What’s Plax up to These Days?

Plaxico Burress was jailed in 2009 for possession of a firearm. For those of you who are unsure of the scenario, not only did he possess a firearm, he shot himself in the leg with it inside the Latin Quartier night club. It’s been a while since the Gridiron crew has even mentioned him, so let’s take a sneak peek into what’s going on in his life.

Prior to the Super Bowl many of us witnessed a CBS special interview of Plaxico led by Bill Cohwer, in which Plax expressed his remorse for his actions, not only for himself, but also for the problems he had caused the Giants organization.  He describes his actions as a “selfish decision” and goes onto say that in the in the future he “wants to be a better brother, friend, and football player”.

More recently, this past January Plaxico was just denied a work release by the New York Department of Correctional Services. Under this rationale the corrections department chose not release him: “At no time did you report this incident to local law enforcement. As such, it is determined that you must serve a greater portion of your sentence prior to consideration for potential participation in the temporary release

Safety Antrel Rolle Signs With Giants

Antrel Rolle didn’t last long on the open market with many suitors interested in this freshly cut Cardinal. The New York Giants were determined to improve their defense, improve the area in which offense’s were exploiting. The safety spot was torched last year as the big passing play killed any momentum the Giants could put together.

Sources point to a five-year deal worth $37 million, which is an NFL record for a safety (today records for many positions were handed out) Rolle gets $15 million guaranteed and $22.5 million over the first three years.

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 2)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on a NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players that can step in now that they have a year under them, and the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft. So here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

Read the First Article: Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

11) Denver Broncos Team Needs: DT | DE | WR | QB

Strange to see Denver this high on the board considering the fast start to the season with new coach Josh McDaniel’s. The Broncos completely fell apart in the final month of the season, losing 4 games in a row, including losses to the Chiefs and Raiders.

The Broncos will likely try to improve their running defense through free agency and could target an offensive playmaker with pick 10. The Brandon Marshall trade rumors have started to fire up, causing many mock draft experts to target the top wide receiver landing in Denver.

Demaryius Thomas is high in our books, but a broken foot could hurt his stock value, making Dez Bryant a strong favorite. There is also a chance that if a top QB is available at 10 the Broncos could fill the shoes left by Jay Cutler. Either way the Broncos are sitting strong at pick 10 to take the best player available without the huge rookie money at the top of the draft.

12) Miami Dolphins Team Needs: WR | LB | SS

The Dolphins had injuries to key players in ‘09, but did an amazing job filling position spots. Players stepped up week after week to fill roles unlike any other team. The Dolphins are a diamond in the rough; if they can stay healthy and add a couple playmakers, this team could challenge for the AFC East division title.

This young team is a year older and wiser now, and will try to grow on the accomplishments of the ‘09 season. Personally Gridiron Experts would like to see this pick used on the offensive side of the ball, and we’re sure fans would agree. Adding a WR that can stretch the field would be ideal for this running attack, yet the team has enough rookies, and leadership would be nice as well.

We think trading this pick to a team like Arizona for a smart, tough WR like Anquan Boldin would be a great move. At 29 the trade wouldn’t be pick for player, but if a mid round pick came with Boldin, the Dolphins would walk away happy. Gridiron Experts sees pick 12 the first traded away pick of the draft, either down to gain more picks, or to another team for a veteran leader. The Dolphins are already a young team and need to add talent and wisdom now.

13) San Francisco 49er’s Team Needs: OT | WR | SS | KR

The only thing the 49er’s need to do this offseason is cut Takeo Spikes. Why? Because the veteran linebacker is a playoff curse. In the 12 years that Takeo Spikes has been in the NFL he has never been a part of a team that has made the playoffs…wow!

The 49er’s don’t really have any massive needs on the team, despite what some may say about QB Alex Smith.

