NFL Free Agency: Quick Thoughts & Insights

Chicago Bears Sign Peppers

$91.5 million contract with $42 million in guarantees is a big price to pay to upgrade an already strong defense. The Chicago Bears don’t have a 1st or 2nd round pick in this years draft, so new additions have to be made through free agency. The Pepper’s signing will put a smile on any Chicago Bears fan’s face, but was the need for a defensive end such a high priority?  The Bears will have high expectations for this pro-bowl player and defensive unit.

Bears Add RB Taylor Into The Mix

While the signing of Julius Peppers is the headline of every site today, the addition of RB Chester Taylor in my opinion is just as big of an upgrade for the Bears. The Bears lost Brian Urlacher last year, which resulted in trouble stopping the run, but the defense was still above average. The biggest struggle for Chicago was running the ball; the Bears were ranked 29th in the league last year and couldn’t crack a 100 yards per game average.

Ravens Trade For Boldin

Out of nowhere the Ravens pulled off a trade for Anquan Boldin. The addition of Boldin gives the Ravens a true No. 1 receiver after letting Derrick Mason walk. Fantasy Football owners might not be happy as the Ravens are not exactly a passing juggernaut like the Cardinals.

Dolphins Sign Dansby

Karlos Dansby and the Dolphins agreed to terms on a five-year contract that will make the free agent the highest-paid linebacker in the NFL. Dansby has been a starter since his rookie season, and he has played both inside and outside linebacker. He should be a perfect fit in Miami.

Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 2)

It’s a little early to be predicting the first round of the NFL Draft, yet people love to speculate what teams will do (Mel Kiper 9.0 by March). Every year Gridiron Experts refuses to post a Mock Draft too early, so instead we’re posting a 3 part team needs mock draft, giving an educated guess to what teams might be thinking.

Not every position that is lacking on a NFL squad has to be filled with a first round pick. There are still a ton of free agents that are about to hit the open market, and second year players that can step in now that they have a year under them, and the first few weeks of March should completely change the draft. So here is a look at the NFL Draft based on how teams are sitting at the moment.

Read the First Article: Team Needs Mock Draft (Part 1)

11) Denver Broncos Team Needs: DT | DE | WR | QB

Strange to see Denver this high on the board considering the fast start to the season with new coach Josh McDaniel’s. The Broncos completely fell apart in the final month of the season, losing 4 games in a row, including losses to the Chiefs and Raiders.

The Broncos will likely try to improve their running defense through free agency and could target an offensive playmaker with pick 10. The Brandon Marshall trade rumors have started to fire up, causing many mock draft experts to target the top wide receiver landing in Denver.

Demaryius Thomas is high in our books, but a broken foot could hurt his stock value, making Dez Bryant a strong favorite. There is also a chance that if a top QB is available at 10 the Broncos could fill the shoes left by Jay Cutler. Either way the Broncos are sitting strong at pick 10 to take the best player available without the huge rookie money at the top of the draft.

12) Miami Dolphins Team Needs: WR | LB | SS

The Dolphins had injuries to key players in ‘09, but did an amazing job filling position spots. Players stepped up week after week to fill roles unlike any other team. The Dolphins are a diamond in the rough; if they can stay healthy and add a couple playmakers, this team could challenge for the AFC East division title.

This young team is a year older and wiser now, and will try to grow on the accomplishments of the ‘09 season. Personally Gridiron Experts would like to see this pick used on the offensive side of the ball, and we’re sure fans would agree. Adding a WR that can stretch the field would be ideal for this running attack, yet the team has enough rookies, and leadership would be nice as well.

We think trading this pick to a team like Arizona for a smart, tough WR like Anquan Boldin would be a great move. At 29 the trade wouldn’t be pick for player, but if a mid round pick came with Boldin, the Dolphins would walk away happy. Gridiron Experts sees pick 12 the first traded away pick of the draft, either down to gain more picks, or to another team for a veteran leader. The Dolphins are already a young team and need to add talent and wisdom now.

13) San Francisco 49er’s Team Needs: OT | WR | SS | KR

The only thing the 49er’s need to do this offseason is cut Takeo Spikes. Why? Because the veteran linebacker is a playoff curse. In the 12 years that Takeo Spikes has been in the NFL he has never been a part of a team that has made the playoffs…wow!

The 49er’s don’t really have any massive needs on the team, despite what some may say about QB Alex Smith.

Alex Smith was solid down the stretch and should have done just enough to have earned another opportunity to start for the 49er’s next season. There is a chance that Smith could succeed and lead this team into the post season if a smart offensive system can be installed that this young club can get behind.  Keep in mind we’re being optimistic, as newly hired offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye II doesn’t come with an impressive resume. Raye has never run an offense that has ranked high in any category that mattered, and his hiring makes no sense in the direction the

Top 10 Fantasy Surprises of 2009

10)  Thomas Jones- This 31 year old running back was not high on draft boards, mainly due to his age. Thomas Jones proved his worth in fantasy football in 09 and has already surpassed his rushing total from last season with 1324 yards and still one game to go. If Jones can punch in a TD on Sunday he will match his rushing touchdown total with 13 from a year ago.

