Peyton Manning is an offensive encyclopedia of knowledge- I had mentioned before that he was like a second offensive coordinator on the sidelines. After the seeing the second half performance in comparison to the first few drives, it like night and day…wow.
  • Fumble-itis Vikings- The stats will break fans hearts. The Vikings had a huge overall gain in yards without even a touch in overtime. Something I noticed, or rather didn’t notice in this game: Jared Allen. His name wasn’t even mentioned by the commentators. The Saints however did an amazing job in shutting down one of the best pass rushers in the game.
  • Last drive luck- I may hear it from Saints fans, but in my opinion the pass interference call looked overthrown to me, while the catch that was reviewed looked like it hit the ground. You’ve got to be lucky sometimes, and these two plays were very much an act of faith in overtime.

Older And Wiser To Prevail? Vikings-Saints

Minnesota Vikings @ New Orleans Saints

Both teams have explosive offenses, led by experienced, accurate quarterbacks.

The difference between Drew Brees and Brett Favre? This is Brees’ second NFC Championship game, while this is Favre’s fifth.

Throw ego’s and measuring sticks to the side, because as important as both of these quarterbacks are to their respective teams, this game isn’t ending like everyone hopes it will. Don’t get me wrong, a shoot-out is very possible, but something tells me the more balanced team will end with the ball in their hands, and with a lead, rather than one of these teams winning in the final seconds.

Why? Because the key ingredients are in Minnesota’s favor .

True, they haven’t been running the ball well. Adrian Peterson found just 60 yards off of 24 carries against Dallas. Not what you like to see. Then again, the Cowboys were pretty solid against the run. New Orleans, not so much. Just look at the Cardinals first score; a 70-yard scamper by Tim Hightower. Just imagine what Peterson might be ready to do. And if you look at the other side of that argument, a ball control offense (if needed/wanted) favors the Vikings in every way.

The Saints, aside from a nice 46-yard run by Reggie Bush last week, simply can not run the ball effectively, and really haven’t been able to do so for the past six weeks. Just look at last week’s stats against the Cardinals: no one other than Bush averaged better than three yards per carry. On the defensive side of the ball, the Vikings can get to the quarterback with the best of them. In fact, they are the best. Minnesota led the league with 48 sacks in the regular season, and matched that season-long effort by getting to Tony Romo and sacking him six times last Sunday, while forcing two lost fumbles.

The Saints finished 15th in the league with 35 sacks.

This should tell us that Drew Brees, despite only getting sacked 20 times all season, will likely have his hands full. The final aspect, which is usually overrated, could very well come into play with two key performers making plays in clutch moments this season. Minnesota’s electric rookie, Percy Harvin, can make magic happen on kick returns when he’s not doing damage in the slot, while the Saints’ Reggie Bush is healthy and exploded for more than one game-changing play against the Cardinals.

There’s no denying the presence Drew Brees and the Saints offense has, but the odds are somehow stacked against them, even with the game being in their home stadium. The Vikings can run the ball and stop the run better, and they can get to the quarterback better than anyone in the league. Add Brett Favre to the mix, and you’ve got your answer.

Money Where Your Mouth Is Playoff Edition

This a column that puts our expertise to the test, as we show a couple of the bets that we are placing on specific games, or prop bets offered by the many sports books and casinos. Of course we are a fantasy football advisory, but we also take pride in our pick’em pool strategies. Our goal is to help you win pools & money, but if you can’t afford to place bets…don’t!

    Over “57″ points

This is the playoffs, and regardless of the outcome of the score in the fourth quarter, these teams will be firing. The Saints have not been the type of team to sit on a lead and drain the clock, so expect Drew Brees to continue hitting his team of receivers until the clock reads zero. As for the Cardinals, they have never relied on a running game and love to throw the ball. This game is being played in a dome, and thanks to a heavy passing offensive game plan by both teams the clock will barely move on plays that don’t work. I mean, if you’re talking about a three and out with the Jets or Ravens you get a couple running plays and maybe a short pass, which will chew away at the clock and make guessing the over/under that much harder. But with these teams, and the home run big play potential, it’s either going to be incomplete or a score.

