NFL Trade: Antonio Cromartie to the Jets

Breaking News: Jason La Canfora with his nerdy classes and wisdom has sniffed out the first NFL trade news of Free agency. The San Diego Chargers have looked to have traded CB Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets for a 2011 conditional draft pick. Pick looks to be around a 2nd/3rd pick next year

NFL Truth & Rumors

  • Darren Sproles Isn’t Going Anywhere
Leaving it to the dramatic end, San Diego has decided to keep their running back by placing the maximum first and third round tender on Sproles Thursday.
  • Lito Let Go
Lito Sheppard and the New York Jets are finished working together as of Thursday. After a strong year together the cornerback played one season for the Jets, after being acquired from Philly at last year’s NFL draft. The release makes sense to the rumors floating around the league the Jets have been interested in trading for a corner.
  • Pick Up Your Super Bowl Ring at the Door
New Orleans Saints plan to release DE Charles Grant on Friday. The move is a small hint to what the Saints might be looking for in the NFL Draft come April.
  • Antrel Rolle’s Out Of A Job
Trying to save money (in a cap-less year?) the Arizona Cardinals have released starting safety Antrel Rolle. The move is not one we thought would happen without the word “trade” attached to Rolle’s name, but apparently the Cardinals have no plans for Rolle at all, and wanted to be rid of the situation.
  • Redskins Spring Cleaning
Guard Randy Thomas, Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El and kick returner Rock Cartwright were just a few names of the Washington Redskins that will be looking for work this season. Washington is getting a complete makeover as solid backups also heading out include: Cornerback Fred Smoot, defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, running back Ladell Betts and backup quarterback Todd Collins. 10 players in total were let go.

5 Underrated Free Agents Worthy Of Respect

The free agent market hits us like a tidal wave of possibilities. Fans are eagerly waiting and wondering how their team is going to make an upgrade quickly, while others want to know the affects it will have on fantasy football. The following is a quick list of players I think are flying under the radar who could have a huge year with a change of scenery.

#5 WR Antonio Bryant

Bryant had an amazing season in 2008, racking up 1,248  receiving yards and 7 touchdowns, but was franchise tagged last year to play on a team he wanted out of. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were desperate to keep this unhappy wide receiver around for another year, but now they are letting him loose. Before playing two seasons in Tampa, Bryant bounced around the league, playing in Cleveland and in San Fransisco after the three seasons in Dallas in which he was drafted from.

At 28, this receiver is a lot more in tune with what he wants and where he thinks could be the best possible destination for his skills. Bryant still has a few more good years left in him, and a team looking to add an instant starter could land themselves a great wide receiver weapon.

4) DE Aaron Kampman

I am not Kampman’s doctor, but if the light is green, teams would be stupid not to gamble on this sack monster. Aaron suffered a knee injury earlier in the year, forcing him to miss time and play somewhat average football for the Packers. If you look at the three previous years in

NFL Spring Cleaning Starts Early
You know the expression: One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure. It works in the NFL too, as teams continue to clean house like never before.

It seems if you were a 70’s baby you’re looking for work this year in the NFL. Old running back releases are nothing new, but some teams are getting rid of anything that has a heavy price tag and/or bad memory of a losing season.

San Diego Chargers: Letting go of LT is not much of a shocker, (although it will be strange to see him in another jersey color) what is strange is the soon to be loss of Darren Sproles, a player that was thought to be part of the future. It won’t be too hard to predict the Chargers draft needs in about a week, but if a replacement isn’t found that can be looked at as an addition, then why let quality players walk in a cap-less year.

Buffalo Bills: The Bills informed free agent WR Terrell Owens, WR Josh Reed, and DE Ryan Denney that they will not be offered contracts before March 5 , therefor making the Bills that much crappier. The one thing that we see after years of being die hard NFL fans here at Gridiron Experts is that people can’t wrap their brains around the fact that these are people and respond differently under different coaching units. Everybody hates change, but a new regime can do amazing things. New coaches are always quick to paint the walls a different color, but T.O has still got talent and played a fairly “media-quite” year. Giving up on arguably the teams best receiver is a mistake.

New York Jets: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Thomas Jones will not restructure his contract, and he’s expected to be released within a week. Jackpot for Shonn Greene fantasy owners who are getting a faster keeper than expected.  Thomas Jones on the other hand shouldn’t be rolled in the same blanket with Westbrook & Tomlinson, he had a good season last year and could be a free agent steal for a team.

Denver Broncos: A source has confirmed that coach Josh McDaniels hasn’t spoken face-to-face with Brandon Marshall since the end of the season. I’m not going to play the fiddle for Marshall, but take a page out the Eagles offseason playbook and make it look like he’s not dead in the water. The best franchises can blow a smoke screen of lies that even their mothers will fall for. Make it look like he isn’t a massive headache and that maybe it’s just a bad chemistry thing, otherwise teams will play hard ball and wait for you to release that canker sore, thereby losing a chance at draft picks.

Philadelphia Eagles: Speaking of smart franchises (expect when it comes to a Super Bowl) the Eagles are very clever in their dealings off the field, and should walk into this years draft with extra picks thanks to the signing of Vick.

We wrote an article when Mike Vick had signed last summer ( Mike Vick Buy Low Sell High) that fits well into the current situation. but the 1.5 million that the Birds are willing to eat just to drag trading talks on longer might just back fire. If more unexpected players continue to get released the market for a QB could go down, especially with the young rookies and all their new sparkle and shine wowing those who might do the math that a new talent is better than an old jail-bird (zing).

Currently the going market for quarterbacks is weak ,with Daunte Culpepper and Kyle Boller topping the lists, but other back up quarterbacks are probably being looked at and the Eagles need to find a home fast for this overratted QB before the water boils over. McNabb has a year before he’s gone, Kolb is the future, don’t get greedy and miss out on dealing a player your not using.

