History Says No To Repeat Of 2000 Yard Rusher.

Last season Chris Johnson became a fantasy owner’s best friend with his quest for a 2000 yard rushing season.  Not only did he accomplish this goal, but he also set the mark for total yards from scrimmage.  Johnson is already proclaiming that he will be in hot pursuit of a back to back 2000 yard rushing campaign.  Unfortunately, for Johnson history does not show an overly positive outcome the following year for backs coming off of a 2000 yard season.   Below is a listing of all six men who have achieved a 2000 rushing season along with the yards per carry for that season.

Player Year Rush Yrds Avg
O.J. Simpson 1973 2003 6.0
Eric Dickerson 1984 2105 5.6
Barry Sanders 1997 2053 6.1
Terrell Davis 1998 2008 5.1
Jamal Lewis 2003 2066 5.3
Chris Johnson 2009 2006 5.6

The numbers displayed above are undoubtedly very impressive.  Each player went over five yards per carry in their 2000 yard season.  Most of these players even got close to or even up to the six yards per carry average.  It is easy to understand that these

Aaron Kampman Signs With The Jacksonville Jaguars

DE Kampman signed a multiyear deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday night. Kampman was our #4  sleeper in our 5 Underrated Free Agents Worthy Of Respect , and with all the (adult aged) free agents this year we feel the Jaguars made out like bandits.

Yes Julius Peppers has a wing span of  a runway and yes his blitzing speed is worthy of  elite status, but Kampman skills can not be taken lightly. His ability can add a much needed boost to the Jaguars defensive line. A must after the poor performance from last years 1st round pick Derrick Harvey, who struggled. Although the job at opposite end will be either Harvey or Quentin Groves, the training camp battle should be interesting.

NFL Free Agent Travel Plans

  • The Seahawks are not expected to tender an offer sheet to restricted free agent Brandon Marshall during his Saturday visit, but after the long history of bust receivers in the first round coughing up a 1st round pick for this talented wide-out would be like doubling down while playing Online Blackjack, the risk is worth the reward. Free agent CB Will James has scheduled a visit with the Seattle Seahawks, James has bounce around the league in the last 3-4 years but can be a solid 3rd corner. The Seahawks also have scheduled a visit with free agent TE Chris Baker and restricted free agent RB Mike Bell.
  • DE Aaron Kampman is one of the Jaguars’ “top priorities” in free agency and is scheduled to visit Jacksonville this week.
  • Free agent running back Willie Parker is scheduled to visit the Redskins on Monday.
  • David Carr is reportedly drawing a lot of interest from the Giants, Browns, and Cardinals but a top player is the 49er’s, would love to add another QB into the mix. Carr has been holding a clip board for a couple seasons now, but after being forced into a starting role so early into his career, teams are willing to take a shot on Carr’s comeback
  • Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Friday that the Bengals have shown interest in free agent Terrell Owens, this could combine for a lethal duo of wide receivers if #85 and #81 could keep their egos in check.
  • In a surprise move the Philadelphia Eagles have released LB Will Witherspoon after trading for him last season. Witherspoon had a good season but the Eagles must have felt $5 million was to0 heavy of a price tag. Panthers beat writer Steve Reed thinks the Panthers could be interested in bringing him if the price is right.
  • CB Leigh Bodden has drawn interest from the Texans and Patriots, but Bodden seems to be a player that

How Much Do You Now Hate The Word “Tender”

This uncapped year isn’t at all what we thought it would be, thanks to the CBA rules in which a player has to play 6 seasons in order to become a unrestricted free agent. Some teams like the The Chargers, for example, have tendered four restricted free agents at the highest possible level. If the cap was still around, San Diego would only be able one of the four via the franchise or transition tag. The Chargers would have been forced to either re-sign the other three,  or let them leave via free agency.

What’s even more frustrating is the Final Eight Plan (no this has nothing to do with the Oceanic Six) In an effort to ensure that the best teams from the last capped year won’t be able to corner the market.  The CBA places specific restrictions on the ability of the final eight playoff teams the Ravens, Colts, Jets, Chargers, Cardinals, Cowboys, Vikings and Saints to sign players.

Confused? I don’t blame you so Click Here to read all the rules

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 2)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on a NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players that can step in now that they have a year under them, and the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft. So here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

Read the First Article: Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

11) Denver Broncos Team Needs: DT | DE | WR | QB

Strange to see Denver this high on the board considering the fast start to the season with new coach Josh McDaniel’s. The Broncos completely fell apart in the final month of the season, losing 4 games in a row, including losses to the Chiefs and Raiders.

