Marques Colston – WR, New Orleans Saints
Colston and  Bush, both coming off of microfracture surgery, are reportedly entering training camp at 100 percent. = Fanasty owners need not to worry, camp is long and injuries will have time to heal.
Brian Robiskie – WR, Cleveland Browns
Browns agreed to terms with second-round WR Brian Robiskie on a four-year contract. = At this point, any rookie who shows up for camp on time has a slight edge. There are more than a few fantasy rookies still in contract talks, and the Browns getting Robiskie early helps the offense.
Lance Moore - WR, New Orleans Saints
Saints WR Lance Moore (shoulder surgery) and Adrian Arrington (hamstring) will open training camp on the active/PUP list.  = The Saints are banged up, but all should be ready for week 1.
Champ Bailey – CB, Denver Broncos
Broncos placed CB Champ Bailey on the active/PUP list for the beginning of training camp.
JaMarcus Russell – QB, Oakland Raiders
JaMarcus admitted Thursday that he didn’t report to Raiders training camp in ideal physical condition. = Good idea JaMarcus, the Raiders have total faith in you…so much so that the Raiders signed Jeff Garcia this offseason. Your job is not a lock and you show up to camp out of shape? Things could get interesting here.  …Continue reading Fantasy File: Quick Hits & Camp News

New York Jets 2009 Preview

New York Jets 2009 PreviewJets

NFL odds are up for 2009 and few football betting experts can agree on what the New York Jets’ fate will be in 2009. On one hand, an already-solid defense gained a bunch of key personnel in the offseason and the running game is deep. On the other hand, they’ll likely depend on a rookie quarterback to carry the passing game. Can the “D” support the offense until Mark Sanchez gets comfortable?

Offseason Transactions

The Jets were among the NFL’s busiest teams this offseason and the defense in particular has some noteworthy newcomers. Former Pro-Bowl cornerback Lito Sheppard may not be the same player as he was in Philadelphia, but he’s a welcome addition to the secondary. Linebacker Bart Scott was expensive to poach from Baltimore but he should pay immediate dividends. The biggest addition of all may be new head coach Rex Ryan, who was highly successful as Baltimore’s defensive co-ordinator.

Offensively, the Jets built through the draft, drafting inexperienced but highly touted leader Mark Sanchez third overall to be their franchise quarterback. A less hyped pick who could have an impact this year is running back Shonn Greene, who is a thicker RB than Thomas Jones and Leon Washington and could get goal line work.

Mike Vick, Camp Rumors & Rookie Signings

Written by: Mike Rodriguez | Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 | 0 Comments

Mike Vick RumorsNFL Cheerleader

PFT.com has formed a list of teams who have stated unequivocally that they have no interest in Falcons quarterback Mike Vick.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Detroit Lions, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and the Seattle Seahawks…..The Bengals just joined the list (SI.com)

Somebody needs to create a survival pool for Vick at this point. Teams are racing to the media to announce they’re not interested. I personally thought Washington would make a move for him, not because they need a QB but just for the fact that Dan Snyder’s favorite hobby is to spend money. The other surprise is maybe Seattle; Hasselbeck is getting up there in age while Vick’s ex-coach Jim Mora may have the perfect spot for the guy.

Rookie Signings

Wood agrees to terms with Bills

Skins sign third-round DE pick Jarmon

Cards sign second-round DE pick Brown

Still a record number of 1st round picks un-signed. In fact, rumors are that some agents are playing the “You come to us” approach which is never going to work. Think about it in terms that we understand guys: You are a rookie, what are the odds the hot blond comes and picks you up? -next to nothing

Favre To Stay Retired

Favre To Stay Retiredbrett favre wrangler jeans ad

Minnesota’s quarterback options are now Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels? Viking fans might now start cheering for Mike Vick. These two veteran QB’s, who were expected to compete for the job before the Favre drama began for a second straight year, are now back in the spotlight. Damage control might be needed as Jackson and Rosenfels probably feel like the ugly friends on the team who missed out on the hot date for prom.

