NFL Trades: Picks For Players
It’s not often a NFL club can dump an unwanted player for anything these days, a once top prospect becomes a plead for a late round draft pick, but Either way here are a few back-ups that are making a move.

Browns Acquire Seneca Wallace

This trade isn’t anything to get too excited about, unless you write for a NFL site and say it’s going to happen. Our man, DC had mentioned that it was in Holmgrens style to steal away a back-up prospect just as he did when coming to Seattle ( Mock Draft Part 1 )

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Browns have struck a deal with the Seahawks for Wallace, who was drafted in 2003 by Seattle. No Details yet

Reggie Brown To The Buc’s

Eagles dumped a large contract on Monday after finally getting rid of a receiver that never panned out. WR Reggie Brown was not a good fit in the Andy Reid westcoast offense and was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a 6th round pick.

Brown is under contract through 2014. Per NFLPA records, he is due to receive a base salary of $1 million in 2010, $1.2 million in 2011, $1.6 million in 2012, $3 million in 2013, and $3.7 million in 2014.

S Kerry Rhodes to Cards

The Jets traded safety Kerry Rhodes to the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday for a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft and a seventh-rounder in 2011.

Lions Add CB Houston

After the Falcons lured away Dunte Robinson they decided to trade prospect CB Chris Houston. The Falcons receive in exchange for Houston, the Lions’ sixth-round pick. Also, the two teams will flip flop draft picks in the fifth round.

Detroit Lions Hungry For Change

Detroit Lions sign WR Burleson to five-year deal
Nate Burleson has played the last 7 seasons with the Seahawks and Vikings but has found a new home in Detroit signing a new 5 year deal worth an impressive $25 million dollars, with $11 million guaranteed. Detroit is trying to add another solid addition for their young quarterback, an in my opinion they might have found themselves a gem. Burleson was over shadowed by a few more high profiled wide receivers in this years free agency and have added a good 2nd option to play opposite Calvin Johnson.

Burleson has had some injury trouble over the years, playing only 1 game in 2007 and missing a few in 05, but overall his experience should be a great addition for the Lions.

Detroit Acquires DT Corey Williams
In a move that people will shrug their shoulders at, the Detroit Lions traded for a huge center piece to add to their defense. 29 year old Corey Williams is a big defensive tackle at 6′4 230 lbs, his addition could be lining up to the Detroit Lions 1 round draft pick soon, with all indications that Gerald McCoy or Ndamukong Suh will be selected by Detroit. This is a great step forward, if the Lions can beef up their run defense quickly the odds for a better season will not doubt improve. Detroit rank dead last in yards per game last season and 25th against the run.

No word yet on which pick the Lions had to give up, but rumors are it’s a for a late-round draft pick

More Detroit Lions News?
The Detroit Lions are also pursuing free agent defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch, who once played for coach Jim Schwartz.

Top 10 Fantasy Football Playoff Duds

How many folds, creases, and highlighted sections of your fantasy football magazine mentioned that you would put together a wicked fantasy team only to have a handful of blue chip players sell you out in the playoffs? If your fantasy league started it’s post season this week (most did) you’ve dedicated at least 30+ minutes of your work week to mentioning how bad you were robbed by your go-to fantasy players.

Gridiron Experts did it’s best to mention the fact that the Bears play tough against the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, or that you should weigh your options before starting the Steelers defense, but hey…we don’t have a crystal ball.

The following are fantasy football weekly regulars  that choked in week 14 and took your fantasy hopes down with their crappy performance.

10. Calvin JohnsonCalvin Johnson of the Lions
The Detroit Lions had a bad match-up week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens on the road, and the fantasy results for one of the most electrifying WR’s in the game was frustrating. With Culpepper under center nobody thought the Lions were going to steal a win, but scoring points shouldn’t have been that difficult. The Ravens have been burned all season against the pass, and with a deep target like Johnson fantasy owners refused to bench the talented receiver in hopes of getting some pity points. Instead Calvin Johnson had only 4 catches for 37 yards, making him our number 10 dud on the fantasy football letdown list.

9. Donald Driver

After taking over as the number one receiving target in Green Bay, Donald Driver has become a secret weapon for fantasy owners. His draft value at the start of the season has him now being called one of the best mid-round sleepers of the ‘09 season, but his performance crushed fantasy owners week 14. Driver, usually a go-to target, had only 2 catches for 11 yards against the Bears, a season low that fantasy football fans didn’t want to see.

