5 Most Important Things a New Head Coach Must Do

In the last few years, there have been quite a few coaches to come and go, barely making a dent in the NFL record books.  From Nick Saban, Bobby Patrino to Art Shell and Steve Spurrier, NFL owners continue to make the wrong moves when hiring a head coach. Some believe the pressure is to too great, and that only a handfull of people have what it takes to coach in the NFL. We disagree, and offer the following Gridiron Experts advice:

5 most important things a new head coach must do

#5 Grow a Mustache

Mustaches win championships! Think about it, some of the best coaches in the game are sporting the cookie dusters; Tony Dungy, Jeff Fisher, Romeo Crennel, Mike Holmgren, even Bill Cowher had one. A mustache demands respect; sure you may look like a 70’s porn star, or a Ned Flanders look-a-like, but I bet you’ll have a winning season!

#4 Make a Huge Laminated Play Sheet

Make it look like you have an unlimited arsenal of weapons and trick plays. If you don’t have a lot a plays, fill the play sheet with other things: a grocery list, lyrics to your favorite song, directions to the stadium, or do what Andy Reid does and put take-out menus on your play sheet.

#3 Practice Your Close Up for the Camera

People love the Gruden grin, and miss Bill Cowher’s scowl. Make sure you perfect your angry face, because nothing looks worse than a confused expression or a blank stare.

#2 Become the Zen Master when Giving Interviews

Some of the best coaches in the league give the most boring interviews. Reporters will say anything to push buttons or get a stir out of you. Unless you want to be in a beer commercial, I suggest going to jedi school to learn how to control your temper.

#1 Customize Your Wardrobe.

A great head coach needs to stand out. You can do anything, from cutting the sleeves off your hooded sweatshirt to sporting a suit and tie. Whatever it is, you need to make it your own; Tony Dungy likes his turtle necks, while Andy Reid wears his all black one-piece space suit. Be creative but don’t copy-cat, the Tom Landry hat has been done and retired.
