NFL Free Agent Travel Plans

  • The Seahawks are not expected to tender an offer sheet to restricted free agent Brandon Marshall during his Saturday visit, but after the long history of bust receivers in the first round coughing up a 1st round pick for this talented wide-out would be like doubling down while playing Online Blackjack, the risk is worth the reward. Free agent CB Will James has scheduled a visit with the Seattle Seahawks, James has bounce around the league in the last 3-4 years but can be a solid 3rd corner. The Seahawks also have scheduled a visit with free agent TE Chris Baker and restricted free agent RB Mike Bell.
  • DE Aaron Kampman is one of the Jaguars’ “top priorities” in free agency and is scheduled to visit Jacksonville this week.
  • Free agent running back Willie Parker is scheduled to visit the Redskins on Monday.
  • David Carr is reportedly drawing a lot of interest from the Giants, Browns, and Cardinals but a top player is the 49er’s, would love to add another QB into the mix. Carr has been holding a clip board for a couple seasons now, but after being forced into a starting role so early into his career, teams are willing to take a shot on Carr’s comeback
  • Agent Drew Rosenhaus confirmed Friday that the Bengals have shown interest in free agent Terrell Owens, this could combine for a lethal duo of wide receivers if #85 and #81 could keep their egos in check.
  • In a surprise move the Philadelphia Eagles have released LB Will Witherspoon after trading for him last season. Witherspoon had a good season but the Eagles must have felt $5 million was to0 heavy of a price tag. Panthers beat writer Steve Reed thinks the Panthers could be interested in bringing him if the price is right.
  • CB Leigh Bodden has drawn interest from the Texans and Patriots, but Bodden seems to be a player that

5 Underrated Free Agents Worthy Of Respect

The free agent market hits us like a tidal wave of possibilities. Fans are eagerly waiting and wondering how their team is going to make an upgrade quickly, while others want to know the affects it will have on fantasy football. The following is a quick list of players I think are flying under the radar who could have a huge year with a change of scenery.

#5 WR Antonio Bryant

Bryant had an amazing season in 2008, racking up 1,248  receiving yards and 7 touchdowns, but was franchise tagged last year to play on a team he wanted out of. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were desperate to keep this unhappy wide receiver around for another year, but now they are letting him loose. Before playing two seasons in Tampa, Bryant bounced around the league, playing in Cleveland and in San Fransisco after the three seasons in Dallas in which he was drafted from.

At 28, this receiver is a lot more in tune with what he wants and where he thinks could be the best possible destination for his skills. Bryant still has a few more good years left in him, and a team looking to add an instant starter could land themselves a great wide receiver weapon.

4) DE Aaron Kampman

I am not Kampman’s doctor, but if the light is green, teams would be stupid not to gamble on this sack monster. Aaron suffered a knee injury earlier in the year, forcing him to miss time and play somewhat average football for the Packers. If you look at the three previous years in

Patriots Lack Of A Stud Running Back

New England Patriots Lack of a Stud Running Back

It’s no news to football fans, but it’s something that’s worthy of pointing out. The New England Patriots are one of the very few teams in the NFL to not have a “star” running back. They may have taken a shot at one in the past few years with the drafting of Laurence Maroney, but he’s yet to evolve into what most would consider a “star”. Instead the Pats have opted to go with a carousel of talented running backs over the years which have proven them to be very successful, but is that trend finally coming to an end for the Patriots. Do the Pats finally need to break their own mold and get a star RB to back up Tom Brady?

The Patriots have been a model franchise since the 2001 season when Drew Bledsoe went down, paving the way for Tom Brady. Ever since then they have won three Super Bowls, and the most high profile RB on the team throughout that time has been Corey Dillon, who barely has a profile at all. So is it finally time for someone with a little bit of weight to their name to take-up the RB position?

Not at all, the Pats are who they are because of their aerial attack. Tom Brady is the focal point of this team for any defense, which allows sub-par running backs like Benjarvus-Green-Ellis (the law firm) to shine because of the concern the defense has for Brady. Laurence Maroney is talented when called upon and can get the job done well enough. And of course, we can’t forget about Kevin Faulk (Mr.Clutch). Every time Faulk catches or runs the ball it’s on third down, and always goes for a first!

In finality, no, the Patriots do not need a top tier running back to succeed in the coming years. The downfall of this team at the current time has nothing to do with their offense; it has to be their defense. A feared unit that once

Fashion By Belichick:  In Stores Next Fall

You’re probably wondering why I’m writing about what NFL coaches wear on the sideline.  Who cares, right?  It’s the playoffs! You may not admit it, but everyone noticed when Mike Nolan wore suits in honor of his dad (Dick Nolan), when Belichick cut the sleeves on his hoodie, or the remarkable unmovable hair of Jimmy Johnson.  Maybe by fashion statements, we get some insight into the personality of coaches that we don’t get from interviews or talk shows.  Whatever it may be, random things coaches wear on the sideline remain a topic of conversation, even if it’s a small topic.  If anything, it’s water cooler talk and gives us something to break the monotony of never-ending analyzes of the upcoming games.