Alex Smith was solid down the stretch and should have done just enough to have earned another opportunity to start for the 49er’s next season. There is a chance that Smith could succeed and lead this team into the post season if a smart offensive system can be installed that this young club can get behind.  Keep in mind we’re being optimistic, as newly hired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye II doesn’t come with an impressive resume. Raye has never run an offense that has ranked high in any category that mattered, and his hiring makes no sense in the direction the

Begin The NFL Cuts

Begin The NFL Cuts

  • Antonio Pierce was let go by the New York Giants after 5 seasons on Thursday. The 31 year old linebacker was a part of a very pathetic defense that will being under the microscope this off-season. Pierce missed the final seven games of the season with a bad foot, but age and maybe being the scape-goat has forced the Giants to move on. Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan and defensive line coach Mike Waufle were fired after the season so this might be the beginning of a defensive spring cleaning for the Giants.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars have let go of wide receiver Torry Holt, LT- Tra Thomas and DT-Rob Meier in hopes of shaking up a young team. Holt caught 51 passes for 722 yards with the Jaguars last season, adding to his impressive 920 career receptions for 13,382 yards and 74 touchdowns. These players releases aren’t really big news, age has become a factor for Tra Thomas and Rob Meier while Holt is baggage that can be filled with a young project

MNF Preview: Giants vs. Redskins

Week 15 is definitely proof that you shouldn’t take any team in the NFL for granted. The New York Giants are eager to try and bounce back after a hard loss to the Eagles last week. The Giants are the only team in the hunt in the NFC wildcard race, and with the Redskins the only team in the NFC East not looking to head to the post season, you can bet they’ll want to play spoiler.

The Washington Redskins are playing solid football despite rumors of the holiday shopping for a new head coach. The Skins rank high in many categories on defense, including the leagues toughest pass defense only allowing on average 188 passing yards per game. Washington’s injuries have the team running with a roster full of backups these days, but excellent performances against the Cowboys and Saints show the real depth and talent of this team.

The keys to victory for the Giants:

Establish the run early

- The Giants are facing a stout defensive unit, and the effort has to be put forward in forcing a ground game. If a running game is put together, the Redskins will have to show respect by dropping down safeties which should then set up the play-action pass. Brandon Jacobs is having an off year (to say the least) and this entire game will revolve around moving the chains. If Manning is stuck in a lot of 3rd and longs on the road Monday night, things could get ugly.

- Field position is important! The noodle leg kicking of the Giants have given opponents great field position all season. The G-Men need to play smart, sound special teams, and avoid stupid penalties.

The keys to victory for the Skins:

- Stretch the field early. The more Jason Campbell is willing to fire a couple deep balls down field, the more the Giants DB’s back off in fear of the big play. The weak link for the G-Men has to be the safeties, and if the Skins don’t recognize that they deserve to lose.

- Use screens and quick outs. New York will over compensate their poor secondary with extra heat off the line. If Washington can handle the pressure, this game is winnable.

Eagles vs. Giants: Game Of The Year?

Game Of The Year?

-Trick plays, a two point conversion, blocked XP, Turnovers, and so much more…

Weekend too short? Stuck holiday shopping on a Sunday? Either way, Sunday evening usually means an easy going night around the tube, searching for something good on. For us NFL freaks, it means fantasy football playoffs and being glued to the T.V., screaming for big plays, high scores, and touchdowns…and the Eagles at Giants game delivered.

Regardless of the winner of this game, the entertainment factor was huge, Al Davis “Huuuge”. The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants were playing playoff football in December, and in my opinion get the nod for the best NFL game of the year thus far. This will be the one they replay all summer, this will be the one that Eagles fans hang their hat on, this is the one that sees dollar signs with the ratings for NBC.

After a quick start, the Philadelphia Eagles found themselves with a 14 point lead that they carried for most of the game, but the Giants refused to give up. In fact on paper the G-Men had 512 total yards in tonight’s grudge match, but mistakes were costly.  Eli and company couldn’t overcome a few miscues from the first half and played catch-up football for most of the game. Their biggest brain fart was punting the ball to Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, a young but talented lethal weapon for the Boo-Birds. D-Jack had a 72 yard punt return for a score along with 172 receiving yards and a touchdown that came from a bomb pass that hushed the New York crowd after a productive offensive drive.

