Early Winners and Losers in Free Agencyalbert-haynesworth-t2
While there are still many big names available in free agency, it’s easy to see which teams have a head start to the 2009 season in upgrading their rosters. Here’s our quick take on the transactions of the last 48 hours:

Winners

Daniel Snyder loves to throw his money around, and after a couple years of wasting a bunch of it, he’s finally figured it out. Instead of overpaying hype players like Randle El or Brandon Lloyd who’ll just end up getting cut in a few years, the Skins have found a cornerstone for their team. Albert Haynesworth is the real deal, and Skins fans should be very excited for the upcoming season. In recent seasons, Gridiron Experts would pick games based on whether Haynesworth was in the line-up or not, he has that much of a defensive presence. The best part about adding a player of this magnitude is that everyone around him gets better; Haynesworth demands double coverage on every down, allowing the linebackers and defensive ends more opportunities. Re-signing DeAngelo Hall was another smart move; he was a bust in Oakland but played great last year. The Skins also signed D. Dockery, a solid offensive linemen who will be forgotten about in the Haynesworth media frenzy.

This team is so smooth when it comes to wheeling and dealing this time of year. Whether it’s trading for Randy Moss for a bag of footballs, or tagging a backup quarterback then dishing him for picks, the Patriots rarely make bad decisions. Signing Fred Taylor could be the biggest steal of the week. Taylor is a workhorse that could have a big fantasy year in ‘09; his running style fits the Patriots perfectly. There’s almost a hint of déjà vu with Taylor going to New England, as this reminds me of the Patriots signing Corey Dillon and reigniting his career.

Losers

copy-of-img330Philadelphia
The Eagles improved their offensive line with the addition of Stacy Andrews on Friday, but had a few of their key players poached while they weren’t looking. Losing long time Safety Brian Dawkins is a heart breaker for fans, it also adds another hole to be filled. Correll Buckhalter and Sean Considine were solid backup players that were signed away, and trading away Lito Sheppard for next to nothing seems like a waste. The Eagles still have McNabb looking k-winslow-a over their shoulders and begging for more weapons, but they seem reluctant to go after “Housh-yo-mama”.

img90Cleveland
Why? Why would they trade away Kellen Winslow Jr. for draft picks? Browns fans are tired of waiting, and with their cap room the Browns could have made a few moves to improve their team. Instead there are rumors of Brady Quinn not being the guy next season, and even if he is, they just sent a reliable weapon packing.

On the Fence:

New York Jets- Great you got LB Bart Scott & Lito Sheppard but who’s your QB?

Denver Broncos-Quantity over quality, but they’re having a good weekend

Arizona Cardinals- You’re slowly getting picked apart…better re-sign Warner soon, he’s in demand

Jeff SaturdayThe Colts caved quickly, giving their veteran center Jeff Saturday a new three year deal hours before free agency begins. After releasing Marvin Harrison the Colts must have felt pressured to keep Peyton Mannings happy, as I’m sure fans would be up in arms to see both go to new teams. While there’s no doubt that the Indianapolis Colts will look different without Harrison and Dungy next season, a small youth movement could be a good thing for the team.

Every team is cutting the fat in anticipation of the beginning of free agency. This weekend should be one of the most interesting off-seasons in many years. Leading up to the start of free agency many were buzzing about players such as Albert Haynesworth, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, and Kurt Warner, but more players are being added to the list with teams trying to balance their check book with the salary cap. Some quality players are getting the pink slip; of course the first that comes to mind is  Marvin Harrison but here are a few you might have forgotten about or that are about to get the boot:

Fred Taylor, Patriots to meet | Boston Herald

Marvin Harrison Released!

Harrison Marvin Harrison Released!
The possible release of the second all-time wide receiver Marvin Harrison sounded like just a rumor a few weeks ago, but turned out to actually happen. The Indianapolis Colts asked Harrison to take a pay cut; when he refused and asked to be released, the Colts made his wish come true. Respect is something that will be overlooked here by the Colts organization. Most teams would drag Harrison through the mud in a tough love over money or compensation, but with free agency only days away the chance to unload about $6 million on next season’s salary cap is too good to be true.