I have to admit this time I thought he was coming back, but it turns out Favre told Childress he didn’t believe he had enough in him to get through a full season, as was the case last year for the Jets. Although I had figured that by playing for the Vikings, who are a run first team, Favre’s workload could be stretched over 16+ games. Oh well, there’s always Wrangler commercials to be made.

Jim Johnson Passes at 68

Written by: Diesel | Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 | 0 Comments

johnson-734702

Jim Johnson passed away Tuesday afternoon at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with cancer. The 22 year veteran as an NFL assistant was one of the top defensive masterminds in NFL history. Four of his defensive assistants have gone on to successful careers with other NFL franchises: Steve Spagnuolo (head coach of the St. Louis Rams), John Harbaugh (head coach of the Baltimore Ravens), Ron Rivera (defensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers) and Leslie Frazier (defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings). To read more click here

Jim Johnson will be surely missed in Philly, and while some might think that the window was beginning to close for the Eagles, watch for veteran Eagle players to become more motivated than ever after this tragic loss.

Fantasy Football Draft Strategy: “The Old School Patriot”

Written by: DC | Monday, July 27th, 2009 | 0 Comments

Fantasy Football Draft Strategy: “The Old School Patriot”- DCfootballimage

There are probably a dozen names for this particular fantasy football draft strategy; Gridiron Experts has dubbed it The Old School Patriot. One reason is because it was used in a fantasy pool for a championship win back before the New England Patriots were loaded with big name players like Moss and Welker, and before Brady was well, Tom Terrific. But mainly this strategy was named after Bill Belichick and his recruiting process: find players who are hard working, blue collar guys.

This draft strategy might not be for everyone, but we thought it would still raise a few eyebrows for those who have given up on traditional methods.

Like the New England Patriots, your goal is to draft players that flat out produce and have no chance of inconsistency. That means you avoid players like Brian Westbrook, Ladainian Tomlinson, and Steven Jackson and draft players like Frank Gore, Clinton Portis, and Jones-Drew. Players like Brandon Marshall and H.Ward are in, and players like Terrell Owens and Roddy White are out. I know this may seem crazy to just avoid top players, but there is a method behind the madness. Basically you are trying to build a team that does nothing but produce week in and week out, in other words a team with no drama. The idea behind this draft strategy is that if everyone contributes as a whole unit, then you will put up enough points to win every week. No more relying on one guy or a big day to rack up enough point to get by, everybody does enough as a team to produce enough points to win.

lfl5

To prepare you must do a little homework; get yourself a top 200 player rankings list either online or from a magazine and highlight key players. Look at each players stats week by week and decide on whether a player is a consistent fantasy producer of points or a roller coaster of inconsistency.

For Quarterbacks you need to look for how many games each QB was without a touchdown, if it was more than two, do not highlight him. Have two different colors of highlighters, one for average and the other for above average. Highlight players above average if they have at least one touchdown a game and more than three games with three touchdowns or more.

For Running Backs look for a player that does one of two things: either gets 100 yards per game rushing/receiving combined, or a touchdown and 40 yards rushing/receiving combined. If a running back has more than three games where he doesn’t reach this goal, don’t highlight him. You might be surprised at the results.

With Receivers you are looking for receptions; you want a guy who gets his catches, so highlight players based on the amount of work load the player gets per game. If he is known for one big play every other week, you don’t want him.

Tight Ends are almost always inconsistent unless you have one of the top players. Unlike other draft advice articles we have written, The Old School Patriot requires you to grab one of the top tight ends to build a consistent weekly producer. The real skill here is to show patience with tight ends.

Kickers and Defenses need to be taken late and should be looked at as extras to your team. There is no way to predict a consistent kicker, but when drafting defenses look for teams with great defensive lines. Pressure causes sacks and may force interceptions.

Use previous years for injured players, you wouldn’t leave Brady un-highlighted. After you have gone through and formed your board, your draft strategy should become much clearer. Even tough decisions in the later rounds seem somewhat easy now.