The Broncos will likely try to improve their running defense through free agency and could target an offensive playmaker with pick 10. The Brandon Marshall trade rumors have started to fire up, causing many mock draft experts to target the top wide receiver landing in Denver.

Demaryius Thomas is high in our books, but a broken foot could hurt his stock value, making Dez Bryant a strong favorite. There is also a chance that if a top QB is available at 10 the Broncos could fill the shoes left by Jay Cutler. Either way the Broncos are sitting strong at pick 10 to take the best player available without the huge rookie money at the top of the draft.

12) Miami Dolphins Team Needs: WR | LB | SS

The Dolphins had injuries to key players in ‘09, but did an amazing job filling position spots. Players stepped up week after week to fill roles unlike any other team. The Dolphins are a diamond in the rough; if they can stay healthy and add a couple playmakers, this team could challenge for the AFC East division title.

This young team is a year older and wiser now, and will try to grow on the accomplishments of the ‘09 season. Personally Gridiron Experts would like to see this pick used on the offensive side of the ball, and we’re sure fans would agree. Adding a WR that can stretch the field would be ideal for this running attack, yet the team has enough rookies, and leadership would be nice as well.

We think trading this pick to a team like Arizona for a smart, tough WR like Anquan Boldin would be a great move. At 29 the trade wouldn’t be pick for player, but if a mid round pick came with Boldin, the Dolphins would walk away happy. Gridiron Experts sees pick 12 the first traded away pick of the draft, either down to gain more picks, or to another team for a veteran leader. The Dolphins are already a young team and need to add talent and wisdom now.

13) San Francisco 49er’s Team Needs: OT | WR | SS | KR

The only thing the 49er’s need to do this offseason is cut Takeo Spikes. Why? Because the veteran linebacker is a playoff curse. In the 12 years that Takeo Spikes has been in the NFL he has never been a part of a team that has made the playoffs…wow!

The 49er’s don’t really have any massive needs on the team, despite what some may say about QB Alex Smith.

Alex Smith was solid down the stretch and should have done just enough to have earned another opportunity to start for the 49er’s next season. There is a chance that Smith could succeed and lead this team into the post season if a smart offensive system can be installed that this young club can get behind.  Keep in mind we’re being optimistic, as newly hired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye II doesn’t come with an impressive resume. Raye has never run an offense that has ranked high in any category that mattered, and his hiring makes no sense in the direction the

1) St. Louis Rams Team Needs: DT | QB | OT | CB | WR

The Rams really can’t screw this up. There are so many needs on this team that no matter whom they are able to grab in free agency, a blue chip player will be added to this team in the first round. Everyone is preaching about Ndamukong Suh, but the Rams have so much already invested on the defensive line that trading down a couple spots could really pay off with adding more talent quickly. A trade that could drop the Rams down just 5-6 spots is worth its weight in gold.

Mike Vick would be a great fit for this club since the Rams play in a dome, but the Eagles “no trade until the pre-season” smoke screen means the price is not cheap. Right now we’d say unload DE L. Little to the Eagles for Vick, and try to steal a couple of Philly’s late round picks, then grab Suh at pick one. Like we said, the end result is hard to mess up with the top pick in the draft, but teams do it all the time. The good news is there is so much offensive and defensive talent on the board this year that we’d be amazed if the Rams couldn’t improve on their 2 win season.

2) Detroit Lions Team Needs: DE | LB | CB …Anything On Defense

The Lions added a couple good defensive pieces last year with SS Louis Delmas and DT Sammie Lee Hill, but they need more. It’s unlikely that any of these bottom feeder teams are going to lure away an elite unrestricted free agent, so the Detroit Lions best bet is to simply take the best defensive player available. Another top key to this offseason for the Lions would be re-signing Larry Foote, who didn’t play as bad as his surrounding cast last year (70 tackles and 2 sacks). Re-signing Foote and maybe CB Williams James are the Lions top priorities in the next couple weeks.