If Eagles fans could stop bashing McNabb on message boards about his contract extension long enough to connect the dots, they might get excited over this news. Harrison, who lives in Philly and still wishes to play despite his age, could be reunited with his former Syracuse teammate QB Donovan McNabb, while getting to play in the city where he lives. McNabb has said his contract is more about free agent signings or the lack thereof after more than one request for play makers, and will wait to see what happens before making demands that I’m sure the Eagles organization will roll their eyes at, despite his great season.

rouletteEnough To Go Pro? Or Should’ve Stayed In School?

Declaring early for the NFL Draft is a huge gamble. Many see this choice as a no-brainer with the type of money being dished out for first round picks in the NFL, but believe it or not, there are risks involved with both options. On one hand, a player who doesn’t declare early could get hurt in their senior year, and ultimately cost  themselves millions of dollars. However, the horror stories of being dubbed a player who is just seeking money or who is too immature to stay in school could cost much more. Players like WR Mike Williams of USC or RB Maurice Clarett of Ohio State (who’s now in jail) are great examples of guys that forced their way into the NFL, only to find out they weren’t ready. Most of the time prospects that declare have a quiet to average freshman season, followed by great sophomore and junior seasons. Maybe things are changing, or maybe 3 teams are about to bite down on a steak that’s still frozen in the middle. Ross Tucker of Si.com wrote an article saying he feels prospects should just go for it and not look back.

Gridiron Experts looks at 3 top recruits that have declared for the draft with limited resumes, but seem like they have the skills for the next level.

Knowshon Moreno is ranked high on many boards. He is being labeled as one of the most physical running back prospects in quite some knowshon morenotime. Moreno’s stats show that he can handle a heavy work load. At first glance, no stats in his freshman year could trouble NFL scouts, but Moreno red-shirted his freshman year. This is almost as good as having clean up carries in games that were blow outs, as it shows maturity. Most kids can’t wait to get on the field and are hard to convince they should “red-shirt” a year, but it really does benefit them in the long haul.

Moreno is best running between the tackles, he has great cutting ability and he breaks arm tackles with ease. Coaches won’t let this physical RB get by them on the big board. Knowshon (cool name) rarely “dances” with the ball; he is a no nonsense player that one could call a perfect Denver Bronco style running back (that is before the Broncos overhauled their coaching staff).

Gridiron Experts thinks Knowshon Moreno could be a monster if used in the right offense next year. We are very curious to see his numbers this weekend at the combine, as some say he has “game speed” and is much faster than the ready-go 40 times.

RB LeSean McCoy- Pittsburgh Panthers (played 2 seasons)

We started this article gearing towards identifying players that came out too early. LeSean McCoy was the guy we were going to say needed to stay in school, as he is leaving the Pittsburgh Panthers and forgoing his final 2 years of eligibility, but we just can’t do it. LeSean McCoy has blinding speed and seems destined for the NFL. Everything on paper says he should stick around, but this kid has crazy skills and is first round bound…see for yourself:

Bye Bye Bly

The Denver Broncos released 10-year veteran Cornerback Dre’ Bly on Tuesday, along with 5 other cap casualty players. Dre’ Bly came to the Denver Broncos through a trade with the Detroit Lions 2 years ago. The Lions traded Bly and their ‘07 sixth-round draft pick to the Broncos for running back Tatum Bell, offensive tackle George Foster, and Denvers ‘07 fifth-round draft pick. It’s safe to say there were no big winners in this trade, as both teams were just unloading their garbage.

Other Broncos that got the boot include: Defensive end John Engelberger, Defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, linebackers Niko Koutouvides and Jamie Winborn, safety Marquand Manuel,  and tight end Nate Jackson.
