Peyton the Kid: “I’ll make ya Famous”

Not taking anything away from talented New Orleans Saints cornerback Tracy Porter, but sometimes in the Wild West notoriety is more about the gunslinger you take down with a bullet rather than the skills of the man who shot it. To put Peyton in a pine box on the NFL’s biggest stage, well, that earns the type of 15 minutes that are slow to evaporate.

Since Tracy’s pick-6 of Peyton Manning on Super Bowl Sunday, the newly-dubbed game-saver has been on every meaningful sports show across the land, including ESPN. Porter has wiggled his way into the type of superstardom that even most anchors of the network have yet to experience. Porter has been on SportsCenter, Mike and Mike, First Take, Jim Rome, and a slue of other ESPN productions – everyone of which goes the same way: Porter is asked about the INT, he tells it like he’s Gorge Foreman come again, predicting the KO of Michael Moorer.

A Super Bowl champion has every right to brag, especially one who single-handedly sealed the game with an interception of such magnitude. But to hear Porter tell it, he baited Manning into throwing his way. The self-gratifying Porter claims to have outsmarted the future Hall of Fame QB by knowing exactly what he was going to do.

On the real side of life, the rest of us have full access to the video. Peyton dropped back, Wayne was curling (supposedly) back to the ball, and the play went awry due to Wayne’s position when the ball was thrown. Porter, who had lost Wayne, received a gift right in his chest when Reggie failed to come back for the football.

Many feel like Porter is taking far too much credit for a play gone bust. And ESPN isn’t helping his case by constantly giving him a platform to pat himself on the back. No one but Porter knows if he truly outsmarted the greatest football player in the league or if he just rolled the dice and struck some golden luck in the no deposit codes online casino from Heaven. But for right now, it’s all moot point.

It is what it is, to quote De Niro, and Tracy Porter and the Saints win while Manning and the Colts look onward to next year. Tracy deserves his time in the limelight, whether he broke the Manning Code or not. But he might want to be careful with the self-advertizing. Football players have great memories, especially Peyton Manning, and the next time they meet might leave Porter with a whole lot to think about that he never planned for.

Fantasy Football: Keeper League Strategies

How many of you were guilty of keeping once fantasy studs Brian Westbrook, Clinton Portis or Willie Parker last season in you keeper league.

Embarrassed ? don’t be, it’s not your fault. Sure injuries took their toll on these guys, but they were once game breakers that won you fantasy weeks on a regular basis, now they’re just dead weight in many keeper leagues. Of course age was always in the back of your mind on whether you should let these guys go, but the risk was worth the reward….at least that’s what you thought.

Willie Parker lost carries to R.Mendenhall and Portis was hurt almost all year. Guys like Brian Westbrook were a coin flip too many people, as his hands are top notch and could at least be used in ways to still rack up points through the air. Unfortunately Westbrook did neither and was even beat out in the rushing yards category by a white quarterback; Aaron Rodgers (true stat).

So was there a lesson that was learned here? Did you tell yourself never again? If you did, we applaud you, as passing on big name players in keeping leagues is a difficult and risky task.

Not all veteran running backs were terrible in 2009, leaving the odd gambling fantasy owner kicking himself. Thomas Jones is 31, and is definitely one of those guys you looked at and told yourself “that has got to be all he’s got left”. But Jones finds ways to make a near empty tank of gas last an entire season.

Thomas Jones had 1402 rushing yards and 14 TD’s in the 2009 season. I can bet you there were more than a few fantasy football owners that threw this prize fish back into the waters.

He was not the only running back that was suppose to move out of the way for a rookie; Joseph Addai may be thought as an older guy but at 26 the Colts drafted Donald Brown to take some the slack off Addai’s shoulders. People assumed that the torch was about to be passed by mid-season after Addai’s performance in the 08 season. But nothing could be further from the truth, Joseph Addai was a touchdown machine with 10 on the ground and 3 threw the air. It’s safe to say he didn’t like the addition of a 1st round running back looking

This will put a smile (and maybe a tear) on the face of a Saints fan, while stinging a Colts fan at the exact same time…as for everyone else, we all say the same thing to ourselves quietly under our breath: “next year”…

Gridiron Experts Super Bowl Pick

Gridiron Experts has been on a hot streak with our free picks for the playoffs in our weekly article Money Where Your Mouth Is, but this game is a lot closer and harder to predict. While many watched a nail biter with the luck of a coin flip to decide the outcome of the New Orleans Saints stamped ticket to the Super Bowl, the Colts won with ease. Does that mean that the Colts are a better team? No, in fact all we really know for sure is that the Colts are favored to win.

5 points is the spread in which the Indianapolis Colts are favored to win Super Bowl XLIV. Are they really deserving of such a large margin? Bookies may think so, but those who love sports betting aren’t sold on any kind of a  sure thing.

