Aaron Kampman Signs With The Jacksonville Jaguars

DE Kampman signed a multiyear deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday night. Kampman was our #4  sleeper in our 5 Underrated Free Agents Worthy Of Respect , and with all the (adult aged) free agents this year we feel the Jaguars made out like bandits.

Yes Julius Peppers has a wing span of  a runway and yes his blitzing speed is worthy of  elite status, but Kampman skills can not be taken lightly. His ability can add a much needed boost to the Jaguars defensive line. A must after the poor performance from last years 1st round pick Derrick Harvey, who struggled. Although the job at opposite end will be either Harvey or Quentin Groves, the training camp battle should be interesting.

NFL Free Agent Travel Plans

  • The Seahawks are not expected to tender an offer sheet to restricted free agent Brandon Marshall during his Saturday visit, but after the long history of bust receivers in the first round coughing up a 1st round pick for this talented wide-out would be like doubling down while playing Online Blackjack, the risk is worth the reward. Free agent CB Will James has scheduled a visit with the Seattle Seahawks, James has bounce around the league in the last 3-4 years but can be a solid 3rd corner. The Seahawks also have scheduled a visit with free agent TE Chris Baker and restricted free agent RB Mike Bell.
  • DE Aaron Kampman is one of the Jaguars’ “top priorities” in free agency and is scheduled to visit Jacksonville this week.
  • Free agent running back Willie Parker is scheduled to visit the Redskins on Monday.
  • David Carr is reportedly drawing a lot of interest from the Giants, Browns, and Cardinals but a top player is the 49er’s, would love to add another QB into the mix. Carr has been holding a clip board for a couple seasons now, but after being forced into a starting role so early into his career, teams are willing to take a shot on Carr’s comeback
  • Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Friday that the Bengals have shown interest in free agent Terrell Owens, this could combine for a lethal duo of wide receivers if #85 and #81 could keep their egos in check.
  • In a surprise move the Philadelphia Eagles have released LB Will Witherspoon after trading for him last season. Witherspoon had a good season but the Eagles must have felt $5 million was to0 heavy of a price tag. Panthers beat writer Steve Reed thinks the Panthers could be interested in bringing him if the price is right.
  • CB Leigh Bodden has drawn interest from the Texans and Patriots, but Bodden seems to be a player that

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on an NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players who can step in now that they have a year under them; the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft, so here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

1) St. Louis Rams Team Needs: DT | QB | OT | CB | WR

The Rams really can’t screw this up. There are so many needs on this team that no matter whom they are able to grab in free agency, a blue chip player will be added to this team in the first round. Everyone is preaching about Ndamukong Suh, but the Rams have so much already invested on the defensive line that trading down a couple spots could really pay off with adding more talent quickly. A trade that could drop the Rams down just 5-6 spots is worth its weight in gold.

Mike Vick would be a great fit for this club since the Rams play in a dome, but the Eagles “no trade until the pre-season” smoke screen means the price is not cheap. Right now we’d say unload DE L. Little to the Eagles for Vick, and try to steal a couple of Philly’s late round picks, then grab Suh at pick one. Like we said, the end result is hard to mess up with the top pick in the draft, but teams do it all the time. The good news is there is so much offensive and defensive talent on the board this year that we’d be amazed if the Rams couldn’t improve on their 2 win season.

2) Detroit Lions Team Needs: DE | LB | CB …Anything On Defense

The Lions added a couple good defensive pieces last year with SS Louis Delmas and DT Sammie Lee Hill, but they need more. It’s unlikely that any of these bottom feeder teams are going to lure away an elite unrestricted free agent, so the Detroit Lions best bet is to simply take the best defensive player available. Another top key to this offseason for the Lions would be re-signing Larry Foote, who didn’t play as bad as his surrounding cast last year (70 tackles and 2 sacks). Re-signing Foote and maybe CB Williams James are the Lions top priorities in the next couple weeks.

3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Needs: DT | DE |LB | OL

The Buccaneers had the NFL’s worst rushing defense last year, allowing an average of 158.2 yards per game on the ground. Fans can say what they want about needing offense, but they’re in a division with Carolina’s J. Stewart and D. Williams, Falcons Michael Turner  and the Saints offensive attack. Pressure on the QB and stopping the run are big needs this offseason. DT Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma would be a great fit for the Bucs, but if Tampa can somehow add depth through free agency they would benefit from adding some kind of a pass rusher or one of the

Matt Jones Is A Good Fit For The Bengals

It’s about friggin’ time .

The former Arkansas quarterback and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver, Matt Jones , appears to finally be getting another crack at the NFL after sitting out the entire 2009 season.

Jones, who was released during the 2009 offseason following cocaine allegations, sat out the entire 2009 NFL season as he was unable to find the right (or any) suitor, despite appearing in an interview on ESPN in an effort to clear his name and display his eagerness to move on from his mistakes.

However, despite just the one “screw-up”, serving a three-game suspension, being released, and coming clean with his issues (as well as over-coming them), this fast, talented receiver went job-less for an entire season.

And the worst part was, no one seemed to care. Even more, few people cared to even question: where the hell is Matt Jones?