The way I think about over/under scores is based on a break down of points per quarter. 57 points with the spread favoring the Saints by 7 means that Vegas and sportsbooks think this game will be 32-25 (Saints by 7, and adds to 57), which is about an average of 14 points total per quarter. With the explosive play ability of both teams it seems very reasonable that 2 touchdowns could happen in each quarter, throw in the odd turnover or special teams return and 57 points doesn’t seem too high.

    Minnesota Vikings -2.5

Brett Favre has more playoff experience in his pinky finger than Tony Romo and half of the Dallas Cowboys do combined. Dallas is the hot team after working their divisional rivals the Eagles in back to back weeks, but we’re starting to think the Cowboys aren’t as great as the Eagles were bad. After the dust has settled in Philly, the team that played in both those final games was made up of a lot of the bench warmers. The Eagles had 4 rookies starting last week, along with a back-up center and a decrepit linebacking core.

This week the Cowboys will face one of the most fierce defensive front four in the NFL. Jared Allen alone is a nightmare, and with a jumpy offensive line in a noisy stadium we see a self destruct button on the big Dallas O-line. Some of our experts have picked the Cowboys as an upset, but as far as safe bets go, you have to like the fact that a field goal at home with a week off is all you’ll need to win this one.

    New York Jets+ 7.5

Many sportsbooks are offering 7 points in this game, but we have seen 7.5. That half point is worth more than you think in this tight AFC battle. The Chargers are geared up for an offensive challenge, while the Jets know that if they can keep the game close, this one is very winnable. The x-factor in this game might be the fact that Rex Ryan is very familiar with the Chargers from his time in Baltimore, but the chess match of “I know he knows I know he knows” may result in overthinking everything to a point where a simple game of not turning the ball over and relying on the Jets run game to pick up yards might be good enough. We like the Jets and the points at 7.5

Superbowl Or Super Bust: Minnesota Vikings

Superbowl Or Super Bust: Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings were division winners and playoff contestants last season. With a powerful rushing attack and a strong, supportive defense, they only had one thing missing.

One addition, and they could start thinking Super Bowl.

After months of speculation, both from the media, from the players themselves, and the coaching staff, the Vikings had their “difference-maker” in mid-August.

Yes, the one and only, prima dona/future Hall of Famer; Brett Favre.

Favre’s addition had pre-wrapped expectations of a Super Bowl for Minnesota. He was supposed to be a game-manager that would come through in the clutch when needed, but would otherwise play second fiddle to the team’s true MVP, Adrian Peterson. However, after two blow-out wins over the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, Favre’s heroic arm was needed much sooner than Minnesota fans had expected.

    Nevertheless, the veteran gunslinger responded.

Despite a mediocre showing for much of the day in a Week Three battle at home against the San Francisco 49ers, Favre evaded the 49ers pass rush and zipped a 32-yard pass into the hands of a leaping Greg Lewis, injecting life into all of Minnesota. Vikings fans that were still on the fence about Favre had committed to the former Packer. Favre’s magic, dormant for much of 2008 while he played with the New York Jets, was back. Jared Allen muttered to himself before the dramatic heave, “Be Brett. Just once. Be Brett.”

Favre did just that, and continued to pick up the slack for a surprisingly ineffective Vikings rush attack, as he led Minnesota to a 6-0 start, the best start for any team Favre had led in his 19-year career.

Amidst arm and age concerns, Favre had placed the entire Minnesota offense on his broad, aging shoulders, and had instilled hope into the franchise that he in fact was the missing piece they were looking for.

Fast forward to Week 12, where Minnesota stood at 10-1, in complete control of their division, and needing to keep pace with the New Orleans Saints for home-field advantage. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Favre and the offense were splitting at the seams. Favre and Childress were