9) Hines Ward- One of two players we recommended in our draft article: 5 Fantasy Players You’ll Overlook For A Rookie . Ward continues to impress lucky fantasy owners who drafted him late with his solid performance. Ward has racked up 1106 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns this year with still a game to go.

8 ) Brett Favre-  A fan favorite no doubt, but the average fantasy football fan held Favre’s value as their second quarterback after what happened to him in New York last year. Who knew? The old timer rolls out of the pocket with a quick burst and has arm strength that can still compete with the best of them. Favre is only 114 passing yards away from cracking 4000, he has been a weekly starter for most fantasy owners and has a great touchdown to INT ratio.

7) Steve Smith (NYG)- Smith was not looked at as the number one receiver at one point of the year, but after 97 rec and a game to go it’s safe to say he is a reliable target.

Waiver Wire Sleepers Week 14

We’re getting down to the nitty-gritty. Most leagues have two or less regular season games left, while many leagues start their playoffs this week. That means you need to scour the Waiver Wire for a gem or two if your current roster isn’t boosting your confidence heading into Week 14.

Stay updated with NFL Soups’ Breaking News, and then hit our other top fantasy pieces to get all the information you need this week to be successful and keep your fantasy team alive.

The following are the top guys available in at least 50% of leagues:

Vince Young, QB, Tennessee Titans (Available in 63% of leagues)

Young and Alex Smith (below) continue to be available in over 60% of leagues a piece, yet churn out respectable fantasy days on a regular basis. Young’s Titans didn’t hand the Colts their first loss this week, but Young was able to throw for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Needless to say, if you’re depending on Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, or a rookie passer, Young would be a solid upgrade for your playoff run.

Alex Smith, QB, San Francisco 49ers (66%)

Smith continues to perform at a high level, responding with a career high 310 yards, while also throwing two scores and no picks, a week after throwing three touchdowns in a game for the second time this season. Smith has the 49ers’ offense running smoothly, and even though it hasn’t added up to wins, he’s still a decent fantasy starter, and could help a team in need.

Chad Henne, QB, Miami Dolphins (90%)

Henne is growing up right before our eyes, as he dropped in two touchdowns and 335 yards passing against the New England Patriots. He’s still a bit risky to use due to his inexperience, but with his solid progression and the help of his strong running game, he’s at least a safe bet to carry over this success into Week 14.

Correll Buckhalter, RB, Denver Broncos (67%)

Buckhalter is clearly still a big part of the Broncos’ rushing offense, and even though he normally will get less total touches than Knowhon Moreno, his ability to make things happen with the ball sustains his moderate fantasy value. He cracked 100+ rushing yards last week in Denver’s second straight win, and should continue to run the ball as Denver goes up against an Indy pass defense that is still performing well.

Rock Cartwright, RB, Washington Redskins (68%)

With Clinton Portis likely out once again in Week 14, Cartwright should get the majority of the carries, and could be a quality RB2 with a nice match-up against a soft Oakland Raiders defense. His total yardage so far has been weak, but the touches are high enough to warrant taking a chance on him.

Kenny Britt, WR, Tennessee Titans (75%)

As Vince Young goes, so goes Kenny Britt. The rookie has burst onto the scene since start Justin Gage went down with a back injury, and has really never looked back. He continue his solid success with 46 yards and a touchdown in a loss against the Colts, and has a fantastic match-up in Week 14. He should make for a quality WR3 start the rest of the way.

Next up: St. Louis Rams

Match-up Rating: 5/5

Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay Packers (82%)

If there was any question about Finley’s role in the Packers offense, it was answered on Monday night. Finley caught seven balls for 70+ yards

Thursday Night Preview: Dolphins at Panthers

MIAMI DOLPHINS VS. CAROLINA PANTHERS-3

Injured running backs on both sides of the ball might make for a sloppy quarterback attack Thursday night. The Miami Dolphins had to put Ronnie Brown on IR, making their playoff chances that much more difficult. The Panthers also have both of their two-headed monster runners less than 100% for this match-up, but with so much on the line, DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart will likely suit up and play hard. Other key injuries for the Panthers: LT Jordan Gross, Charles Godfrey.

Panthers Quarterback Jake Delhomme has played three somewhat mistake-free games after throwing 13 interceptions in the first six, and will look to test the Dolphins defense early. Steve Smith shines in prime time and should have a good game in what could save the Panthers season. Believe it or not, but the Panthers are one of the hotter NFL teams these days; winning 4 of their last five including 3 in a row.

For the Dolphins, Chad Henne will have to up his game now that the Wildcat will have to be re-tooled. Not just anyone can run the Wildcat and we might see more standard formations from the Dolphins tonight until a replacement is found. Henne is raw but has huge upside; this game will be an excellent test for the young talent. With Ricky Williams’ best years behind him, expect to see a couple new faces throughout the game. As far as fantasy football goes, this game might create a few new hot pick-ups in next weeks waiver wire.