The Giants will hang their heads low after this loss, but they really shouldn’t.  New York had the ability to move the ball up and down the field with ease, and were very impressive despite falling short in the end. Eli Manning was a hair shy of 400 passing yards and had 3 nice TD passes in a smart, productive game. The local media of course will not focus on that, and instead will have catchy headlines like “Slip and Slide” or “Butter Fingers” for an embarrassing fumble and turnover that came from Eli sliding head first and losing  the ball.

Turnovers were a major factor,  but the nail in the coffin had to be the Eagles 91 yard touchdown drive that ate up 7 plus minutes of the clock, which included zero third downs and was capped off by a McNabb two point conversion.

Fantasy Football Coin Flip

Fantasy playoffs are starting up in leagues all over the globe, and even if they aren’t, you still have a game or two with serious repercussions attached to them. You can either hit up the waiver wire, cross your fingers that your injured stars are healthy and ready to go, or go to your last resort: pick the right guy on your roster to stick into your starting line-up.

We’ve been doing it all season, showing you solid match-ups between two quality players, and giving you the best option to use each week.

The only difference this week is this article has a “Lesser of Two Evils” theme. Struggling to pick between two guys that have weak match-ups or haven’t been playing up to par? Allow us to shed some light on who might emerge from Week 14 with some solid production, even if it’s against all odds:

kevin_smithKevin Smith, RB, Detroit Lions (@ BAL) VS. Matt Forte, RB, Chicago Bears (vs. GB)

There’s a good chance you haven’t heard Smith and Forte’s names being promoted too much in the past few weeks. Aside from a nice match-up last week against the Rams for Forte, both backs have been relatively quiet, and have endured turnovers from their franchise quarterbacks.

It won’t get any easier this week. Both the Ravens and Packers stop the run very well, and are almost guaranteed to hold both backs below 100 yards rushing. This means your only real chance at fantasy success this week is picking the guy that will either sneak his way to a touchdown, gain some yards on screen passes, or if you’re lucky, both.

Both backs have been doing some solid damage on screens over the past few weeks, but it’s an easy call as to who has the edge in the red-zone.

Verdict: Smith is a touchdown hawk if his offense can get him close enough, and considering we like Stafford’s chances a bit better to move the ball against a weak Baltimore secondary, rather than

Zorn’s Headset Not Even Plugged In

jim_Zorn_RedskinsJim Zorn is the NFL’s first male cheerleader for the Washington Redskins.

The NFL does an amazing job capturing every angle with dozens of cameras each and every week. The are different angles on the field to help with replay of amazing big hits, catches, and touchdowns, not to mention the cameras on the sidelines that show us a little cheerleader side-boob as we go to commercial, but when it comes to the coach cam and the Washington Redskins, networks have to be a little creative when showing viewers the decision making on the sidelines.

Jim Zorn, currently the head coach of the Washington Redskins, was brought in as a creative mind to help move the team in the right direction, but after a poor start this season Zorn has been stripped of all play calling duties for the team. After a couple weeks people assumed Zorn would take on more of the smaller details on the sidelines like talking to players, coordinators etc. While rumors are that all 3rd and short situations are his (only) responsibility, the camera says otherwise.

Last week a number a quick sideline shots of Zorn were of him standing around and looking like he was waiting for a bus. Zorn would look down, maybe at his watch, then look along the sidelines as if he was waiting for something….maybe a pink slip? Watching last weeks game against the Eagles was hilarious as his presence, or lack thereof, was as if he was just going through the motions for a paycheck. One can only wonder if his headset was tuned to talk radio or the weather report.

Seeing Jim Zorn swallow his pride standing their like the living dead reminded me of an old Seinfeld episode where George continues to show up for work, refusing to step down, despite everyone hating him.

If it was me, I wouldn’t even try to hide it, I’d have a gameboy, lawn chair, and beer in hand, maybe wearing the opposing teams’ jersey.
