The one factor that many people are not adding into the mix in Raiders training camp this summer is the constant battle between new rookie Heward-Bey and Nnamdi Asomugha. To become the best, you need to play against the best, and while many want to cut the rookie down (including Gridiron Experts), it sure helps practicing against one of the leagues elite corners.

“There’s some easy giveaways right now. I’ll talk to him about that stuff,” Asomugha said. “I saw his eyes. He can’t give it away with his eyes, but this was his first practice. I wasn’t watching him so I don’t know how well he did. But he has speed and speed is always a threat” after tipping a pass from JaMarcus Russell. Speed kills but skill rules; while the Raiders love drafting the fastest players, many pro receivers thrive on route running and reading defensive coverages. Marvin Harrsion was not a burner, yet he always seemed to get open. A player like Heyward-Bey needs to learn from Pro Bowler Asomugha, as he could help the first rounder reach the next level.

“Coach Tom Cable praised Heyward-Bey for his intelligence and ability to quickly learn an NFL offense. But Heyward-Bey knows the adjustment won’t be easy, saying at one time it was “too bad you can’t redshirt here.” To read more about the Raiders mini camp click here
