New England Patriotism- Daniel Phillips

Only one team in the history of the modern 16 game NFL season has achieved perfection: The New England Patriots. Last year Tom Brady was derailed in the first game of the season, which virtually shattered any hopes of a repeat performance from this unit. With Tom Brady looking fully mended from his knee injury, the Pats seem confident that they will return to being the unstoppable powerhouse from 2 seasons ago. Nobody these days would dare to create a power ranking of the league without putting the Patriots at number 1, but is this team back? Can they roll over the league in shoot out type wins like they did only two seasons ago?

Gridiron Experts believes the Patriots should see a successful 2009 season, however nowhere near as fruitful as 2007; schedule strength, division growth, roster, and the health of Brady and his supporting cast will be the reasons why.

In 2007 the Pats arguably had a difficult schedule, facing many prolific teams of that year, such as: the Cowboys and Colts (13-3), Chargers (11-5), Browns, Steelers and Giants (10-6). Six of the 16 teams they faced that year had at least 10 wins, seven had winning records. This means that the Pats truly were a dominant force, only receiving a well earned break when playing their division. This year again the Pats will face six teams who have earned 10 plus wins the previous season: the Panthers, Dolphins, Falcons, Titans, Colts, and the Ravens, along with two others with winning records. The Patriots will have their journey to the Super Bowl littered with roadblocks and detours, but the only real difference this time will be in their own back yard.

randy-moss-vs-buffalo-bills1One thing that afforded the Pats perfection in 2007 was the poor play of their division. The Bills, Jets, and Dolphins had combined 12 wins, the next year they had a combined 27. The Jets have lost Brett Favre, but have strengthened many other areas of need. The old gun slinging Favre might have been a blessing in disguise, as his arm had fallen off down the stretch last season. As always it’s tough to predict what one is going to see out of this Bills team, however T.O. vs. Randy Moss should create some interesting battles for being the best. The Dolphins should continue to shock and awe their way into winning more games, adding more pieces to the puzzling Wildcat offence, while continuing to be the underdog on defence in the league ranking 1st in turnover ratio. This division is nowhere close to the level it was playing in 2007, which in turn makes the schedule much morep1_bill3 difficult for New England. We feel the AFC East teams could steal as many as 2 wins away from New England this year.

This is not the same Patriot roster from 2007 either, but may be arguably much deeper. For instance at the RB position: Laurence Maroney, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, and Fred Taylor will all get carries in a massive rotation. Being originally a run first team, look for a stronger running game to drain quarters opposed to having Brady throw all day. The core of wide receivers has only gotten stronger and wiser with the addition of Joey Galloway. The Pats have always had dominant O and D lines, and they will continue to do so this year. As well there are more than a plethora of line-backers; defensive rookie Jerod Mayo will be more confident in his second year, while youth in Pierre Woods will fill in the hole left by Miketom brady injury Vrabel. The only thing that really stands out as a big shake-up from the 2007 season is the loss of the starting cornerbacks, Asante Samuel and Ellis Hobbs. New England has addressed this sufficiently with the addition of Leigh Bodden and Shawn Springs, but only time can tell if this tandem will be as successful as its prior counterparts.

The Pats have incredibly deep roster at most positions, but is it deep where it counts? Tom Brady doesn’t have a magic remedy named Matt Cassel this year. And if Bodden or Springs go down or struggle, the next best option is third year Mike Richardson at corner?

This is still a team to be reckoned with, but there is no way they are repeating a perfect season. It is highly unlikely that we will ever see a perfect season again from any team, but some loyal fans are convinced that these Patriots can do it again. With an arguably weaker team, harder schedule, and recovering knee at quarterback, we don’t see this happening. Many quarterbacks struggle in their first year back from major knee surgery, just look at Daunte Culpepper, Carson Palmer, and Donovan McNabb. Tom Brady did injure himself in week 1 and will have more time to heal, but to think re-injuring his knee isn’t worrying him a little would be a lie. The Patriots are projected to win 12.5 games this season, but we think it’ll be more like 10 or 11.

