Chiefs Sign Jones

Kansas City Chiefs have signed free-agent RB Thomas Jones to a two year deal. The 31 year old ex-New York Jet ran for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2009. This move should add that much needed punch in the back field for the Chiefs.

Say Goodbye Mr. Anderson

Only one day after the Browns acquired backup Seneca Wallace in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, Derek Anderson gets released. The 26 year old Anderson has spent 5 up and down seasons with the Browns after being snagged off of the waivers in 05. With Brady Quinn looking to get the chance to become the full time starter in Cleveland and Wallace the ace in the whole if things go wrong, Anderson was dead weight.

Broncos Super Size

Trying to improve on an average defensive line the Denver Broncos have signed DE Jarvis Green and, DT Jamal Williams. While both players are huge in size the expectations haven’t always been filled, making todays signings not the end all solution to the defensive line…just some much needed depth.

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on an NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players who can step in now that they have a year under them; the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft, so here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

1) St. Louis Rams Team Needs: DT | QB | OT | CB | WR

The Rams really can’t screw this up. There are so many needs on this team that no matter whom they are able to grab in free agency, a blue chip player will be added to this team in the first round. Everyone is preaching about Ndamukong Suh, but the Rams have so much already invested on the defensive line that trading down a couple spots could really pay off with adding more talent quickly. A trade that could drop the Rams down just 5-6 spots is worth its weight in gold.

Mike Vick would be a great fit for this club since the Rams play in a dome, but the Eagles “no trade until the pre-season” smoke screen means the price is not cheap. Right now we’d say unload DE L. Little to the Eagles for Vick, and try to steal a couple of Philly’s late round picks, then grab Suh at pick one. Like we said, the end result is hard to mess up with the top pick in the draft, but teams do it all the time. The good news is there is so much offensive and defensive talent on the board this year that we’d be amazed if the Rams couldn’t improve on their 2 win season.

2) Detroit Lions Team Needs: DE | LB | CB …Anything On Defense

The Lions added a couple good defensive pieces last year with SS Louis Delmas and DT Sammie Lee Hill, but they need more. It’s unlikely that any of these bottom feeder teams are going to lure away an elite unrestricted free agent, so the Detroit Lions best bet is to simply take the best defensive player available. Another top key to this offseason for the Lions would be re-signing Larry Foote, who didn’t play as bad as his surrounding cast last year (70 tackles and 2 sacks). Re-signing Foote and maybe CB Williams James are the Lions top priorities in the next couple weeks.

3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Needs: DT | DE |LB | OL

The Buccaneers had the NFL’s worst rushing defense last year, allowing an average of 158.2 yards per game on the ground. Fans can say what they want about needing offense, but they’re in a division with Carolina’s J. Stewart and D. Williams, Falcons Michael Turner  and the Saints offensive attack. Pressure on the QB and stopping the run are big needs this offseason. DT Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma would be a great fit for the Bucs, but if Tampa can somehow add depth through free agency they would benefit from adding some kind of a pass rusher or one of the

NFL 2009’s Worst Personnel Decisions

NFL 2009’s Worst Personnel Decisions

In the off-season each team makes moves in the effort of strengthening their team. Some of them are blockbuster deals (Albert Haynesworth), while others go unnoticed (Jeff Garcia). With the 2009 season at a wrap, here’s a look at some of the worst personnel decisions that specific teams have made. Some players don’t succeed due to injury, some due to coaching ineptitude, and the others simply due to their poor performance or a combination of these factors. Whatever the reason, I have compiled my list for you.

The Kansas City Chiefs lead off this list for us with the initial acquisition and subsequent signing of quarterback Matt Cassel. On November 14th the Chiefs signed Cassel to a 6 year 63 million dollar contract. In theory this was a good move as he was tagged by the Patriots and would have made much more of an impact on the cap in 2009 for the Chiefs. On the field Cassel showed some instances of brilliance but also showed signs of a quarterback who was clearly playing in a superior system the previous season. I expect the carousel at quarterback to keep rotating for the Chiefs in the next few seasons, but it was a good try, hence why they rest at the top of the list.

I obviously can’t not mention Terrell Owens’ name on this list, although when it was all said and done T.O. didn’t have the worst season: 55 grabs for 829 yards and 5 touchdowns. Owens has had worse seasons, 1999 with the 49ers to be exact, so I’m hard pressed to push him lower down on this list. I mentioned coaching ineptitude in the introduction, and this was specifically what I was speaking of. All of Owens’ receptions, yards, and touchdowns came at inopportune times; for example his 197 yard 1 touchdown performance in a loss to the Jags, or on the contrary his 44 total combined yards against the Jets.  Owens never seemed to be the go to guy for bills QB’s, and when a player of his calibre is brought in he must.