Lately, one coach stands above all.  One of the most low-key, cards to the chest, and successful coaches in the NFL is none other than Bill Belichick.  His guarded personality doesn’t portray to welcome or invite attention to him or the Patriots.  So, why every weekend, especially doing the winter months, doing the NFL season, we witness a new fashion statement?  First, it was the hoodie, then the hoddie with the sleeves cut, and this past weekend was the old school wool hat with the furry ball on top.  To quote the guys from Monday Night Countdown, “C’mon Man!”  In retrospective, Belichick was one of the first to wear wind pants and hoodies on the sideline.  You can say he contributed to the new laid back attire commonly worn by NFL coaches.  That being said a few questions surfaced.  What happened to the business suit days?  What happened to the cowboy hat (Bum Phillips) or the felt hat (Tom Landry)?  What happened to the days when you can distinguish between the head coach and the athletic trainer?  Every once in awhile a coach will try to bring back the business like attire (Mike Nolan), but Nolan had to ask permission from the NFL to do so.  Yes, ask permission.  As of July 2009,

One and done
Four teams are packing their bags and joining the fans on the couch for the remainder of the playoffs. Records were broken and there were upset surprises; a shake up to the norm should make for an interesting playoffs.

Patriots Lose in Foxborough?
Tom Brady was quoted as saying ‘I would have been booing us, too’ after the horrible performance on Sunday. A game that many thought would be a standard Patriots home win started with the Ravens Ray Rice blasting an 83-yard touchdown run up the middle on the game’s first play from scrimmage. Things didn’t get any better from there; Brady was intercepted 3 times while the Ravens running game owned the Patriots to a point where Joe Flacco wasn’t even needed. Flacco ended his day with just 35 passing yards, completing only 4 passes.

Where to go from here: the Patriots were banged up, and not healthy in this game…but that’s not an excuse. This team needs to be rebuilt on defense, freeing up some aged talent for more drafted Patriot studs like Jerod Mayo. This team should be proud of their season, and the best is yet to come with young talent like Julian Edelman and Darius Butler, but either way some dead weight needs to be dropped for next season.

Eagles No Match for Cowboys

Defensively the Eagles were outmatched, offensively the Eagles were terrible, and overall this game was hard to watch.  Fans will call for blood but the Cowboys earned all three of their wins against Philly, this last one maybe with a little help from the refs. The Cowboys seemed to be in every Eagles huddle, blanketing the receivers’ routes. Dallas was also able to break through the offensive wall with ease, pressuring Donovan McNabb all game. McNabb was sacked four times but he could have been easily flattened 7-8 times more. The Cowboys just wanted it more, and seemed to have a bigger, tougher team that was able to do whatever they wanted.

Where to go from here: the Eagles will no doubt address their linebacker core this offseason, and maybe their safeties as well, but the coaching staff needs to get a hard look. The never ending addiction to throwing the ball has held back the Eagles for years, teams need balance and a running game sets up the pass. McNabb still has skills, but a balanced attack would allow for faster starts and longer drives.

Bengals All Talk No Game

The New York Jets had a smart game plan that they stuck with to a tee.  Run the ball, play smart defense, and control the clock. Cincinnati was not looked at as a team that was going to the Super Bowl, but with home field advantage in the Wildcard weekend, many had the Bengals in their pick’em pools.

The Jets proved they were no underdog.

Ochocinco, shut down by Jets Pro Bowl CB Darrelle Revis, didn’t make a catch until 11:56 remained and finished with just two receptions for 28 yards. Palmer was out of rhythm (or terrible to say the least) and the Bengals will end the season as just another flop team that lays an egg in the playoffs.

Where to go from here: the Bengals can build on their young talented defense, but if there was ever a quarterback who eludes the criticism it would be Carson Palmer. Palmer has been awful in the last month and doesn’t see nearly as much blame as he should, this team needs a shake up on offense.

Packers Overtime Giveaway

Best game of the weekend by far, the Green Bay Packers came back from unspeakable odds to tie the game and head to overtime. Unfortunately the heartbreak for Packers fans was felt twice, first with the blowout first half, and then with the fumble in overtime, but a great effort was put forward by the cheeseheads. Rodgers was 28 of 42 for 422 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception.

Where to go from here: straight up, the Packers are loaded with young talent. When the bitter taste left from this game passes, the Green Bay Packers should be an elite team in the NFC next season. However, an improved pass rush is needed for the next level.