Chargers Release LaDainian Tomlinson

San Diego Chargers Release LaDainian Tomlinson

This is a shocker, no trade, no draft picks coming San Diego’s way, just released.

Many people around the league saw this coming but it still sounds to weird to say… LaDainian Tomlinson was released.

“He’s a future Hall of Famer,” G.M. A.J. Smith said. “My only regret is that he leaves without a Super Bowl ring.” No Ring, but L.Tomlinson did rush for 12,490 yards in nine seasons and rushed for 138 touchdowns in his 9 year career in San Diego.

Talk about adding a big name into the already huge number of free agents. Tomlinson may be getting up there in age, but for a team on the verge of making the Super Bowl push, LT is worth adding in a no cap year.

You have to figure a team with a lack of a running game and goal line weapon could add him. Teams that could be interested in my opinion: Packers, Broncos, Texans, Eagles is Westbrook has to retire, Redskins and maybe the Patriots

This will put a smile (and maybe a tear) on the face of a Saints fan, while stinging a Colts fan at the exact same time…as for everyone else, we all say the same thing to ourselves quietly under our breath: “next year”…

What the hell is this? -LOL
LaDainian Tomlinson must have discovered acid in his time off with the Chargers bye week. Some are calling this video a fake, but either way it’ll be the talk of the week! I expect a couple touchdown celebrations to poke fun at this stupid cheesy video this weekend.

X-Mas Preview & Pick: Chargers-Titans

San Diego Chargers vs. Tennessee Titans

The San Diego Chargers clinched the AFC West title in Week 15, and are now seeking the second seed in the AFC for a first-round playoff bye. So for those who think that the Chargers have nothing to play for and will be drinking rum & eggnog on the sidelines, you’re wrong. The Titans are fighting to stay alive in the AFC wild-card race and hope to treat their fans to a Christmas victory. At 7-7, Tennessee must win out, and need help from other 7-7 teams to lose, but there is a chance for this once 0-6 team to actually make the playoffs.

The keys to victories for the Chargers:

Double team Chris Johnson on every play. It seems redundant but the Titans entire offense revolves around this amazing running back. Chris Johnson is averaging 123.6 yards per game rushing and is also Tennessee’s leading receiver with 44 receptions for 446 yards. A Linebacker and Safety need to be spying on this kid at all times.

Defensive redzone shut down. The Chargers are an excellent defensive unit that can get to you on any down, but lately opponents have been able to put up points on them while around the 20’s. In the last 27 attempts the Chargers have allowed 12 touchdowns and 10 field goals. Most of the Chargers wins have been very close, and against a powerful desperate Titans squad the Chargers will have to lock it up if they want to continue on their winning streak.

The keys to victories for the Titans:

Get creative on offense. We all know who’s going get the ball on every down, so change it up and keep the defense guessing. Vince Young is really growing into a leader at the quarterback position, and even if the Titans win the next two games there’s no definite playoff appearance. The Titans need to show the fans that regardless of how this season is to play out that this team will be an all around powerhouse in the league next year, not just a one man wrecking crew.

Avoid Mistakes. Deep passes and big plays are the name of the game for the Chargers offense, and if the Titans find themselves watching a rainbow pass go over their heads to one of San Diego’s giant wide receivers, it’s lights out. The Titans need to get to Rivers in the pocket and avoid giving him time to make the big play.

Our Thoughts:

While this game looked to be a wash a couple months ago when the Titans were a terrible at 0-6, it now seems like an extra gift under the tree. This game should be closer than many people think, even with the Chargers a surprising underdog by 3 points, but we think their offense is just too great to overcome even on Christmas. The Titans will keep it close until maybe around the the second half before the Chargers take over and run up the score. Gridiron Experts likes the Chargers by 7.

Gridiron Experts Power Rankings

1. Indianapolis Colts (14-0) – Tried, tested and true. The Colts are not getting the same respect that the Patriots got the year they went 16-0. While New England’s perfect (regular) season racked up points at will, even embarrassing teams long after the game was out of reach, the Colts play tight, hard fought football in a competitive division that is arguably one of the leagues toughest. Indianapolis is quietly putting together a perfect season that has hopes for a Super Bowl victory ending, not showboating records in the history books. No gimmicks, no flashy records, just wins.

2. San Diego Chargers (11-3)-  The Chargers are on a 9 game winning streak and look to roll into the playoffs with maybe even more momentum than Indianapolis has. The Chargers have overcome a shaky start to the season and have the confidence to out-shoot anyone. While Peyton Manning gets all the glory the Chargers offense has just as many weapons that can run up the score, which could lead to a great AFC showdown.

3. New Orleans Saints (13-1)- Gridiron Experts doesn’t do weekly power rankings, mainly due to teams like the Colts and Saints never making  any change at the top, but this week we’re knocking the Saints down a peg. Offensive powerhouse…yes, but also very lucky. The Saints should have lost to the Redskins, and played a sub-par game against the Falcons without Michael Turner or Matt Ryan. This team can rip anyone apart with it’s explosive offense, but the defense is only average at best, ranking in the middle of the pack in many categories including 25th against the pass.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (10-4)- A 5 game winning streak that includes two come from behind victories, even without a guy who used to be their entire offense: Brian Westbrook. DeSean Jackson is McNabb’s new favorite target, and the defense is only playing at a sub-par level. The best is yet to come for a team that flourishes this time of year.

5. Minnesota Vikings (11-3)- Gridiron Experts had mentioned in our last power rankings that we saw a rough winter ride for a team that is overusing their veteran quarterback, and who are not proven as a road team in the cold. Of course we did pick the Vikings last week against the Panthers, but games against the Bears and