Cardinals: One Hit Wonders, or Threat to Repeat?-Mike RodriguezLarry Fitzgerald

This year the Cardinals are projected to win 8.5 games, are 15/2 to win the NFC Championship game, and 15/1 to win the Super Bowl. Are these Vegas odds making your head spin? Well, to summarize, the odds that the Arizona Cardinals are going back to Super Bowl, or even the playoffs, are not good.

At first glance, the Cardinals chances seem great. Pro bowler Kurt Warner, despite his age of 37, is still arguably one of the top QB’s in the NFL. Safety Adrian Wilson leads a much underrated defensive unit that played great down the stretch last year. The Cards also have one of the most lethal receiving cores in the game. Locking up Anquan Boldin would make everyone feel a little better about the 2009 season, but the fact he wasn’t traded is a good sign. Larry Fitzgerald is an elite playmaker who needs Boldin in the line up to free up double (even triple) coverage.

The NFC West was a walking band-aid last year, and should not be considered as weak as many people think. With some of the improvements made this off-season, there is no way any one team will win the division with ease. The Seattle Seahawks grabbed Houshmandzadeh in free agency, helping a laughable receiving core get better quickly; key players Deion Brach and Matt Hasselbeck are both returning from injury. A fresh start with new coach Jim Mora could also Arizona Cardinalsbe good for some of these seasoned Seattle veterans. Not since the 1992 season have the Seattle Seahawks had such a low win total. The shocking 4-12 season will be huge motivation to improve quickly and challenge for a playoff spot.
The Rams lost playmaker Torry Holt and veteran LT Orlando Pace, but look somewhat strong after bringing in the New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to lead the pack. The Rams had an excellent draft and even made a few solid free agent signings.
The San Francisco 49ers, who were ghosts in free agency, came away laughing after Oakland passed on Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree at the NFL Draft in April. The only question now is who’s going to lead this young team? The right quarterback might have the 49ers finally pulling out of the repair shop with a serious muscle car.

The Cardinals didn’t get to the Super Bowl by default, they knocked off three strong offensive teams: Falcons, Panthers, and Eagles. With each playoff win the team grew more confidence, but an off-season of headaches may hurt the Cardinals 2009 season. Top teams always get picked apart in free agency, although losing as many starters as Arizona did hasn’t sat well with the loyal fan base, not to mention losing both their defensive and offensive coordinators Clancy Pendergast and Todd Haley.Cardinals Even with the additions of RB Beanie Wells and Safety Rashad Johnson in the draft, this team has the look of being dubbed a one hit wonder. Too many losses on defense and the shake up of the coaching staff will mean the offense will be forced to win games in a shoot out fashion. This is great news if you have fantasy players, but hard to rely on down the stretch of the NFL season. The Cardinals schedule isn’t easy, playing 4 out of 5 road games starting in the middle of November, while going up against many up and coming teams such as the Jaguars, Texans, Bears, and Packers. Gridiron Experts predicts anywhere between a 6 to 9 win season.

NFL Over/Under Season Win Totals-Mike Rodriguez

This is the Over and Under odds for team wins in the 2009 season. For those who don’t know, the numbers next to the win totals are the payouts as far as what you need to put up in order to place the bet. For example to bet on the Patriots to win Over 11.5 wins next year, you would have to put up $120 to win $100 (Over -120). If the odds are a positive number then it works the opposite way; for example to bet the Titans to not win more than 9.5 games next year (Under +120) you would win $120 on a $100 bet. It’s always easier to use a $100 bet to figure out how much you would need to bet, but is not required as a minimum to place a bet.