8. Ben Worthlisberger (ouch)

The Steelers are done, and so are you if you started Roethlisberger against the Browns. When the schedule came out back in April, keeper league owners were laughing when they saw their first round fantasy playoff match-up, while others circled it as a great QB option as a sleeper. Big Ben played poorly on the road in Cleveland putting up only 201 passing yards. In week 6 against the Browns,

Fantasy playoffs are starting up in leagues all over the globe, and even if they aren’t, you still have a game or two with serious repercussions attached to them. You can either hit up the waiver wire, cross your fingers that your injured stars are healthy and ready to go, or go to your last resort: pick the right guy on your roster to stick into your starting line-up.

We’ve been doing it all season, showing you solid match-ups between two quality players, and giving you the best option to use each week.

The only difference this week is this article has a “Lesser of Two Evils” theme. Struggling to pick between two guys that have weak match-ups or haven’t been playing up to par? Allow us to shed some light on who might emerge from Week 14 with some solid production, even if it’s against all odds:

kevin_smithKevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions (@ BAL) VS. Matt Forte, RB, Chicago Bears (vs. GB)

There’s a good chance you haven’t heard Smith and Forte’s names being promoted too much in the past few weeks. Aside from a nice match-up last week against the Rams for Forte, both backs have been relatively quiet, and have endured turnovers from their franchise quarterbacks.

It won’t get any easier this week. Both the Ravens and Packers stop the run very well, and are almost guaranteed to hold both backs below 100 yards rushing. This means your only real chance at fantasy success this week is picking the guy that will either sneak his way to a touchdown, gain some yards on screen passes, or if you’re lucky, both.

Both backs have been doing some solid damage on screens over the past few weeks, but it’s an easy call as to who has the edge in the red-zone.

Verdict: Smith is a touchdown hawk if his offense can get him close enough, and considering we like Stafford’s chances a bit better to move the ball against a weak Baltimore secondary, rather than

Matthew Stafford Makes “Real” NFL Debut

In our Week 11 picks we joked about how this game between the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns was going to be a snooze-fest, but with Matthew Stafford’s late amazing comeback finish and 5 touchdown performance, the 30-40 Lions fans that went to the game must have had a blast.

Why is Matt Millen an Analyst?

To those of you who may not know, Matt Millen was President, CEO, and GM for the Detroit Lions from 2000 to 2008.  During that span, Detroit went 31-97, their worst eight-year record since WWII, and lost nine or more games in each season.  Just as horrible as those stats are, Millen also had arguably the worst first-round draft picks in NFL history (Charles Rodgers, Joey Harrington, Mike Williams).  Like a friend of mine said, “there are probably armchair QB’s out there that could’ve done a better job for the Lions.”  Even as a player he didn’t post great numbers, he went to one Pro-Bowl (although he did win four rings with some great teams).  With all that being said, how can this noticeably terrible NFL team executive be a football analyst on ESPN and the NFL Network?

Listening to Matt Millen analyze football correlates with Don King giving a speech on “Exemplifying Moral Values When Managing Professional Boxers.” No, I don’t have a personal grudge against Millen.  No, I’m not a Detroit Lions fan.  Yes, I do give people the benefit of the doubt, but for some reason, every Monday night when Matt Millen speaks all I hear are the sounds from the Charlie Brown cartoon “Wah, Wah, Wah, Wah.”  This doesn’t happen when Steve Young or Stuart Scott speak, although occasionally I hear those sounds when John Gruden aka Mr. Intense aka Chucky goes on and on about jokers and special mouth pieces.  Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a big fan of previous MNF analyst Emmitt Smith, but why not hire a flamboyant, humorous, football knowledgeable analyst like Neon Deion or Michael Irvin?  ESPN had to have a list of other candidates out there with better resumes than Matt Millen.

Stafford vs. Sanchez: Did The Lions Make A Mistake?

Matthew_Stafford_GridironexpertsStafford vs. Sanchez: Did The Lions Make A Mistake?

For those of you that don’t know, Matthew Stafford was selected first overall by the Detroit Lions in this year’s draft; Mark Sanchez was taken 6th overall by the New York Jets (moving up 11 spots to select him). One crucial reason that the Lions opted to go with Stafford was that Sanchez was relatively inexperienced, with only one full college season under his belt. These two young quarterbacks are impressing so far this season, and they appear to have the potential to keep up this success, so I would like to table a debate for Grid-X readers: who will have more success as their respective careers continue to progress?

As pick number one, Stafford will get the honors of being evaluated first. Stafford had a very impressive college career; his only weaknesses were occasional lapses in judgement and needing to improve his accuracy. At the pro level Stafford seems to be developing more with each start, however I’m hard pressed to say that he has been fantastic. He seems to be progressing rapidly and looks quite poised in the