After catching 65 passes for 761 yards in just 12 games as Jacksonville’s top receiver in 2008, Jones was inexplicably released after serving a suspension to end the season, despite the alleged instance that led to the suspension occurring before the season began.

But let’s not get into Jack Del Rio and all of his shenanigans. Because, let’s face it, no one knows why Del Rio does what he does. And unless you’re a Jaguars fan, you simply just don’t care.

Still, it’s fairly interesting that the team knew about Jones’ situation all season, kept him, used him, and then threw him away after he served the

Begin The NFL Cuts

  • Antonio Pierce was let go by the New York Giants after 5 seasons on Thursday. The 31 year old linebacker was a part of a very pathetic defense that will being under the microscope this off-season. Pierce missed the final seven games of the season with a bad foot, but age and maybe being the scape-goat has forced the Giants to move on. Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan and defensive line coach Mike Waufle were fired after the season so this might be the beginning of a defensive spring cleaning for the Giants.
  • The Jacksonville Jaguars have let go of wide receiver Torry Holt, LT- Tra Thomas and DT-Rob Meier in hopes of shaking up a young team. Holt caught 51 passes for 722 yards with the Jaguars last season, adding to his impressive 920 career receptions for 13,382 yards and 74 touchdowns. These players releases aren’t really big news, age has become a factor for Tra Thomas and Rob Meier while Holt is baggage that can be filled with a young project

The Pre-Game Ritual

Ah, the pre-game ritual.

Nothing’s more primitive and at the same time more complex than the tradition behind the ritual.

Different players do different things, before, during and after the game has been won and lost.

But, why?

The answer’s not as complex as one may think. It’s simply because it makes the player feel better, boosts their confidence. Over time it progresses from a habit into a full blown ritual that one cannot deviate from or suffer dire consequences.

I started playing the game of football at a very young age, first at the flag level, then the grade school, onto middle school, eventually high school and have received offers from semi-professional teams.

The very first ritual I had sticks with me to this day.

Before every flag football game I would have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich washed down with not milk, but blue PowerAde. Not red. Not yellow. Not green. If it wasn’t blue, it wasn’t happening. I followed that ritual for every single game of my football career, and my wrestling one as well for that matter.

As I grew older, the ritual progressed.

High school was when the rituals really got interesting as I had a plethora of them.

Like my pre-game play list on my iPod. Same songs every single week of a four year football career for the Central Catholic Crusaders. They included:

Declawed Jaguars Lose at Home

The Wildcard race in the AFC just got a little more interesting…Jaguars

The Indianapolis Colts moved to 14-0 with a late comeback score to take the lead against divisional rivals the Jacksonville Jaguars. After a good back and forth high scoring game, the Colts found a way to put the final set of points on the board winning 35-31.

The drive that took the lead was quick but painful for the sellout crowd in Jacksonville. Reggie Wayne caught a deep 65 yard touchdown pass and couldn’t be taken down on a drive that lasted 42 seconds, which not only hushed the crowd but stole the momentum for good.

A tough loss for Jacksonville; the Jaguars played hard and rewarded their first full house of the season with a thriller, but ultimately couldn’t quite measure up to the Colts.

Gridiron Experts were a little annoyed as we had put our solid picking record on the line going with the underdog cats. Jacksonville was driving at the end of the game and had a chance to steal the win from the Colts, but poor play calling and quarterback decisions had the Jaguars falling short around the Colts 35 yard line.

Thursday Night Football: Colts vs. Jags

Indianapolis Colts-3  vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

The first time these teams met, a failed two-point conversion by the Jaguars in the fourth quarter was all that separated these two in Indianapolis’ 14-12 victory in the season opener. The Colts have already clinched home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs, and appear to have no interest in pursuing a perfect record…making this game hard to pick.

On one hand the Colts don’t want a divisional rival to be the ones to hand them their first loss, while on the other hand…who cares, it’s the Super Bowl they’re after.

Indianapolis is 6-2 all-time at Jacksonville, and 5-0-1 against the spread on the road this season.  Keep in mind though, the Indianapolis injury report is as long as some team’s rosters. Most players are just banged up and will play, but Colts coach Jim Caldwell has said only his “healthy” starters will play in Thursday night’s game, meaning DE’s Dwight Freeney (abdomen) and Robert Mathis (quad) who are listed as questionable are most likely out.

Feature back Maurice Jones-Drew is in a slump and the best way to get him out of it is to feed him the ball against the Colts’ banged-up front seven. Jones-Drew can easily take over a game with his blend of power and speed; he has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time, is averaging 4.5 yards per carry, and has 14 rushing TD’s.

Our Thoughts:

The Jaguars see this game as a must win even though they are right now sitting in a playoff spot, while the Colts just see extra time off being in an early Thursday game and could really care less if they win or lose. While our picks have been on fire lately, the Thursday games have been difficult…wait, who picks the Browns…really, they’ve been hard to pick for everybody.

We like the Jaguars in an upset as too many factors come into play Thursday: home field, Colts injuries, and the chance the Jaguars lock in closer to a JAGplayoff spot. Expect a high scoring entertainment grudge match.