NFL TEAMS Odds to win Over Odds to win under
New England Patriots Over 11.5 (-120) Under 11.5
Pittsburgh Steelers Over 10.5 (-115) Under 10.5 (-115)
New York Giants Over 10 (-120) Under 10
Indianapolis Colts Over 10 (-120) Under 10
Philadelphia Eagles Over 9.5 (-145) Under 9.5 (+115)
San Diego Chargers Over 9.5 (-130) Under 9.5 (even)
Tennessee Titans Over 9 (-150) Under 9 (+120)
Dallas Cowboys Over 9 (-115) Under 9 (-115)
Minnesota Vikings Over 9 (-140) Under 9 (+110)
Green Bay Packers Over 9 (+105) Under 9 (-135)
Carolina Panthers Over 8.5 (even) Under 8.5 (-130)
Baltimore Ravens Over 8.5 (-160) Under 8.5 (+130)
Chicago Bears Over 8.5 (-150) Under 8.5 (+120)
Arizona Cardinals Over 8.5 (-120) Under 8.5
New Orleans Saints Over 8.5 (-170) Under 8.5 (+140)
Washington Redskins Over 8 (even) Under 8 (-130)
Houston Texans Over 8 (-115) Under 8 (-115)
Jacksonville Jaguars Over 8 (-115) Under 8 (-115)
New York Jets Over 7 (-140) Under 7 (+110)
Atlanta Falcons Over 8 (-135) Under 8 (+105)
Denver Broncos Over 7.5 (+110) Under 7.5 (-140)
Buffalo Bills Over 7.5 (-160) Under 7.5 (+130)
Seattle Seahawks Over 7.5 (-150) Under 7.5 (+120)
Cleveland Browns Over 7 (+125) Under 7 (-155)
Miami Dolphins Over 7 (-115) Under 7 (-115)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Over 6.5 (-140) Under 6.5 (+110)
Cincinnati Bengals Over 6 (-155) Under 6 (+125)
Kansas City Chiefs Over 6 (-130) Under 6 (even)
St Louis Rams Over 5.5 (-150) Under 5.5 (+120)
Oakland Raiders Over 5.5 (-140) Under 5.5 (+110)
Detroit Lions Over 5 (even) Under 5 (-130)

Here are a couple of bets that call out to me:

Washington Redskins Over 8 (even money) – The Skins had a good draft and added Albert Haynesworth in free agency so go ahead and start betting online. They won both games against the Eagles last year and played tough against the Cowboys & Giants. The schedule is in their favor as they visit the AFC West this year and get to play the Rams and Lions.

Miami Dolphins Over 7 (-115) – The Dolphins schedule is very difficult, but 7 wins is a little insulting. This team has made some real strides this off-season and should get at least 3 wins from their division. Throw in a couple home games with that draining Miami heat (that kills visiting teams), and they should be able to crack 8+ wins this year.

New England Patriots Under 11.5 (even money) – There’s no guarantee the Patriots are back to being a powerhouse. Sure Brady’s healthy, and the team hasn’t lost too many of their core players, but their schedule is brutal. Aside from the improved AFC East, the Pats face off against the Colts, Ravens, Falcons, Saints, Jaguars, and Panthers. To say the Patriots are only going to lose 4 games all year is a bold statement and a bad bet;the league is constantly changing, and any given Sunday a team can steal a win.

Grading the Draft: NFC East

Category : Dallas Cowboys, NFL Draft / Off Season, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins

Grading the Draft: NFC East
Washington RedskinsBrian Orakpo
1(13): DE Brian Orakpo – This former Texas Longhorn will line up alongside Pro Bowler Albert Haynesworth in a pass rush type role. Many thought of Orakpo as a converted linebacker in a 3-4 system, but the Skins want to cause chaos amongst their divisional quarterbacks on a regular basis. Great pick.
3(16): CB Kevin Barnes – Nickel corner with great size, will most likely be a special teamer for his first year. Good potential.
Other Moves: After Orakpo and Barnes, the Redskins draft consists of mostly long shot players, projects, and special teamers. With no 2nd round pick and 4 picks late on day two, the Redskins draft really revolves around Orakpo. While fans might have wanted to see them trade down and gather more picks, we think sitting at 13 and grabbing a starter to add to an already stacked defense was very smart.
Draft Grade: B