Wildcard Preview:

Baltimore Ravens- New England Patriots

I guess the two most pertinent things when looking at the New England Patriots against the Baltimore Ravens Wildcard match-up would be the injury to Patriots record setting receiver Wes Welker and the fact that the Ravens have never beaten the Patriots.

Ever.

Now, if history does indeed repeat itself, then this game doesn’t even need to be played. But that’s exactly the kind of fire and locker room fodder that teams like the hard nosed Ravens use to motivate themselves. Patriots receiver Randy Moss is going to see a lot of double coverage with Ed Reed shadowing him over the top. That’s a recipe for disaster for Tom Brady and company, because face it – no quarterback wants Reed targeting his number one wideout.

At least with Welker in the game, Reed’s efforts would be divided, but the Ravens have only ONE proven receiver to cover and that’s Moss himself.

Maybe it’s my love for the AFC North, maybe it’s because the Ravens are looking extremely tough to me after having to fight and scrape to simply get into the playoffs, but I’m liking the crew from Baltimore to pull this one out in the end.

Call me crazy, I’ve heard it before, but Joe Flacco is in nothing short of elite company. He is the fifth most productive quarterback within their first two years in the league.

The other guys on that list?

Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Drew Bledsoe, and Jeff Garcia.

Not bad company to be in at all I don’t think.

Add to that the fact that he is one of only four quarterbacks since the 1970 merger to lead his team into the playoffs in his first two years in the NFL. The others on that short list are Ben Roethlisberger, Marino, and Bernie Kosar.

Not to mention the Ravens have both Willis McGahee and Ray Rice in the backfield. Rice has been nothing short of unstoppable, leading the team in receptions along with amassing 1,339 yards on the ground.

The Patriots on the other hand are going to have to look at Julian Edelman with Welker out. The best news for the Patriots is that Reed may or may not appear in a limited role after nursing injuries throughout the month of December.

Wes Welker Blows Out His Knee

3 Plays into the Houston Texans game Wes Welker catches a small slant pattern and goes down like a ton of bricks. He walked off the the field but then later needed to be carted into the locker room. Welker is a major weapon in the Patriots offense and without him the playoffs are surely lacking a excellent offensive target. We will update you when the more is known about the injury.

Other breaking news is the secret injury of  Tom Brady.

Quarterback Tom Brady has played the last several games with three broken ribs, CBS Sports reported Sunday. Brady was quoted in saying “Close game. Blowout. We get behind. I’m expecting to play the whole game,” he said. “I wouldn’t see why I wouldn’t.”

But now, expect a number of players to be pulled with the scare to Welker

Top 10 Fantasy Football Playoff Duds

GridironExperts250px

How many folds, creases, and highlighted sections of your fantasy football magazine mentioned that you would put together a wicked fantasy team only to have a handful of blue chip players sell you out in the playoffs? If your fantasy league started it’s post season this week (most did) you’ve dedicated at least 30+ minutes of your work week to mentioning how bad you were robbed by your go-to fantasy players.

Gridiron Experts did it’s best to mention the fact that the Bears play tough against the Packers and Aaron Rodgers, or that you should weigh your options before starting the Steelers defense, but hey…we don’t have a crystal ball.

The following are fantasy football weekly regulars  that choked in week 14 and took your fantasy hopes down with their crappy performance.

10. Calvin JohnsonCalvin Johnson of the Lions
The Detroit Lions had a bad match-up week 14 against the Baltimore Ravens on the road, and the fantasy results for one of the most electrifying WR’s in the game was frustrating. With Culpepper under center nobody thought the Lions were going to steal a win, but scoring points shouldn’t have been that difficult. The Ravens have been burned all season against the pass, and with a deep target like Johnson fantasy owners refused to bench the talented receiver in hopes of getting some pity points. Instead Calvin Johnson had only 4 catches for 37 yards, making him our number 10 dud on the fantasy football letdown list.

9. Donald Driver

After taking over as the number one receiving target in Green Bay, Donald Driver has become a secret weapon for fantasy owners. His draft value at the start of the season has him now being called one of the best mid-round sleepers of the ‘09 season, but his performance crushed fantasy owners week 14. Driver, usually a go-to target, had only 2 catches for 11 yards against the Bears, a season low that fantasy football fans didn’t want to see.

8. Ben Worthlisberger (ouch)

The Steelers are done, and so are you if you started Roethlisberger against the Browns. When the schedule came out back in April, keeper league owners were laughing when they saw their first round fantasy playoff match-up, while others circled it as a great QB option as a sleeper. Big Ben played poorly on the road in Cleveland putting up only 201 passing yards. In week 6 against the Browns,