Jamarcus Russell is, for now at least, not the answer at QB in Oakland; if you still have faith, shelving it might be the best thing for your emotions. That being said, the signing of Jeff Garcia was an excellent move for the

Perfect Strangers: Chiefs Cut Larry Johnson

Perfect Strangers: Chiefs Cut LarryPerfect Strangers: Chiefs Cut Larry Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs officially cut ties with Larry Johnson, a move clearly accepted by both sides. The Chiefs have been inching toward moving on from Johnson for the past two seasons, and Johnson hasn’t been happy in Kansas City for some time now. The team avoided a major distraction in the locker room and through the press by unloading Johnson now, and also gave their younger, more talented backs, Jamaal Charles and Kolby Smith, more opportunities to prove themselves.

Only extremely running back-starved teams will take a look at Johnson, as his attitude could mess with a contender’s chemistry. However, many of his problems offensively this season stemmed from a shaky pass offense and poor blocking, so there’s a solid chance he gets picked up somewhere. Some teams with injury issues or less than stellar play at the position that may become interested are the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans, Green Bay Packers, and the Cleveland Browns.

New England has a reputation for taking in both sketchy characters as well as veterans that the outside public often views as washed up or over the hill. Johnson is 29 and is closer to the end of his career than he probably would like to admit, but behind New England’s offensive line, he could cause Patriots fans to have flashbacks of Corey Dillon. Well, sort of.

Perfect Strangers: Chiefs Cut LarryIt appears that the Laurence Maroney experiment is working for the Patriots right now, however, with Fred Taylor’s return still a possibility, it doesn’t look like LJ coming to New England is in the cards.

It’s far more likely that a cellar dwelling team like the Browns give him a shot over their own aging veteran, Jamal Lewis, or a middle of the pack team like the Seahawks or Packers could take one last try at upgrading over their mediocre running back corps.

ESPN Shop

The Seahawks have stood idly by as Julius Jones has waffled in his own disgusting mediocrity, while the Packers have been held hostage by Ryan Grant’s indecisive cuts and inconsistent field vision for the past year and a half.

Regardless of where he goes, Johnson has little to no value, unless he has solid weapons around him, and an elite offensive line blocking for him, -because if there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that giving Larry Johnson 20+ carries does not necessarily mean elite production.

NFL Chopping Block

NFL Chopping Block- Who’s on the way out?

The trade deadline is the 20th, and there is a lot of speculation surrounding several bottom-of-the-barrel teams, and for good reason.

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly at least discussing trading Terrell Owens, their one-year free agent splash, while the Browns have had to fight off rumors about parting ways with former franchise quarterback Brady Quinn, and star return man Josh Cribbs.

There are eight teams that are close to throwing their season away.

Here’s a look at all eight of those teams, a trade-bait suggestion or two, and some analysis to think about as we head toward the October 20th NFL trade deadline.

Carolina Panthers (2-3)steve-smith

They finally got a win last week against the Washington Redskins, but even that wasn’t very convincing. They’re in a division with two very solid teams in front of them, and don’t have much breathing room. Like it or not, it’s probably best to start thinking about 2010.

Trade Julius Peppers and/or Steve Smith.

They franchised Peppers, so they know he’s as good as gone either way; now is the time to get what they can for him. Just about any contending team out there will at least express some interest. However, considering the franchise tag, everyone knows the asking price can’t be as high as Carolina wishes it could be. Look for the Denver Broncos to be involved, as well as anyone who wouldn’t mind giving up a high pick or a possible future Jake Delhomme replacement.

As for Steve Smith, even he has been open about the fact that he’s basically a decoy now, due to the ineffectiveness of the passing game. Carolina would get rid of Jake Delhomme if they could, but they may have to settle for making Smith happy and getting as much value in return as possible.

Buffalo Bills (2-4)

Head coach Dick Jauron is almost certainly out the door by mid-season, while many are beginning to question if quarterback Trent Edwards has what it takes to be a successful franchise quarterback.

Trade Terrell Owens, Marshawn Lynch, and/or Fred Jackson.

On The Rise: Dwayne Bowe

Category : Kansas City Chiefs, Player Profiles, Sleepers & Player Rankings

On The Rise: Dwayne BoweDwayne Bowe

Dwayne Bowe is entering his third season in the NFL, one traditionally thought to be a breakout year for young wide receivers. The term breakout should be used loosely in this case; in his rookie season Bowe caught 70 balls for 995 yards with 5 touchdowns, last year he caught 86 balls for 1,022 yards with 7 touchdowns. If you haven’t been watching this wide receiver closely, Bowe is on pace to become an elite fantasy player.