The way we see it

Unlike last Thursday nights game (which we nailed) this game should be exciting and full of entertainment. If D.Williams plays you could see a high scoring game, but it will be the defenses that will really shine tonight. We expect both teams to apply a ton of pressure which should create at least one turnover each. In the end, home field advantage and the more experienced, healthier Panthers will take this one at home. CAROLINA 24-20

Ronnie Brown Is For The YearRonnie Brown

The Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown will be placed on injured reserve after being injured in Sunday’s victory over the Buccaneers. Ronnie Brown, the center piece of the wildcat will be done for the year with an injured right foot that turned out to be way more serious than people had thought. Brown will see a specialist Thursday morning to further evaluate the specifics of his foot problem. -Dolphin fans are no doubt hanging there heads today.

Teams On The Rise

Gridiron ExpertsRising to the occasion

Schedule strength, weather, injuries, spy gate… these are all things that effect your teams’ success each season in the NFL. Being able to handle these issues, or having the ability to handle them in the future, will earn you the title of one who “rises to the occasion”. Heading into week 8 all of the teams in the league have had to deal with the season’s complexities; here’s a look at the ones who have dealt with them the best over the past few weeks:

MIA100

Running Wild(cat)

The Miami Dolphins are back on the rise after losing quarterback Chad Pennington for the season. The Dolphins now have it together with Chad Henne performing more than adequately in Pennington’s absence; Henne seems to get more comfortable in the offense as he continues to tally up the starts. Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are a fearsome tandem; Williams has been performing as if he never took a puff, and Brown could virtually be the QB for this team. Throw in a Bill Parcells type defense and you’ve got the recipe for some potential success in this league.  A 2-4 record may be difficult to overcome, but there is plenty of football still left to play.

HOU100

Texans Bullrush

If the Houston Texans can defeat the Bills tomorrow they will be staring at their first 5-3 start in franchise history. Over the past few seasons this team has displayed its potential and is now finally finding results. In the last two weeks this team has defeated the highly touted Bengals and the 49ers. Matt Schaub is leading the league in both passing yards and touchdowns (really, he is,

Henne No Stranger To Emergency Starts

The Miami Dolphins planned to groom Chad Henne to become their starting quarterback in 2010. Instead, Henne got 20 minutes of a 23-13 loss to the Chargers and one week of practice to prepare for his first start after Chad Pennington dislocated his shoulder and tore his labrum.

Many football fans outside of Miami, Ann Arbor, Mich. (where Henne played college ball at UM) and West Lawn, Penn. (his hometown) had all but forgotten about the fourth QB taken in the 2008 NFL Draft. So when Henne turned in an energized 38-10 pasting of the Buffalo Bills in his first start last week, Miami’s first win of ’09, many were left wondering how Henne could lead such a charge with so little preparation.

Those who had followed him since his Michigan days already knew the answer to that question: this wasn’t the first time Chad Henne had to take an offense’s reins in an emergency. Heck, the last time he was a college true freshman given only 48 hours notice. Michigan entered the 2004 season ranked 8th in the country with Big Ten Conference and national title hopes within reach. However, starting quarterback Matt Gutierrez began feeling soreness in his throwing shoulder during the week leading up to the Wolverines’ season opener against Miami (OH). The diagnosis: a torn labrum. Gutierrez would be lost for the season. So, with just two days taking first-team reps, Chad Henne led Michigan to a 43-10 win over Miami (OH). And while the Wolverines finished the season with a disappointing three losses and ranked 12th in the nation, Henne enjoyed his best statistical season as a collegian.

Playing alongside star running back Mike Hart and wide receivers Braylon Edwards, Jason Avant and Steve Breaston, Henne tied Elvis Grbac’s UM single-season record for TD passes with 25, to go along with 2,743 yards passing.
Henne and the Wolverines struggled to handle expectations in his sophomore campaign. The team entered the season ranked 4th, only to finish unranked with a 7-5 record.

But in 2006, Henne led Michigan back to elite status through the first 11 games of the season. Starting with a preseason ranking of 15th, the Wolverines upset then-third-ranked Notre Dame in Week 3. In the game, Chad Henne completed 13 of 22 passes for 220 yards, threw three

Worst Two Minute Drive Ever

Worst Two Minute Drive EverNice

After dominating all night with the ground game, the Miami Dolphins found themselves late in the fourth quarter with a little over three minutes and two time outs to lead a winning drive. Peyton Manning barely broke a sweat moving up and down the field scoring at will, but after dissecting the defense at the line of scrimmage hitting Pierre Garcon for a 48 yard score, it had seemed like he almost left too much time on the clock.

Bad clock management is an understatement as Pennington looked like he had no idea what to do with the offense – it was sad. There was one shot into the end zone (that wasn’t picked off) but aside from that, running plays and a QB sneak were called on their two minute drive that was almost laughable. At one point the Dolphins let the play clock run all the way down to 1 second before calling a timeout, it was almost like they thought they had the lead.

This game was the greatest example of how the Wildcat offense is nothing more than a gimmick. When the game was on the line, the Dolphins needed the bread and butter pro style offense, not a bunch of trick running plays.
