Can’t Put Out The Fire, Cutler To Go – DCCutler to Jets??

Enough is enough, the Denver Broncos are going to trade Cutler. After weeks of trying to smooth over the problems with Josh McDaniels, Denver has given up on kissing their quarterback’s ass. 25 year old Cutler has been unhappy ever since learning that McDaniels failed to inform him about trade talks in which the Broncos showed interest in Matt Cassel. Cassel wound up being traded by New England to Kansas City, and then Cutler asked to be traded.

The list of teams interested in Cutler is long; if  I had to make an early guess, I’d say that Cutler will be a Jet in a couple weeks. Why couldn’t they make this statement before we did our mock draft?

PFT.com is reporting that 6 teams are willing to trade for Cutler: Jets, Buccaneers, Bears, Lions, 49ers, Browns and the Jags

Eagles and Lions prepare to strike with 2 first rounders-Diesel
History has shown that a great draft can not only turn your team around but can take you to the playoffs overnight. Just ask the Miami Dolphins or Atlanta Falcons from last year. The Detroit Lions, who have 3 picks in the top 33, are hoping for a little draft magic as their last win was Dec 23, 2007. Despite the 0-16 season last year, the Lions do have some key players that they can build a team around, but with many holes to fill, Detroit needs to use their day one draft picks wisely.phi2

Unlike the Lions, the Eagles are not in a rebuilding mode, at least not yet. After losing more than a few key players in free agency, Philadelphia has an opportunity to pick them back up by plugging in rookies, which might even improve their chances since most of the players they lost were aging veterans.

Aside from each having two first round picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, the Lions and Eagles couldn’t be more different when it comes to the strategy of drafting players. The andyreidLions are risk takers, with their never say die attempt at getting a receiver and paying almost too much attention to the offense. Meanwhile, the Eagles love to play it safe; they have traded out of the first round the last two years and have a long history of drafting offensive and defensive linemen. While the Eagles strategy has proven to work for them, not one player under Andy Reid has won rookie of the year on either side of the ball, nor have they made a “sexy” pick in years. In a perfect world the fans would make the picks, but in our opinion, the Lions and Eagles need to adopt each others strategy.

The Lions know the odds of an instant turnaround are unlikely, and should plan for the future by drafting like the Eagles do, with offensive and defensive lineman that can play for you for years; Detroit should even consider trading down. The Eagles on the other hand need to finally take a shot at a couple offensive weapons to get them over the NFC Championship hump that has haunted them.

We realize that our Mock Draft contradicts this article, but what we think should happen won’t necessarily actually happen. These two teams have the chance to be easy winners with a growing number of prepared prospects ready for the pro level. If Lions fans get one offensive tackle they can use, they should consider themselves lucky, while Eagles fans should hope one of their two picks are used on a skill position, and that Andy Reid finally gives up on drafting underdog kids from small schools.

Team Needs: New Orleans Saints

New Orleans SaintsTeam Needs: New Orleans Saints
Gridiron Experts is randomly picking NFL teams to evaluate their off-season acquisitions. We are predicting their game plan heading into the NFL Draft, using last year’s stats as a guide for improvement.

To say the New Orleans Saints have a good offense is an understatement. It’s never a matter of if the Saints are going to score, it’s when and how often. The New Orleans passing game led by gunslinger Drew Brees dismantled teams in 2008, and with the development of Reggie Bush year after year, it’s safe to say this offense will continue to rack up points. The Saints averaged 28.6 points per game along with a stunning 311 passing yards per game. With moving the ball through the air as first choice, New Orleans running game was still ranked surprisingly high in a few categories, despite the low number of rushing attempts per game. So why did this team with all of its firepower only win 8 games? Simple: defense.

saints-si-coverThe Saints could never seem to shut down their opponents, allowing teams to move the chains on many key plays of the game. The “bend don’t break” strategy often broke in the redzone, as the Saints ranked near the bottom in many categories on defense.

While this team has lots of potential on defense, the lack of a stand out leader needs to be addressed. With no movement in free agency, the Saints will try to fill in the missing pieces in the draft. Although the safety position stands out as an immediate need, the lack of talent in that category is obvious, and New Orleans will have to select carefully in the later rounds. However, the chance at pick 14 to draft an instant starter at cornerback is very do-able. The Saints allowed 50+ passing plays over 20 yards in 2008, so anything will be an improvement. Gridironmalcolm_jenkins_ Experts thinks New Orleans is in a great position at 14 to draft Malcolm Jenkins from Ohio State. Jenkins would be an excellent compliment to last year’s rookie Tracy Porter, as he is a great tackler with good hand strength for press coverage and matches up well with big receivers. Some say Malcolm Jenkins would be best suited for the safety spot as his speed is a bit of an issue, but for New Orleans to need a player at both areas, the luxury of moving him to where he fits best would be perfect. Other options are for New Orleans to trade down, maybe adding an extra 2nd rounder to hog the board with secondary picks. If the New Orleans Saints draft an offensive player in the first two rounds, we will be very surprised.

Through The Eyes Of A Bronco Fan

img1721Gridiron Experts has had great feedback from our Writers Wanted page. Many die hard fans are looking forward to contributing articles for the upcoming season, none better than David East, writer for Broncotalk.net, a hardcore fan site for the Denver Broncos. Seeing how this Cutler/McDaniel’s nightmare is the talk of the off-season, Gridiron Experts figured who better to get an opinion from than a guy who not only follows the Broncos but also writes about them.

Through The Eyes Of A Bronco Fan

Question 1: Do Bronco fans really believe the rift between McDaniel’s and Cutler can be mended? Or is it now a matter of trying to figure out who to get in to replace him?
- The “McJayGate” strife going on in Denver done nothing short but confuse the minds of bronco fans. From what I’ve seen and been told the main consensus is starting to form around the battle coming to a peaceful end. The recent NFLN interview with Josh McDaniels has brought a lot of hope and clarity. Before the interview there was a lot of blame to be passed around but bronco fans were in two different camps, either defending McDaniels or Cutler. Now it’s clear the ball is in Cutler’s court, he has to begin Jay Cutlerworking with McDaniels, who was adamant in the interview about Cutler being “our quarterback.”

If Cutler really wants nothing to do with Denver anymore and continues to pout with the intention of a massive payday there seems to be only one popular option. The Jets, Browns, and Broncos will collaborate to land Cutler in New York, Brady Quinn and draft picks in Denver, and draft picks in Cleveland. The Jets have already expressed interest and Eric Mangini has expressed no interest in Quinn.

Question 2:
With Rumors of Tony Scheffler also on the way out, and with the Broncos signing more players than any other team in free agency, is this team quietly being re-rebuilt and in for a long season?

- Honestly, I will be surprised if Tony Scheffler is a Bronco come this fall. Scheffler really has no defined role in the spread offense. If history means anything the offense will draw strong comparisons to New England’s. Brandon Marshall will play the Randy Moss role, Eddie Royal will play the Wes Welker slot spot, and Jabar Gaffney will be Jabar Gaffney. The run game isn’t much different either.