The fact that The Who are the halftime show is almost fitting under these circumstances, and we are going to break down why.

The Indianapolis Colts had an amazing season. They were working on a perfect record right up until they pulled their starters against the Jets, allowing New York into the playoffs and setting up the AFC Championship. But the result of laying down the last couple games of the season didn’t

Rookie Jackpot

The NFL is loaded with tonnes of young talent. The search never ends for younger, stronger, faster and bigger players every day. Naturally, some of these young guns will end up in the Super Bowl with their respective teams just as luck of the draw from being drafted at the perfect time. Some of these rooks helped their teams attain elite status, while others warm the bench. Nonetheless when all the smoke clears one group of these rookies will be able to say they already have a one up on players like Ladanian Tomlinson, Barry Sanders, and Dan Marino. Simply because of the ring, something many greats still do not and may never have a claim to.

The Colts lead the way with a large group of rookies, 11 to be exact, many of whom were integral to this season’s success. Topping off the list is wide receiver Austin Collie; hooking up with Peyton for 7 touchdowns. Collie has emerged as a new weapon for the all pro and his future is bright. Next comes running back sensation Donald Brown, he was impressive when called on and you can just see he’s waiting to explode. Cornerback Jerraud Powers earned the starting job for the colts this season and has been stellar alongside the other rookie in the secondary, Jacob Lacey who recorded 85 tackles with three interceptions. Punter Pat McAfee started for the colts this season, while outside linebacker Ramon Humber chipped in where he could recording

PEYTON- THE G.O.A.T.?

Before it’s over, the critics and wannabe-know-it-alls are going to say that Peyton Manning has to win 14 Super Bowls, eight MVP trophies, and throw for 200,000 yards to be named the greatest quarterback of all time. Seriously, what hasn’t the man done yet in his 12 seasons as the league’s most dominant quarterback?

I’m not even going to bring up the stats because anyone can Google those. The bottom line is year in and year out Peyton takes whatever cast and crew is available and delivers at least 12 wins, a playoff appearance, and an occasional championship. No other quarterback in the league has consistently dominated in the manner that Manning does.

This season served the perfect testament to number 18’s case for Greatest QB of all time. Tony Dungy, one of the sharpest coaching minds in the game, exited as head coach of Manning’s Indianapolis Colts. Marvin Harrison asked for his release following last season, leaving only one long-tenured receiver (Reggie Wayne) for Manning to throw to. Remember, the other starter this year was supposed to be Anthony Gonzalez, who injured his right knee in the season opener against Jacksonville and was eventually placed on the injured reserve.

All this change normally calls for a rebuilding season or two. However, Peyton worked his

Austin Collie The X-Factor

Anthony Gonzalez’s first play of the season ended up being his last. Despite the damage that was done to his knee on a non-contact play not being season-ending, it was still severe enough that he never found his way back to the field. Instead, Peyton Manning had to start, in the middle of week one mind you, with a rookie receiver out of BYU by the name of Austin Collie, as well as a second-year man out of the D III school, Mount Union, in Pierre Garcon.

Garcon made an immediate impact with his big-play ability and speed, although as the season went on, it became more and more clear: Austin Collie was the guy the Colts would have to lean on.

With teams putting their best corners on Reggie Wayne and spying on Dallas Clark, Manning was forced to make things work with his two young receivers, and ever since Week Four, Collie has been a consistent, reliable (if not dominant) force in the slot.

Collie has quickly developed over the course of the year, polishing his already refined route-running abilities, living up to his “glue-like” hands in college, and surprising everyone with

Championship Weekend

How do I start without mentioning that Gridiron Experts is 5-0 with our free picks thus far in Money Where Your Mouth Is? In fact, I had called today’s games almost to a tee. All that aside, congrats to Colts and Saints fans; the perfect season didn’t happen but the Super Bowl is going down!

Thoughts and observations from today’s action:

  • Mark Sanchez will be a superstar in this league- The kid can play, and while he wasn’t given a huge work load, you can bet he will be a center piece the Jets will build around for years to come. What a pump and go with B. Edwards…glad  to see him not drop it.
  • Peyton Manning is an offensive encyclopedia of knowledge- I had mentioned before that he was like a second offensive coordinator on the sidelines. After the seeing the second half performance in comparison to the first few drives, it like night and day…wow.
  • Fumble-itis Vikings- The stats will break fans hearts. The Vikings had a huge overall gain in yards without even a touch in overtime. Something I noticed, or rather didn’t notice in this game: Jared Allen. His name wasn’t even mentioned by the commentators. The Saints however did an amazing job in shutting down one of the best pass rushers in the game.
  • Last drive luck- I may hear it from Saints fans, but in my opinion the pass interference call looked overthrown to me, while the catch that was reviewed looked like it hit the ground. You’ve got to be lucky sometimes, and these two plays were very much an act of faith in overtime.