3) Tampa Bay Buccaneers Team Needs: DT | DE |LB | OL

The Buccaneers had the NFL’s worst rushing defense last year, allowing an average of 158.2 yards per game on the ground. Fans can say what they want about needing offense, but they’re in a division with Carolina’s J. Stewart and D. Williams, Falcons Michael Turner  and the Saints offensive attack. Pressure on the QB and stopping the run are big needs this offseason. DT Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma would be a great fit for the Bucs, but if Tampa can somehow add depth through free agency they would benefit from adding some kind of a pass rusher or one of the

Peyton the Kid: “I’ll make ya Famous”

Not taking anything away from talented New Orleans Saints cornerback Tracy Porter, but sometimes in the Wild West notoriety is more about the gunslinger you take down with a bullet rather than the skills of the man who shot it. To put Peyton in a pine box on the NFL’s biggest stage, well, that earns the type of 15 minutes that are slow to evaporate.

Since Tracy’s pick-6 of Peyton Manning on Super Bowl Sunday, the newly-dubbed game-saver has been on every meaningful sports show across the land, including ESPN. Porter has wiggled his way into the type of superstardom that even most anchors of the network have yet to experience. Porter has been on SportsCenter, Mike and Mike, First Take, Jim Rome, and a slue of other ESPN productions – everyone of which goes the same way: Porter is asked about the INT, he tells it like he’s Gorge Foreman come again, predicting the KO of Michael Moorer.

A Super Bowl champion has every right to brag, especially one who single-handedly sealed the game with an interception of such magnitude. But to hear Porter tell it, he baited Manning into throwing his way. The self-gratifying Porter claims to have outsmarted the future Hall of Fame QB by knowing exactly what he was going to do.

On the real side of life, the rest of us have full access to the video. Peyton dropped back, Wayne was curling (supposedly) back to the ball, and the play went awry due to Wayne’s position when the ball was thrown. Porter, who had lost Wayne, received a gift right in his chest when Reggie failed to come back for the football.

Many feel like Porter is taking far too much credit for a play gone bust. And ESPN isn’t helping his case by constantly giving him a platform to pat himself on the back. No one but Porter knows if he truly outsmarted the greatest football player in the league or if he just rolled the dice and struck some golden luck in the no deposit codes online casino from Heaven. But for right now, it’s all moot point.

It is what it is, to quote De Niro, and Tracy Porter and the Saints win while Manning and the Colts look onward to next year. Tracy deserves his time in the limelight, whether he broke the Manning Code or not. But he might want to be careful with the self-advertizing. Football players have great memories, especially Peyton Manning, and the next time they meet might leave Porter with a whole lot to think about that he never planned for.

Fantasy Football: Keeper League Strategies

Category : Arizona Cardinals, Fantasy Football Strategies, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets

How many of you were guilty of keeping once fantasy studs Brian Westbrook, Clinton Portis or Willie Parker last season in you keeper league.

Embarrassed ? don’t be, it’s not your fault. Sure injuries took their toll on these guys, but they were once game breakers that won you fantasy weeks on a regular basis, now they’re just dead weight in many keeper leagues. Of course age was always in the back of your mind on whether you should let these guys go, but the risk was worth the reward….at least that’s what you thought.

Willie Parker lost carries to R.Mendenhall and Portis was hurt almost all year. Guys like Brian Westbrook were a coin flip too many people, as his hands are top notch and could at least be used in ways to still rack up points through the air. Unfortunately Westbrook did neither and was even beat out in the rushing yards category by a white quarterback; Aaron Rodgers (true stat).

So was there a lesson that was learned here? Did you tell yourself never again? If you did, we applaud you, as passing on big name players in keeping leagues is a difficult and risky task.

Not all veteran running backs were terrible in 2009, leaving the odd gambling fantasy owner kicking himself. Thomas Jones is 31, and is definitely one of those guys you looked at and told yourself “that has got to be all he’s got left”. But Jones finds ways to make a near empty tank of gas last an entire season.

Thomas Jones had 1402 rushing yards and 14 TD’s in the 2009 season. I can bet you there were more than a few fantasy football owners that threw this prize fish back into the waters.

He was not the only running back that was suppose to move out of the way for a rookie; Joseph Addai may be thought as an older guy but at 26 the Colts drafted Donald Brown to take some the slack off Addai’s shoulders. People assumed that the torch was about to be passed by mid-season after Addai’s performance in the 08 season. But nothing could be further from the truth, Joseph Addai was a touchdown machine with 10 on the ground and 3 threw the air. It’s safe to say he didn’t like the addition of a 1st round running back looking