Philadelphia Eagles
1(19): WR Jeremy Maclin – Nobody was more surprised than us by this pick. Andy Reid is not one for drafting receivers early, but when a player like Maclin falls this far, maclinyou need to break old habits of picking lineman and grab the best player available. Maclin will be an instant starter in the Eagles pass first offense, and should line up all over the field. Maclin is a lot like DeSean Jackson, only bigger.
2(21): RB LeSean McCoy – Maybe the only place McCoy could play early. He has huge upside, great hands, and the size to punch holes up the middle. Many had wished he’d stayed in school, but a year or two behind Westbrook is more educational.
5(17): TE Cornelius Ingram – Another offensive weapon? Fans must be losing their minds. Andy Reid has finally spent picks improving the offense, getting quality weapons for McNabb. Ingram’s stock fell due to an ACL injury, but scouts should have overlooked the injury as his skills as a receiver are excellent. Ingram is one of the top receiving tight ends in this draft.
Other Moves: Trading the 28th overall pick to Buffalo for Jason Peters gives the Eagles a high grade off the bat, but spending the first 3 picks on offensive weapons seals the deal. The Eagles also acquired Ellis Hobbs from NE for late round picks, while also adding an excellent nickel corner in Victor Harris. Might have been Andy Reid’s best draft in years.
Draft Grade: A+ Includes Jason Peters &Ellis Hobbs trade

New York Giantshakeem nicks

1(29): WR Hakeem Nicks – Excellent receiver, and fits into the Giants system better than one might think. Nicks has great vision, plays tough, and adjusts well to poorly thrown balls (read into that how you want). Fans might have wanted Braylon or Anquan, but Nicks will do fine. Great pick.
2(13): LB Clint Sintim – Steal, we had Sintim going to the Falcons in the first round. This 6′3″, 260 lb linebacker will beef up the Giants, and will be a monster to watch for on every down.
3(28): OT William Beatty – Another great pick; Beatty also had a first round grade, giving the Giants an excellent start to the draft. Beatty will start most likely at guard or be used for depth, but he could become the starting right tackle sooner than many think.
3(21): WR Ramses Barden – Should find the field early, could fill the hole of Plaxico’s jump ball skills in the red zone. Good pick.
Other Moves: The Giants didn’t stop at Ramses Barden with grabbing excellent value in this draft class, on day 2 the G-Men snagged TE Travis Beckum for depth and RB Andre Brown who could replace Derrick Ward.
Draft Grade: A+ we loved the Giants draft, as they were patient yet productive with the needs at receiver and linebacker.

Dallas Cowboys
3(5): LB Jason Williams – Outstanding speed and quickness; the Cowboys were looking for depth in this draft, and Williams was a great start.
3(11): OT Robert Brewster – 50 game 4 year starter at Ball State as an Offensive Tackle. Will probably be moved to guard, but has the size, smarts, and feet to play at the next level. Good pick, adding depth.
4(1): QB Stephen McGee – Waste of a good player; Romo is young and there is no need for a backup QB after trading for Kitna. Great project for future, but could have been drafted later.
4(10): DE Victor Butler – Another player that will contribute on special teams; long shot to see playing time on defense.
4(20): DE Brandon Williams – Experts are saying he should have stayed in school, but the Cowboys see something in this kid. Williams has excellent pass rushing skills and a good frame to add muscle. Could be one of the gems of this draft class, good pick.
Other Moves: While no one thought the Cowboys would go through day one without a pick, day two turned out to be very productive. The Cowboys have gotten by far too long with no depth, and this draft should improve the little things that help win ball games. After drafting 5 players in the middle rounds, the Cowboys added another 7 players through rounds 5-7, grabbing everything from a kicker to a backup tight end. Time will be the ultimate test for this draft, as many of these players may not make the cut by week one. I’m sure the jury is still out for many fans.
Draft Grade: C -should have traded up.