The immense strides Bowe is able to take due to his 6′2″, 221 pound frame enable him to rack up yards effortlessly. This frame is also useful in shedding defenders, one of his true talents. But what really makes him D-Bowe is his ability to leap into the air, to split from defenders and snag the ball seamlessly as if it were caught in a cycle of zero gravity. No he doesn’t live in the matrix, but Chiefs fans wouldn’t be surprised if he did.

It deserves to be mentioned that all of this was accomplished without a true starting quarterback; in the past two seasons Kansas City has had one of the most impressive QB shuffles in the league. The

Grading The Draft: AFC WEST

Grading The Draft: AFC WEST
Oakland Raidersheyward-bey
1(7): WR Darrius Heyward-Bey – Where do we begin? This pick may haunt the Raiders for years. Gridiron Experts would like to go on record and say that Heyward-Bey will be the next Troy Williamson or Ted Ginn Jr. Al Davis needs to allow his coaches to make the decisions, as his love for speed is destroying the Raiders.  Heyward-Bey will have more pressure on him than any other player in the draft.  If he can overlook the  fact that Raider fans wanted Crabtree and just go out and play, then his future could be great in Oakland, but most likey the media will kill him if he struggles early.
2(15): SS Mike Mitchell – This pick, even with the rumors of the Bears wanting him, is still a reach. Mitchell and Heyward-Bey are fast and could develop into star players, but value on draft day is key; Oakland could have gotten these two players and so much more by trading down or showing patience.
Other Moves: It’s hard to find anything worth talking about in this draft class. The Raiders no doubt had the worst draft of the league, and unless one of their later round projects turns out to be a full time starter, or Heyward-Bey proves the world wrong, the Raiders will need to block all memory of the 2009 draft.
Draft Grade: D

Denver Broncos
Knowshon Moreno1(12): RB Knowshon Moreno – The Broncos surprised many by drafting a running back over some much needed defensive help. The pick created the release of Selvin Young, and may cause more cuts as Moreno has a chance to become a star in this league. Under the Broncos old style of running the ball (the Alex Gibbs one cut, hit the hole, zone blocking attack) we’d figure Moreno would flourish in Denver, but with the team being flipped upside down under new coach Josh McDaniels, who knows how he’ll fit. The best part of Knowshon’s game is that he can do it all; the Broncos have a legitimate star in the making.
1(18): DE/LB Robert Ayers – Ayers fits the scheme that is being installed in Denver, but without more attention paid to the defensive line, the 3-4 may struggle in it’s first year. Good pick, but there were nose tackles available at this point.
2(5): CB Alphonso Smith – The cost of drafting Smith will not be forgotten by Bronco fans. This pick was the Seahawks 2nd, and to move back into the second round it cost Denver next years extra 1st round pick. However, Smith has excellent upside and may start in nickel situations.
For more insight into the Denver Broncos Draft please check back as our Broncos writer David East is writing an article for us later this week.
Our Draft Grade: C+

San Diego ChargersLarry English
1(16): LB Larry English – This is a great pick; the lack of a pass rush killed the Chargers all season last year, and with English the options for Ron Rivera are greatly increased. English may struggle in the 3-4 defense early on, but if used as a ball hawking blitzer, the Chargers can ease his introduction into the 3-4. Solid starter!
3(14): G Louis Vasquez – The holes weren’t there like they were in previous years, and with Vasquez chewing up space with his massive frame (6′5″, 333 lbs) LT will have more holes to punch through; another great pick.
4(13): DT Vaughn Martin – May be a risk; his college competition came from Canadian schools, as he played north of the border. His pro day was excellent, and the Chargers felt the gamble had great odds.
Other Moves: After Martin, the picks become more long shot projects, with the exception of CB Brandon Hughes from Oregon State. Hughes is tough and will be a great special teams player, maybe becoming a nickel corner.
Draft Grade: B

tyson jacksonKansas City Chiefs
1(3): DE/LB Tyson Jackson – This was a surprise pick for us, but the Chiefs think Jackson is a perfect fit into their defensive scheme. I wonder if there was a chance to move down and save money and gain picks? Either way, the Chiefs are happy with their guy. Jackson is an instant starter at KC, and should add toughness day one to a defense that has been struggling for years.
3(3): DT Alex Magee – Will most likely be moved to the defensive end position with his speed and size fitting well into a rotating starter spot.
4(2): CB Donald Washington – Very raw, but has potential. May be moved around to best suit his height and speed. We think the Chiefs may try him out at the safety position, due to his very agile quick feet and coverage skills. Good pick.
Other Moves: Fans and experts weren’t blown away with this draft class, but adding in newly acquired quarterback Matt Cassel for the 2nd round pick shuts everybody up. The trade for Cassel was what boosted their draft grade.
Draft Grade: B+
